Iwata Talks Briefly About The New Nintendo Membership Service

In the most recent investors meeting, Satoru Iwata briefly mentions the new Nintendo Membership Service, in partnership with mobile gaming company DeNA, to replace the phased out Club Nintendo. He doesn’t tell us much about the mysterious new project, but he does tell us that users will have one common ID they can use to access several devices. This is due to the incorporation of mobile phones and being able to access your account on them, as Iwata explains they plan to release 5 mobile phone titles by the end of the next fiscal year. He goes on to say that these new services include ones “based on their past purchases and gameplay records” which could suggest an Achievement system. How do you feel about Nintendo expanding to mobile devices? You can read part of his presentation here:

While we will announce the details of this integrated membership service at a later date, I can share with you at a high level the idea is that the consumer can access multiple devices using one common ID.
For us to be able to bridge the gap between smart devices and dedicated game systems, we will offer advantages to consumers who use one ID across multiple devices.
So far, the members input their Club Nintendo ID to use the services. With this new service, our members will be able to visit Nintendo’s website and log in with one ID, and they will receive various services including the ones based on their past purchases and gameplay records as well as services that will be an improved version of the current loyalty program.
With this new membership, we are planning to deploy services that will make playing Nintendo games with their game pals more fun regardless of which platform they are accessing.

  1. It sounds like the same service that Sony and Microsoft are currently doing now on the Xbox One and PS4… I’m alright with this. Good move Nintendo.

    1. If it offers a lot more for its service than just online play that’s free on PC and it’s half of what PSN charges or $30 a year, then maybe I might bite. But I’m still not pay in a dime for something that’s suppose to be free since we’re already paying for Internet access at home and work anyway.

  2. Xb and ps achievements and trophies make you think you are done with a shitty game and thats it.

    1. Or they give you a reason to revisit old games or extend the shelf life of a game you might otherwise put away and forget about.

      1. I love achievements, 1) its optional, don’t like it don’t do it, 2) it adds challenge and replay value to games you have beaten, 3) gives players a real reason to buy retro games they already have beats several times, 4) it well go great with miivers, and its fun to compare scores with friends.

Also it looks like this well keep track of your bought games allowing better support for cross perches

      2. Do you know how simple those “achievements” are or how pointless they are too? Who even gives a fuck about it anymore? Just enjoy what you have and even if you wasted more time replaying the same game for easy ass goals, then what? It’ll yield the same results with or without achievements.

          >>>Then they call us “basementdwellers” when they care about the most pointless crap ever>>>

              1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

If it’s anything like in Smash Bros 4 Wii U/3DS, keep it the fuck away from games I actually like to 100% complete.

    2. Or they give you a reason to revisit older games or extend the play life of a game you might otherwise put away and forget about.

    1. Except the fact that you have to pay a fucking fee to play games online, Narutard. Quit failing for once and get a life… and have sex with Sasuke.

        1. ^This. I can’t say I won’t chuckle a little if they go the PSN and Xbox Live route, I can only imagine the types of excuses so many will make here in defense of Nintendo’s service.

I know some will stick to their guns about the issue, but I know many are just going flip their delusional switch when if that does happen. Brand whores, gotta love ’em (not really.)

            >>>One thing is certain, no way I’m paying for online multiplayer even if it’s Nintendo>>>

            >>>And if by any means High Command actually implements this system in the near future, it will prove forever who the bigger fanboys are than me by just watching them pay to play online, I’m just too good to be true>>>

      1. At least you get what you pay for. I haven’t tried PSN but Steam was very unstable in my experience and Nintendo Network is okay depending what game I’m playing.
I have a high powered gaming rig but I’m saving for an Xbox One because I’ve had it with Steam

  3. Xbl has been going downhill since the 360 came out they haven’t added anything good for like 5yrs xbox is trash now.

  4. Just put the whole virtual console library on a subscription based service added to your account and playable across compatible devices including smartphones and I’ll be happy.

    1. I like that idea as long as the current option of buying individual games permanently is still an option. Playable across multiple devices is a lot easier said than done though and would likely be limited to NES, SNES GB/C/A

Agreed. No longer will I have to suffer what I did with the fucking Wii back in the day when they cease to exist! I had to start all over with Endless Ocean 2 TWICE when 2 of my old Wii consoles broke! Even now, I’m still terrified of my Wii U doing the same to me if it ever suffers a very nasty bump or it gets short circuited to hell & back, like my 2 dead Wii consoles. Same with my n3DS. I had a close call with my original 3DS a while back while charging it when the wife, girlfriend at the time, knocked alcohol on it & we didn’t find out til after the damage had been done.

  5. It seems I’m the only one who thinks this is a terrible idea.

While I admire Nintendo’s spirit the time spent on mobile games will take away from already scarce time spent developing their consoles and games.

  6. That’s smart if this works as an achievement system. Nice to see Nintendo trying to modernize themselves

  7. Nintendo has everything to win if they just adapt and use their IP’s in more modern and creative ways. THUMBS UP!!!

    1. There “more modern and creative ways” you speak of are exactly why the gaming industry has been rubbish for the last 5 years. Just gimme good games like N64 and GC had with online multiplayer and consider me happy.

  8. If this “Achievement system” is anything like the stupid trophies in Playstation games, we don’t need them. Those are SO pointless!

    1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

If they resulted in unlocked outfits or something, they wouldn’t be so bad. Ubisoft’s UPlay is a perfect example of an achievement system done right.
