Nintendo Spent 10% Of Income On Advertising During The Last Fiscal Year

Japanese publication Tokyo Keizai Online has revealed just how much Japanese companies have spent on advertising during the last fiscal year. Sony was number one as it had spent 444.4 billion yen on advertising which is around 5.4% of its total revenue. This wasn’t just the PlayStation division, but Sony as a whole. Nintendo was the only video game company to make the top fifty and was ranked at number 20 as the company had spent with 54.8 billion yen on advertising. This was around 10% of the company’s total revenue. Nintendo was one of two companies in the top fifty to spend 10% of total revenue on advertising. The average amount of money spent on advertising in Japan is 3.5% of income.

      1. Of it’s total revenue. That can mean a lot of things. For Sony it’s 5.4% and yet it’s almost 10 times more than what Nintendo invested.

You should ask yourself that question.

However you look at it, they spent much more on their ads than Nintendo, a company that is so cheap that they are known for their secure position and how they could survive till 2050, even if were constantly losing money. It’s not news that Nintendo is cheap, and it’s not news that they don’t advertise their products.

      1. I think you may have read the article incorrectly. It says Nintendo spent (in the last fiscal year) 54.8 billion Yen. A quick google conversion equates that to $460,698,120 (That’s 460 million US dollars) Is that half way good enough?

Spending more than 10% on advertising in a fiscal year is not good business practise. Also, advertising is not the same as marketing. TV commercials and billboards = advertising. Nintendo Directs = marketing.

        3. If things can be changed then OK that’s obviously up to Nintendo to decide and the whining and petitions etc etc will have little or no effect on Nintendo
        4. Not to long ago someone from Nintendo said we listen to the fans but it has little to do with how we do business or something along those lines
        5. Like I said before I could care less about what Nintendo do or don’t do I am an easy gamer to please and if Nintendo or Sony or Microsoft or whoever has games I know and like or new games I like I will buy them it is as simple as that

What I will say, however, is that there was a lot of games that focused on core gamers as well. That is what I haven’t seen in years.

        >Get rid of the gamepad. That thing costs $79.25 to make by itself. They should have gotten rid of that, then replaced it with a Wii remote that costs $50 to make. That would make it more advanced.

      3. You know there’s a third party Wii U controller that combines Wii U Pro and Wii Remote together and sold for only $40? Nintendo’s newest controller could’ve done exactly that on the fly and charge $60 for it separately WITH headphone jack for voice chat like the Xbox.

        Like

      4. Nintendo really should have done that. They wanted the gamepad to combine hardcore and casual gamers. It didn’t work. Hardcore gamers tend to like traditional controllers, and the gamepad had too many buttons plus the gyroscopes for casual gamers to enjoy it. I’m a mid-core gamer the gyroscopes annoyed me.

Nintendo should have updated the Wii Remote and kept the pro controller. Get rid of gyroscopes. Seriously they were annoying… I also like your idea of having a headphone jack. I don’t know about with the controller though. I like Sony’s idea with having it in the console itself with the USB port.

Also Minecraft, sports games, and pretty much all Nintendo titles say hi. You don’t need gore to sell, just marketing or quality.

Sony & Microsoft wish they had the software attach rate of Nintendo. They may sell systems, but Nintendo brings quality in their software bar none.

      10. Yooka Laylee is still aimed at mature audiences oif you think about it. Are the supported some mindless kids who thought it looked cool…or are they adults who, back in the dya, loved playing banjo kazooie (and other rare titles), wanted to relive their childhood memories, and donated. Which is more likely then?
Also, most cute and cuddly games don’t sell as well compared to Cod, battlefield, gta, assasins creed, etc…

But the same mindless drones who buy those shitty madden sports games in droves probably only want to play them on consoles that have good graphics and online. Also, nintendo titles? Have you been living under a rock or something, because as far as I know, no big game has ever saved the wii u.

I can’t reply to the other comment for some reason…

Anyway, I think Nintendo tried to have the best of both worlds which screwed them over. Nintendo wanted casual and hardcore fans and that isn’t possible. They showed off all those hardcore games at the 2012 E3 which didn’t work because the system was kind of weak… They tried to model the gamepad after a tablet but that didn’t work because of all the buttons and annoying ass gyroscopes.

