Time Says Nintendo Should Ditch The Wii U GamePad

wii_u_gamepad_white

Time believes that Nintendo should ditch the Wii U GamePad due to the lack of upcoming games that fully utilise the unique controller. The publication says that despite Nintendo announcing Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2 and Super Smash Bros, none of these games require the GamePad to play. Time says of all the Nintendo games they sampled at E3, the touchscreen didn’t add anything meaningful to the experience. They recommend Nintendo ditch it as it could be the company’s best chance at turning its fortunes around. You can read the full opinion piece, right here.

“Right now, even Nintendo seems stumped by the controller. In the games I sampled at E3, the touchscreen didn’t add anything meaningful to the experience.”

“It makes me wonder whether Nintendo is setting the stage for a low-cost, GamePad-free version of the Wii U. Given that the GamePad isn’t essential to Nintendo’s upcoming games, and that it doesn’t have much support from other publishers, a low-cost alternative to the PS4 and Xbox One doesn’t seem outrageous. Ditching the GamePad would be embarrassing, but it could be Nintendo’s best chance at turning its fortunes around.”

    1. Agree with Time. Nintendo has no idea what the gamepad is for. They make this console called Wii U with a second screen on the controller yet at E3 they showed absolutley no game that uses the gamepad in a unique way. So far I haven’t seen any game that uses the gamepad in a way that couldn’t be done on any console. A game that shows “hey this is the Wii U and this game can’t be played anywhere else because of it’s unique way that you play it”. All they showed at E3 is the same old games we seen before. Zero innovation whatsoever.

      1. I agree. Two years ago at E3, Nintendo showed us only the GamePad. This made it seem as this was the next direction. I like the GamePad. But I want more out of it.

      2. I see, so you just wanted to be on the top! Next time say something like “You’re not first until penis in butt you!” or “Laid first not, BUTT last”. Not that hard is it! People who say first are meant to get all the attention, everyone will care and people fall in love with them and will do everything to have anal with them ^^

      3. Zombiu, Nintendoland, pikmin 3 and monster hunter 3 say hi.(and I think the wii u party game used it in some ways as well although I didnt pay much attention to that game)

Nintendo are doing what they did with the wii, they’re using the gamepad on some games but they’re not gonna force it down our throats in everything, if they can’t think of a use for it in a certain game then they won’t use it, personally I can’t wait to see how they implement it into mario party.

Although I do agree it could be used a bit more by them but it’s far from being useless and honestly just having the hud menu’s and clutter on the screen moved to the gamepad and off tv play is good enough for most games imo.

        1. ZombiU n Nintendoland really utilize the Gamepad full force. I already see Splinter Cell Blacklist is doing the same thing. The only problem not enough games support the Gamepad. But it’s a great feature when it’s being utilized.

          1. Yeah im hoping that when the third party support starts picking up again we’ll see more good gamepad functionality.

        2. Yeah except those games can easily be done on XBOX ONE and PS4 with just a couple small modifications and they’d not only still play well, they’d look infinitely better and have much more power to do other things with (more enemies, smarter AI, larger environments, more dynamic environments, etc.). None of those games absolutely NEED the GamePad.

And if they don’t make use of the GamePad in meaningful, innovative ways for the vast majority if games, why make people pay extra for it?

I agree with time. It’s high time to ditch the GamePad and just pack in the 360-wannabe controller.

        3. Sorry. When people first picked up a Wiimote to play Wii Sports they knew exactly what it was for right away. There was no question or confusion. Face it, Nintendo is blowing it with the GamePad as well with the system. I don’t think they have any real direction anymore. They are just tossing things against the wall to see if they stick at this point.

        4. dude are you kidding?. zombi u, nintendo land, pikmin 3 and every other wii u game out there is using the gamepad in the same way the second ds and 3ds screens have been used. there is very little to nothing the wii u game pad can do differently from the 3ds second screen. the gamepad is a nintendo idea that fell flat mostly because it does what the 3ds/ds handhelds already did and it tries to do what ipads and technology available everywhere else already do. and don’t come up with “but i like the gamepad” because guess what, many people don’t see the gamepad as something worth buying the console for thus the poor sales, and even nintendo can’t find an original or revolutionary way to make the gamepad something that is absolutely necessary. not even mario 3d world showed any amazing use of the gamepad.

          1. The gamepad is more necessary and feasible to come with the system than a kinect.

Also, the gamepad isn’t mandatory and costly like the kinect.

      4. I didn’t like the wiimote that much and therefore did not like having to use it for so many Wii games when I would’ve preferred the Classic Controller or GCN Controller. However, I’m not against it because I know it appeals to some people if not many people. It does in fact bring new things to the table, especially with motion+.

The gamepad though I like much more, and I am just as happy to see it as a small addition to a game as I would be to see the game revolve around it completely. I’m sure in the Wii U’s lifespan we will see plenty examples of both. Overall I see Nintendo embracing multiple control options, as often as possible, which is the best direction to go. I also really like how in Nintendo Land, you can play games like Zelda/Metroid in dramatically different ways. That is very cool and unique.

The gamepad is awesome enough just for internet browsing/not needing a TV though.

        1. I think the internet browser on Wii U is actually great! I prefer it to kindle fire or an ipad 2 for browsing the web. I think it beats them both easily in terms of accuracy of the touch-screen and i really like using the controller buttons for a lot of functions. if i don’t have to type a lot of stuff it is nearly as good as a computer for browsing the web.

