New Nintendo Web Framework Makes Porting Games To Wii U Quick And Easy

At the Game Developers Conference in Germany, Nintendo unveiled a host of new details on its Nintendo Web Framework, a program that will allow developers to port games to the Wii U simply and easily, in copy-and-paste fashion. In March, Nintendo had revealed that Wii Street U was developed with the program, hinting at its design, but today the company has given a full-blown demonstration on the application. The Web Framework is said to allow games programmed in Javascript and HTML5 to be ported to the Wii U with almost no alterations to their original source code.

A demonstration was given using an 8-bit platformer, in which it was shown that the Wii U gamepad can be used by developers to guide the process of converting software to the Wii U. The gamepad displays “important statistics and debug options”, which can then be manipulated to test the functionality of the software.

It was also revealed that the first official game developed with the new Nintendo Web Framework will be Glandarius Wing Strike, a futuristic iOS shooter game that has been around for about four years.

This new program positions Nintendo to grow its Wii U eShop by allowing developers to port a large number of titles quickly. Nintendo seems to be heeding the calls of its fans, as complaints around the Wii U have centered around its number of games. With several new indie games already making their way to the console prior to this announcement about the new Web Framework, Wii U owners can look forward to a steady stream of eShop titles in the months to come.

    1. Indeed…

From now on nobody can blame our Empire for framerate issues or other nonsense complaints as we will know who’s failt it will be…

      *Looking at the lesser forces*

    1. I think that’s the reason why the test game is an ios game. Also plant vs zombie 2 is part of EA so their is almost no hope.

      1. True…but still. Third party support or not…if Nintendo was really all that worried all they would have to do is buy out a few studios (which they have more than enough money to do so) and turn them into second party developers. This could be one huge reason they keep catering to indie devs. Maybe when they have enough experience Nintendo will (in best Godfather like voice) “make them an offer they can’t refuse”.

  1. Fuck!!
WiiU doesnt need more indie/eShop games, but needs multiplatform games like, idk, the division? BF? GTA? KH? Im getting tire of Nintendo at this point, there are not games for WiiU, and the third party games are bad ports…

    1. Fail. Most Indie Devs are far better then most 3rd parties these days. Eventually the current trash of 3rd parties will fall and these Indie devs will rise up and replace them as the new gen of 3rd party.

  2. This is only for indie games not dull games on disc don’t get your hopes up. PS4 is a PC which every programmer learns how to develope for in school

        1. Indies can. Third party’s can’t even properly port to PC so is not an issue about power but the developers lack of brains.

        2. Its a games console with different architecture, what they’ve always been. Still not a difficult or expensive machine to port to

  3. “Nintendo seems to be heeding the calls of its fans, as complaints around the Wii U have centered around its number of games”

Sorry, am I reading that right? There would not be complaints if people developed for the console. Makes me angry.

    1. They odds are will. This seems more focused on Indy devs and doesn’t help if the developer wants their title to be disc based.

  4. very gd news for indie developers indeed..it will become super simple and straightforward for them to port their games now on

  5. I guess this is good news but also it’s not helping any 3rd party disc base games out. I guess reggie lied when he said that there are going to have alot of third party AAA support for the Wiiu most of the third party AAA games for the Wiiu are just late ports or are gimped versions of a game.

  6. I love this! I hope that means games from PS3 and Xbox360 can be easily ported to the EShop, like Resident Evil 5, 6, and other games

    1. He’s kinda right about nintendo on the price cut and software. Hell, in fact he hit most of it on the mark…just goes to show you that great minds think alike. Why do I say that? I ran into a video stating from a ridiculously, RIDICULOUSLY, loooooooooong ass article, with my same suspensions over the years, on how nintendo and other system works. I can’t find either one…dam I must have gotten rid of that artical on accident.
