More details are emerging about what to expect within the gameplay of Splatoon, most recent of which is that it won’t feature custom match types, like Super Smash Bros, to have custom lobbies with friends. You also won’t be able to change user settings like look sensitivity during gameplay, only before and after a game, otherwise you’ll have to exit the game to tweak the settings and jump back in.
Also, the gear you acquire will be different between online and offline modes and aren’t transferable. Online you can buy gear from the shopkeepers, whereas offline you’ll have “Power Eggs” used to unlock gear– which means people who don’t play online are missing out on a huge chunk of stuff. It seems like a lot of stuff is cropping up about things you can’t do in Splatoon and people don’t seem to be happy about it. Is this game going downhill fast or will it still be super enjoyable regardless? I’m still looking forward to trying it out! You can check out the latest gameplay footage and the Battle Dojo mode here.
“There isn’t a gear or equipment link between single player and multiplayer. So, it’s not that you earn money in single player to then spend in multiplayer. Instead, the link is more focused on skill. You practice your controls and develop skills in single player and then you can take those with you into multiplayer.” — Hisashi Nogam

God dammit Nintendo… WHY are you doing this?!?! btw this was a great article! Nice job jackyanne
Yea, I’m liking jackyanne. I enjoy how they look at it from both sides.
Anyway, I’m sure the game will sill be enjoyable, but just not as enjoyable for some. I’d be one of those people. Still getting it regardless, but I won’t act like any of this isn’t getting to me.
I’m gonna go out and start applying for jobs this weekend so I can get a Wii U and get this game! I’m pretty much in the same boat as you regarding the game.
>No voice chat
>Physical DLC announced before the game even released
>Future DLC already announced
>No customizable multiplayer rules
What’s there not to love about this game?! /s
Splatoon= unfinished game
If it was unfinished then why are there so many game modes, customization options for the character and many weapons and stages that are in the game at launch? Sounds like a finished game to me.
I remember when people lost their shit because DLC for Evolve was announced before the game actually came out. But now, since it’s Nintendo doing it, it’s absolutely alright, of course, lmao.
it really depends on how they handle it, if its shit like evolve then yes its shit, but it something like MK8, and HW it will be good. time will tell
No. The whole thing concerning Evolve wasn’t about what the DLC actually contained, people were criticizing the fact that DLC was announced before the game came out. Nintendo is doing the same right now, but nobody seems to mind. Just like when people were critizing other developers for locking away DLC on the game CD, but now that Nintendo is doing the exact same thing, everyone acts like it’s absolutely okay. Them double-standards. :)
to my knowledge evolve’s dlc launch was way over 100$ all together and it was prelaunch. They said post launch meaning after game is sent out. I can understand amiibos, but if they are mostly fun costumes that don’t offer much different status from the game, then its not big fuss to me, but i understand how people feel.
Hm, well, the comments I had been reading were complaints about how it sucks that they’ve already announced DLC for a game that hasn’t even been launched.
And when looking at SSB and MP10, we’ll see that it’s sometimes more than just costumes, but actual game modes too. Admittedly, shitty game modes, but still game modes.
They mentioned post launch support for the game, and suddenly its the same as EA already having names for the DLC packs before the game launch.
Just need to get that Nintendo hate out there, huh?
Because making up names for DLC is such a time-consuming activity, and it’s absolutely unacceptable to do that before a game’s out, am I right? There is such a huge difference between announcing DLC with names and announcing DLC without names! /s
If people hate on others for announcing DLC before the game is out, they need to do the same thing with Nintendo, if they want to be taken seriously.
I personally never complained about DLC getting announced pre-launch, I honestly don’t see what’s supposed to be the big deal about that. I’m just calling out those hypocrites who suck up everything Nintendo does when they used to criticize other developers for doing the very same thing.
But thanks for your input.
Don’t know if you are familiar with recent Battlefield’s and their DLC’s.
They pretty much had to have some concept of the DLC’s, doubt they were just pulling random words out of the hat and building on that.
But I just don’t get it why people are jumping on the walls when they said “but we do have some plans to follow up with content to keep interest in the game post-launch”.
Now is that same to you, as announcing DLC’s with names and price tags?
And calling out hypocrites is just waste time.