Also, in a house like mine where there are lots of kids who use the tv, the off-screen playability of games is one of the greatest features of any system ever. I can sit in the living room, with the family, and play my games and not have to hear everyone whine about me hogging the tv.

          1. I totally agree with your comment! Was playing Super Metroid on the gamepad and got stuck on where I should go. Out of habit, I was gonna look it up on my laptop, when my brother suggested that I look it up on my gamepad! Stupid me forgot that I could pause the game, open the browser, and surf the web as I would on my laptop! Found my answer, closed the browser, and it brought me back to where I was in the game! Talk about awesome? The Wii U gamepad is essential for the total enjoyment of all games! Even if none of the games use the touch screen, off screen play is where it’s at!

            1. I can easily relate to both of these replies. The fact that you can put up Youtube videos to play music/entertain your friends while still browsing for the next thing or multitasking on the gamepad, well that fact is absolutely amazing. The Wii U gave me more than I expected, and all I really wanted was better games than the last gen. A lot of people say they were let down by the Wii’s overall library. I feel this way too, however, I own about 50 Wii games. So, Nintendo obviously got something right there. Maybe the fact that the Wii was obviously superior to it’s predecessors despite the few things it lacked. I dunno.

I experienced the same situation with Super Metroid, but instead got my problem solved on Miiverse just by linking a screenshot of my position and writing, not typing “What should I do?” in mere moments. My gamepad is my keyboard on MH3U, and it is also my mic. I go into the browser in the middle of fights or in the tavern for super quick Google searches. In other games I forget about what I was doing entirely and spend hours in between Miiverse/Browser, only to come back and go “whoah”.

              Absolutely Amazing.

      5. NO…..WarioWare,Nintendo Land,NSMBU just to name a few. AND to top it all of instead of doing split screen, you can just use the gamepad and the other person use the tv.AND you can play solely on the gamepad if you don’t like the wii remote controls AND you don’t even need a tv to play–all you need to do is hook it up to a power outlet and play on the gamepad. That doesn’t sound like they’re stumped does it? They aren’t gonna force you to use the gamepad just like how for instance smash didn’t use motion controls.

      6. Of all the stupid things the media says, this by far is the worst. The gamepad isnt only to fuck around with in game, its also for off tv play and menus, shortcuts, and no split screen necessary. Why in the hell would I want Nintendo to ditch this wonderful controller? Obviously they dont get it. Dumb asses.

        1. I agree with you TRUTH4thaHATERZ.
It makes it very easy to navigate around Miiverse and the internet. Then we have all the games, Nintendoland, ZombiU, Wii U Party and more.

Also, people are way too quick to judge, the system has only been out for half a year, and some games have been announced for the other half. It’s still about 5 years left until the new consoles so there’s much more to come. People need to relax.

          1. You Nintendrones love to judge the Vita and it hasn’t been out long, so why can’t people judge the Wii U? It’s shit, face it.

            1. The vita is longer then a year out dude, that’s why a lot of people judge the Vita. The Wiiu gamepad is the best controller i play with right now, you web on the internet, you can play only on the tv, you can play with 5 players, what do you want anymore?

                1. Keep in mind that everyone wasn’t judging it only a few months in. All Nintendo fans are not the same, etc.

      7. I absolutely agree. Just like the Wii’s motion control and 3D on the N3DS, the GamePad is a gimmick developers do not want or care about.

      8. Can you play ANY game and I mean any game without TV in the X Box one or in the PS4? NO? Then there you go, the Wii U can do something that ANY of the competitors can do, and that is thanks to the gamepad.

I think is you and TIME the ones that does NOT know what the gamepad is for. That you have a Tool for making a game does not mean you have to use it for every game you make, yo do not use a fucking welder to make a tree house.

Congratulation, your plan to make you note replying to the first comment work perfectly, now everybody know you are an ignorant with really low self esteem.

          1. Oh yeah, I totally forgot that the PS Vita is just a controller that come bundled with the PS4 for only 400 dollars, silly my, because if the PS Vita was a console on itself, well that would make your comment entirely pointless and kind of stupid because that would imply that Sony need two powerful and different console just to made what a single Nintendo console can do.

      9. I believe that there is a reason they have the gamepad and they just haven’t shown it yet. i think that the next Zelda (HD Zelda, or Zelda U What ever you want to call it) will more than prove the reason the gamepad exists.

      10. The thing is they can’t just ditch it, its not that easy, they would have to put out a complete new console out. I agree, I just want a normal Nintendo console now, the gc was great. I’m tired of gimmicks, and think it’ll be easier to develop their games, but I support the,, if it makes the, happy, it makes the game better and more enjoyable for us.

      11. well zombi U and nintendoland made some pretty good use out of it

still it puzzles me why nintendo hasn’t capitalized on the gamepad

      1. Uhh hallo! U tall m bruda! I was onusty getin tird of all dese ppl poshtin comints unrelaytad to Nin10doh. I wil supot u alwys becaus I luv u. <3

        1. OH DEAR FUCK THEY’RE MULTIPLYING SOMEONE GET THE SHOTGUN!
Seriously can’t we just ban this guy or something already?

        1. Uhh hello! i dont c wat i am doin wong 2 get mii ban???!! mother think u r bein ridicilous u sily goouse !! i jus lov this site and nintendo because i love them. thay r grate things!!

