Cerny Hopes PlayStation’s Legacy Can Match Nintendo’s

ps4_logo

PlayStation 4 system architect Mark Cerny has told an audience in Spain that he hopes the PlayStation brand can have the same endearing impact on the video games market as Nintendo does. Cerny explained that what he respects the most about Nintendo is the incredible continuity they have in the form of a core group of individuals that have worked together for over 30 years. Cerny says that he hopes Sony can replicate this.

“I have a great friend who lives in Kyoto in the eastern part of Japan. He runs a developer there and he’s worked with both Sony Computer Entertainment and Nintendo over the years, and he says that what he respects the most about Nintendo is the incredible continuity they have in the form of a core group of individuals that has now worked together for over 30 years.”

“Well, we on the PlayStation side of the business have only about 20 years together now, but I’m really looking forward to the next decade or two with Shu [Yoshida], Andy [House] and the other amazing talents of Sony Computer Entertainment, and I think by the end of it we’ll even have my friend in Kyoto telling everyone how our values – held strongly over a great period of time – had such an influence over the world of games.”

          1. Yes, who wouldn’t want a thousand shooters?
Oh, maybe someone who is sick of them being shoved on the shelves each month?
If I wanted to replay the same game for ten years then my PS3 library would be larger than the four games I own for it.

      1. If you’re gonna take the most successful Sony consoles you could also take the most successful Nintendo consoles, fantard.
DS, Wii and 3DS alone destroy Sony’s numbers by themselves, Wii with more than 100 million consoles sold all by itself.
Also, while this may be considered successful from a business standpoint, it doesn’t address the central topic here.
This man is talking about influence, about having a place in history, making a difference in the art of videogame making, not about numbers.
So I am sorry, but other than mildly successful consoles, Sony doesn’t have a mark in the industry, it doesn’t have anything to it’s name other than a history of third party leeching and copycat peripherals, it hasn’t established anything influential, not franchises, or peripherals, not even console specs (Thanks to its ongoing fight with N64, GameCube, XBOX and 360).
All Sony consoles have amounted for in the last decade is the unending CoD-brand recolors.

        1. I agree with in you on the influence thing, Sony has not yet reached Nintendo’s level of influence and Mark Cerny clearly understands that. But your numbers are off, DS + Wii + 3DS = ~286.5 million, while PS1 + PS2 + PS3 = ~340 mil (though the 3DS certainly is going to sell a lot more). The difference is even more stark when you look at software sales, with DS + Wii + 3DS= ~1.77412 billion and PS1 +PS2 +PS2 = ~3.3351 billion . Nintendo obviously wins when you include all the systems (though you’d also have to include ~85 mil from PSP + Vita) just by virtue of being in the industry far longer.

Sony has also had much more than just “mildly successful consoles”. The PS2 is by far the most successful console of all time with 157.68 million sales and 1.661 billion softwares sales. In hardware sales, the DS is not far behind at 154.65 million, but owing to the fact that home consoles tend to have a significantly higher software/hardware sale ratio due to a variety of factors, the DS has only 798 million software sales, and we all know that is where the real money is made. PS1 was also more successful than the WIi and is the second most successful console (beaten by handhelds in hardware sales, but well ahead in software sales), with 104.25 million units sold and 962 million sold in software. The Wii isn’t far behind though with 99.92 million units sold and 889 million in software.

Sony has inarguably had the the most home console success since they entered the industry and probably even the most success if you include handhelds, and they have contributed greatly to expanding the gaming industry. And I don’t know how you’re supposed to establish something influential in terms of console specs since those are always supposed to improve, but they have the most powerful hardware in every single generation they’ve been a part of, including the next one.

Nintendo being thw company that really set the gaming industry on the path that led it to what it is today has definitely had more influence, but you’re selling Sony way short.

            1. i wud lower ps2 rates cause of those 4 to 6 extra years ps2 had above other consoles 11 to 13 years of ps2 extra sales

          1. ps2 is weakr than GameCube and Xbox. and if theyr so influential, why do they keep copying from Nintendo?

