Phil Spencer: Console Wars Are “Unhealthy For Our Industry”

GameSpot has recently published an interesting interview with the head of Xbox, Phil Spencer. During the insightful interview Mr. Spencer acknowledged that the long running console wars on the internet are ultimately bad for the video game industry and even goes as far as to say that they are really unhealthy.

“I’ve said before, the one thing that I probably find a little distasteful in the discourse around games is the divisiveness that people try to build between platforms. It becomes more about what piece of plastic I own than what games I’m playing. It becomes more about somebody else failing than the things I love succeeding. I don’t think that’s a good place for our industry. I know that’s not everybody, and it’s easy to find the pockets of that vitriol and kind of think that that is gaming, but I’m not going to embrace that. I’m going to actively push against that. People sometimes will make fun of me that I mentioned Sony or I mentioned Nintendo. It’s not to placate anybody or make them think I’m some kind of good guy. My job isn’t really to keep you from buying something else. My job is to make you proud of what we offer, and to give you an enjoyable experience with the product we have. That’s 100% of what I’m focused on.”

“The things that are keeping me up at night are really all about that, and it’s the great thing about this industry, as I’ve said many times, is you do earn every customer. There’s nothing that I own that makes you have to go buy Halo. You’re going to buy Halo 5 because you love it, or you’re not because you don’t. That’s just a fantastic part of the industry that we’re in, and I fully embrace that. I’m trying to keep our organization and, hopefully, our fans, out of that type of stuff, because I think that’s just incredibly unhealthy for our industry.”

      1. Honestly! I personally have always played/owned PC, Xbox, and Nintendo systems. what happened to gamers just having fun playing different kinds of games, now every thing is cut content for DLC (first party games tend to not do this but third parties abuse the DLC system…..DESTENY) now its all about what ever big AAA game is coming out, feeling nostalgic about new content (how ever that works) , talking crap online, and fighting over what system is better. ok sure we can talk about the advantages one system has over another, wii U has the biggest veriaty of controls, xbox runs on windows 10 and has the most to offer out side of jus gaming, and sony is the most pick and play system. also PC tends to just be better when it comes to most sim games. wasn’t gaming about fun?

        1. That’s why I don’t comment much on this or other sites anymore. Other than the fact that work has me busy as heck, I find myself enjoying games much more without seeing the negativity pouring out of gaming communities online.

          Play games! Have fun!

  1. I think maimly the console war between Sony and Microsoft is responsible. Nintendo branched off in its own direction, while Sony & Microsoft are still competing against eachother (come on in, fanboys, come on in)

  2. Kinda funny considering this is coming from someone at Microsoft, the company that paid to make Rise of the Tomb Raider a timed XBO exclusive so they would have something to go up against Uncharted.

    1. I will add I don’t have anything against Phil Spencer, but what he says kind of goes against Microsoft’s actions. I loved that he was completely for the idea of Banjo Kazooie being added to Smash.

Well let’s be honest here. What Microsoft did is no different from what Nintendo did with Bayonetta 2. In fact, I would like it if Nintendo fought fire with fire & done the same thing every now & again by paying for timed exclusives. If buying for time exclusivity is in the best interest of their consumers that bought their consoles, I’m willing to support that business model.

      1. No there was a very big difference. Sega refused to give Platinum the money for Bayonetta 2, and as much as I hate to say it it made sense. Sega, I’m not sure at the moment but at least at that time, was not in a very good position money wise and the original Bayonetta did not sell that well, the Platinum curse.

Square Enix however is a very different situation, they had plenty of money to produce RotTR, nothing was stopping them, Microsoft just gave them money for it. Same for Sony giving Activision money for exclusive Destiny related content and Square Enix as well getting the FF7 remake before any other platforms.

    3. It’s all sympathy BS. I’m not a sucker into his obvious “sweet words” game just so I can agree and then end up liking that fucker for no good reason an buy that POS DRM console for a cablebox..that blows up.

You can be allowed to like him and still not buy an Xbox One if you want. It’s not like he can control what you do anyways.