    2. this is clearly a bluff statement knowing it is nintendos ace of spades which they want to make seem invaluable, since they didnt do it themselves,i bet if microsoft chose to go that direction with the same concept it woulda had more praise nd sucha great gamble taken smh all gaming politics

    3. Sure, the gampead is a piece of shizzle. Let’s look at my games:

Pikmin 3 – I like tha map, it’s useful. But still i prefer to play with Wiimote+Nunchuk.

ZombiU – I didn’t like looking at the tablet to scan stuff. I would rather play with Pro Controller or Wiimote+Nunchuk, but i can do it in multiplayer. Sucks. I only liked sniping with the gamepad.

Super Mario Bros U – I like how i can play the game without a TV like a handheld, but the gamepad creates some stupid compatibility issues. It can be only used in 1player mode. YOU CAN’T USE IT FOR MULTIPLAYER! you need wiimotes and pro controllers.

Rayman Legends – Murphy levels are terrible, especially in singleplayer. I didn’t like it at all.

Wiisports – great, now i have to put the gamepad ON THE FLOOR when i want to play golf. thats so stupid. I don’t play golf because of that.

Super Mario 3D World – This is worst of them all, hear this.
I AM FORCED TO USE THE GAMEPAD FOR CERTAIN LEVELS! WHY!!? Because that level MIGHT require me to blow in the mic or press screen for something to happen. I fu*king hate it.

Also i can’t browse shop and internet without it… what a joke!

In the gamepad’s defense, it’s awesome in fighting games like Tekken and Injustice. You can put it on your lap and use it like a fightstick, very comfortable. Also you can see movesets on the screen. So it can be useful, but more than not it’s just annoying and stupid.

        1. Nintendo fans are by far the smartest they know a good game when they see one unlike a fag like u. So you can go keep sucking microdick and softy because a cheap whore like u would not understand that magazine is for soccer moms who don’t know shit about shit!

              1. Considering everyone greentexts, he doesn’t really look like a retard. It’s just too generic now.

                    1. You seem to think you’re pretty slick and clever. May I ask why you are a virgin and have never had a girlfriend?

    1. If that’s the only reason then the gamepad should just be an extra controller and the pro controller should be the main.

    1. Ignoring that both Sony and Microsoft also will have available two screens. But it’s only a stupid idea on Nintendo huh?

        1. Hehe that’s how the media and die hard fans work~ gotta pretend the other companies aren’t doing the same thing ;p

  1. I find it alarming how much sense that quote actually speaks. I love the GamePad, really really do love it, but after seeing what it’s being used for in upcoming titles… *gulp* not good. Would explain the NSMB U patch adding Pro controller support… Could we see a Nintendo Land bundle with the GamePad coming for those with the low-cost console?

    1. Don’t get me wrong, TIME aren’t credible for this, nor am I saying the GamePad should be dropped, I’m just saying that they are making a valid observation, that would also make sense from a business point of view. But it would hurt innovation too much, Nintendo won’t do that.

        1. Nuetron, don’t tell me you played Wonderful 101. You know you’re a graphics whore. That’s not youre type of game.

  2. Without the GamePad we wouldn’t be able to play games off the TV screen while others are watching something else on TV.

  3. To be honest… I feel the Game Pad such an awkward in my hands. I definitely don’t like it. Moreover, I haven’t been caught by the idea of sharing my attention between the TV and the Game Pad screen, which is ok for handhelds, but not for home consoles.

    1. It feels comfortable to me, but I agree on the whole tv and gamepad screen thing. They need to create a good system for it.

  4. Here we go. Dropping a quote from iMii of Nintendolife that fits this situation.

“Nintendo is also in a terrible position at E3, for a roughly similar reason: Everyone who loves Nintendo think they know what’s best for Nintendo, and they get frustratedvery easily. If Nintendo does something radically new and different and weird — motion gaming with the Wii, the tablet control of the Wii U — people complain that Nintendo is violating itslegacy of greatold-school gameplay. If Nintendo shrugs and says, fine, here’sa brand-newMario game or a brand-new Zelda sequel, people complain that Nintendo is resting on its laurels and violating its legacy of pushing the boundaries of gameplay.”

    1. To be honest, I can see the touchpad on the Dualshock 4 being a wasted feature after launch. I doubt it will be used much by third-party devs and after a while, Sony’s first party will not use it much; It will end up just being used for UI controls. ;/

That’s one part of the DS4 I find gimmicky. Back panel touchpad on the Vita is largely useless, I suspect this will be too.

With that said: There were games using the touch pad on the PS4. Just about all of the first party games that they have shown, plus some third party games make use of it.

  5. Arnold Swollenpecker

What is time? Other than an abstract set of parameters that we set our watches and biogical rhythms to?

  6. I’ll be honest, what they’re saying makes sense. Two screens are nice, but they only games that I can think of that use them nicely are games like Zelda and Fire Emblem, where the inventory and/or stats are on the second screen. Platformers, First and Third person shooters, and most indie games just don’t need both.

  7. no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no

    Keep the fucking pad.

I believe it’s a good thing, not for the games, but bloody keep the shity pad ok.

besides, I think Metroid will be awesome using it! :D

  8. Yeah I been waiting for months to see the GamePad used to it’s full potential. I like the GamePad for off tv mode. But it needs more excitement when playing. Maybe Zelda or some other major future IP will do it. So far only Raymand Legends is the best thing for the gamepad. I know it has NFC technology and mic but it has not been used yet.