        2. wanna know something funny , lol the ps2 had almost 11 to 13 years of sales , nintendo’s gamecube was discontinued in 2007, thats why sony sales are high , that guy should like take out those extra years that the ps2 had above the gamecube and calculate the total of consoles for the ps2 sales as it had ended in 2007 … funny as it is i still find it kind of a low sale rate for sony considering all those years of ps2

          1. “On November 29, 2005, the PlayStation 2 became the fastest game console to reach 100 million units shipped, accomplishing the feat within 5 years and 9 months from its launch. This achievement occurred faster than its predecessor, the PlayStation, which took 9 years and 6 months to reach the same benchmark”

    1. Uncharted, God of War, Resistance, Infamous, Sly Cooper, Little Big Planet, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo, The Last of Us, Gravity Rush.

      1. The lack of Parappa the Rapper is disturbing. He was huge on the original PlayStation, but his PS2 sequel was highly underrated. ;(

          1. nintendo could be the untouchable king of franchises if rare still was with them. rareware probably was the only other company that could match the magic of nintendos franchises. nintendo cant just rely on their franchises though.

            1. Agreed, banjo-kazooie and Conker ALONE would settle me. If Nintendo bought those two IPs and got some third part support, look out Ps4!

            2. Rare dissolved a few years after it left Nintendo, all there is now to it is the name, it hasn’t created anything worthwhile in more than a decade, just like SquareSoft.
The people who made those names big now are in Monolith and Platinum.

        1. Guess you haven’t seen the sales of those games….

          Thanks for proving HIS point.

          Stop being such a fangirl.

      2. Ethan didn’t specify. He meant GOOD exclusives that have a huge impact on the gaming community and pop culture.

        1. Little Big Planet = Paved the way of creative gaming in the main stream
Ratchet and Clank = Helped the Platforming Genre take flight once more until Mario came back.
Killzone = Created a new online experience that is still being rivalled to this day.
Uncharted = Mixing Action and Adventure into a breath taking Story and visuals.
Parapa The Rapper = Helped Rhyme game become popular until Guitar Hero.

So really there are games that Sony has made that are GOOD exclusives that have had a HUGE impact on modern gaming and pop culture.

I’m sorry but you are just acting like a spoilt Nintendo Fangirl.

          1. You make good points, but if you asked anybody if they knew who Parapa the Rapper was, who would know? Point being Nintendo’s IPs are more known than Sony’s IPs. I’m not saying Sony has horrible IPs, I’m just stating the truth. I like almost every IP from Sony. Just deal with it.

          2. Silent (@SilentNintendo)

want to test nintendo’s legacy, type in google ”do a barrel roll” then do a barrel roll yourself.

      3. Those are PS2 and PS3 IP besides Gran Turismo and Twisted Metall the rest are not Legacy. Gravity Rush and The Last of Us are established.

      4. Oh goodie, Mario/Donkey Kong knock-offs, Zelda knock-offs, shooters and the unpopular alternatives to racing games, great legacy, such innovation.
I think I can sum up Sony’s place in the industry this way: “Move’s publicity campaign”.

        1. “EVERY SINGLE SHOOTER EVER MADE IS BAD BECAUSE I DON’T LIKE CALL OF DUTY!”
          Your butthurt is showing, child.

    2. Its clear sony has always wanted to emulate Nintendo, that’s no secret. They’re always imitating them, and they admit how much they respect Nintendo. Now fanboys stfu.

  1. Wow, I’ve never knew the makers of PlayStation could be so desperate. But at least their legacy is better than the X-Derp.

      1. They want to make themselves as big and memorable as Nintendo, something they never obtained since their arrival.

    1. What galaxy are you in? You don’t see that they might come close, but will NEVER match nor surpass Nintendo’s legacy.

        1. Says the guy who posts nothing noteworthy in any post. He actually has a great point, and a true point at that.

    1. *Take deep breath* You have a point.

I won’t argue with you because its clear that Sony has the upper hand now a days ^^
Nintendo is a great company but they do make slip ups from time to time just like Sony, maybe a little more but they sort it out in the end… Unlike Microsoft who has basically lost all hope in selling their next gen shit called the Xbox One or as its real name the Xbox Done.

