The Japanese charts are in via Famitsu rather than Media Create for Week 52, 2013 (Dec 23 – Dec 29). The Nintendo 3DS was on fire during the Christmas period in Japan as Nintendo’s handheld shifted an impressive 208.893 units. The Wii U also had a good week in Japan as Nintendo’s latest home console sold 79.174. Apologies for not posting these earlier today, but they normally come through on a Wednesday so I missed them. Anyway, here’s the Japanese hardware and software charts.

#WiiuDoomedExposed
It does well, and you say it’s doomed.
#TrollStupidityExposed
Doing well s doing what the 3ds doing. The wiiu has only been doing this for December. It barely managed to edge out the 8 year old ps3. Ps4 gonna leave WiiU eating dirt. #Ps4japanesedominance
If you’re going to troll you need to be good at it…. fucking scrub
You tell ’em! c:
lol @ “scrub” … my bro says that all the time.

Well, you got a laugh out of me. Good job.
NSMBU outsold 3D World? That’s messed up.
famitsu incudes console bundles.
Fuck yeah that’s messed up.
2D Mario has outsold 3D Mario in Japan before. Like NSMBWii outselling Galaxy (can’t remember if it was 1, 2 or both). Can’t remember comparison between SM3DL and NSMB2 in Japan, but I would have thought the latter would have been doing better.
WiiU second best selling console in Japan this Week, just like the last few weeks :o Seems like the PS3 is burned out at 27k (I’m curious to see the PS4 launch sales). But FFX gave the Vita a big bump and its just a few thousand units behind the WiiU.
imo its mind boggling that Nintendo didnt secure FF on the WiiU. Couple that with the lack of MGS and KH on the system and it isnt even an option for the japanese hardcore gamer. If they just had those few franchises on their console, I think they would dominate Japan with both home console and handheld and make big bucks there. BUT NO, Nintendo gonna Nintendo…
Sry to tell you this but nintendo aint goin to secure games that they could buy later on when square enix goes bankrupt.
Yeah because Sony is surely not trying to secure those exclusives now let alone later when and if SE goes bankrupt. Theyve dump hundreds of millions on gaikai, they have enough to bid for SE IP’s.
no they dont have enough to bid.
How did the Xbots increase their sales by 100%?!
Our homeworld should initiate an X-Bot Extermination – Metroid Program!
Um.. Game Freak developed Pokemon X/Y, not the Pokemon Company.
I am curious how the Wii U sold in the North America. I couldn’t find the thing on the shelf most of the holiday season. There were times where my local Target had 20-30 Xbox Ones but no Wii Us.
Wii U is doing pretty well. It outsold the Xbox One.
Hopefully doing well enough to keep the 3rd party developers making games for it.
I’m confident it will stay on top of the X1. This year Nintendo will prove to developers that they are still relevant in the home console market.
Nevermind Xbox one, it will surpass the ps4 when Mario kart and smash bros come out.
Source? Vgchartz aint a source btw.
NPD figures should come through in the next week or so for December. Hopefully we get an actual figure this time rather than estimations.
Agreed. VGChartz differs wildly from actual sales most of the time, so hopefully NPD’s numbers will show great improvement. I still think that the Wii U is going to miss the 9 million mark by March, but if it sells somewhere in the realm of 150K-250K worldwide every week, it shouldn’t miss it by much. It needs to sell like 1.5 million units a month to hit that mark, which just isn’t going to happen.
Hey Sickr, I just want to know if the staff is thinking about overhauling the comment system or switching to Disqus for better moderation. Thanks!
There’s no such thing as moderation on Mynintendonews.
Disqus isn’t available for sites hosted on WordPress.com.
Glad to see the Vita and the Wii U are catching up a little.
Not too bad considering Wii U still lacks games.
All three next gen systems do at the moment.
3? i only count 2
Count again.
1….2
Oh wait does the Ouya Count?
To me, next generation means innovation, not power. Nintendo changes the way we play games, they are still about fun. That is how it’s supposed to be. Alot of people don’t consider Wii U next gen but that isn’t changing the fact that it is the Wii’s successor.
By these peoples logic the Ps2 was 5th generation and the Wii was 6th generation.