          1. Damage controlling what? Xbox One is still selling very well and everyone is over the DRM fiasco from the console’s initial announcement. He has no need to damage control.

Xbox has one of the best lineups this holiday season when it comes to a mix of first and third party games; AAA and indie.

I’ve met the guy and he’s a genuinely down to earth, fun loving type of guy. He’s kind of like Xbox’s Shuhei Yoshida. They’re just people who love games. Yeah, they happen to work for certain companies but they can’t be employed at all of them at once.

            1. Selling..my ass, to Satan. Xbox, compare to even 360, is selling like shit..as usual and a lot like in Japan right now. Why you think the brand never made a penny and always ended up in 3rd place? And of course that’s exactly what Phil is doing: Kissing ass to pathetically restore whatever dignity was lost from Microsoft who in fact is still dumb and greedy in some areas which I must bring up a point: The whole DRM thing, why you think it took Microsoft so long to finally snap out of their 3 month long retard moment and finally fire Mattrick AFTER E3 over the DRM debacle when that the first time spark huge trouble for the company and Xbox brand in general instead of making those changes a lot sooner like say..RIGHT AFTER THE XBOX ONE REVEAL?!

        1. And look at how well it did for those greedy fucks in corporations. Nintendo system/account links are hated, Xbox One is hated universally except Xbot morons and PS4 is basically playing “shadow” on both Microsoft and Nintendo over whatever they do or feature..more over on Nintendo’s side.

            1. “Digital rights management (DRM) is a term referring to various access control technologies that are used to restrict the usage of proprietary software, hardware, or content.”

You were saying smartass? DRM means “dictatorship” over hardware and software distribution to consumers and people HATE TECHNOLOGY RESTRICTIONS! Why you think fans are complaining about Nintendo’s Region Lock and System-linked account system? Why you think Android fanboy idiots claim Apple is “too strict” on third party? (That’s mainly because they are serious about security and stability so Apple is kinda in the right and their “DRM” isn’t as bad as it seems and their account system is better than any gaming account systems)

              1. Yes people complain about but as always people have a choice to buy or not buy. Why complain about something you knew ahead of time before purchasing. No company hides the DR in their products. I wasn’t being a smartass. I just wanted you to know that all consoles and pc have DR for the protection of the business. Consumers don’t run the business they either support or don’t support businesses.

I like this guy. Phil Spencer is right. We shouldn’t be fighting over consoles & taking sides. In fact, we should be working together AGAINST these video game companies. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, 3rd parties. They are all doing some things wrong that is not in our best interests, but because we’re too busy being idiots fighting over what console or game is better, we ignore the faults so we can make our preferred company look better when they really aren’t any better than the others. Look no further to when the Xbone was first revealed. It wasn’t just Microsoft fans dissing them for the ideas they were trying to force with the Xbox One but Sony, Nintendo, etc fans as well. Hell! Even Konami trying to abandon all of us for mobile gaming is uniting us. This is another reason I’m no longer loyal to Nintendo, anymore, because I’ve realized they aren’t any damn better than the others that screw us. They aren’t as bad as EA but I wouldn’t say they are any better, either. Sadly, I’m still getting into “wars” with people. lol Can’t win either way, eh.

    1. Nintendo Sub-Commander Cereza

Back when I was still of flesh; My cousin and I agreed to buy different consoles back in the 90’s. That way, we could both try the best of both worlds without having to spend a lot of money.
I had Snes, he had the Genisis, I had the N64, he had the PSX, I went gamecube, and he had PS2. And it was great. We would visit eachother alot, and say “Got any new games?” We had favorites from each others and opposite consoles. It was definitely a highlight of my life. I dont remember when I became elitist. It was around the time Wii came out I think…

Now I’m on the dark side. A mercenary for the Great Nintendo Empire.

      1. Xenorogue Master Ridley X3

I had a friend in the mid-90s who had a Genesis while I had an SNES. I’d go over to his house every now & then to play Sonic the Hedgehog 2 with him. Too bad I don’t have a friend nearby that I can do that with today.

