Miyamoto Says Wii U “Might Not Be As Powerful” As The Next Xbox And PlayStation

Shigeru Miyamoto has conceded that Wii U probably won’t be as powerful as the next consoles from Microsoft and Sony, which are expected to launch late next year. Miyamoto added that it’s not all about sheer power, but how to balance what you’re offering in terms of power with cost.

“If the conversation is only really about whether the power is going to match up to another generation of hardware from, say, Sony or Microsoft, I can’t answer that question yet. [Wii U] might not be as powerful as those systems when they eventually do come around. But I think that the more important question is… It’s not just about power alone, but how to balance what you’re offering in terms of power with cost.”

    1. whats with news from Nintendo executives ,, are they on an interview on a show or a gaming site?? seems like a marketing strategy ,,

        1. you want portable system from Nintendo? Here is a 3DS, better experience for portable gaming.

          1. I am in between a vita or 3ds, and honestly 3ds has 7 games I would love to play, right now the vita has 1 or 2.. But I just wish the 3ds had a better screen and dual sticks, the wii u gamepad has that! If it was a portable as well as a console think about how many people would buy

    1. The only difference will be tech hype. Like the ps3s flops lol. Integrated tech works best when it’s power is designed for its purpose. You could always hook a lambo’s engine up to a Xbox and call it more powerful.

Today’s chips do multiple thing in one cycle which means the flops don’t always matter unless you are doing simple tasks.

This is why there is so much frustration about the ps3. It does not have the right type of power for gaming. Which is why the gpu is way more important.

Power means you can duplicate your competition without effort. This is not the case with the ps3.

Yes Sony has omg lOok at the art games because that is pretty much what they hire visual artists. They have no real game designers over there. Art design is a matter of preference.

Which is why people bought gears and praised uncharted then got a wii because it had less pc like games.

If the other systems are more powerful they risk collapsing the industry. First gamers won’t be able to afford the system then devs will go broke trying to tap that power.

      1. Uhm… no one’s saying the Wii U doesn’t have shooters, or even inferring it. Just talking about priorities. The direction Nintendo is going in focuses on a more broad, gaming-focused experience that may sacrifice a bit of graphics for cost and gameplay. I enjoy FPS games, on Wii and other consoles. But the other consoles seem to be pretty heavily focused on drilling those games out, again and again. While others are looking forward to more novel games.

I’ll enjoy the fps and other similar games, and even the games on the other consoles that aren’t fps’s. Don’t know where you’re getting that folks really think that fps is exclusive to other consoles. Miyamoto is talking about focus. But maybe that’s hard to understand. Have a teacher look the sentences over for you.

        1. Couldn’t of said it better myself!! Sick to death with shooters. And no nintendo aren’t the only ones hu make fun games but they def create worthwhile experiences be it casual or not. Gaming should be about playing together not isolating yourself with a headset screaming at random gamers online when you get your arse handed to u.

Gamers have become so snobbish when it comes to casuals and core games. Don’t like? Don’t buy casual games sit down put ur headset on or watever and shut the fuck up

        1. For now. You can be sure more will come. Heck, there were loads of shooters on the Wii. Now that the Wii U can handle more of them, expect a lot more as well.

      2. Really because the shooters on the other console are dumbed down.

Pretty much nuthing beats the game play in the order fps. Quake 3,enemy territory, valves fps, and the good ol mouse and key board setup is still better than pretty much all console shooters.

No aim assist no regen health no lame so called realism just pure excitement and terror cuased by the game play.

The problem is pure realism sucks in fps just ask the crytek guys they are going f2p ouch! Maybe Sony should do this.

  1. The 360 is noticeably weaker than the PS3 because it’s older, and it’s still doing great. Hopefully Sony and Microsoft don’t go too crazy so that such a thing is possible for the Wii U.

            1. Wha..? Do you know the difference between XDR and GDDR? The ps3 outpaces the 360 in almost everything, only to come SLIGHTLY behind on its GPU because of the 360’s 10 MB of eDRAM, which gets made up from the 7 cores running a total of almost 240 GFLOPS. The 360 might have slightly better colors, but the ps3 outresolutes, outprocesses, and overall outperforms the 360. The ps3 is a technological powerhouse, and even if it was hard to program for in the beginning, I have a feeling the cell processor is going to make a return on the ps4 with different architecture. Making my living room be inhabited yet again by both a Sony and Nintendo console. Saying the 360 is better than a ps3 technologically is ignorant. Do your research.