            1. the vc made me find one of the best games of all time for me. secret of mana. secret of mana 2 is the most overrated pile of shit ever though, destroying everything i liked about the first. now i play old games that i havnt played on emulators because i was sick of waiting for nintendo to releases some of their old games. yeah the wii sucked.

            2. Yep, compared to how things are now. I never really had a problem with the Wii (because I was too young to care). The only problem I had with it is that I got it right after the 3DS was announced. Ever since I got my 3DS, I rarely play on the Wii. The console always made me bored. It’s literally collecting dust as I’m typing this comment. All in all, I wish I never bought it.

              1. you havnt played xenoblade have you. yeah the wii sucks though but if you bought a shitty system, you could have atl east have bought the few great games that were on the crapy thing.

                1. The only great games I had for the Wii was Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart Wii.

Yeah, I wasn’t into gaming as I am now.

                    1. No more heroes, is a solid game plus there is a second one. Also de blob is another great game. There’s two, lol.

            3. Why does everyone hate the Wii so much D: It had ALOT of great games. It may have been lacking Starfox and FZero but there were many other games that took there place. Remember what you said to me last week? yea i remember too…

              1. Jesus its annoying mynintendo news trolls are idiots. We cant read a worthwhile thread thanks to these dorks always hating n complaining. You must drive your parents fucking crazy, I fell sorry for them.

            1. If the Wii was called the “Ultra Nintendo” do you think people would have liked that more? lol But yeah, the Wii wasn’t a total shitstorm. But it could’ve been much better than it was.

              1. But how is it a dissapointment? The only problem with it was power… which is the Wii U’s problem right now..

                1. In my opinion, the lack of games hurt the Wii. Sure there are notable games for it, but I don’t have a huge list of Wii games I have or want. I don’t mind that the power of the Wii U is lower than Ps4. I’m not a graphics-junkie.

            2. I like the name believe it or not because it actually made sense.

As for the graphics, I didn’t really care because it still looked good compared to the DS.

Come on, I’m not trying to be a asshole but these are my (only) negative opinions towards Nintendo. Other than that, they’re my favorite company.

        1. Because Nintendo has been out done by Sony is a few occasions so really even though its an Opinion he has a good point.

Wii was a flop towards some of the “core gamers” even though I liked it, the only games I played on it were Nintendo Games not 3rd Party Games. Also, you may notice that I said both companies are good so really I’m not bashing either.

          1. The Wii actually wasn’t a flop towards “core gamers.”
            playeressence.com/the-great-hardcore-lie-exposed-wii-did-not-lose-core-gamers/

          1. Then PS4 and Wii U will be King and Queen of the Console Nation whilst Xbox One is the Jester that no one likes.

              1. Much better, the Jester role should belong to the Ouya because even it still has some people who like it.

    2. The 3DS begs to differ. The fact that you are on a nintendo centric site trying to convince us that Sony is better begs to differ. If we the nintendo fans went and said that on a Sony site it would hold credence. As it stands you are merely enhancing just how great nintendo is :).

        1. Legacy encapsulates a company. Wii is a legacy also, it houses Super Mario galaxy 1 and 2; then Xenoblade chronicles. Study what am posting and your mind shall clarify that legacy will incorporate all their consoles. Better still Mark Cerny supports my shared words on Nintendo’s awesomeness. I’d you doubt further, Shigeru Miyamoto-San saved western video gaming in 1984-1985 :).

      1. That is a handheld though my friend, not a console and I’m guessing you haven’t seen the sales of the PlayStation 2 then, have you?

    3. Let me fix that for you… there you go:
      Nintendo > Sony > Microtransactions, I mean, uhh… No, that’s what I mean.

        1. The DS passed the Playstation 2 sales in December 2012 or early 2013 :). 165 million consoles sold and counting for the amazing DS.

          1. Holy shit, it did!
Well, hey. Give the PS2 credit where it’s due. It lasted quite a long time and it did leave an amazing legacy. I still say both are amazing.

