Nintendo Attempts To Explain Why Super Mario Maker Levels Are Vanishing

Nintendo of America has updated its support page and has attempted to explain why some Super Mario Maker levels are being deleted. As we’ve previously reported there are a number of disgruntled users out there that have had their carefully created level removed for no specific reason, hence why Nintendo is now trying to explain why this has happened. Here’s what the company had to say on its support page.

Unfortunately, we sometimes have to delete courses from Course World. Below are cases where courses can be removed from the server:

  • Low stars/plays
    • After a fixed period of time, courses with low stars/plays will be automatically deleted from the server.
  • Bugs
    • Courses that include bugs that were unintended by either the course creator or the developers will be deleted. It’s important that we remove levels with bugs quickly, because letting these levels remain in Course World can lead to negative outcomes for many players such as players experiencing levels in unfair ways that the original course creator did not intend, or re-writing “World Record” times.
  • Requesting stars from other users
    • Courses that are explicitly asking for stars from other players will be deleted. For example, using words such as “Like”, “Yeah!”, and the “★” symbol in their course names. Please change the course name when saving a course that includes these words.
  • Inappropriate Content
    • Courses that contain something inappropriate, such as offensive language or phrases will be deleted.
  • Other behavior in violation of the Nintendo Network Code of Conduct. Please note that repeated violations can result in additional penalties.

  1. Okay, that’s… uh… fine.

But at least Nintendo just tell the individual course creators that a course was deleted for one of those reasons. Like how Smash Bros. will tell you that you were banned because of a particular reason and at what length the penalty will be.

    1. 🎭Mr. Boss Ass Bitch💊

Smash Bros doesn’t tell when your truly banned. I been there. And it fucking sucks ass.

    2. That actually happens in Smash? I’ve been playing For Glory ever since, what on Earth does one have to actually do to get banned?

      1. I’ve been through 2 timed Ban’s the first was 10 minutes, the second was 15 minutes. Both we’re results of my own fault. First time I dropped my 3ds waiting for a match and the top screen folded down turning off my connection. Second time my internet service went out due to a storm.
Interestingly enough, recently the weather got nuts while playing and it happened again and it let me join back up with no issues. Haven’t been through a ban since.

      2. I’m… pretty sure that (vaguely) happens in Smash. Then again, while I’ve played a bunch of online matches online on both systems, I’ve never been banned and I’m getting this off of screenshots and whatnot, so…

        … yeah.

  2. I mean, it’s only logical why they need to do it. But it’s still really not motivating when a level you but hours into got deleted because it was: 1) Too hard for casuals, or 2) You just weren’t lucky enough to get any plays on it.

      1. Not if it’s been removed. It’ll be marked by a “Uploaded” mark, but a red cross (or something) over it. You couldn’t even edit it, and then upload. I had to recreate a level just because of that… Though, it did turn out better than it originally was.

I’m not sure, as I haven’t had any removed since, but I think copying it BEFORE uploading might be a solution, as you can just upload the copy, should it be removed.

  3. This is not a sustainable infrastructure. Does this mean that, inevitably, all levels will be deleted? What happens when someone wants to play this game in about 10 years?

  4. Like, I understand it, but it also seems kind of flawed? How am I to even get people to play my levels without being some meme spouting youtuber, or making an auto level?

  5. They should just open another server or two- they have enough in the bank and SMM’s sales alone could probably pay for them. I’m all for deleting levels that contain inappropriate stuff or contain bugs or glitches that mess things up, but deleting levels that people who are serious about their creations and put hours upon hours of work into- and making it impossible to re-upload them again- is one thing that can really kill this game. And I’ve had two levels deleted already; both took 8 hours to make, proofplay, edit, and test.

Those levels that get you can tell just got hacked together in 3 minutes (random ground placement, mostly flat with no enemies or way too many enemies in one spot, levels where deaths are borderline random, etc.), THOSE are what should get deleted after awhile if they don’t get stars, which somehow they do. *coughcoughcasualscough*

    1. Good point, but imagine all the practical issues coming from it. Imagine the human resources needed to playthrough all those low-quality levels. Too much legwork for not much effect.

  6. I don’t care if this game burns in hell.. worst mario game ever IMO.. If this game was developed le’ts say way back in the N64/gamecube era that would have been game of the decade.. but this game is so late, that i consider it nausiance

    1. It could’ve never been done on previous gen, WiiU gamepad controls are basically THE exclusive way for the execution of Mario Maker. Imagine creating levels with thumbstick controls. Even on PC it would be tiresome. I think Mario Maker is prime example of perfectly landed WiiU game.

      1. They could have designed an accessory item during retro consoles then it could work.. i.e duck hunt used the N-zap and it didnt need the wiimote, mario paint utlised a mouse… So nintendo would have came with a solution at that time… But TBH i just hate mario maker, sorry, although it’s a great system seller, but if i can be selfish, then the time developing mario maker they could have released a full new 3d game instead, or better yet a new IP.. Just an opinion of a random selfish guy
