This E3 clearly wasn’t the best from a Nintendo fan’s point of view. We’ve seen that a number of the games that were announced during the Nintendo E3 Digital Event received more dislikes than likes on popular video streaming service YouTube. There’s also been a petition floating around asking Nintendo to cancel Metroid Prime: Federation Force as fans feel it’s a disgrace to the Metroid Prime name. Bloomberg, a very popular and influential news site, has also published an article titled Nintendo’s Dull E3 Showcase Sparks Backlash From Fans. Here’s some extracts from the hard-hitting article. “A common strategy among video game companies is to spend a lot of energy coming up with an impressive trailer for a game that is early in development, then show it at an industry conference even if it won’t be ready for years. It may be a bit misleading, but it gets the crowd pumped up.”

That bothers me, too, but none more so than the Wii U to 3DS porting, & DS/GBA to Wii U eShop ports (waste of resources imo, especially when VC needs more home-console classics & from the GCN & Dreamcast libraries).
In the past, Nintendo & 3rd parties would release a multiplat on home & handhelds, but the handheld would get a different version, even in a different genre (New SMB DS differed from New SMB Wii, 3D Land differed from 3D World, PoP was 3D on home-consoles but 2D on handheld, even a Strategy RPG, etc.). They spread the franchise around, but gave both the console & the handheld relevancy. I often thought it would be neat if, say, Virtua Fighter Kids was strictly handheld while Virtua Fighter proper was strictly home console. But when the chips are down for Wii U, when exclusives or any quality game are most important, what does Nintendo do? Smash & Hyrule Warriors on 3DS should have been changed dramatically from their console counterparts, or never existed in handheld form. & dare I say? Xenoblade Chronicles should’ve stayed on Wii, but Nintendo also should’ve given it & other Wii games (1st & 3rd party) new releases in new ‘Also Playable on Wii U’ packages w/ a discount, especially during droughts. Wii certainly has a huge library where I doubt everyone found all they wanted, & many trade in their last console. I fear, much like w/ PSP & Vita, the handheld’s power (& of course its popularity) was too tempting. I thought Hyrule Warriors & its DLC were successes. Sure seems like Nintendo &/or Koei Tecmo are eager for a quick cash-grab.
Anyway, handhelds to me are for exclusives (just like home consoles), which could include a multiplat reimagined, & nostalgia/missed games from several gens ago, maybe even inexpensive but solid remakes. Oh, & *waves hand dismissively* portability, or some such feature.

It sucks cause I like the amiibo, but not before games. We like amiibo cause they represent the characters we play with, not the other way around. If amiibo is taking up all their time from making games (which it shouldn’t honestly, I doubt they themselves are even making them) then put them on hold or just stop them altogether and get us actual games! Yea it’s pretty damn ridiculous that a year later they can’t keep up on stock. I unfortunately am only 4 away from having all the smash series so it’s gonna be hard to not complete the series. If I do or don’t finish the series, I know I’m done with them after the smash series besides the chibi robo one since it comes with the game anyway. No animal crossing, no zelda line, no metroid line, I don’t care. I kind of regret coming as far as I have now after their presentation.

They got the fanbase excited they satiated that excitement asap with games they wanted. Part of new games being announced is the hype and excitement you get from waiting for them. If you don’t have that then well fans aren’t going to be as happy or stoke for the games they knew about. The games they showed off, none of them had any hype around them. Most of the games we knew about the hype had worn off and they did nothing to build the excitement up. The new games looked okay but again there was no hype or excitement buildup and that’s the major problem.

Yea I’m fucking pissed. It started off with the Nintendo charm and the puppet show, and I was loving it, and they started off with Star Fox. And just went straight downhill from there. The fucking puppet show was the best part of their E3.
Well after how awesome both the Smash direct and Nintendo World Championships were, I was expecting something huge here at the digital event. To me it seemed as though most games were spinoffs like that metroid one…..that metroid game seemed like a bad idea from the start.
Of course it was terrible too much time on the amiibos, Yoshi’s Woolly World, and Mario Maker. I haven’t seen their E3 this bad since 2008 and 2009.

Not only the backlash was beyond the peaked levels of harsh, but fans like myself are now leaving Nintendo permanently as they felt betrayed with their abysmal presentation and revelation that they also abandoned Wii U ultimately making the console pointless and worthless in every way even from the start which is exactly what Sega did in their past and ruined their console business. As for Metroid, the fans are even more outraged than what Other M did to the storyline and Samus character. Now it seems the NX is now in the red with so many pissed off fans disbanding Nintendo, maybe forever, after this hilariously saddening display of ignorance in their presentation this year.