          2. The number of PS2s sold hasn’t been updated in quite a long while. So we can’t exactly say this has truly happened.

              1. I don’t quite understand what I’m supposed to get over. I didn’t express any kind of opinion towards either company and “getting over” something means to accept something I am not very happy with, but since you don’t know my opinion about Nintendo I don’t know what made you say that.
Concerning the topic itself: If you are so sure about it, please show me the latest report of the total PS2 sales. That will show when the last time the numbers were updated was.

          3. Handhelds =/= Home consoles. You can’t really compare sales figures of the two. That’s like comparing sales of desktop computers to smartphones.

            1. But they are still consoles. I say there is nothing wrong with comparing the two, especially if we are talking about their legacy.

            2. Monster hunter 3 Ultimate on the Wii U and 3DS are interchangeable. With the Wii U producing 1080P graphics at 45-60 frames per second. Both play video games. So yes they can be quantified together.

              1. I know they’re both gaming systems and I know what the capabilities are…

What I’m pretty much saying is, it is expected for handhelds to sell more than home consoles because each individual can own one.

In a family of four, two kids might have a DS each, whereas only one PS2 is in the house.

It really shouldn’t matter which sold more, but the fact is the DS did sell more according to the most recent statistics.

                But anywho…

  2. Sorry, not going to happen Cerny. Nintendo houses some of the best developers of all time, guys such as Miyamoto, Aonuma, Sakurai, Tezuka, Kondo, etc. On top of that, gaming’s most treasured franchises.

Right now Sony is on their fourth home console, by that time Nintendo was on the Gamecube and already had well established key figures and exclusive franchises.

  3. Well they did make the best selling console of all time. So I guess I could say they already did.

    1. DS is made by Nintendo and it has sold more than the PS 2. In short Mark Cerny is saying Sony respects Nintendo and shall emulate and copy as need be to make Sony Playstation brand better.

        1. Really? Let’s see…Sly Cooper, Little big planet, gravity rush, starhawk, jak and daxter, parapa the rapper, ratchet an clank, infamous, medieval, ape escape, twisted metal. Get head out of nintendo’s ass bro.

          1. I bet if you show Mario to ANYONE they will know who it is in a second. If you do the same for ANY of those character’s they will have to think for awhile. Some of those NOBODY knows..

      1. And you dare calling yourself a “gamer” ? Pathetic fanboys like you make me sick. Let me give you an advice: start trying to enjoy video games as a whole, regardless of the name of the company they have written on them.
Sony doesn’t need to copy anyone, they are doing perfectly fine as they are. That copying excuse is getting old anyway.

        1. “Sony doesn’t need to copy anyone, they are doing perfectly fine as they are. That copying excuse is getting old anyway.”

Ignoring that Sony is pushing developers to make Vita standard.as.a.PS4 controller like Wii U gamepad. Also ignoring the haters saying “Nintendo is doomed” since the N64 is getting old. But because they are bashing Nintendo it doesn’t bother you, yet when it comes to Sony getting bashed.its getting old.

  4. look Sony you’re a great company and all and hey the PS4 looks very very promising! But it is nearly impossible to recreate what Nintendo has.

  5. See! When people don’t let their “Fanboyism” speak for them, people say respectful things. 💋

  6. If you say Mario, Metroid, or Zelda, EVERYONE will know what you are talking about.

I don’t even know what most of the Sony exclusive games are about or what they look like. I know they are popular to games, I’ve heard of them, but have no idea what they look like or anything.

granted, I only buy Nintendo, but I’m saying regardless of Gaming strength at the moment, Nintendo has reached everyone with their characters. Sony has not come close to achieving this. Their IP’s are not legend yet.

    1. But Sony has Uncharted, God of War, Killzone, Infamous, Heavy Rain, Ratchet!

      (lol)

But yeah, I don’t get why people try and act like Sony’s franchises are on the same level as Nintendo’s. Nintendo has the best franchises out there, nothing to even discuss

      1. Exactly. I mean, there are pockets of gamers for each IP that will adore their favorite characters, and that’s perfectly fine, but Nintendo has the most Legendary Characters under one roof.