  9. First of all, wouldn’t make any fiscal sense to drop the Wii U game pad now, the software coding, all the R&D, the inventory and not to mention all the current adopters with the Wii U game pad wouldn’t make any sense to drop it now. If they had the chance, they should have done it before launch.

Second, Wii U game pad purpose was to attract independent developers to migrate from Mobile smartphone/tablet games and port them to Wii U so Nintendo can adopt best of both worlds.

Third, Wii U game pad has become a matter of convenience, I like the idea playing all my games without turning on the TV.

Fourth, not all games have utilized the game pad, but some do, and it is very convenient to have your game menu options, maps or inventory on game pad screen and not clutter your TV screen.

Last but not least, no one should judge a console on the first year. Media seems to always fall into this mistake and eat their words when Nintendo’s console once again takes off on second year just like Wii and DS, 3DS…. It’s all about the games and we still don’t know what the future holds and how the game pad might be utilized in the future.

Remember, the best Wiimote games came out mid-end of the life cycle of the Wii console, so why in doubt now?

    1. Not to mention all the great things Nintendo has planned with it. I guess xbone should drop the smart glass, and ps4 the tiny touch pad lol. Does My Nintendo News ever report something positive? I mean 75% of the time its troll bait. Im thinking of moving to another site if this shit continues.

  10. Mario Kart 8 and SSBWU… 5-player local multiplayer, nuff said. Oh, and the Pikmin minimap, I bet LoZ:WWHD will have a forever open inventory. These may be small things, but they’re small things that are unique possibilities to the Wii U. These details enhance gameplay overall and are definitely relevant features.

    1. SSBWU goes up to 5 players? I didn’t know that. Anyway. what I like about the GamePad is off tv mode and drawing. Wait, there is a software for people to draw adding color. I also like the Wii Fit U with the GamePad telling you your weight. So maybe it’s just a matter of time. I think Pikmin 3 will be good.

  11. Disagree, it’s very useful. You can put maps on it, useful for games such as the Zelda series. So you don’t have to go into a menu all the time. You can also quickly equip new items with it. You can also use it as a “handheld” to play virtual console games while lying down on the bed.

  12. Resident evil, zelda, Deus ex, wonderful 101, bayonetta, nintendo land, tekken, zombiu and pikmin 3…It depends on the on game like if its race, fighting or something else. I don’t see the innovation in a racing game like mario kart, but a game like zelda, final fantasy and rayman can use the gamepad pretty well.

  13. Abosulely not. What they’re trying to do is promote Off-TV play and the Pro Controller. This would be a terrible move because not only is the Wii U already cheaper than the PS4 and Xbox One but the GamePad is what sets the Wii U apart from other consoles. Its the reason why the Wii U exists. T_T idiots

    1. One thing I like is playing games from it from my pro controller. I perfer playing the virtual games with the Gamepad on and operating it from my pro controller sometimes over the TV. Nintendo TVii is still in process.

    1. If the Wii U died, I would hope that they would find a way to keep the pad alive. It’s the closest nintendo ever got to this decade! :D

  14. Another western media outlet spewing garbage. We have a pro controller for when developers are too dumb to innovate alá 87 % of every western developer. Just because the dungbox Betamax is suffering, these morons want to attack good old nintendo. Nintendo keep on doing great things. When morons hate, realize what you are doing is beautiful. Monster hunter 3 ultimate, Lego city undercover, offscreen play say hello.

      1. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is a remake of Monster Hunter Tri, an original Wii game. The LEGO game is actually considered to be a pretty good game.

  15. I like the gamepad. Off tv play is a dream. I think the two games that have best taken advantage of the pad is Zombi U and Lego City Undercover. As I’ve said before, when Nintendo creates something, they need to lead. Unfortunately, as of late, they always seem to be playing catch up to their innovative inventions..

  16. that would be stupid. the gamepad is the main attraction of the wiiu. dropping it is unnecessary. it has multiple fucking functions besides being a second screen for games. these useless clowns just want nintendo to lower the price of the wiiu for no reason, even though it’s the cheapest of the three.

  17. The main thing about the gamepad, is CONSOLE GAMING IN YOUR HANDS (OFF TV PLAY). Thats all I want really.

    1. This is True^ and Mii Verse has become a HUGE impact in Nintendo gaming. Drawing Pics, Taking Pics, Touch Screen Comments, etc. The Gamepad makes a bigger difference than many seem to realize. 💋

  18. We all know that Nintendo always makes this controlers for a specific game, the wii mote was made for wii sports, we just haven’t seen the game they made this controller for, maybe pikmin will be that game, or maybe the next zelda, or maybe they just thought it would be a great ideia for a console since it worked so well for the ds, will have to wait a bit more to be sure of this.

    1. That’s not its purpose, it’s a function.

Just like Nintendo has been exploring similar functions for the 3DS and Wii U. The 3DS wasn’t created with that purpose, but it is possible to carry out those functions.

If someone got a 3DS or a Vita to act solely as a controller for another system, then they’re idiots. You can’t spin it any other way.

  19. SherlockWillFightBilbo

It’s absolutely true. Think about multiplayer games like Smash Bros. Having only ONE or possibly TWO GamePads gives that person an unfair advantage. That’s why not even Nintendo is utilising the controller. The only way this controller would work would be if you could use 4 of them.