I think that Nintendo’s Treehouse Event, where they show off their games, should be their E3 presentation. That way, they have 3 Days to show off as many games as they want to. They can show a trailer for the game and then spend some time showing the game off. I think that that would be awesome. Right?

i think everybody is overreacting. yes the presentation did leave something to be desired but nintendo has been decentralizing its information dissemination over the past few years. How many directs did we have last year? with new, previously unheard of games in them? Everybody just needs to calm the hell down and relax. They’re just video games after all not a cure for cancer.
Just because fans bought those amiibo figures, Nintendo thinks that’s all they want? No! Nintendo made those things rare, which sparked a buying frenzy, which they thought was success. I know Nintendo started as a toy company, but this us beyond ridiculous. I only own one amiibo figure (Villager) and I barely even use it! It’s just sitting there collecting dust. My boyfriend wants to collect all of the Smash amiibo figures, and I’m sick of it. I’m the one who has to go out and buy these little pieces of wasted space from Nintendo World, and there are not even being used!! FML! Nintendo needs to get their damn head in the game and make online play available! Their consumer base isn’t just children!!

Nintendo’s main E3 highlight for me was Star Fox 0. It’s fine, but nothing spectacular. The rest of their E3 was filled w/ games I already knew about &/or don’t care for. Looks like my wanted list remains pretty much the same: Yoshi, Devil’s 3rd, Legend of Kay, Rodea, Genei Ibun Roku, Fatal Frame, maybe X, & several high-profile indie titles, w/ SF0 now locked on my wanted list. No Retro project announced. Apparwntly no real Animal Crossing. No real F-Zero. No real Wave Race. No Sin & Punishment. No Cpt. Rainbow. When’s Shadow of the Eternals releasing?
& 3rd parties’ showings still cater almost exclusively to the PC/PS/X subculture w/ AAAs, photorealism, cutscenes galore, & mostly Western proclivities. No surprises there, & no hype. Many genres & franchises remain dead, while some franchises yet linger in name only.
Wii U has been the proverbial ‘canary in the coal mine’ to me for the state of the industry. Nintendo is slipping big, even in their own subculture, & the industry itself is largely unrecognizable. I spit @ the gaming gods for they have forsaken me. Even 3DS offers me little comfort. My gamer spirit is famished & near death. Only a miracle from Nintendo & 3rd parties can restore my faith. But who will restore SEGA, Capcom, Konami, Square-Enix, & Ubisoft to their former glories? Hel, I don’t believe in miracles.

I guess I am the minority but I was not disappointed by their E3 announcemnts, I love what nintendo is doing right now, ammibo too. I am getting close to 40 and have owned every console since the original NES, even the 3DO and Atari Jaguar. The Wii U is hands down my favorite console; pretty much any experience offered on other systems can be achieved on a PC now, you can’t get Nintendo anywhere but Nintendo (get your emulators out of here). Console exclusives have been overhyped and lack luster since Gears of War. Nintendo is entering a golden age and they are doing it on their terms instead of following trends. They are even nailing DLC right.

I actually feel their digital event was fine. A bit funny we got info on Star Fox that everyone was craving about not so long ago. Nintendo has spoiled those who have Nintendo with their Directs and always showing the consumer new ideas, games, DLC that is coming for the year. I suspect that we will get another direct soon and that will keep the fan(atics) informed and happy.
Aside from that and this is my opinion everyone else conference was kind of lack luster too.
Games were shown from all companies that we all knew about and the only real big news was backward compatibility with XB1
its not how they did the event or any thing like that, its that after all this time waiting we saw 1) a starfox that basically looks like a HD version of 64 with a few new add ons 2) a Metroid spin off with kid friendly art, that’s on its own is fine BUT we wanted a real Metroid game, if it was BOTH then who cares, but to ONLY have this joke of a game be the long awaited Metroid ? sorry that’s just crap 3) no Zelda? Reggie lies they show games all the time that a years off (bayoneta, xenoblade, smash brothers) no excuse not to have Zelda 4) so much talk over games we already knew about, why not just have a Nintendo direct about those as a pre event, and only talk about new things at E3 5) again a paper Mario / Mario & luigi spin off is fine, BUT to not have a brand new paper Mario RPG that fans have bin waiting for on wii U? again just crap. 6) mean while xbox is toting a new controller, pc streaming, oculus support, Minecraft on HoloLens, and those things support its new backwards compatibility which not even sony could figure out, Wii U didn’t even announce any updates to its system. 7) no devil’s third? or M rated games from Nintendo (they have the IP, they work with platinum its not like it would be hard for them, or something they haven’t done. 8) no new projects? no QOL? no news on the theme park stuff? no update on trying to get more amiibo out? not even a work about NX? no 3DS updates? honestly why dues reggi have a job? just for nostalgia and constantly having to act tuff for damage control? 9) its not what they showed, its what they dident show, no sunshine HD or sequel, no M rated first party, no big 3rd party games, no new big project, no real Zelda, no real Metroid, no real paper Mario, no big pokemon (snap 2? HELLO) no devil’s third, no updates, no new updated controllers, no gamecube on VC, no incentive to really look forward to, this is the show they should put on in early spring to show upcoming projects and small stuff, ITS E3!!! its supposed to be the time were they show the biggest and most exciting stuff, its the show that makes people buy systems, and to get excited for why they love Nintendo, or xbox, or sony. again the presentation was fine, its not about what they showed, its all the stuff they should have shown, its like waiting all year for birthday cake, and then when the day comes you get a muffin and some guy says ” sorry we just done make cake this time of the year” even though you distinctly remember having cake BEFOR!!!