I don’t really care about DLC one way or another, because I realize, that you don’t have to get it (unless its the other half of the game like recent EA games have been), but if I had to draw a line somewhere, Nintendo does not get even near the worst offenders who abuse the concept.
I actually am familiar with Battlefield’s DLCs, because I bought a couple of them for BF4, and the entire Premium Season Pass for BF3, haha.
And yea, just because some developers don’t give their DLCs names doesn’t mean they’re not well planned out in advance. I’m pretty sure even Nintendo already has their plans concerning upcoming DLC for Splatoon. Just because they don’t speak about those plans as openly as other developers choose to do, doesn’t mean the plans aren’t there.
And I’m guessing the whole name thing is just some kind of marketing strategy to make the whole thing a bit more attractive with “badass” names, I personally only saw that in shooter games. Just guessing though, of course.
Uncomparable. Evolve’s dlc was a tragedy. It was exactly what we don’t want to happen to our video games. Day one dlc, on disk dlc, worthless dlc, expensive dlc…. The poster child of bad dlc..
Splatoon devs simply said they want to continue to support the game post launch. They haven’t even started working on any dlc yet. How you compare that to Evolve is beyond me..
Mainly because Evolved locked you out of HALF OF THE GAME EXPERIENCE behind a pay wall… Splatoon just doesn’t have the features as of yet.
Half of the game experience? Tell me how because mostly all the DLCs are just skins for the monsters and Hunters.
But DLC wasn’t announced before this game was released, they announced they where going to work on future DLC for Splatoon, with Evolve, you could literally buy the DLC before the game was even released.
Go back to /v/
What’s so bad about the DLC stuff? It’s not like you have to get the DLC or have to get it before its not available.
Good luck then. I had got a job recently and well… It sucks. I hate working. But it’s worth it for the money.
What do you do at your job?
I help serve unhealthy meals at a fast food restaurant. Hahaha. But I don’t plan on doing it for the rest of my life. It’s just easy cash for now. Mainly for me to buy new games! Hehe…
LOL I plan on working at a retail but not sure how that’s gonna work out considering my brother (who btw turns 22 today!) works at Ross and HATES IT SO MUCH
Well, for me, getting a job at a fast food restaurant was the easiest choice because there are so many of them around here. I honestly thought it would’ve just been flipping patties and making fries and stuff but it’s way more complicated than that… It suuuuucks. But that paycheck… Ha! I’ll finally have a glorious gaming PC in no time.
https://theunsanity.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/gloriouspc.jpg
Does your school not have programs that helps you get summer jobs?
Aww man I feel bad for you. But knowing you’ll get the games you want makes it worth it.
Hey, at least you’re working. No shame in that. Gotta start somewhere and you gotta make $$.
I went to college off and on for years, finally finished my degree and have an awesome job, but you can bet your ass my first job sucked! ;D
lol im doin the same thing XD good luck.
Nice! Good luck to you to! :D
And btw yeah Jackyanne REALLY knows how to write articles! She’s great!
Hey, thank you so much guys! Glad you enjoy the articles, I really appreciate it :)
You are also really pretty! Jelouse lol! :)
No way will I pay $60 US dollars for it. Let us know how you like it!
perri onii tan
It surely isn’t helping the appeal of this game.
I honestly thought Nintendo wanted this game to succeed with all the marketing they’ve been doing and the bundle they made. But after this however, I’m not too sure…
Platoon 3-pack back in stock Walmart.com
Splatoon
Lol
Auto correct get on my nerves.
This isn’t a bad thing. Different equipment and stats for online vs. offline means that online modes will be limited and balanced, while offline modes will basically let you suit up with OP equipment. If everything was allowed online, it would be crazy and there would be no variety as everyone would just use the strongest stuff.
exactly

You don’t care about voice chat, but many others do care indeed. It’s all about giving people options, instead of entirely leaving a feature out.
And how is it obvious that you shouldn’t be allowed to change settings during a game? Pretty much every shooter allows you to do that. In Splatoon, you’ll have to play around the settings, enter a game to test out if they work for you, and if they don’t, you’ll have to leave the game, change the settings again and join a game AGAIN just to try them out AGAIN. Yea, sounds absolutely reasonable and convenient. /s
Why not just let people decide for themselves whether or not they want to take the risk of spending a couple of seconds to tweak their settings during a match? Again, options.
