Iwata Reiterates No Plans For Mario On Smartphones

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has told The Wall Street Journal that the company has no intention of making its key titles available on tablets and smartphones over fears it will damage the brand and also impact on Nintendo 3DS sales.

“The spread of smart devices does not spell the end of game consoles. It’s not that simple,” President Satoru Iwata said at a news conference Friday. The key is to figure out a way to use smartphones to make people aware of Nintendo’s games, and encourage them to try out the console version of the games, Mr. Iwata said.

“It doesn’t mean that we should put Mario on smartphones,” he said.

In the meantime, it is worth noting that Nintendo is beefing up its research and development budget, and that Mr. Iwata promises to surprise game players in the future. While there are plenty of unknowns, Nintendo isn’t saying game over to consoles just yet.

      1. You say that… But in all actuality its not true. If it ever comes to a day when Nintendo has literally failed in the console world, you will definitely see them developing games for Sony and Microsoft. They’re a gaming mastermind. Besides console sales, they would probably double their money doing it like that. Its not the end of the world guys. Nintendo really caused this on themselves.

          1. I can’t help but notice that none of you took heed of the pure hints he was dropping there!? Nintendo is working on a new console and it will be announced either next year or the next. Hell maybe if we’re lucky they’ll announce a sneak peek at this year’s e3. “Nintendo is beefing up their RnD” that part alone, tells you they’re actually spending money on an advanced console that won’t try to be “good enough”, but will directly compete with others like the past. Seems like Iwata is finally following Yamauchi’s footsteps and will revive the classic slogan that if you play with Nintendo you’re playing with power. I honestly don’t care if the Wii U has only had about 2 years, if failed already because of many things its better to move on and pick up the pace instead of beating a dead horse. I’ll gladly buy their next gen when it comes out, I’m sure with what they learned, it’ll be a completely different story.

        1. I dotn agree
althrough Mario games are “everywhere” they do deliver quality
also, the reason is the “New” serie. Count out the “New” series, and the most recent Mario game is Mario Galaxy 2(Mario 3D Land/World are pretty recent but im making another point)

      1. I can agree with you that Nintendo milks parts of the Mario series… But not all. The true 3D titles like Galaxy and SM3DW are great and amazing. New Super Mario Brothers… However…. I totally agree. Nintendo couldn’t understand why gamers were irritated with Wii U’s launch; Reggie even commented saying “they wanted Mario and we gave them Mario yet they still complain.” New Super Mario Brothers U was a safe cheap way out for Nintendo with Wii U’s launch. They should have launched Galaxy 3 as a sendoff to Wii and a new beginning with Wii U. The Galaxy series is way deeper and much more fun than the “same since the original DS version game we been playing for years” NSMBU. I hope we never see another entry to be honest, and Nintendo’s comment on the Wii U’s launch just shows how disconnected they have become with gamers.

    1. I dont take anything seriously from some creep who likes hentai stuff. Hows the anime girls? Awwww did they look you in the eye, did you get from them? LMAO!!!

      1. Please stop trying to overthrow the mighty pinwheel. You are a worthless sack of shit, please sit the fuck down kid.

          1. Even though i use these avatars for satirical purposes lol. This avatar is an example of the pathetic boxart your 3 DS games have

            1. No, it got your attention and you wanted to use it because it reminds you how pathetic YOU are. Im sure you have that game pre ordered btw. Have fun those will be your only naked “boobs” you will see in 3D.

              1. Yeah definitely going to order a game on a system i do not currently own. Smart move. Seriously, the only way you can ‘expose’ people is to make up lies? God will smite you down. Also take a look in the mirror blind fanboy (oxymoron) you’re the pathetic one.

  1. Why should they even bother in the first place? You’d never see MS or Sony putting their stuff onto mobile devices. Why should Nintendo??

People just hate Nintendo for no reason.

      1. it seems all your posts must be taken backwards
“Because nintendo has a good portable device to put games on … Oh…. This news is smart”

      2. Uh I think you’re forgetting that 3DS is the fastest selling console. When the big guns are out for Nintendo, then Wii U will be selling the fastest.

Right now they’re just in a sticky situation.

I would actually want this. Smart phones brought together MP3 players and cell phones, but I still have my gaming handheld to carry around. If Nintendo made a smartphone I would truly have an all-in-one machine.

The only problem with this is Nintendo can’t even make a proper home console and they’ve been doing this for decades. I highly doubt they could succeed entering the market and making smartphones.

I’m pretty sure you were just kidding but it’s not completely out of the question.

    1. Same! Nintendo games are BEST on a Nintendo platform. Mario on PS4 or God forbid… Mario on Xbox *gag* would be awful…. just awful. It would feel wrong, they’d probably be forced to tack on tacky multiplayer and we’d have to listen to swearing little shits while we play the tacky online multiplayer.

Nintendo simply cannot abandon the home console marketplace.

  2. Nintendo never fails to surprise they have proven that b4 I wont give up on em and millions wont. besides real gamers don’t consider tablet and smartphone game players gamers at all they are mearly cheap wannabes. only no talent hacks and companies that know they cant keep pace will develop for those devices a good point is SEGA lol besides ive played games on those b4 and holy framerate lag and piss poor quality but I guess u get what u pay for. if I must pay 60$ for a real game then I don’t mind as long as the quality is there :) then u see morons reviewing android and ios games they pay a whole 1.99 for and saying it should be better. real games cost money to make SO GET OVER IT!!!!!

  3. Mario isnt some lame big mascot wannabe who needs to have games on ios+3consoles+2handhelds in order to sell 2 million, like some other mascot.