I love the GamePad. I love off-TV play. I think if Nintendo ditched it now, their console would have NOTHING. NOTHING that the other consoles didn’t have. They’d lose right away. Because the other consoles have better specs and would give the same experience as a non-GamePad Wii U.

    1. For Super Smash, you could totally do 5 player battles! One with the Gamepad and 4 on the screen! 💋

      1. Eeeh dude , it doesn’t matter for 5 players as the players will be on the same screen in ssbu , doesn’t need the gamepad

  20. I agree with that, they could have it as peripheral and NOT as a mandatory thing.

For those who love off-tv and for some games (family games)… That would give about 50gflops extra power to the console for the games.. its a waste.

    1. It’s too late now. If it launched as a peripheral, that might have been a different story.

I too have been slightly disappointed about how the gamepad is being used. Still, I hold out hope that some dev out there is creating ingenious ways to use it in games.

  21. Interesting… Well I bet Time didn’t get a chance to write comments or draw pictures with the controller on Mii Verse so they missed out on one “key” example of how the controller adds to the experience. Other than that, they may be right as of right now. Mario Kart 8 has off T.V play though. I feel like that is something I’ll use A LOT! 💋

    1. I don’t think a writer for an esteemed magazine like Time would waste their hours drawing picture for a bunch of losers on Miiverse.

  22. the u has it all touch control motion and classic control greatest console ever regardless of sales and specs

  23. Kind of agree that Nintendo isn’t using the gamepad to its full potential, but I see no reason to dump it. We still have time to see what they have in store for it.

  24. Wait what now… This is a terrible idea. The Gamepad is already part of the Wii U experience, whether its full potential is used on all games or not is another thing, but they won’t just ditch it at this point.
Everyone currently developing around it will just get screwed over with a move like that. Games that already use it may become virtually unplayable.

So no, this can’t and won’t happen.

  25. Others mentioned Zombiu, which makes great use of it. Also local multiplayer for sonic all stars racing is great because one player uses the pad and the other the tv, no split screen. Also lets not forget game and Wario, which will utilize it in many different ways.

  26. Time is crying doom for a console that hasnt been alive for more than a year. Uses how about nintendo tv, the eshop that can only be accessed through gamepad, tv off play which is really up to the developers…I hate it when people talk out of their asses..opinions Are like assholes everyones got one..

  27. Actually you can use the gamepad to look around in Super mario 3d world, like the feature in Zombie u. In Mario Kart 8 you can switch between the map, power – ups, race stats , and miiverse post without interrupting gameplay.

    1. Wait… YOU CAN READ MIIVERSE POSTS ON THE GAMEPAD IN MARIO KART 8 AS YOU’RE RACING? THAT’S FUCKING AWESOME!!! I’VE BEEN WANTING THE NEXT MARIO KART FOR WII U TO DO THAT!!! AND NOW MY DREAM HAS COME TRUE!!!!

  28. As much as I hate to say it, I agree. I’ve never been too crazy over the Wii U game pad. It just seems like a useless gimmick to me. Like Rob The Robot was. But I think that if Nintendo would just make good use of it, it might change people’s minds.

  29. yes they should, its just going to be a shoelware magnet. im sick of nintendos gimmicky ways. what they should have done was have the pro be the main one and have the wii u gamepad sold off to the side, so it can be played with off tv play and shit!!!!!

  30. Gamepad still win. If I have to choose between Watch Dogs on Wii U or PS4 .. I choose Wii U .. bc of the Gamepad.

    1. every ps4 and xone game would be better on the pad last of us and killer instinct on the greyhound that’s gpad exclusive

          1. i always end up using the wii u pro controller instead. Couldn’t stand using the game pad for monster hunter.

            1. same here, i never use the gamepad… ever!!!! ill always use the wii u pro. i always will use the pro controller over that gimmicked bullshit. if the light ever comes back to that thing, its better left in the darkness with the rats and the insane. wait im playing the wii u…. (flash) aaaahhhhhhhh!!!!! noooo this cant be happening!!!!!!

          2. Nintendo should just become a software publisher. I do not care how much money money they supposedly have.

From the Wii onward all Nintendo consoles will go through the same cycle

            1. Console is announced with an “innovative” new controllers
            2. Nintendo shows a video showing some the possibilities oft the new controller, most of these will never be realized
            3. Nintendo brag about how this time they have third-party support
            4. The console will come out an sell well initially, but then plummet in sales
            5. New comsoles will be announced the trounce the Nintendo system in every way, Nintendo fanboys will defend their system by saying “we have Mario, Zelda, and Smash Bros.!”
            6. Third parties will abandon the the system
            7. Nintendo will announce the same series they been rehashing for years, Nintendo fanboys will be ecstatic and claim the games are amazing and innovative
            8. The games will be delayed multiple times and when they do arrive, disappoint for the most part
            9. Nintendo’s system will turn into a box you only drag out when the family comes to visit

        1. Yes Nuetron, always be as negative against Nintendo as possible!!! You can’t stand Nintendo. Nothing they make pleases you. I love it!!! That’s what makes this blog fun and exciting!!!

          1. Actually I like a few nintendo franchises.

Metroid, Fire Emblem, F-Zero, Eternal Darkness, Xenoblade. They should make more of those caliber of game and less of this “Wonderful World of 101” and “Super Mario Kitty Kat” crap.