      2. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

        >>>We became mercenaries when the Xbots invaded our realm, there will be no peace until they are extinct>>>

  4. This man speaks the truth. I even realized this ever since last year and even more during this E3. This war shit is so stupid. Just get what console you want and enjoy it. For the first time in this entire gaming industry, I actually want to get every single console on the market right now. Even the Vita. There’s a literally games I want on every single console And because of this, I realized how stupid this gaming war really is. Everyone just likes making a simple business competition into some big war. WTF??!? It’s fucking business. Yes they’re competing since they’re in the same market but that’s it…

    1. It’s stupid butt making war is just in mandkind DNA we just make war for everything even stupid stuff.
Personly i support Nintendo just for their game other game don’t make me interested in them butt tel people that you only like Nintendo and than you are a fanboy in their eye’s it’s just idiotic you can’t like somthing anymore without being called a fanboy

      1. Welcome over! It’d be great if you could get every system. I have all of them currently. While I don’t use all of them every day, I do get good gaming time out of each one. It’s all about playing games you like. Screw the negativity. This industry and community definitely needs a shot of positive energy.

  5. I don’t think the so-called “Console Wars” is unhealthy. In every industry there has to be competition. It’s not a format war like VHS vs Betamax – or Blu-ray vs HD-DVD where the industry /consumers wait for the results to pick a side and move on…I think the videogame industry has proven there will probably always be room enough for a “Big 2” or “Big 3” – regardless who they are…
    we live in exciting times:
    * If anything, competition keeps everybody on their toes.
*A high tide raises all ships. (Gaming is truly mainstream. It is no longer
    perceived as “nerdy”.
*No one is in a business to lose money, hence, it’s survival of the fittest.

Having said that, this generation I embraced the WiiU and PS4. Nintendo has a charm about them that the other guys don’t have…and the PS4 is a technological beast. I can’t afford a 3rd console so…

    1. Spencer was talking about how people say “this is better than that” and stuff like that. That’s the “war” he was implying. Competition is different. Competition between business is something that’s been going on for a long time. It’s normal. And Spence knows that.

    1. You kind of contradict yourself.
      1. Fanboys is just another term for fans that has been turned into an offensive term
      2. Casual gaming dominates the market and has helped expand it to everybody, and has ALWAYS existed
      3. I’m kind of with you on developers like EA, Ubisoft, and Activision with their mentality on DLC

  6. yeah the consoles wars was a little bad but its too bad SEGA did not join the console wars after what happen in the late 90s.

          1. HollowGrapeJ (The Legendary Video Game Master And Anime Wizard)

Doesn’t that mean Nintendo is responsible for it too though? You cannot start a war by yourself.

            1. No it does not and yes you certainly can. SEGA provoked consumers to react a certain way and more or less set consumers down this path of ignorance and arrogance while touting being cool was what gaming was about rather than having actual fun. That’s not something Nintendo ever supported. Yeah there was “Get N or get out” but that was all about playing the fun games on the console, not that you would be cool if you joined the Nintendo ranks.

  7. This damn pop up that says: No notifications …..yet.
    Get active! Comment on posts.

OMG! It is literally covering the entire site! I’m lucky to post this as there is a half inch space that allows me to see the site. Seriously… wtf… of this doesn’t clear up I’m finished with this place…

    1. @ deepsouth1,
I’m having different problems with this site. First, it makes me sign in with Twitter each time I come back and try to comment (instead of staying signed in). Second, I can’t get it to post my comment without the extra “(@Collect_Or_Die)” connected to my username. Very annoying. And finally, every time I’m trying to write a comment, the screen bounces back up to the top of the screen, and I have to scroll back down to continue writing. I have to write my comment elsewhere, then copy and paste it here just to post a comment now. I hope these problems get fixed.

You do know by being part of the so called PC Master Race that you are indirectly swearing allegiance to Microsoft, right? I mean, they are heavily involved in PC gaming, after all.