Everybody seems to take this way to seriously, and everybody had way to high expectations for this year… I haven’t seen a single prediction that mentioned how Nintendo would have a hard time to surprise us with their games, and how they shot the big guns last year on a exceptionally great E3 presentation. This year was bound to be worse.
And people fail to realise how the Wii U is selling to bad to have many resources pumped into it. It’s not going to sell a million units more anymore but it doesn’t have to… They just need to keep it going until they release the NX, a system that they will make work, and that they are spending a lot of resources in to get games ready so it won’t be a second Wii U scenario where they trusted the third party developers to fill in the gaps between their own games and giving their titles the time to shine without being overshadowed by Nintendo’s games.
In the end this is still no excuse for the minimum of 3DS games. They should have had more games to show than they had. Especially with the New 3DS being launched this year…
I appreciate Nintendo so much….. But in the end, they aren’t delivering this year. Where is the next MOTHER? why isn’t it coming out? F-Zero? Where is it? There are so many IP’s, and so little games of them. I’m a HUGE Nintendo fan… but they aren’t surprising us with anything new or exciting. Yes, Zelda was amazingly awesome. But what about a MOTHER or F-Zero game with the same quality and content? People would FLIP A SHIT if something like that was premiered live. Even an HD Pokemon with open world qualities. I understand Mario and Zelda are the main IP’s and most recognized, but if they want Ness or Capt. Falcon to be more recognizable… they need to SHOVE them in peoples’ faces and make games for them. Oh, and Metroid…. that’s been asked for for YEARS. Federation whatever is NOT a Metroid game…. idc if it has Metroid in the title (just my opinion). Give us a REAL Metroid Prime or side-scroller at least. As for the NX possibly being announced….. boy do they need to blow us away with something. In my opinion, they need hardware that destroys the Wii U/Xbox1/PS4. That’s the only way they can get 3rd parties on board…. which they severely lack at the moment. More 3rd parties = more software = more console sales. No one says they have to sacrifice creativity for hardware…. so JUST DO BOTH? Goddamnit Nintendo, I love you to death but please start to understand what you need and what people want. :\ Rant done.
Thank you for saying they need to destroy ps4 and xboxone with the nx too. Some people seem to think being on par with them would be good enough. If it was on par, it would sell less than the wii u. What self-respecting person would buy two systems in the same gen just to get one on par with the competition? Anyone who supports that needs their head examined. And should be sent to an island. Where all the nintendo fanboys can live as one and stop supporting them when they do stuff like this.

Great article. It will be interesting to see what happens with Nintendo in the future. I can get behind them not wanting to hype something years down the road and understand where they are coming from.

I think iyawata and Miyamoto are just fine, I think Miyamoto maybe needs to let new talent be more them selfs (so we can get more games like Splatoon which almost got canceled) I think iyawata needs to hire some out side the box people from other companies to create a sort of think tank on ways to think new, but stay Nintendo. and reggie…..he is the one that needs to be replaced, no hard feeling but he just isent working right. they need someone aggressive, who isent afraid to get the US team to work on the games that US customers want, and understand its not always about “being different” but understanding what customers want to buy. they need someone who isent trying to be damage control, and instead is stealing the show from the competition.
We fans have been too easy on Nintendo the last few years. They are a business and they will cater to thier fans. But somewhere along the way we the fans have forgotten this, and so have Nintendo themselves..

Nintendo has always shown games at E3 that are not coming out for years. The Zelda series alone is guilty of this every gen. Reggie you really need to go. I used to like you, but now you’re just full of shit and are pretty much telling us to fuck off.
I was reading through the comments and realized that Reggie is nothing but a meme. He has done nothing to benefit the company besides go viral every now and then. Hell, Bill Trinen would be better as COO because he seems to at least understand the fans and can communicate with Japanese developers.