          1. You could never see a game like god of war 3 or uncharted 3 on the 360. The 360 couldnt do it.

        1. the ps3 and the 360 are on par, the only real difference is the stupid cell processor that sony has and the blueray reader. seriously when you play games side by side with a 360 and a ps3 there is no difference besides that the 360 has a better saturation with the colors but it’s not even anything major.

          1. Sony was dumb enough to put their own processor in it… Thats why developers have a hard time making games for it.

            1. yeah, it was a very dumb move on sonys part. it’s very inconvenient and restrictive and it isnt even as powerful as a normal processor.

                1. that still makes it a really dumb move. it should focused on first and foremost gaming. seriously they really messed up this generation. i was big into sony until the ps3. that’s when they started being total dickbags and then started making everything overpriced.

  2. That’s something everybody knew…Even in the unlikely scenario that their new consoles initially had lower specs than the Wii U-and I can’t stress enough how unlikely that would be-they would have improved them after finding about the Wii U to make sure they had better specs. Nintendo doesn’t think as much of high specs as the other two companies, so the Wii U’s current specs are probably just because it’s become cheap enough recently for them to do it without needing to raise the price too much…

  3. well nobody knows the next Xbox and PS4 so its possible that it may be powerful than wii u.

  4. it’s kinda logical that if you release first you’re not going to have the same shit as the console that is released 2nd or 3rd since they have more time for new hardware to be released. I’m not surprised. this fact is why I wager we might not see the next xbox or ps4 for a while as they will fall into a “no you go first I insist”

    1. If so, by the time both have announced theirs, Nintendo may already be making, or even about to announce their next one after Wii U, meaning that Nintendo could soon be 1 generation ahead.

      1. quite possible. also think about sequel games. nintendo didn’t do many for wii so its been a while eg pikmin 3. compared to cod 7 or whatever we’re up to, about number 4 at least on ps3, and halo 4. those franchises aren’t going to sell at 4 a generation forever.

plus, people can wish badluck upon nintendo as much as they want, they have the ace of top spec rpg pokemon. – I want to use the wii u gamepad as my pokeballs on belt. they can be horrible and make us actually have to walk for the first few routes too.

  5. so Myamoto is basically telling us the Wii U will balance between Ribs and Tits
    Nice, Day 1 buy :)

        1. Like in a female for example.
Nintendo doesn’t go for the girl with —>
          * big tits no ass
          *big ass no tits
*beautiful face but no ass and no tits

(Nintendo goes for the pretty face, nice ass and handful tits girl) that’s the best one all around.

  6. yeah we all knew that. the question now is that are they going to be so much more powerful that developers are going to have to dumb down multiplatform games for wiiu. from what I’ve been hearing that’s a big no. so don’t expect the wiiu to be as underpowered as wii was.

  7. It’s not just about power alone, but how to balance what you’re offering in terms of power with cost.” Well said…

    1. Maybe in comparison to the other two next-gen consoles. But if you’re playing for power, get a gaming PC.

    2. of course it will, whom are expecting Wii U to be in the same level or more powerful against two consoles that yet were announced?

  8. He’s right, if all you care about is power don’t even bother with consoles.. become a PC gamer geek.

  9. the issue right now is not about power, its about gameplay. wii u offers a new system with a huge idea behind it, the new controller. playing AC3 for example and using the wii u pad for shortcuts, maps etc… is going to be really cool and a more impressive exp. now with a traditional controller thing are repetitive and boring as previous generations. i dont want to be in a future where thing like “well here at E3 2035 we are going to introduce you to the PS6!! and the most amazing part is that the controller has the sameee design as PS1!!!! O_o but you cant use previous models” -_-
    sorry for the english

    leave luck to heaven

      1. It’s a Nintendo phrase. Anyone can use it. Besides, it’s not like copying a “sig” from a real forum.

      2. What? It’s not even an original phrase, or copyrighted. No offense to those who use it.

  10. People tend to devalue the fact that the Wii U will be more powerful than the 360 and the PS3, not realizing the logic also applies to the 720 and the PS4. Hell, everything after this point will be more powerful than the 360 and the PS3. To what degree, who knows. All we know is that, if you want the 720 and the PS4 to truly be abyssally powerful, then you need to stack them next to the Wii U’s power, not the 360 or the PS3.

  11. I get worried by statements like this, although he has a good point. The Wii U won’t be awful by any means, will be better than the consoles we have atm so that’s good. They will have more online services which is good and ofc HD :P. The other consoles can’t be too powerful otherwise that will make it much more expensive. But i wonder because graphics wise, things are already very good. The Wii U’s graphics are stunning, how much more can you improve on that?