I really don’t agree with you, many of the decisions they’re making about this game don’t seem to make any sense at all.
He said it best.
This game is getting more and more disappointing.
Don’t care but I can see people having a problem with no custom matches with friends.
You can’t talk to or customize with friends. This is the absolute bare minimum of online play. I bet the game was designed to be offline, but they knew there was no way in fucking hell it would sell, so they slugged in online play grudgingly.
I’m afraid on what’s coming to Nintendo’s next console.
Games.
Aww maan…why is all this bad stuff about Splatoon suddenly appearring!?Anyways, I’m still excited and getting this game day one. I hope they add some of these features later on.
Seriously? No friend room? Really? How is that possible? That can’t be true. Tell me I’m reading this wrong. There HAS to be a way for me and 7 of my hypothetical friends who all own a Wii U and Splatoon to play online together in one lobby. Surely that has to be true.
You can create friend rooms, you just can’t “customize” them with your own rules. There will only be one set of rules allowed for the friend rooms… a.k.a one set of online gameplay you can play.
Wow, way to limit the potential. If you’re playing against friends, why shouldn’t you be allowed to increase the time limit or make other adjustments beforehand?
I’m really anticipating this game, but right now the bad aspects seem to be outweighing the good aspects…
The internet is really trying to get this game to fail… Sad, because this is the first big “NEW” IP that Nintendo has created in a long long time.
I’m getting it and have been since I heard about this game from the start. This news doesn’t irk me in any way. It makes sense to me.
Don’t care about voice chat, obviously you can’t change your settings during a game, because then you would be paused mid-battle and that shouldn’t happen. Just make sure the settings you like are set already. It also makes sense that offline and online equipment would be different, because offline modes usually allow you to have stronger stuff. Online, they want it to be more competitive with a different variety of clothing that is more balanced.
Instead of worrying about what you “CAN’T” do in this game. Focus on what you “CAN” do and how the decisions they are making for this game make sense!
The fanboy damage control is strong with this one
I love the weak defenses these people are coming up with. Internet ain’t ruining the game, Nintendo is and its fanboys are as usual allowing it.
You don’t care about voice chat, but many others do care indeed. It’s all about giving people options, instead of entirely leaving a feature out.

Exactly you said it perfectly.
Pre-freakin’-cisely! If games from 2008 could let you adjust control/sensitivity settings mid-game, why can’t a game from 2015 do it as well?
I am looking forward to this game a hell of a lot, but many of the decisions regarding it just BAFFLE me.
No Nintendo is making this game fail with the lack of basic features.
I like your reasoning pinkers.
One step forwards, two steps backwards… Such a shame, I really don’t want this game to fail. Better hope they will fix that in any upcoming DLC.
>>>Similar to Smash Brothers at least, still waiting for that Tournament Mode by the way…>>>
Aren’t we all.
I actually agree with comment 100%. Fingers crossed they patch and dlc the hell out of it! :D
That is a disappointment for people who wants to play closed friend sessions.
u can, they never said in the ign article that there are no private room
Hear we go the baby’s are going to cry about this now. Grow up people.
No the babies are gonna defend every dumb decision made by Nintendo. The intelligent people are just speaking their mind while the selfish people suck up whatever they get. Any intelligent person would be upset at lack of options that are industry standard. You don’t redefine a genre by taking out standard features. That’s just called being lazy.
“You don’t redefine a genre by taking out standard features. ” – you’re contradicting yourself.
How so? There’s nothing different about that. We’ve had plenty of shooters without voice chat. We’ve just gotten more technology so now we are capable of such features. Taking it away again isn’t genre redefining in any way. It’s just going backwards.
That’s to say shooters are defined by their voice-chat capacity…
I wonder if nintendo is pushing splatoon and not showing ANYtHINg about Devils third on purpose. That’s the wii u shooter I want.
That’s cause Devils 3rd sucks.
Same
Its like nintendo doesn’t want people to fucking buy this game. I’m buying it anyways though because my Wii u is fucking starving for some new games.
