Miyamoto Hopes Wii U GamePad Will Be The “Most Looked-At Screen In The House”

Nintendo has already mentioned that they want to be the centre of the living room with Wii U, but Miyamoto wants the Wii U GamePad to be the most looked-at screen in your living room, even more so than the television. Do you think Nintendo can achieve this lofty goal?

“With the Wii U, a system that we’re trying to make into the center of the living room, our ultimate goal is that this might be the most looked-at screen in the house, the screen on the GamePad itself, even more so than the television. That’s our goal.”

    1. You don’t have to say first if your the first comment… we have eyes. Just a thought you should think over. -_-

  1. Can this thing run any apps on its own? Or does all functionality need to be streamed from the WiiU (even minor things, like the internet). I think that will be the make or break – unless the range on it can go all over the house and isn’t tethered to the same room as the console.

    1. The console needs to be on, but think of it in the way that you wont need to turn the tv on, just pick up the pad and go.
As for its range, could go either way, alot of wireless controllers can be used from 2 floors above the room its in. So its possible, would be cool waking up, and thinking, i’ll check so and so website and get breakfast, then just using pad.

    1. I would assume so. I can imagine it working the same way as the Netflix, where you can choose where you want the display at any time.
I think Wii games…might be more tricky. Metroid Trilogy, would probably be fine, Mario Galaxy would be, if the touch screen could replaces the use of the infrared. But i can imagine them all working on the screen, but GC games, definitely

    2. its been confirmed that you will be able to transfer all of your wii saves and virtual console games over to the new system

        1. well the gamepad has a built in sensor bar, so im pretty sure they’ll make it so you can just stream it to the controller.

    1. Well the Wii has a BBC iPlayer, and a channel 4, which is like a free online on demand tv service, so most likely

  2. Its kin of a, not misleading, but less obvious title, at first inpression people will be like, “No, i have a HD tv? But consider this:
From an asymetrical gameplay stand point, that people will want to use is it for a different experience, yes.
The whole, your parents/girlfriend/housemate comes in, and wants the tv and you can move to the gamepad, yes.
The more simple use of stuff like Netflix/Youtube, or web browsing in particular, yes.
And from my personal stand point, playing VC games to me will just feel better on the smaller screen, the pixels wont be as noticable, its more similar to a handheld device just a gameboy, or a DS.
So he is absolutely right, but it wont be because of the “main” game experiences

  3. you want me to spend more time looking at the gamepad screen than the TV?

you’ve got my support on this one, Mr. Miyamoto! i’m going to be using that gamepad for Wii/VC/WiiWare something serious. and i don’t really watch TV

  4. i wish it was out now looks so cool, i wish i could be frozen till it comes out. but i would have to be careful i don’t won’t to fight atheist otters lol

        1. I wish i could freeze myself, i have a Wii and a PS3, i already went through my Wii back catalouge, and my PS3 just seems boring now.. Haha

  5. It will be if it can run apps on its own, like youtube and could run live television

  6. I work from home on my computer. It’ll be a cold day in Hell when I look at the Wii U controller more than my computer screen.

    1. He’s not talking about games, or at least not the main releases (meaning virtual console games will be most likely played on the pad)

      1. Uh, he better be talking about those too. It may not be in HD on the smaller screen, but that’s no reason not to put them there.

        1. I meant the majority. The screens always being used for gaming, in one way or another. I was just making it apparent how it’ll be used MORE than just gaming, subsequently why itll be used more than a tv

    1. +1
Bashing haters and trolls using a WiiU, when they say how bad it is and all this stuff you apparently cant do.
      Iiiironyyyyyy.

    1. Clearly you have no idea what he means when he says that. Look at my comment, you might understand it a bit better rather.

      1. He’s referring to the questionable appeal of the smaller screen, not its capability.

Clearly you also have no idea what he means.

        1. How could you possibly draw that from, “wishful thinking”?
He’s saying he doesnt think it’ll be used more than a tv, because hes looking at it from just a gaming perspective.