That said however, who knows what the other consoles might bring. They could be on par or slightly better. In all seriousness if the Wii U is going to attract hardcore gamer’s then it will need to be able to compete. People who want to play third party games, which is most gamers will want to play them on the console that makes them look better. Its sad but that’s a fact, would suck to have another gamecube scenario. But like i said, who knows what the other consoles will be like.

    1. Quite frankly, I don’t care if the “hardcore” buy the console or not. People complain about third party games. Instead of playing games like Godfather and Scarface on XBox 360 or PS3(which I do at least played them when I borrowed it from friends), I decided to play it on the Wii instead. I had more fun playing it on the Wii. The graphics weren’t better but the game was so much more engaging. It actually was more challenging due to the motion controls. In short, I don’t care what the “hardcore” want. I play games that are on a system. If it’s not there, I am not concerned with it. Same goes for my PS3 and XBox 360. If the game is not there, I’m not concerned with it…

  12. He’s not leaving out the possibility. It’s hypothetical. Anyway, gamers may get burned out if every game is a super high-def blood-bath, and every game has similar quick-kills, cover-kills, ledge-kills, stealth-kills, headshots, destruction…………….

  13. I appreciate Nintendo’s realistic approach to this. It’s not about power, it’s about the games. And from what I’m seeing so far, the Wii U has everything I need. I’ll get one as soon as possible. Leave luck to heaven.

      1. Because when you focus on graphics more than gameplay, you end up losing the focus. Btw, Nintendo games do have power. It might not be the most powerful, but you don’t have to be the prettiest to be the best.

People care about graphics way too much. Graphics are important, but the gameplay will always be more important. Besides there’s a price to pay for having all that power. Literally.

        1. It’s kinda like buying a Bugatti Veyron. You can go 200mph but there’s no road in the USA that’s safe to pull that off in and gas mileage will suck trying to drive it in the city (besides even if you did drive it that fast you’ll only be able to drive it or about 15 min before the tanks empty) hahaha! So in other words power doesn’t make a car a great buy.

      1. It definitely will. I think instead of harping on about what the Wii U doesn’t have, I prefer to focus on what it does have. And from what I’ve seen I love what it has and I don’t even know the half of it yet.

    1. You do know kevin pereira does not like Nintendo right? of course you would know if you seen G4 the crap channel like I did until it went downhill.

      1. Yeah, I know. But I like him. He was genuinely funny, unlike Morgan Webb or Blair Herter who try way too hard.

I remember the first time I saw G4. It had shows like Flter, Cinematech and Arena. I was like ” A channel soley dedicated to gaming? Instantly my favourite!” But it was ll downhill from there. AOTS is the only show worth watching anymore and that was beause of Kevin.

        1. It died in 2005 when Neal Tiles decided to turn it into a “Male Lifestyle” channel.

I still miss Portal. Dave was actually in my Marvel Comics fan club thread on the old G4 forums. He was our Adam Warlock.

  14. wise words. it’s only natural for nintendo to not want to have their own “FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE U.S. DOLLARS” console

    1. The only thing we’ll be seeing a “FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE U.S. DOLLARS” console is Xbox 720… while the PS4 will be $100 higher than Microsoft’s future console.

      1. If rumors are to be believed, that’s the cost of the console plus the subscription fee you need to even use it.

    1. Yes, such a moddest man. Something you rarely see from top Exucutives. Reggie seems to lack it a bit, but not horribly.

  15. Who cares!?! As long as it’s HD I am all good. Besides… Retro will figure something out.

    1. Exactly. Retro knows how to push Nintendo hardware to it’s absolute limits. They’ll make Wii U games that look amazing and play even better. Hopefully star fox is one of them.

  16. In my mind it’s what games support the system, and not cost. I would pay more for a system that had a good set of launch titles. Not all about its power. Powerful processing helps, but I stopped factoring in graphics a long time ago.

  17. Obviously. Systems that are released earlier than their competitors tend to be less powerful such as the PS, PS2, and the 360. It doesn’t mean much unless the difference in power is so great or easier to deal with that they prefer a more powerful system.

  18. What!!! Are you serious!!! How could the WiiU be less power than the consoles releasing 1-2 years later who will mostly go for hardware rather than new controls or stuff!?! THIS CAME COMPLETELY OUT OF NOWHERE!!!!
Yeah, I don’t get the point of this article at all.

  19. Yeah but go play RE4,MK double dash, or the GC starfox they look like 360 games. If the developers push there games it wouldn’t matter. On Wii they didn’t give a shit and put out garbage hopefully that doesn’t happen with U.

  20. Do Sony and Microsoft make video-game consoles? I never knew that.

But why? When Nintendo is all you need.

