As of last week the Nintendo 3DS has shifted an impressive 20 million units since its launch back in 2011 in Japan. It had a slow start, but it gradually caught on with gamers due to its impressive library of games. Below you can see the top five best-sellers in Japan and as expected it is the Nintendo DS that came out on top closely followed by the Game Boy and Game Boy Colour.
- Nintendo DS: 32.86M
- Game Boy / Game Boy Colour: 32.47M
- PlayStation 2: 21.98M
- Nintendo 3DS: 20.03M
- PlayStation Portable: 19.69M
Damn, 3DS is going to out-sell the PS2 in Japan. Great console, with so many great games!
I had no idea the PSP was that popular there. I thought it’d be between the 12 and 15 million mark.
Then again, it was a Monster Hunter machine, mostly.
Anyway, great news for Nintendo.
Yup, it actually sold very well everywhere (for different reasons outside of Japan though lol) its funny how that little booger was mock for not moving units but in the end it rivaled (and beat, if I am correct) the PS3 and 360 in units sold to date.

Agreed. Still play mine to this day. No rush in getting a Vita, though, the current catalog doesn’t appeal to me at all.
I use to love mine, it has since become a way to play my PS1 games, and that’s it. Like you said, the catalog isn’t as impressive and leaves a lot to be desired. Amazingly impressive handheld though but it has such a shitty library with scares gems scattered in it. It’s just not worth it.
I’m eagerly waiting the day when the thing is fully pirated and the emulators start flowing, though. We might not get anything that we can’t already emulate in PSP, but I’m sure the extra power will come in handy for extra stability/compatibility.

Yup. Pretty impressive, although it is a handheld and those tend to do well in Japan. Either way, it’ll surely pass the PS2 soon enough. Also, it’ll be cool to see 3 of Nintendos handhelds from different generations as the top 3 consoles in Japan.
Well the Japanese buy every new fancy design of 3DS that comes out lol.