I would say xBox’s “Chief” or “Halo” actually does come close to this status, kind of the new kid in the hall of fame of exclusive characters. (back down everyone from jumping on my ass for saying that, I’m just stating the obvious here)

Microsoft secured xBox with Halo. Frankly, it keeps their ass above water and builds their install base. We’ll see if Halo can save them this Gen. I guarantee you, if they pump every bit of power from xBox one into a new halo game, they will survive another Gen. THAT’S the power of a strong IP, and Nintendo has half a dozen that are stronger than Halo, which is why doomsayer’s are always wrong at predicting Nintendo’s doom.

      2. Uncharted or Unchanged as I call it. Its a Tomb Raider rip off. Same type of game just with a Guy instead of Lara Croft. Hell the Last Of Us feels very similar to Uncharted for me. The whole flow of the game it being 3rd person the shooting so forth. God of War has past its prime. It has almost as many collections as the number of games…Killzone just generic shooter. Infamous is pretty good. Heavy Rain…ehh if you like controlling an interactive movie. Ratchet is good.

    2. At this point for Nintendo (Gamecube) Nintendo had well established characters and franchises. With Sony their franchises aren’t only not that popular but they keep moving onto new IP’s, ditching their old ones.

    3. Who’s the star of Kill zone and who’s the star of Halo. I know Mickey Mouse, Pluto, Mario Peach, Donald Duck and Crash bandicoupe a former PlayStation exclusive which would have been a great face for PlayStation.

  7. I thought Cerny was Madea for Sony and I was so confused why Sickr would be talking in a black man dressed as a fast black woman accent. I read it when I first woke up, and honestly it made me upset until I woke up and realized what was going on.

  8. Mark Cerny has just marketed the Wii U and 3DS by those statements. Nintendo is so good that even when they themselves have no clue how to market their products, their competition unknowingly and wittily advertise for them. Mark Cerny in his statement is lowering microsoft and the xboxone, while uplifting the Wii U, knowing very well that by selling their FPS onslaught more than xbox, while letting nintendo cash in on RPGs from the west and east, Sony gains market share. Sony’s best tactic is to promote nintendo, while sidelining the xboxone. Xboxone is basically a PS4 with a weaker RAM and added confetti. WiiUPS4 will be this generations gaming combo. Especially since Microsoft will not have a year head start. Plus the abandonment issues from xbots won’t easily be fixed. Ms better pray the xbone does not RROD, or Kinect spaz.

    1. 3DS! That answers a saving grace that was blessed by a great being in heaven. Thus the timely translation of the name nintendo ‘LEAVE LUCK TO HEAVEN.’ That because we are to work hard and diligently and not rely on luck.

May 2013 the 3DS outsold all consoles in :

      1) Japan
      2) Europe
      3) The Americas
      4) in places and spaces in between and regions unmentioned that are becoming economic power houses.

        1. Gaming. I game nintendo and Sony. So when Sony fanboys and girls don’t give credit and their corporate wigs do, I have to rectify the dilemma. Shadow of the colossus. Great Sony game, give me that over drake and last of us any day. Throw in last guardian too :).

    2. Iceazima youre a douchbag. Nintendo is doomed only in your dreams. Most profitable gaming company bar none. stfu

  9. It will never happen, simply because Sony is a company which sells everything in electronics, whereas Nintendo ONLY makes video games.

  10. Haven’t they already built such a big legacy with PS1 and PS2 sales? Behh. I do like Sony, but they are second place in my opinion. MS is 3rd and Nintendo is 1st.

  11. Well see if Sony even survives as long as this Guy wants. Sony needs to start making money again and a lot of it not just from their gaming division but as a whole company. Otherwise bye bye Sony.

    1. Microsoft is more than likely going to give up if sales of the Xbox One are poor which is now a 89.9% chance of that happening

      1. You’re right. But the hating gamers part is something only M$ has shown.
I can’t imagine who would stick by a company like that.

  12. I think Sony has a good library of games plus, their console are amazing to boot. PS4 is an example of them doing things the right way:

    1. Cheaper Price
    2. More Power for your Money
    3. Amazing Exclusive titles/Content
    4. Small, basic yet futuristic Design
    5. Well Made Dualshock 4

PS3 is an example of them doing things the wrong way:

    1. Too Expensive at launch
    2. Confusing Cell Processor
    3. Some very crappy ports from Xbox 360 (Which will change this gen)
    4. Poorly designed controller
    5. George Forman Grill… need I say more.