Yea but some people defend anything they do. Some people have valid reasons against voice chat but most are just selfish cause they don’t use it and so they don’t care and have no other GOOD reason. For this though nobody should be happy. Flame on fanboys/girls. You all complained about what was is, splinter cell? The game that had like no online multiplayer or offline or something like that? Whatever it was, it was an “industry standard” option that the u version didn’t get. But now we don’t get the industry standard voice chat and such, and we the true fans are just called babies. Voicing your opinion for something is being a baby, but being happy others didn’t get what they want but you did makes you a mature adult? Please kids.
to be more clear its mostly communication more then voice chat itself. I just don’t care for the wiiu’s voice chat features, since mic quality is bad.
I can’t argue that it’s not the best for sure, but I think it should be utilized either way for people who don’t have or want Skype or other services. I remember monster hunter having decent voice chat but I haven’t played since like day one lol. Too many other games came out and I just never got back. I’ve had decent chat in the kart and smash lobbies with my friends too. I think it depends on where your gamepad is and if you have he volume on the gamepad turned off or on.
The thing with Skype, or voice chat through other devices in general, is that you’ll need extra equipment for a feature that could easily be part of the game itself.
If you decide to use Skype, you’ll need an audio switch to actually hear both your friends’ voices and the audio of the game at the same time. You’ll also need to have the people you’re playing with added on Skype, which might not always be the case with every single person you have on your WiiU buddy list. Not to forget that you’ll need your PC sitting next to your WiiU so you can even use Skype in the first place.
It’s simply a poor alternative to a feature that should be taken for granted in games like this in this day and age. If they truly refuse to add it into games individually, just give us an application on the WiiU similar to Party Chat on Playstation, so we can at least talk to anyone in our buddy lists whenever we want, while playing any game we want. People won’t have much reason to complain then.
I’m seriously just tired of Nintendo feeling the need to parent us all the time, treating us like babies who can’t take care of themselves when being confronted with “unpleasant” situations, such as kids cursing at us during games. I’m mentally strong enough to not feel deeply hurt when a 12 year old curses at me during a match, I can take care of myself, promise.
Skype sounds like a whole lot of work I wouldn’t wanna deal with if I had a much more convenient alternative. Yea I’ve said the same thing on numerous articles on this topic about them needing to chill with babying us. Honestly I feel like it’s every 3 days I’m having this same argument about voice chat in this game it’s getting old lol.
I 100% agree with you. Its so agreeable that I can’t comment about anything. You need a trophy.
Haha I’m earning them in Mario Kart :p
Lol. I haven’t bought that pack yet. I have to load my fucking card with money. It’s a really annoying process.
You’re defending what you think should define this game: a generic shooter… you treat it like any other shooter game. It really isn’t though…
There isn’t anything standard about this game. It’s a new experience…
Here is quote from ign
“The last thing that stood out to us was user customization. Splatoon doesn’t offer custom match types with friends like Smash Bros. Specific user settings for look sensitivity controls can only be adjusted before (or after) a match. So if you’ve set one too high (or too low) you’ll have to jump out in order to make adjustments. It feels slightly backwards for an action shooter released in 2015.These still feel like small issues for a game capable of much grander ambition. Splatoon is fun to play. And it’s rewarding. Whether splattering foes with a roller brush or using it to claim a swath of territory, both actions come bundled with a thorough feeling of accomplishment. This inky new game could be a big win for Wii U, and one that makes the typically harsh world of shooting games approachable” – IGN
There are private lobbies, the wording he used, was confusing he was mostly talking controls don’t read the Gamnesia article. Anyone who knows ign would know that if splatoon didn’t have them would be a click title
Where has simply g been on these voice chat articles I’d love to see his unbiased opinion. He usually keeps it real.
Do you play online on the ps4 or xbox one. I want to know if you’re fos or not.
What is fos?
Full of shit?
Yep.
Correct
What would me playing on them or not have to do with my statement lol. I don’t own either but my roomate has a ps4. I have a ps3.
As i’ve said from the beginning I think Splatoon 2 is the game I really want. This one seems like it’s laying the foundation of awesome but just based on how Nintendo has been handling online interactions, etc. with their other games I knew this one would have plenty of little oversights and things intentionally left out (like voice chat) based on their current ideology or whatever but I hope that the response from everyone about things like this is enough so that if they do make a sequel it’ll be closer to want I want from this type of game. I still want to buy this because it could be fun, but custom lobbies and sensitivity adjustment during a game are big deals.