  21. i just want this gen to be like the gamecube xbox and ps2 gen thats all this wii gen sucked in terms are nintendo getting third party games but i think it will be fine graphics wont inprove that much unless sony wants to use another cell cpu that no one really gave 2 shits about..come to think of it no one even fuckin used there cell cpu because every game on ps3 was a port..well i guess only the exclusive game really used the cell

  22. Just so long as we’re not talking about a Wii to PS3/360 sized gap, preferably a PS2 to GCN/Xbox sized gap, it’s fine.

      1. Alot of developers are saying the WiiU is only about 20% less powerful than the nextbox. Thats a figure i can believe, and it seems comparable to how the ps3 is now to the 360

    1. I’m loving where Miyamoto is coming from here.
      It shows he cares.
I’m still going to get some of the great PS3 games coming out soon, but I promise you that unless something major happens, there’s no way I’m missing out on the Wii U.^_^

      1. Ditto. Games lime Dead Space 3 and The Last of Us are gona jeep me hooked to my ps3 but soon as WiiU comes, its gona be my main console, which im very happy about

  23. Just tell us which CPU and GPU you’re using already. That and how much ram you guys slapped into it.

If its at least a triple core CPU (hopefully a little better than the one in the Xbox 360) and the AMD 4800-6700 series card and at least a gig+ of RAM, its already leaps and bounds better than current gen consoles on top of the innovative controller.

  24. One thing that can’t be disputed:
WiiU is definitely more powerful than what i got here at home! Just think of games that effortlessly look better than Baten Kaitos(GCN) or MP3Corruption(Wii)! And i won’t cry if we don’t get Unreal 4- if you buy Nintendo, you’re excited because you know what’s coming. Quality.

  25. But when is this controller for the wii coming out, i’m just glad i won’t have to buy a whole new console.

  26. Miyamoto, I know you can be nonchalant about hardware power… But when is Nintendo going to one-up Microsoft and Sony by leaving a huge gap between hardware power? Making a console with something (everything?) better than a PC would “WAZOW!” some people. I guess I’m just tired of waiting for the next big hardware jump from Nintendo. And tired of knowing that they can do it, but not knowing why they won’t, because a profit would be made. Seven more years to go to see if they decide to beat a PC. Sorry if I offend anyone somehow, BTW.

    Still, hugs and kisses, Nintendo.

    1. I understand your frustration, but you must understand that by releasing a console with the absolute latest tech would drastically hike the cost for the consumer and ultimately minimize Nintendos user-base. What you should be asking Nintendo for is a console that can be customized with upgrades to further improve the consoles ability i.e. like we will have with the WiiU’s External USB Storage. This way consumers can spend specific to their own demands… Or just get a PC. Another option is to release multiple SKUs but that is too risky during the start of a consoles life-cycle.

With global consumer spending considerably greater for Wii Sports Resort then for Xenoblade, do you really think that those initial buyers are looking for high-end gaming experiences. The Wii Sports Resort audience would have little interest in playing if the Wii was twice the price due to it having tech above and beyond what this audience require, as all they would be after is the fun that Wii Sports Resort offers as it stands today, with it’s overall appealing value.

I couldn’t imagine Nintendo having 40% of the console market-share with the Wii if it was released with specs more on par with other consoles on the market.

Not hating on WSR, just using it as an example.

  27. Nintendo has likely been working on the Wii U longer than Sony and Microsoft have been working on their next consoles. So yes, Wii U will lack in power compared to the other two. But does that really mean anything? It can compete with the PS3 and XBOX360 a bit more easily. I honestly don’t think that the next consoles from the other two will be terribly revolutionary anyways. Perhaps they’ll implement second screens as well, and maybe implement the Kinect and Move a bit better. But honestly, I can’t see where those systems could be going right now. How much more power can you add to a system?

I think the Wii U will fare fine, regardless. It’s sounding like it’s going to have a lot of great first party titles, and hopefully even more third party titles later. As long as it gets the support it needs and doesn’t lack on content for months on end like the 3DS (and even the Vita), then I think more people will adopt the idea of it, and will take it on.

  28. Awesome :D its nice to gear ACTUALLY developers and executives talk about the wiiU’s capabilites. To be honest, next gen isnt going to be that much of a leap anyway, because it just becomes too expensive, the 3 companies have to come up with a balance of a realistic price and best visuals, which is difficult. Nintendo have an advantage in the fact they dont stuff random shite into their console. I mean, the WiiU does not need a dvd player. Its saved money.

I am interested how normal wii games will look on the wiiu though….would they technically be HD. Would save me having to buy HD re-releases that other conpanies are doing. Ust hope gamecubes title get online HD releases.