  7. My perspective is that time will tell, but I have a feeling it will be. I have a Nook and I use it more than my computer simply to browse and read. I’m using it right now as we speak, so much more convenient. Since I’m able to surf the net and read e-books on Wii U; yeah I think it’ll top it all ;)

  8. This is one of those moments where the power button on the Gamepad is really useful, because by turning on the console remotely, it will then turn on the Gamepad’s screen. You can then do whatever you want on the Gamepad without ever worrying about the TV screen. It will basically act like an iPad, but with all of its power and guts in a separate unit. It’s kind of like how a server works. Or, rather, it’s very similar to the remote computer access Lotus mentions in 999, where she talks about how a caveman will turn on a computer monitor, thinking that all of its power is within the monitor, when in reality, the monitor gets all its data from a processing unit very far away, and the processing unit is transmitting (or streaming, get it?) its data through wireless means. So anybody wanting a better idea of what the gamepad is like, you should replay that part in 999, cuz it’s fundamentally the same idea. Another analogy for you Mass Effect fans is EDI’s platform in ME3 versus her AI Core on the Normandy. She may walk and talk with her body, but her real mind always exists on the Normandy, so technically, even if her platform ceases to function, she can still exist aboard the Normandy. This is what we call long-distance manipulation, where a fundamental power source (the Wii U console) wirelessly controls other devices (the Wii U gamepad), similar to how a brain controls the arms and legs. It’s true when they say that the gamepad is just a controller — it’s not an independent device, nor is it intended to be as such.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind using a smaller screen to play some of my bigger games. I like the feeling of being “up close” with my games, and my bigass screen won’t do that for me. Plus, browsing the internet on the TV screen feels so awkward.

    1. Sweet Mass Effect reference haha but yeah, i described the whole, not having to turn on the tv to some guy earlier. Obviously, it all depends on the range of the controller…im curious to see how theyd go about doing that, because if its big enough you can walk around the houss but if its just not as much, it could cut off, thats what concerns me. But otherwise, i could have my wiiu downstairs, and just take the controller to bed, so when i wake up, its there. I also like sitting in bed watching youtube and stuff to help me sleep. Also some guy mentioned Ebooks too, which, would make a killing for Nintendo.

I agree with the older games playing on the smaller screen. Games like Super Metroid, i feel like its better on the pad, i aued fusion on GBA, and couldnt imagine playing 2D metroid on anything other than handheld, not to mention it’ll round out the pixels, seeing as theyre not getting upscaled to a 30 inch tv

      1. I honestly don’t know why I didn’t think of it sooner. I guess I was just so focused on the games and the two screens, instead of focusing on just the small screen.

The Wii U setup also reinforces the idea of a “home console,” since you can’t take the controller far from your console (ie, outside) and use it. Its very design makes it an inevitable console for the household. Very clever.

        1. I could totally see myself laying back on my bed and playin the gamepad like I would with my 3ds..

  9. You know what most people are looking at in their homes? Call of Duty. Not this shit Nintendo is churning out.

    1. You still playing Call of Duty? I gave up a long time ago. It’ll fall soon, that same rehash of gameplay. I thought EA sports was bad, but atleast they change gameplay mechanics every now and then.

  10. @gpad watcher and mario isnt? Well miyamoto we might as well trash our 60 inch tvs we bought. I heard gamers having trouble focusing on both screens at the same time

  11. @chrisTool yeah they deserve it after lying so fucking much and then slapping they naive brainless kids who got suckerd into buying a 3ds and lying their as to the bank with 3dsxl *typo not lying i meant Laughing*

    1. @ Luce Anus: I’m sorry Micro wasted all that time to give you a Dumbglass and Kinect. Also for how many times they suckered people with the red ring of death and cried their asses all the way to the bank. And also sorry if you had to spend $60 for Call of Dookie.

  12. what is smart glass? is it a thing so you can watch net fix on your tablet? well you can do that already. is it a thing to use while you play games on xbox? well maybe if you are an octopus because you’ll need at least four arms. lol, smart glass fail.

  13. i will use my Wii u like a bastard if it supports video though the internet EXCEPT YOUTUBE… i use my wii a lot for youtube