I still love the PlayStation brand and I think Sony deserves to be side by side with their mother Nintendo who basically gave birth the PlayStation and I’m glad of it.

Xbox and Microsoft can go suck a dick.

      1. Funny how you ignored the loads of Sony Software line up and announced 3rd Party Games at E3. Let me get some burn heal cream for you Xbox Fangirl

        1. Ignoring that those 3Rd party titles are multi plat.Unlike Wii U’s exclusives only for Nintendo. And BTW ignoring that I’m a Nintendo fan not a Xbox fan.

  13. Nintendo is awesome, very respectable company, but they need to grow their staff as the video game market grows.

      1. Tealc from stargate with Richard dean Anderson aka MacGyver :). Colonel O’neal. I see what you did there Simply G.

        1. And like General O’Neill, I mock everything and everyone, including Gods…

Thankfully, only Xbots needs to be destroyed and the Apples have to avenge their stolen “formula” that the Xbot God Bill Gates took…

    1. The Cheif Sonyan designer giving credit to nintendo. Hope his Sonyan fanboys take notes. Especially the new Sony General. He shall be battling with his own Mark Cerny who is praising nintendo :).

Can’t wait to see Jelly Bean’s take on his Sony designer recognizing the greatness of nintendo. lol.

        1. You are correct. My general is off leading the troops in a battle against the crippled Xbot Armada. Myself, Neutron, and Aeolus are in charge of holding down our fort on this battlefield until he returns.

    1. What he’s talking about has nothing to do with characters and pop culture. He’s talking about the gaming industry, Sony Computer Entertainment, and the influence the business has on the industry. That includes, but is not limited to, the interpersonal relationships like he mentioned in the interview, and the longevity of the PS brand.

  14. Just wait for the 20 exclusives sony has under their sleeves which of those 20 12 are new IPs, not to mention they have another ten coming out next year.

  15. How about we agree on the fact that if EITHER Sony or Nintendo kick the bucket, the gaming industry will suffer from it. Can we all agree on this?

  16. Nintendo’s legacy will be that they have been the most successful company in video game history. Has generated the most revenue. Has had the most successful franchises. Has innovated the most in terms of hardware and software, and has lasted the longest. Their business model has been to come up with an idea, and then build hardware and software around that idea.

Sony’s legacy will be that their biggest successes have come directly from Nintendo’s failures. That they have gotten fat off of food left on the table by Nintendo. That their deep 3rd party support is a direct result of Nintendo’s failure in that area. That they have managed to create 1st party content that is on-par with some of Nintendo’s franchises. Their business model has been to come up with something they feel would be a tangible reason for the general consumer to have their product in the house. Then to build a machine with the priority of specs to match or outrank their competitors. Then to figure out what kind of games can best utilize that hardware. It also will be that they have been the only REAL competition for Nintendo.

All due respect to Microsoft but the past 20 years has basically been Sony VS. Nintendo with Nintendo really winning the battle only because of console volume. These are approximate numbers.

    PS1 – 102 million
    PS2 – 155 million
    PS3 – 76 million
    PSP – 76 million
    PS Vita – 2.2 million

    411.2 million consoles

    N64 – 32 million
    GameCube – 21 million
    Wii – 99 million
    Wii U – 3.5 million
    GBA – 81 million
    DS – 154 million
    3DS – 32 million

    422.5 million consoles

With two more consoles on the market than Sony, Nintendo has only managed to best Sony by 11 million total. Now I don’t expect Sony to EVER outsell the total number of all Nintendo consoles throughout history, but Sony definitely has been a threat to Nintendo.

      1. The PS2 has sold 155 million and the DS has sold 154 million. The PS2 reclaimed the top spot after the holidays before Sony discontinued it. The DS will obviously surpass it this holiday season, but as it stand right now the PS2 is back on top.

      1. No I didn’t.

“the past ****20 YEARS**** has basically been Sony VS. Nintendo”

I thought that pretty well explained the point of the matter. The NES and GameBoy were long before Sony came into the game in 1994. Nor did the GameBoy or GameBoy Color run up against the PSP.