That makes no fucking sense whatsoever seeing as the ps2 beat out the dreamcast power wise.
i don’t see much innovation in the Wii U to justify it being apart of the next generation. The Gamepad has huge flaws and it’s just filled with gimicks like off TV play which quite frankly nobody uses as its highly situational and why would you want to play it on a gamepad over TV otherwise. Not to mention that the Gamepad is extremely clunky and hideous to hold. The whole innovation of the Wii U is meant to revolve around this monstrosity and i see loads of people saying how they prefer to use their Pro Controllers for as many Wii U games possible. The Gamepad is NOT selling the Wii U. it’s a failure.
#WiidiscontinU.
anyone who posts ‘that image’ gets banned by the way :P
Imma do it!
I dare you!
Godammit Sickr blocked the link.
LOL wat
I’m not joking! Every time I try to post the comment, it won’t post.
I give up…it won’t work…
What image?
“Bitches love cannons!!!”
Lol?
That’s right!!
It’s a funny quote I heard. Don’t think I’m actually being serious lol
The Wii U offers more innovation than Sony’s Dualshock controllers and Microsofts Kinect (that’s actually arguable). And about the Pro controllers, that’s because Nintendo is being lazy and are not doing anything spectacular with the GamePad. It had so much momentum. But it’s not a failure, it’s doing fairly when up against the competition.
That was an awful defence
That’s because it wasn’t a defense.
I guess all that is just personal opinions, I in no way find it clunky or hideous to hold. You don’t see much innovation cause no one has made something to use it properly
Give it time and if its best used for inventory then fine, same can be said for the ds line
Next generation doesn’t mean power or innovation, is just the group of the 3 consoles that compete against each other at the same time. Pokemon generation VI is that 6th game in the series that came out, this next console gaming generation is the same thing, is not a bout power nor innovation, that’s not what generation really means, it’s about the group of console released during X period where they compete against each other, that’s it, whether it’s super technological or a piece of shit. GameCube, PS2, and Xbox were one generation, Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 were another one, and like it or not, WiiU, PS4 and Xbox One are another, released about the same time and competing against each other, doesn’t matter which one is good or not.
I don’t know why now it has to be 3243454564565665 times more powerful or it isn’t next gen, next gen is the next consoles that come out, whether they are powerful or not, now the PS4 is not next gen is current gen ’cause it already came out, but fanboys are misusing the term and using it as if it meant the next big thing when it means the generation that proceeds the current when in release. By your logic then only the GameCube was “next gen” when it was more powerful than the PS2. The Wii U is current gen now with Xbox One and PS4 ’cause they proceeded their older consoles and will now compete against each other in the coming year, doesn’t matter which one is more powerful, that’s irrelevant, next gen means the next consoles, not the best technology coming next.
Next-Gen only means “innovation” when it fits your bias narrative.
Not only innovative. And i wouldn’t be biased if i own two of the three next gen systems and used all three of them.
2? I am counting zero next gen systems. All three of the 8th Generation systems are on the market already, so they aren’t Next Gen, they are CURRENT Gen. Besides, the Wii U is a member of the 8th Generation, just like the Xbox One and the PS4, so it is just as “next gen” as the others.
Well PS4/Xboxone are the only two consoles who are really claimed to be considered next generation by the majority. I deny Wii U being a next gen console because there’s really nothing next ‘gen’ about it. It’s just half way between the current gen and the next gen. Hell, even the ps4/xbox one don’t have much going for them compared to current gen.
…
6th Console Generation: Xbox, PS2, GameCube
7th Console Generation: Xbox 360, PS3, Wii
8th Console Generation: Xbox One, PS4, Wii U
Generations don’t have to do with specifications, it has to do with timeframe.
They mean Next generation like.
What does that even mean?
next-generation
adjective [before noun]
› used to describe a product that has been developed using the latest technology and will probably replace an existing product:
The PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One do not use the latest technology, if they did it would be much more expensive than that. That’s what the PC is for.
:)
So then how isn’t the Wii U “Next Gen”.
^ This. It has to do with timeframe, not power or innovation. Just like the Pokemon games, Gen !, Gen II, Gen III, etc… It’s all about the time they are released and the new version of each companies’ console.