  4. they need to make mario retire for a couple of years. that way when he is introduced back motherfuckers will rejoice. he’s played out. for crying out loud they’re making him wear cat suits now. what the fuck is next.

    1. nintendo should focus on franchises that have have made little appearances like f-zero for once, earthbound (do a 3d remake of every mother game into a compilation and released worldwide), start bringing gba to 3ds vc, gcn to wii u vc, a few remakes of certain games that actually need a remake like metroid II

    2. Nah they can keep making mario since that sells as long as they make other franchises and btw if your making fun of 3d world just stop cuz is the best mario to date

  5. Nintendo’s next handheld console should be ‘Tablet Like’ but more suitable for gaming (Maybe with buttons somehow) and it should feature an ‘app’ type of store similar to apple, they can release their huge library of games on it and it could highly appeal to 3rd party app games developers. I will definitely not be surprised if this actually happens and it would probably the smartest move they make, that way they’d still be in the hardware and software business and it will be keeping up with the times.

  6. After all that nonsense I have read lately… Well that is your answer: no smartphones and no other platforms but Nintendo consoles. Now you can start looking for another subject if you want to continue trolling Nintendo cause this one is just a closed case.

  7. Strong words from Mr Iwata. I think he needed this kick up the backside. Time to revert to the Nintendo of 2005.

  8. And so Iwata shouldn’t. The Wii U is still in its infancy, much like the 3DS is. There’s still plenty of time left in both systems. All Nintendo need to do is revamp their current business practice rather than reinvent the wheel, but do so where Nintendo as a company is still unique, fresh, and exciting. They have the potential, the whys and the wherefores, but they need to be savvy on how they further market and pitch their direction going forward.

  9. “Wii U sells are bad, how can we help Nintendo sell more Wii U units?… I know, let’s tell Nintendo to release their games on mobile devices”

    GENIUS!!

Seriously, these Pachter-wannabe analysts should shut up and fuck off.

  10. I don’t see what the big problem with this is. Having Nintendo on smartphones can make Nintendo some money, but mostly just help their PR. It’s not as if they’re putting it on another console. I think that adding the games onto the smartphone can help to bring in more people who wouldn’t play Nintendo games otherwise. Either way, it should be okay

    1. Personally, I don’t think Nintendo is comfortable putting games on consoles or anything else that they don’t make. In their mind, Mario and all the rest are best suited for systems they knew well, in other words their own consoles.

Besides, I actually agree with Iwata that games on smartphones might deter people away from 3DS. The 3DS is Nintendo’s biggest card right now.

      1. Not to mention that it can ruin their business as a console maker. If they put it on smartphones, iOS or anything not in their main reach (such as like making games for their own systems), it will turn out like sega did…down the drain aka 3rd party developer and I SURE IN HELL…don’t want to see Mario on a PS4 or an Xbox One. You may not see a big deal but I do. Iwata sees it too, why you think he said “no” in the first place?

    2. Agreed. I would love to have Super Mario 3 and a Link Between Worlds in my phone. Imagine Pokemon red and blue on our androids and having the ability to trade classic pokemon again with other phones.
I’m not saying realease every game on tablets, just older ones. Other companies have done it, hell I play Sonic CD on my phone in between breaks at work. They’d rake in a ton of cash. And it could only help them after the brand awareness confusion the wii u caused. I’m possitive nintendo will bounce back but at least the option of opening the smart phone market makes sense since more people have a smart phone than a 3DS but im sure iwata won’t allow it. Og well.

      1. not even nintendo’s retro games should be even near smart devices, sure there are emulators but that is different so keep dreaming…..oh wait, not even in your dreams or daydreams or dreams within dreams

  11. The only thing Nintendo did wrong is make the Wii U underpowered and not support Wii U with enough games. Put controller pro and Wiimote and Nunchuck in with Gamepad and spend money to make more games for Wii U.

  12. Why would Nintendo fail when they have a large fan base and amazing franchises?

It’s only the Xbots and Sonyans combined that want Mario in their consoles so they complain about all that shit!

I don’t understand why they to ask Microsoft to put Halo in smartphones and quit making consoles, or how about the PS4? Why no one told Sony to go to smartphones and put The Last Of Us there
    and quit making consoles too?

    1. Clearly Nintendo doesn’t have THAT large of a fanbase anymore if the fans aren’t buying their home gaming console.

And no one is asking Microsoft or Sony to put their game on mobile devices because they don’t need to. Both of their consoles are selling well above the Wii U.

I also think it’s interesting to note that Sony IS actually trying to put their games on smartphones with their recently announced Playstation Now which will allow any game to stream on any device. This means eventually we can play The Last of Us on our smart phones. I wonder if Nintendo will go the same route or if they have something complete different planned. Either way it’s good to see a company trying to use tablets and smartphones in an interesting way.

  13. same old people saying Nintendo games are washed up but the moan they won’t put them on other non Nintendo devises. these people are wind me up. first party titles are called that for a reason, also pacter should stop making sweeping statement as he said Nintendo should this time round. such a old thing know

  14. I would like to see the next Nintendo home system to keep the gamepad, but make players put the disc in the gamepad. That way, gamers can play the games on their gamepad’s and move around, maybe even take it to a friends house or even oversea’s.

  15. Nintendo’s fans would simply stop buying their games. Fuck smart phones for gaming. They’re only good for phone calls emails and websurfing.

  16. Don’t do it nintendo. Just release a innovative high end hardware machine with excellent online services and you’ll do fine. Right now, I can’t stand your online services and your slow wii u processors, and it feels like i’m talking about the wii, but it’s actually the wii u that i’m talking about.