              1. Ignoring that, I don’t flip flop. I don’t hate Nintendo. I just hate the gimmicky controllers and kiddy game they make.

              2. hes right though, nintendo needs to create more of that stuff and stop focusing on just fucking mario and zelda!!!!!!! its getting old and is what is ultimately destroying them. the stupid sheep dont help because their fine with the same exact 5 games we always get and are fine with it!!!!! mario, zelda, mario kart, smash bros and retros fucking projects!!!!!! maybe if you guys actually played more games than those fucking 5 maybe they would answer us with more than 10 good games in a whole generation!!!!!!.

                  1. nintendo doesnt care for the darkness….. because they are going insane by the minute… knowing their slow and painful deaths. they dont care for another darkness because they are in the darkness with all the shovelware draining there sanity while the rest have sane non shovelware with them supporting their hardware. that good enough for taking care of the darkness for you!!!!!

                    http://youtu.be/TzaVGHTDNnM?t=12s

do you hear that, its so settle to the ear, and your next!!!!!

  31. Are people really this dumb?! You can play all your games on it instead of the T.V !! Hello ?! … Take Black ops for instance. On the Vita it is trash. Here you can play it as good as any system and TV in a portable fashion.

    1. Not very portable if it lasts only for 3 hours and needs to be within the same building. But still a good feature, i just haven’t really made use of it

  32. He’s kidding, right? Removing the GamePad defeats the purpose of the Wii U, and they do offer a Pro Controller that can be used with most games. Giving people the option to use something other than the GamePad is great, but just because every game doesn’t require it does /not/ mean you should remove it altogether. Besides, the GamePad wasn’t designed for revolutionary gameplay functionality, it was designed for usefulness in the Wii U’s everyday use. Having the Wii U as a TV remote and the off-TV play (which every game at E3 is utilizing at launch, BY THE WAY) is insanely useful. It wouldn’t be embarassing to remove the GamePad, it would be a beyond-moronic decision. This guy at TIME has absolutely no clue what he’s talking about. He obviously just doesn’t get it.

  33. Are they fucking crazy? Sure it’s gimmicky but it doesn’t mean they should remove the Gamepad! Bayonetta 2, Super Mario 3D World, The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD, Mario Kart 8, Rayman Legends, Nintendo Land, Sonic and SEGA Racing Transformed, Zombi U, Deus Ex Directer’s Cut, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and maybe Need for Speed Most Wanted(not sure about how it’s used) uses the Wii U Gamepad in a very unique way! Removing it would just be stupid especially considering how the other companies already copied it!

  34. I think that other companies like EA or so doesn’t take a step further, that they say: “We have this feature, let’s make something out of this!” … NO, they just port their 360/PS3 Versions over to Wii U AND they expecting the sales are great. Of course they are not.
They don’t use the Gamepad in a specific way, they don’t use the Hardware, they don’t add seasonpasses or DLC (like ACIII, COD and NfsMW) on other consoles and their games come out at a later date.
No wonder 3rd party doesnt run on Nintendo consoles. First Party is always strong andevery 3rd party wants to ride on that wave instead of creating REALLY good games.

  35. I don’t agree with Time that Nintendo should ditch the gamepad as it is useful for off tv play, maps, inventory management, multiplayer, etc. BUT I AGREE WITH THEM THAT NINTENDO DID NOT SHOW ANY GAME THAT FULLY UTILIZED THE GAMEPAD in a very innovative way. Ubisoft did that with Zombi U and will be doing it with watch dogs and splinter cell. Wake up Ninty and let’s be real here.

      1. But this won’t be bundled with the console. If you had to use a pro controller then wii u will be a copy of the Xbox. If you have to use wiimotes, then you have to buy a sensor bar and wii remotes before playing anything… basically making it a HD copy of the wii.

  36. The gamepad is a pointless and stupid gimmick. I don’t see any useful way of it being used, i hate the idea of looking up and down every time i need to check something. it’s un-natural and is a pain. The build quality of the gamepad is also terrible. It creaks and makes noises when pressed and just feels cheap. Also look at the 3D on the 3DS. NO ONE USES IT. Why does nintendo rely on stupid gimmicks to sell systems?

          1. Google it. It will give you nightmares also you must be pretty young not to know how a dildo looks like.

              1. To give you pleasure. We all here know that like nintendrones and get sexual pleasre from us. You just want to take that move controller all oiled up ( void warranty)up your ass. Admit it you have a crush on me.

                    1. “young teen”

That tells me she is a child. Get the hell away from me you dirty pedophile.

      1. my wii u made my house crystal clear!!!!!! what a waste of money i could of just bought swiffer nintendo!!!!! a 350$ dust machine, thanks nintendo!!!!!!

    1. they think that the only way intendo can sell is to have some sort of gimmick. NNOOO, they can sell by being cheaper and having well known franchises like mario. then maybe if they didnt use that fucking gimmick developers will actually support it and they can have more games. there gimmick should be mario, that will sell consoles no matter what and with it being cheaper, but nnnoooo instead they have to be a shitty shovelware infested gimmick console!!!!!!

  37. What a stupid notion. That would be like saying the DS should have ditched the second screen because the initial games didn’t use it extensively.

  38. NO! this would be a very bad idea because the wii u also has a dedicated streaming processor for the gamepad. It also makes the wii u what it is, not just another console with a normal controller innovation is what drives nintendo to be where they are today along side their solid IP’s Nintendo is untouchable Haters can hate but at the end of the day haters are just people who can’t accept others opinions.