But I should have known that rather than actually addressing the point at hand I would get a but of replies filled with semantics and red herrings.

      1. That was the last time I checked. Since I am not necessarily interested in Vita sales numbers I didn’t know it sold as many. Not really relevant to the point though.

      1. Like I said in the beginning, this is about the 20 year history of Sony vs. Nintendo. Not about what happened before. But since you want to bring the pre-Sony days into this, one of the reasons why the SNES triumphed over the Genesis was because of it’s incredible sound card built by….guess who? Sony.

It was even better than the sound card used in the more powerful NEO-GEO.

But staying on task. This is about Sony vs Nintendo head-to-head only.

  17. Well, they are the only two worth giving a damn about. Nintendo’s slightly better, but they’re both better than Microsoft.

  18. Damn you people have to give some respect I Sony. He’s praising Nintendo for what it has done for the gaming industry and hopes to do the same. I’m mainly a Nintendo Gamer ( that’s why I’m on this site) but anyone who wants to better the gaming industry is good in my mind. Sure Nintendo has the ultimate legacy but shit, he wasn’t even saying they didn’t have t

  19. And thus the seeds of a future Sony/Nintendo partnership have been sewn. Can’t wait to see the full grown tree.

  20. Pingback: Mark Cerny: Queremos que el legado de Sony sea comparable con el de Nintendo | NintenDominante

    1. Ignoring that Sony may have had that technology before Wii but any idiot knows that the design copied the Wii.

  21. Sony are not even comparable to Sega or old school Square. They have no legacy whatsoever, and will not be fondly remembered 100’s of years from now, whereas Nintendo will forever be timeless and remembered.

  22. They’d be better remembered if they forgot old grudges and did some sort of half-way merger with Nintendo.
If they did that, Microsoft would be in DIRE straits.

  23. I love how all these Nintendo fans keep using the “Mario, Zelda, F-Zero etc.” Argument yet most of them had as much impact on the industry as Sony’s 1st party games.

Face it kiddies Nintendo and Sony are evenly matched

    1. Ignoring All Stars is not evenly matched with Super Smash. Also ignoring that Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were ranked highest video games of all time. And lastly ignoring that in order to be evenly matched with Nintendo, the handheld platform must be a success.

      1. Also ignoring that PS4 needs to display maximum graphics on games more than a Nintendo game needs to in order to be successful. 3D Mario, Donkey Kong, Wind waker doesn’t need the best graphics. After all why are 3DS sales killing Vita’s.

          1. Let’s see Sony make a Plat former look cartoonish and outsell Wind Waker. Let’s see Sony make another 2D adventure for either PS4 or Vita and let’s see if it can surpass DKCR. Last I checked Sony needs graphical appearances displaying movie images over actually gameplay to be a success. That’s why its got 8 cores.

            1. Crash was a would have been a good mascot for PlayStation. Like Sonic is for Sega and Mario is for Nintendo. He was the most known former IP for PlayStation. Croc too.

              1. If they kept him crash bandicope racing would have been a threat to Mario Kart. They could have had Crash tennis, crash soccer. All stars would have been better. They could have used some of the characters in Crash racing to make an adventure like Banjo in Diddy Kong. Too bad they got too caught up in fps and graphics. Sony killed a lot of entry original IPS with many opportunities on PS1.

                1. And the reason why many people are not familiar with characters from FPS titles is because they are the same game with another title. You want a game that is different from another games. That’s why people are know Link, Kirby, Starfox, Metroid and people are getting more familiar with Olimar. At least people know a Pikmin which they know is from Nintendo when they see it. If you were to show some screens one Halo, the other Kill zone and the other Mario. People would know Mario is from Nintendo but people would have a difficult time knowing which game is an exclusive to which. People knows Sonic is from Sega.

  25. I sure hope they can do that too; that’s exactly what I expected from them during their PS3 days, but then I remembered it was only their third console. One reason I stick with Nintendo is longevity, which they have.

  26. The last of us seems like it could make a legacy for Sony considering its top on the charts everywhere even beating out Nintendo’s games like animal crossing in Ninty’s homeland, Japan.
