Blizzard Thinks StarCraft On Wii U ‘Might Work’

StarCraft II lead designer Dustin Browder thinks that StarCraft could work well on Wii U. Browder admitted that he didn’t know too much about the system, but he thought that If he were able to control a cursor on the television with his hand on the touchscreen, then it might be able to work. Would you like StarCraft II to appear on Wii U?

“The problem I have with the iPhone interface is the big meaty sausages called my fingers that are always in the way,” Browder told me, explaining that he thinks devices like the iPhone and iPad work well for games that allow you to casually lift up and put down your fingers, like tower defense.

“If I can control a cursor on the television with my hand on the touchscreen, that might be able to work.”

“If I can control a cursor on the television with my hand on the touchscreen, that might be able to work,” he said. “[But] because of the hotkey scenario, it’s not like players actually play StarCraft with the mouse only—they play with the mouse and keyboard… We obviously allow new users to play mouse-only and that’s really fun, but when you get serious about the game you do move into the mouse and keyboard space.”

    1. No, it’a a whole new system that you can use your Wiimotes with. But it’s probably about 2-x more powerful than Wii, and the graphics are much nicer. It also has several other features.

        1. actually its about as powerful as the ps3 fuck tard, and when ps4 and the new xbox comes out it will shit on it

      1. You all are idiots! hes obviously trolled you all with the common idea on how press has said the Wii U will confuse the casual crowd.

Yes Mr.Troll the wiiu is a add on.

    2. it’s a gadget from the future the whole thing about the Wii U is new but you can still use your old Wii mote because Wii U is supported up too 5 player it depends on what game you are playing the main controller of the Wii U is the Wii U gamepad

      1. Dude, you are a troll. MS copied Nintendo with the SmartGlasses. You should try harder with your pro trolling because you actually made me laugh with your comment.

      2. Praise MS for their revolutionary tablet and Sony for their trend-making motion controls…. oh wait….

    1. lol judging by the x’s, you’re a straightedger, so your arguement is invalid right off the bat lol

        1. well, straighedgers are kids who claim to be “drug free” and “peace loving” yet they tend to be giant assholes that pick fights with people and binge drink.

  1. HUZZAH!!! (i don’t even play blizzard games but its nice that WiiU is getting games like these for its library)

  2. Releasing popular games such as this might hopefully break this flood of fps games for consoles, first time strategy games can be played with ease on a home console, plus hopefully more devs will make them seeing as consoles have more mass appeal then pc gaming.

  3. Even just mentioning this proves that Blizzard is atleast interested with the Wii U.
They could also finish and remake some stuff with Starcraft Ghost using the Wii U-Pad…

If they make a game for Wii U it could raise the popularity of Nintendo more in USA atleast…

  4. I think it could work very well. The Upad is well suited to MMO’s like this and WoW. Please bring them. Starcraft has a large dedicated fanbase, it would be great if they could join ours. Leave luck to heaven.

    1. I would be happy with a ported one, but regardless they will have to make use of the touchscreen. Using it to control the cursor on t.v. would be nice, but I am really hoping for a bunch of hotkeys on the touchscreen as well.

  5. If Blizzard would make a StarCraft sequel for the Wii U, that would be an epic win. They had the first one on the Nintendo 64 and I’m sure the anticipation for an SC sequel will be the most of worthiness.

  6. my response to the hotkey problem, that’s why there are buttons :) minecraft worked just fine on a 360 controller, so this’ll will be fine on the wiiu pad.

  7. I think the Wiimote would work better for qn RTS. And no, I don’t want to see a single one of you repy “but teh Wiimote is gimmicky!” anyone whos played Pikmin with the Wii controls can tell you other wise. Besides, the Wiimotes pointer basically mimics a PC mouse.

    1. The WiiMote would work with RTS games, but I think the touchscreen would work better for RTS and other games as well.

Think of it this way. When Kid Icarus: Uprising was made, that was the first time I believe a touch screen wasn’t used as a gimmick but a true input method. Now imagine Uprising on the Wii U. Wouldn’t it be much better to use a touch screen rather than a WiiMote?

This is just my opinion, but if I ever had the choice to move a cursor with a touch screen or a WiiMote, I would go with the touch screen. It just feels better and more accurate.

  8. Blizzard, I’ve played StarCraft throughout my entire childhood and during computer club now. I would love to see StarCraft or StarCraft 2 on Wii U.

  9. What. The . Fudge… .Just make it compatible with a keyboard and mouse… OR a keyboard and gamepad… OR mouse and Gamepad…. I’m sure 5 billion people in the world can find a usb keyboard and mouse somewhere around the house…. how hard is this again?

  10. Actually, if we look back at Pikmin 3’s demo we can see that you can use both the Wii remote, Wii U Gamepad and the TV all at the same time. So say that you wanted to use a hotkey then you can simple press a button on your Gamepad’s touch screen and use the Wii remote as the cursor.

So really you have your Gamepad on your table with all the hotkeys for the game, using the Wii remote as the cursor on the screen to command tropes and what not, this is simple because if Pikmin 3 can do it I don’t see why Starcraft can’t do it as well

  11. Hold L to use the mouse and let go to use the keyboard easy right? Or how about stylus is mouse and fingers are keys.. Its actually better cause instead of memorizing letters you can have pictures or actual word commands or you can customize it how you want thats more user friendly’ thats what I like about the Wii U gamepad its so versatile.

  12. i play SC2 on my PC, but this could be a potential system seller for the wiiU, nintendo better talk to blizzard and get this right on, SC2 its hardly a demanding game (unless its 4v4 and everyone on the center of the map lol)

  13. “Come on, it’s Nintendo… it does everything!”