    1. by the way, i just looked at your twitter. two followers and all your tweets are begging developers to bring games to your pathetic wii u.

          1. If you don’t like the website how about you and Neutron get off here? You don’t seem to like Nintendo anyways.

  39. i enjoy to see how a Non video game media start bitching around like they were all knowing
sorry guys, but the gamepad stays(look sony, they even implement some kind of gamepad)

  40. I say they keep it. The potential it gives is still there, someone just needs to seize it. Forcing innovation down developers throats won’t work because they will come up with half-baked ideas on how to use it *coughkinnectcough*. True innovation will come in time, we just need someone to have that perfect idea.

    1. Although I agree for the most part of what you said, Nintendo should have already followed up with Nintendoland in terms of Gamepad innovation. They should lead the way so developers would follow and thought of that even before launching the console- at least 2-3 games within a year.

Mario Kart could have done that by having something like double dash but in Wii U the second player can scan the environment and be able to block or throw power ups during the race. I played the demo and its the same old tilt controls.

      1. I think we will probably find out more about Mario Kart and it’s unique features over the coming months, new weapons, gamepad functionality, online etc. Still plenty of question mark boxes to tick.

  41. Hmmm….now that I think about it. How bout a $249 with Luigi U and a pro controller package then a $299 Nintendoland or Mario 3D package for the holidays.

  42. Yeah, they could do that, or they could make games that use the Gamepad, include the pro controller and a Wiimote and Nunchuck and drop the price by $50-$70.

  43. Not all Wii U games have to use the GamePad…just like not all Wii games have to use the Nunchuck. Watch everyone go all hater on Nintendo because of TIME’s article. -_-

  44. people shouldn’t talk bad about the wii u’s gamepad because its just so nice. its a tv remote, its touch screen, and most games that i’ve played so far involved me to use the touch screen

  45. As someone who played a majority of these games at e3 I have to disagree. Yes they aren’t using it to a full potential but I really appreciated having the gamepad while playing wind waker, for example. Having the items and map at my fingertips at all times along with the extra buttons made the game so much easier for the player to control. Idunno, honestly most Nintendo fans enjoy the game pad and understand what it is for so it doesn’t really matter what other people complain about.

    1. then fucking kill yourself
you buy a console you complain about them when you didnt even pay A SINGLE GODDAMN PENNY FOR IT
That’s what makes me sick of you fags
pirate a game and complain on how bad it is

  46. Internet channel=great
    ZombieU=awesome
    MH3U=GREAT
    Netflix= Way to go
    MiiVerse=thanks community
Offscreen play= OMG, THIS IS SO GOOD

Time= “nah, my little brain cannot handle 2 screen, lets write an ENTIRE article on how bad it is, ohh, and lets way for M$ check on the wait”

  47. You guys are gonna be surprised and enjoy WiiU definitely someday.

Nintendo is against, but responses to our expectations always.

  48. I agree with the statement that High Command is still not using the Gamepad to it’s real potential and purpose…

However ditching the Gamepad is not on the table…

Off-TV Play is not going anywhere, aswell as the res tof the features…

But hopefully they show something next E3 or in any Nintendo Direct upcoming games that uses the Gamepad as it should be…

    Otherwise I demand a price-cut…

And make NEXT GENERATION GAMES INSTEAD OF OBSOLETE THINKING AND GROW A BRAIN AND SUPPORT A ACTUAL NEXT GEN MACHINE

The article would have had CREDABILLITY

  53. I have 8 titles. Batman, ZombiU and the fantastic Lego City are work well with GamePad features. Mass Effect, Tekken and Need for Speed a little bit less…
But, the New Super Mario Bros. U don’t have any good feature on GamePad (and Balck Ops single player part also)! This is bad, because a Nintendo title without this option?!?

  54. I just want to give a huge thanks to everyone who supports Nintendo! ; )
But I do hope they start making more use out of the game pad than they have so far. We haven’t even seen any games that make use of that AR scanner thingy on the game pad either.

  55. People who say this… only bought their Wii U for CoD.
So far, Nintendo has 2 games out, Nintendo land only scratches the surface, and is more like a tech demo, what the gamepad could do.

For NSMBU, well, its a fucking 2d mario.
Even though Rayman has shown, that gamepad can be used for more than placing blocks.
The off-screen play is what gamepad seems to be for that game.

But, what I see from Ubisoft, theyre making fine use of the gamepad, I hope they take the innovation to the next level, and keep up figuring even more interesting ways to use the gamepad.

And Lego city is also fine example, even though kids might enjoy it even more than I do.
Only disappointment, some gamepad features are limited to certain instances.

  56. Nintendo should keep the gamepad, I find it enjoyable and it’s really neat.
I do wish tho that people would shut the fuck up everytime Nintendo does something new OR whenever they do something old.
I also believe that Nintendo is gonna go futher then the Xbox One and the Ps4 just because the fact that the games Nintendo has are unique and something you don’t see on other consoles, Nintendo really has something for everybody, I just wish people would stop complaining and play the fucking games..
    That’s all for me

  57. the gamepad was the first thing that catched my eye at the begining but i have to say that for some reason i ended up playing with the pro controller.
we needed more power over gamepad. too late now.