It doesn´t matter what you think and what haters think. Wii U is 8th gen whether people like it or not, you have no choice but to accept it.
but its not though
It’s is, you’re just a troll. It’s at the same generation competing with others from the same generation. When in high school you say generation of 1998 because that was the year you finish high school, so the ones with better grades were the only ones from the generation of that year and the ones with least good grades weren’t? Even if all of them graduated in that year? Generation means a time frame, a time where something is released or a time where something happened. Just as you call Pokemon X and Y the VI generation, your high school group generation of 1998, for example, and the Wii U is current gen because is currently competing with the other consoles. And now all of them are current gen, not next gen anymore.
It is next gen because it’s the new Nintendo console, then the WIi wasn’t next gen too ’cause it wasn’t as powerful as the others? Yet still it won that gen? Wait, how it won that gen if it wasn’t from that gen for being underpowered? Next gen just means it’s the new group of consoles, not the next true most powerful ones. I don’t know why you think next gen means power and innovations, it just means the consoles proceeding the ones before them. The Wii U, PS4 and Xbox One were next gen, no matter how powerful each one is or innovative, but now they are released so they are not current gen, get over it!
Wait wat about Ouya? THAT MAKES 4!!!
Let’s continue our discussion here…The reply’s have capped out
Wii U will win just watch
Wii U will sink like the titanic
It will beat Xboner
About damn time I learned how to make a new profile XD
The Wii U will NOT sink like the Titanic. Not even the Gamecube sank, even though it didn’t sell as well as expected. But it was still an AWESOME console. And so is the Wii U.
I think the headline for this article should have read
“Wii U #1 selling next gen console in Japan during the final week of December 2013.”
Way too positive for this site
Which disappointed the most people world wide the week of Christmas as Nintendo’s servers are still powered by 10 Wii’s daisy chained together.
The most people to experience disappointment in Nintendo at the same time in 2013.
Well when you’re the only next gen console released in Japan …. that isn’t a hard feat to accomplish ….
I know, and mostly Im joking but I mean everytime you see a negative / bad news type story, especially in regards to Wii U sales they embelish the headline in the most extreme light possible (even on this site bizarrely…)
Can we not talk about Nintendo and Christmas ever again? We know it turns me into a Nintendo slashing werewolf.
hahah now wait for january. will drop to 2,500 a week lmao
Nanananananananana-NICE!
NANANANANANANANA-no.
Nanananananananana….yes?
I am still surprised Wii U is selling that well and Super Mario 3D World, if it changes in January then it does but if it continues I will be legit suprised

Nintendo dominates again!!! The Wii U might even end up selling massively at 1mil units sold worldwide this Dec. That’s nearly launch number like stats for the month!!! An incredible accomplishment for Nintendo!!!
“That’s nearly launch number like stats for the month”
No, it’s not really even close.
Really they look very identical to the Wii U launch numbers last December 2012 don’t they? At least in Japan they do!!!
oh I forgot maybe you are getting butt-hurt about the Wii U having a comeback!!! LOL…love seeing the butthurts and meltdowns of haters!!!
DAMN!!!! thats a lot of people who are going regret their purchase. figuring its just a 2006 old powered system with no games and a discontinue after nintendo releases there last game zelda u in 2015. then they are going to be pissed because nintendo forces gimmicks with that shitty gamepad (wii u pro is better, gamepad is about as innovative as a shit stuck in a toilet, and that explains nintendo as a whole) no 3rd party and same old shit games. WELCOME TO INNOVATION……. of the biggest scam since the jaguar!!!!!
Sony loves off 3rd party companies and takes credit for all they do without them dont is bankrupcy bound they have no memorable characters if their system wasnt meeting their projected sales figures they would say thank u far your money dumbasses but we will pull the plug no1 our 1st party games were never good enough to keep our system afloat. Nintendo wont ever be a 3rd party developer they are to skilled for fony and microsux.
Super Smash Bros. U. Bayonetta 2. Mario Kart 8. Fire Emblem vs. Shin Magami Tensi. X. Donkey Kong Returns Tropical Freeze.
Dat vaunted 2014 lineup. Ooooh Sony’s shitting there pants thinking about the WiiU. Gimme a break Only 3 of those games are confirmed for this year.
Didn’t the Wii get discontinued in Japan earlier this year?
According to Vgchartz.com, the Vita sold 79,000 and it as the Wii U that sold 75,000 so the Wii U is actually in third place and not second.
