SEGA Thanks Sonic Fans On Hedgehog Day

SEGA has taken to their official blog to thank Sonic fans for supporting the franchise as today February 2nd is known as Hedgehog Day. The team couldn’t help but tease a little more about Sonic’s 25th Anniversary which is being celebrated this year and promises that they have some “cool stuff” to share shortly regarding this. Anyway, here’s the company’s message to the Sonic the Hedgehog fans out there.

As we enter Sonic’s 25th Anniversary Year, it’s an exciting time to be a Sonic fan.

Isn’t it crazy to think it’s been 25 years since Sonic 1 released? Some of you reading this probably weren’t even born when the older among us pooled up our allowance to buy a copy of Sonic for our Genesis or Mega Drive. But, no matter our age, we all celebrate and follow the iconic blue blur for reasons that remain universal.

I know at least half of you reading this are thinking: “Hey! Are you announcing anything big today, like Sonic Labyrinth 2 or Tails Sky Patrol IV? What’s the scoop?”, but you’ll need to be patient for a while longer. Good things take time, and we’re sticking to that. That said, you’ve probably noticed a few numbers floating around here and there. Who knows that they might mean? (By the way, in case you missed it – those weren’t eyes, they were zeros.)

A few years ago, during my first tour of duty with SEGA, our team decided to post something teasing an upcoming announcement on February 2nd, or “Hedgehog Day”. This was a fun reference back to the release of Sonic 3, which took over “Groundhog Day” in much the way that any tyrannical conqueror takes something they want – by force. Inspired by the marketing bloodlust of our forefathers, “Hedgehog Day” was reborn again from the ashes of the 90’s, and each year we’ve tried to keep it going ever since.

Sonic has seen a wide range of games and gameplay styles, but whether you prefer the classics, the Adventure series, the Colors/Generations style, or anything in between, thanks for sticking with the blue blur through thick and thin.

We can’t wait to celebrate the 25th Anniversary with you all throughout the year – and we have some pretty cool stuff coming up.

        1. But for the 25th Anniversary? Don’t be ridiculous. You know Sega wouldn’t do their fans with a big milestone of their mascot’s franchise. The 25th Anniversary will be a brand new 3D Sonic game. That much you can absolutely be for sure about.

                          1. Kid do you know what a guess is and it is based off of past game decisions and shut up little child you are making assumptions like an idiot

            1. Sonic Adventure Battle 3. I still have gardens of sprawling lil Chao running around on old GC memory cards. GameCube, what a system. What a wonderful and simple time in gaming life.

          1. I kind of feel that the Sonic Adventure series is pretty overrated.
If you look back on it, the only good parts are the Sonic and Shadow stages whilst everyone else was just boring and dull.

Now Sonic Colours, Sonic Generations and Sonic Lost Worlds.
Those are games I want to see, with a 2.5D style rather than the 2D Sonic or the 3D Sonic.

            1. I’m SO tired of that dumb 2.5D Camera switch from the Boost games. If it’s a 3D game make it 3D. If it’s 2D, make it 3D. And that thing you mentioned about the Speed Stages being the most enjoyable? Well, in my idea for a new Adventure Series, get rid of the other playstyles just “Get to the Goal Ring” Stages for all the characters. Just like Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

            1. This comment was supposed to be a reply to the person who said “This is My Nintendo News not My Sega News” but for some reason it never went in as a reply

          1. SEGA and Nintendo are friends now and work together frequently. That and SEGA has released a lot of Nintendo-exclusive games. I think it’s okay. While it’s not exactly Nintendo, they are increasingly becoming a company that’s related to them.

        2. It is crazy how long Sonic has been around. 25 years.. dang.

It’s also crazy how many Sonic games have released since his inception, and how few of them have really been good. :/

I like Sonic, and I hope this year sees a good game in the series.

          1. I’m really not a fan of the series, but I’d still say that the handheld games in the series have stayed relatively strong through the whole post-classic series time period (except for Generations 3D *shudders*). Sonic Rush or the Advance games are pretty good examples. Even Sonic Boom Shattered Crystal is probably* much better than that of its console counterpart (*I say probably because I’ve played neither).

Maybe handheld Sonic games are just able to be better under the strict dev time limits that have been placed by Sega on the games in the past (such as Sonic ’06).

            1. That’s true, the GBA and DS games were consistently good.

I’m mostly just speaking terms of the amount of good games vs bad games. The console games specifically have been very inconsistent in terms of quality lol.

          2. well i don’t mind waiting for something big coming up for sonic’s 25th anniversary but lets hope they give us more info about the statues and the game as well. you know the classic 2D series of sonic was a bit ok but i hope this anniversary be like sonic adventure.

        3. Freaking awesome. I love Sonic. Really hoping that this game for his anniversary will be a great game. I still play Generations every now and then and add some crazy mods. Hah.

          1. You’ve never been to the Chao Garden? WHAT?!?!! Those little things are adorable and I’ve spent countless hours training my Chao to grow up and be awesome. You missed out on some good stuff!

        4. well i don’t mind waiting for something big coming up for sonic’s 25th anniversary but lets hope they give us more info about the statues and the game as well. you know the classic 2D series of sonic was a bit ok but i hope this anniversary be like sonic adventure.