  58. is this person is a moron, theirs been duel screen gaming for a decade now. also the game pad is great when u won’t kids off the tv they can just sit there with the pad playing its a pity there ant a option for two or more to stop arguments.

as fore games not using it fully it up to the game developers to think about it i have been playing the ds since it came out and it just give that experiences on a tv console also there is the keyboard function that u don’t need to buy an adapter for like the duel shock. and where i last checked zombi u is a third party publisher that has made a good use of it.

i like it how people who an’t even software developer know more than the game developers argent tits

  59. get a grip sony and ms casual fans

There is no arguing here theres the OPINION XBONER AND PS4 ARE NEXT GEN

And the FACT THAT ONLY WIIU IS

Lol to even try defend kineect and sony kinect to even for a srcond do that shit

Wiiu is the only relivent fucking system THATS A STATMENT OF FACT

  60. The option to have it in some games like Batman, Zombie U, and Nintendo Land actually adds diversity in the unit. With so many titles already using it, I like that it’s not always necessary. I wonder how many of the games announced are simply playable on the Game Pad if someone wants to watch TV. Was this aspect reviewed?

    1. Pretty much, not all games need to use the thing, and if they did then I bet they would be calling it a gimmick, like they did the Wiimote.
Weird they’re not suggesting Microsoft to drop the Used Game policy, shareholders? BTCH PLZ.

  61. What is TIME? That magazine from the eighties? The one owned by the world controllers who also own Microsoft stock?

  62. Absolutely true. It’s pretty obvious by now that not even Nintendo really knows what to do with the gamepad. The only games that really use it are inside Nintendoland, everywhere else it’s more a distraction.

What is worst: it requires developers to put in extra programming hours when porting games over just because it’s there.

  63. first off i love the pad, off tv play is a huge feature, 2 nd so what if every game doesn’t utilize the touch screen they dont have to, and the games that will utilize it just hasn’t come out yet, we are at the start of a new gen ppl are still coming up with new ideas this stuff takes time, until then i get plenty of use out of the pad im writing on right now as im watching anime on the tv, i love that a can watch anime/videos n browse the web all at one time on one system

  64. What they should have done at the start was ditch that stupid Wii remote. I bought into it hard on the Wii, but seriously. The first Mario game on the platform, and if you have more then one person they make you grab Wii remotes?

Call of Duty still supports it, and it makes for unbalanced uneven gameplay. They should have dropped native wii remote support, or functionality on the last gen controller. Now, they need to concentrate on utilizing the gamepad on all of their games.

    1. You’re aware that many multiplayer games in the console have support for the Pro controller, right?

      1. Yeah, I use one. Thanks. That’s still not the point. Drop the Wii Remote! It’s last gen tech. They’re just confusing the masses, and complicating the issues of game development for companies.

  65. To quote the song….”It’s all just a little bit of history repeating” The same was said about the the Wiimote, and it’s more clear this time then back then that the are wrong….For a start, off TV play has turned out to be amazingly handy for me. Still, I wouldn’t complain if Nintendo created a new style pro-controller….They so should make GC Snes and N64 controllers restyled for Wii U…No virtual consoles fans like me will complain, i’ll buy them all!

  66. I’m a huge nintendo fan but sadly I agree with this. I mean, Zombiu and Nintendo Land are the only ones that used the gamepad at full force.
I was only waiting to see the new 3D Mario to check out how would nintendo implement the gamepad in a title like this, and they not even mentioned it (just a stupid function to show hidden itens, it was sooo lame)
Hoping that a future metroid game uses the gamepad well, because I’m already seeing that there’s many ways to do that.

  67. I love the gamepad but Nintendo should really make full use of it. The problem is that Nintendo’s internal game develpment team isn’t accustomed to HD graphics yet as the other articles here stated.

    1. No, that’s just boring. But they wrong about the new Nintendo games doesn’t use it, and they seem to have no clue what the second screen is all about when they call it a touch screen. Zelda will be a lot better with a second screen, as we’ve seen on the 3DS. And Pikmin will really take advantage of the second screen, it’s what the game is all about!
To ditch the Gamepad would be to just confess that the Wii U isn’t worth buying…

  68. This same thing happened with the wii devolpers didnt know how to use the motion controlls but eventually they saw past it and made good games that used the motion controlls as kinda an added bonus so if nintendo drops the game pad what do we have an hd wii

  69. number_1_outlaw@hotmail.co.uk

If Nintendo Ditched the Tablet Controller and dropped the price of the console along with 2 or 3 heavy weight exclusives (good ones not remakes) Nintendo would be the best selling console of 2013. Just that would put them in such a strong position for the coming year, and both MS and Sony would have a lot of catching up to do.

If they don’t then R.I.P Nintendo, it was an awesome run.

  70. What? If a game doesn’t utilize the GamePad, you get an exact mirror of your monitor’s display. Which means I can play Super Smash Bros. while watching something else on TV. I’ll say that again. Play a game with your GamePad, and watch something else on TV. That’s huge to me. Could care less what they do with the GamePad because of that reason right there.

  71. Most of these comments certainly don’t come from people with kids. I agree that the gamepad is not revolutionary for the hardcore gamer, however it is to the parent who can enjoy television while there child continues playing his game or even watches their own programming on Netflix. Take your head out of the hardcore gaming world and view it from a social perspective and it is revolutionary. Nintendo, remember who your market is. Those that criticize here, won’t be playing Wii U anyway.