Nintendo should have stuck with the full on casual feel. They should have updated the wiimotes instead of adding the gamepad. They should not have trusted third party companies with “making enough games to fill in the whole year so you can relax.” Simple business 101(and common sense to be honest) “DON’T LEAVE YOUR PRODUCTS FATE IN THE HANDS OF OTHERS!” “IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DONE RIGHT DO IT YOURSELF!”

Point is Nintendo should be full on casual. Apple and Nintendo are the same and parallel each other. At first they were innovators in the mouths of mainstream. When people thought of smartphones they thought of Apple, when people thought of consoles they thought of Nintendo. The masses picked them up and ate them. Problem is, when people see things working for a company, they instantly hop on it. Android to Apple is what Sony is to Nintendo; they took the male geek/tech savvy audience away. Apple marketed to women, while Nintendo is still trying to get tech savvy male gamers back. Nintendo went with Apple’s approach on the Wii, but went back to hardcore gamers with the Wii U.

      16. “some mindless kids who thought it looked cool”

Those mindless kids are the ones buying all your ‘mature shooting games’.

Your cuddly argument was already addressed. I’ll add Just Dance to that as proof kiddies/casuals matter.

Sports games aren’t even an option on U, so there’s no way to compare stats. But those ‘mindless drones’ are comparative to COD drones. FTFY.

When did I bring up anything about saving the Wii U? I didn’t say that.

        “still make much more money”
        Really?
Sony the corporation is bleeding money while PlayStation keeps them afloat, we’ll see where that goes down the road. And Microsoft isn’t pulling major profits from XB1. Meanwhile Nintendo sells 3DS like hot cakes, and doesn’t pay other studios for exclusives, they make their own.

If some Nintendo fans weren’t such blind defenders of them then their miserable failure of an e3 would’ve been scrutinised more harshly…putting more pressure on Nintendo to actually cater to their long time fans some more.

        Liked by 3 people

      2. Not all of Nintendo’s E3 2015 was underwhelming. The Smash Direct was neat and the Nintendo World Championships was awesome, but the thing that mattered the most, the Digital Event, was indeed underwhelming. So many spin offs, of Franchises that people wanted a true new game in. Metroid, Animal Crossing x2. With Federation Force for Metroid, AC:Happy Home Designer and AC:Amiibo Festival. There wasn’t even as much as a mention of Zelda U. I think they should have waited until the Digital Event, to reveal the Smash Bros stuff.

In my opinion, if it was a Nintendo Direct, then the announcements would have been great, but because it was E3, it felt underwhelming. But the Muppets stuff was great, so that’s a positive for the Digital Event.

      3. I’ll admit, it was pretty cool to see Ryo and Roy announced for smash (as well as a few classic stages) but really, if this was also included in e3, it might’ve spiced things up a bit.

Haven’t seen NWC 2015 so I can’t comment on it.

I’d say, for most fans, the biggest issue with the entire direct was that Zelda U wasn’t shown of…on top of that, there wasn’t a significant reason for not showing it off at e3. I heard that they actually had trailers and stuff all ready to go but decided not to use it. Massive failure.

I’d say the problem with the direct (and the wii u in general, as a fellow wii u owner) is that too many franchises are either…
1.Recieving spinoffs instead of actual new instalments (Kirby wiiu is basically canvas curse 2 rather than RTDL 2, animal crossing…you already know about that one, etc…). It’d be great if the wii u had a ‘Kirbys return to dreamland 2’ or ‘Animal crossing U’ bad sadly, that didn’t happen.

I’ll still probably buy the NX though X3 hopefully we’ll get a console fire emblem game this time!

      1. Really? It’s the opposite for me. I’ve been seeing PS4/XB1 commercials about every couple months since both launched. The last Nintendo commercial I recall was for MK8, and I’ve seen that one only a few times.
I don’t really know about Microsoft, but Sony has been advertising the PS4 outside TV commercials as well. For example, if you watch football, you’ll see PS4 banners around the field on a whole lot of matches. Seems pretty effective, as there’s a huge amount of people who watch football, making all of them potential buyers for Fifa, a game available on the PS4, which is being advertised during the football match they’re watching. Makes sense to me.
Nintendo should try to do that with MK and racing events like F1, lmao.

