Fewer UK Consumers Are Pre-ordering Video Games

With the amount of broken games being shipped it comes as no surprise to learn that fewer UK consumers are pre-ordering video games these days. The survey, which was conducted on behalf of MCV, shows that 20% of UK gamers say they’ve stopped pre-ordering video games altogether or are pre-ordering fewer titles. Interestingly 9% say they’ve cut back on pre-orders and 11% say they haven’t pre-ordered any games in the past. The UK remains the number one territory across Europe for pre-orders, but it’s also the place where the sharpest decline is happening.

  1. Because we’re smart. Knowing all the AAA with problems or bugs at launch, like AC: Unity or Watch_Dogs, it’s smart not to preorder..

    1. I have bought games other than Nintendo day one as well, ignoring reviews. I only pre order games online and it’s where I get Nintendo games.

    2. Hmmmm pretty glad I didn’t pre-order Codename STEAM cause after reading the reviews it seemed pretty terrible (although I guess that was Intelligent Systems…still: published by Nintendo).

        1. I played the demo and found it to be really annoying (you have to wait for enemies to move but the game won’t show you where they are???). Once I read the reviews I realized the whole game would be like that so I just gave up on the idea. I had really liked the premise of the story too but apparently the game doesn’t really expound on it at all?

      1. I doubt it’s as terrible as they make it seem. Play the demo and decide if the gameplay is your thing. Actually since we’re on this topic, I’ve actually play some games that I thought were absolutely awesome, only to find out that online reviewers say otherwise. Don’t forget that that is their opinion and not yours.

        1. I totally understand and I’m not saying that it’s impossible to enjoy the game if you like that kind of thing. This was more a case of me having some doubts about the game after playing the demo only to have all my doubts confirmed by reviewers. Had I disagreed with the reviewers I definitely would have kept playing. Just wasn’t for me.

Not to mention you’ll know if something is wrong with a Nintendo game before it even releases. For example, if the game doesn’t have a feature you feel would be integral to your enjoyment of the game, *cough*Splatoonlackingvoicechat*cough* you can just cancel your pre-order.

  2. Then again, gamers are quick to say they’re boycotting companies, not buying a certain games because of censorship, etc. I’m pretty sure the 20% doesn’t match up with actual pre-order sales figures.

    1. Yep, like boycotting Splatoon because of no voice chat but accepting pay to play online. Welcome to the gaming industry. It’s full of hypocritic stupid people. As of now I just ignore the PS and Xbox side. There’s too much stupidity to even game on those platforms. I at least respect PC gamers because most of them don’t take it up the a$$.

  3. Games don’t need to be preordered. It’s a silly concept anyway.

I never preorder games unless they are a special limited edition with an artbook and figurine!!!

    I’m from America, though.

    1. Pre-ordering is actuallu one of the best ways to support games you like. While you may not need to preorder many people do because it’s more convienient.

  4. It’s very rare that you can’t pick up a game at the store day one without pre ordering so I don’t see the point. Devs are the ones that whine about it.

  5. Good! Its a stupid practice really, there should never be a requirement to preorder in order to be guaranteed a copy of a new release game in a dedicated games shop. Unless its a small indie one, then that’s understandable.

  6. Yeah…don’t pre-order games. It’s the whole reason we have a network of journalists reviewing video games: to stop people from jumping into a purchase before the get to know what it is. The pre-ordering industry relies on a shitty part of consumerism that makes us want something early purely for the sake of getting it early (i.e. “before anyone else”).

  7. The UK gamers, finally doing something right after eons. We have missed you fellow video game players.

    F=ma.

  8. I only pre-order games I know will be hard to find. For example Story of Seasons only had like two extra copies at my GameStop, so I was glad I pre-ordered.

    1. Yeah I don’t know what the rag on preordering is about. Obviously don’t preorder from garbage devs but some games can only be preordered to get a physical copy of it.

  9. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Considering so many games releasing with glitches up the ass or missing features that some might find necessary or important during this generation of gaming, can you really blame people for finally smarting up & not pre-ordering games? I seriously would like to know how many pre-orders for Splatoon have been canceled because of the recent news.