Most FPS or 3rd person shooter fans want to play random custom games with their friends/make up their own little game-types and even if you don’t care about customs you probably want to adjust your sensitivity then unpause the game to see how it feels, then tweak it again as needed. Having to go the whole game with a bad setting before being able to change it again will suck. Even if you can change it during single-player play to learn what works for you it’s not the same. You may find one multiplayer map is a bit better for you with a slightly higher or lower sensitivity and not being able to adjust on the go is just a bad move. It’s a shame but not a surprise unfortunately because I love Nintendo but usually when they get something right like this game and how it’s pushing online play, there seems to be a catch where traces of outdated logic, tech or over-protection can be found. I just want them to find that happy medium between the awesome they currently provide by doing their own thing and what has become the standards of online/console gaming today.
If the game is fun and not some boring shooter then who cares. It’s all about the fun factor people.
But having OPTIONS is a huge sell point for this kind of game.
Shame on you, Nintendo. Your novice development team is trying too hard :/
Even Kid Icarus allows to create custom matches and has transferable gear. Please, give Splatton to Sakurai xD
He’ll fill it up with Kid Icarus content and make a useless 3DS version.
see. bullshit. :’D
Your life is bullshit and you don’t need to expose it.
It seems this is not a day one buy anymore. No custom matches, though I don’t care as much because I have one friend with a wii u and he doesn’t see the appeal in splatoon. The voice chat is a nuisance that it isn’t in, once again. How am I supposed to add friends to my wii u to party up if I can’t befriend randoms? And lastly, the already announced dlc.
Honestly, none of this is relevant to me. Nor is voice chat. The entire game hinges on gameplay for me, and we’ll just have to see if that works out well or not.
AMEN!
Damn right
The stuff that the Splatoon game designers are making bad decisions on like game chat and private lobbies, I really don’t care about
Firstly, it is obvious that people in this thread are set in their opinions about this game, without looking at ALL the pros and ALL the cons… OR maybe try the game? Maybe?
I personally think voice-chat COULD be fun with the game, but it isn’t needed. It may be frustrating to not customize some aspects of the multiplayer, but there are many different modes to be had in play… Are we forgetting that? Gameplay is what makes the game, though, not voicechat and customization.
More than anything I think that people are analyzing this game like it should be like all other shooters, which it isn’t.
Splatoon is a hybrid of Mario Sunshine, platformers, Jet Set Radio, and territory-based games like Rise of Nations or other games.
Lack of voice-chat and customization may be a draw-back in some aspects IF looking at this game as a pure shooter, and in that case it is lacking a lot of other things that shooters have and people won’t like this game. The choices they’ve made for this game may actually better add to the feel of chaos that this game is designed to be. Remembering all that comes along with this game and the uniqueness of it, it shouldn’t be compared to other “shooters.”
Holy Fuck, you’re right! Why is everyone complaining?! Oh that’s right… because you all complain no matter what you get…
Couldn’t really hear you, Nintendo needs to add voice chat before I can hear you
Yup. I’m skipping this chat-less shit.
WTF is wrong with you. just because of no voice chat?
Yeah. I’m gonna skip it too. Nintendo really messed it up! Oh wait… I don’t own a Wii U anymore so I can’t play it anyway. Lol.
Dude…. -_-
What? It’s the truth. Lol. In all seriousness though, this used to be a day one purchase for me. Then after the no voice chat thing I kind of lost interest. Would’ve been great playing it and speaking to some of my friends! Oh well…
Now no custom matches? HTF are you gonna excuse that and what’s next? No Last Man Stand or even that lame ass “pretext” chat Nintendo keeps whoring out?
You idiot there’s nothing wrong with no customizable matches… You couldn’t do that in other shooters anyway. Or at least most of them.
Call of Duty, Counter Strike, BF, even Battlefront (not the new one EA fucked up). All of those don’t have custom matches? What gives Splatoon a pass on cutting standard features?
There sure are a lot of people who like stuff in games that I don’t care anything about. I suppose it’s because I HATE multi-player games (with the exception of Mario Party). I laugh at posts like this, because I know there’s gonna be a lot of people moaning and groaning. LOL!