    2. Splatoon was heavily advertised. I can’t speak for every region but I believe they advertise heavily in Japan. I have seen Splatoon in US on AMC, Disney, Cartoon Network/Adult Swim, CW, CBS, NBC, and some other channels.

  9. Maybe if Nintendo stop fuckin with youtubers, by claiming their gameplay and reviews videos, they would have nonstop advertisement, FOR FREE!

watching gameplay videos on twitch and youtube, is like watching gameplay video in walmart, bestbuy, gamestop, ect, It’s not like anyone is taking any profit from nintendo, nintendo just decided to claim youtube videos, because they could and there is no one to stop companies that commit acts like that.

  10. I wish we could see a little of that advertising money in motion in the West. I’ve literally seen less than half a dozen Wii U adverts being broadcast. Sure, I can seek out a “TV Spot” on Nintendo’s website, but making a commercial and broadcasting it are two different things.

Every time I watch a major even on US television, I see roughly three commercials for the PS4 and two for the XBO. Wii U? Zero. 3DS? One every other blue moon or so.

  11. Yay for most of that money going to Splatoon, a on-disc locked content game (now formerly.) But that’s okay because it’s unlocked for free! That makes it so much better! Yay! Yay! Yay! *rolls eyes*

I wish Hyrule Warriors & Bayonetta 2 got months long worth of advertising like Splatoon is getting as I still see trailers for Splatoon while the former only had commercials on television for about a month then ceased. Watch Fatal Frame 5 & Xenoblade Chronicles X get one month’s worth of advertising then stop, just like the other two games I mentioned.

      1. Yes. That formerly on-disc locked content. Spare me the Nintendo defenses, though. Shady tactics, free or not, are still shady.

      2. It’s not shady in the slightest. The content was unfinished but left on there. The updates finished the content, thus why it was free. Nothing shady about it. If anything, it shows they wanted fans to be happy by finishing it for free.

      3. Still shady as it gave the game a false sense of replayability. If it didn’t hold back content, I doubt this game would still be in the lime light. So whether they meant to or not, it’s still bad. They should have just told us they were delaying it because there was still stuff that needed finishing. But held back content isn’t the only bad thing about Splatoon. No voice chat for those that actually have more fun being able to chat with people that AREN’T immature brats. (and there is the handy ability to turn voice chat off if you don’t like it.) Oh & no match customization is my 2nd biggest problem with Splatoon. I don’t like 2 minute matches. I barely, if ever, play Smash online because of that bullshit.

      4. That’s some heavy spinning you’r eputting on there. Again, it’s not shady in the slightest. And delayed it? Yeah, tell me how the public would have received that? “It’s delayed! That means the WiiU is dead!” It has nothing to do with faking replayability. They wanted fans to enjoy what was there, so they released it and are adding more and more to it for free. If adding free content is wrong, I don’t want them to be right.

      5. Whatever. Continue believing Splatoon is the greatest thing Nintendo has ever done. In truth, it’s shit & will be remembered as such when people realize Nintendo is pulling an EA & tricking you all into thinking otherwise because it’s “free.” On-disc locked content is still shady whether it’s free or not. Get that through your thick skull. We want complete games but I guess that only suits Nintendo when THEY feel like it.

      6. But guess what… IT’S FUCKING FREE!!! This is not EA where they would FUCKING CHARGE YOU FOR EVERY SINGLE THING!!! If EA made Splatoon instead, they would have charged you for the locked content or would have been a free to play game. You my friend are a fucking retard. There is locked content but its free content. Nothing shady about it you dumbshit. I don’t get why people think just because there’s locked content, they’re automatically pulling an EA. When we all know EA would charge you for it. So damn stupid

      7. Aw. Did I hurt your feelings by calling Nintendo out? Free or not, locked on-disc content is still fucking horrible and it’s fucking shady. But I guess a fanboy like you is too blind to see that. If you don’t like it, tough fucking shit! Now run along. eminem123! is waiting for you to join him in bending over a desk & taking Nintendo’s shit up your ass like a good little bitch.

I wish Nintendo would advertise ALL of their games as much as Splatoon as well. When I saw Splatoon getting all of these events and commercials, I thought, “why didn’t you do that with ALL of your games?” The Wii U had flaws other than advertising(I won’t list them all), but bad marketing made the console sell a lot worse.
