Certain developments at SEGA have been made possible due to the success of Sonic movies

The Sonic crew

Japanese gaming publication Famitsu has published an extensive interview with SEGA president and COO, Shuji Utsumi. One of the topics touched upon is the all-important Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Mr. Utsumi says that due to the success of the movies certain developments have been made possible and they hope to make full use of those. He wouldn’t elaborate further on this, but it sounds like there’s some special stuff in the pipeline. Mr. Utsumi also spoke about the upcoming Sonic 4 Movie which he says features some “pretty amazing visuals.” Here’s what he said via machine translation.

In that kind of transmedia business, it seems that Sonic will play a significant role.

Utsumi: Sonic is like an icon of Sega, and I believe that if Sonic thrives, the entire company will thrive. In fact, some developments have been made possible thanks to the success of the Sonic movie, so we hope to make good use of those and connect them to other IPs as well.

I’m also looking forward to the new Sonic movie that is currently in production.

Utsumi: This film also features some pretty amazing visuals. Of course, Jim Carrey and Amy Rose are in it. It’s a really fun movie, so we’ll do our best to make it a big hit in Japan as well.

  1. Not only just Sega, but other gaming movies too. They really nailed the first Sonic movie and had incentive to keep making more movies.

  2. Yet they cheap out and got the team behind Balan WonderWorld to do Sonic Superstars. Sonic Frontiers did alright due to luck and probably all the Super Sonic Fights. Sega needs real talent and to spend real money and time for quality instead of cloud chasing trends and cheap garbage!