It is interesting to say the least. I just find it depressing how it’s a “You must agree or you’re apart of the problem!” BS that’s running around. Guys saying problem with Nintendo fans is they fall in lock step with Nintendo, then say you can only be a real fan if you fall in lock step with their ideology.
This game was a day one purchase for me..
I might wait for a few reviews to come out first now…
Nintendo really hates giving the player options in their games.
This game is not like it seemed to be at first. I’ll still get it but not day one anymore.
As much as I like local multiplayer and sitting in one room while battling each other. I don’t really mind that system. There’s always skype where you can call all of your party members in a battle. Though I must say, the offline and online thing is making me a bit skeptical. Basing on the fact that it will be annoying of not getting a supposed item that you played gods know how many hours for it.
Was kinda interested in this game, but now it looks like a 7.2/10 game, yikes!
Thanks for informing me. Now I’m definite to know that Nintendo, once again, FUCKED THIS GAME and I’m skipping it.
…I don’t like where this is going.
I’m still getting this game Day 1, but now it’s looking like the negative aspects are more plentiful than and outweigh the good aspects.
That’s NEVER a good build-up to a game, even worse for a new IP like this.
Pingback: Splatoon will not have customizable options or rules in multiplayer
Sucks…Nintendo is going to be destroyed with the NX.
the game is a turd… deal with it
Your existence is a turd.
genuinely curious: what sort of customized options are people looking for in this game? like, what sort of game-rules settings do people want, and feel cheated by not having? this isn’t a shooter like halo, where you can have rocket arena and sword maps and whatever – the game wouldn’t even work if you limited the game to only one weapon.
what are people even looking for in terms of custom settings, outside sensitivity options (which, honestly, should be customizable during a match – there must be some technical hangup preventing it from being feasible or it would be).
The kind of customized options I, and probably many others are looking for, are match time limits (increase/decrease match time), maybe a lives counter (match ends immediately if all team members run out of lives), those sorts of things.
And I doubt there are technical limitations preventing sensitivity adjustment during matches. Games have been able to do that since at least 2007 (TF2 and Left 4 Dead immediately come to mind).
the only thing i could think of would be that your game settings and other such must be sent to the server at time of game launch and that it’s part of the system they use to keep people from hacking or otherwise fiddling with the game on their end for advantage.
i suppose time options would be nice, but lives don’t make sense because the game is decided by paint coverage, not death counts. trying to turn this game into a deathmatch would probably not be that fun to play, frankly – even though blasting people is enjoyable, the game’s been built from the start to be about painting the map, and i don’t think they physics of fired paint would make for an enjoyable kill-based fps experience.
Ummm… you don’t need to customize anything other than time maybe!
Your charter gets to customize itself through all its gear (head, shirt, pants, and shoes) all which can give you different attributes. You also get to pick t he weapon you’re coming in with.
Add the multiple game types that we know about, and this game doesn’t need all this stuff that you whiners want, just because every other generic shooter game you ever played. It’s not really a shooter… Just look at it.
Sensitivity would probably have been established after playing the game for a while, so why would you need to change it other than switch players maybe?
… I have a love-hate relationship with Nintendo now. Mario Kart 8 DLC was just released with a free 200cc mode which drastically changes the way you drive along with the Animal Crossing pack including in the bundle or a seperate purchase for $8 which is good buck for your money. Now everything circling around Splatoon just seems to be… the opposite. Who is developing this game again? They sure hate giving players options.
Oh, and that 200cc mode is free though I bet you active users already knew that.
In somewhat-related news, still waiting on either The Conduit 3 or The Conduit HD Collection. So much more DHV could do with the game now.
If Nintendo is always “getting away with it” whenever they make stupid decisions, then how come every time Nintendo makes stupid decisions there are walls and walls of angry text on the Internet about it? Not here to defend Nintendo, it would certainly be better if you could customize matches with friends in Splatoon, just pointing how absurd the notion that Nintendo get’s special treatment is. Nintendo gets PLENTY of hate. If anything the Wii U is severely underrated. You know, the console that flopped, because Nintendo “always gets a free pass”.
When people say that, I’m pretty sure they’re talking about Nintendo fans.
If I’m not mistaken, Splatoon is starting to show it’s “indie-ness.” A well funded indie game but indie none the less.
