A Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Interview Revealed Details On The Story, Upgrades, Rupees & More

Another Zelda: Breath of the Wild interview with various Nintendo figures on IGN has revealed more details on the game. The first thing revealed was rupees. Aonuma said that “Rupees do exist, but the reason for their existence is a little different this time around. As you saw it’s not about going to cutting down grass and collect rupees or find them in treasure chests but it’s about collecting things and going to sell them and then using the rupees you get to buy new things. The rupees are there but they serve a different purpose”. Upgrades were also mentioned. Aonuma says “the upgrade path is very Zelda-like”, but after being asked by IGN on whether they should “assume it takes place within towns and leave it at that”, Aonuma said “not quite” and laughed.

As for the story, there were some things hinted. Aonuma talked about the arrow seen in the trailer, explaining that “yes, you’re right that arrow is definitely an important part of the game and actually getting that arrow is very important to navigating the game. To reveal it now would be a spoiler so I don’t want to say too much”. As for his blue outfit, Aonuma says “the clothes he’s wearing right now is actually the same clothes that he was wearing in the trailer that we’ve shown previously. We thought that having him wear this tunic for this demo would make it a little more familiar to people watching the game demo and trailer this time around. Link gets that blue suit at a very important juncture in the storyline, and we also showed suit of armor you can get too. There’s also times when Link will venture out into the cold and he’ll need to appropriately equip himself, so there’s definitely a lot of variation types of clothes he can wear”.

Miyamoto & Bill Trinen also had some things to say about the story. Miyamoto says that “this game has a heavy focus on experience and also freedom. It’s not really story heavy. You can choose to do all of the tasks and all of the missions and you’ll still get to the end, or you could choose not to do all of them, and you can still get to the end. The story isn’t as clear-cut as it was in the past with the existence of Ganon, Link, and Zelda. With this one it’s a little bit more vague. You’ll kind of feel what Ganon is, and you’re going to feel maybe this is what Zelda is like, or this is what Link is like. It’s really Link’s adventure in discovering all of that”. As for Trinen, he said that “they’ve done a really good job of weaving the story into the world, giving you just enough direction to know, generally, where you need to go to pursue it. If you’re off doing other things and you decide you want to go complete the Shrines, or you want to go climb mountains, or you want to go look at deer in the field, or find that pond that had all the ducks in the trailer, you can do that. I get into the game and then go off to do random things. Then, maybe after a couple of days of playing, I’ll think that maybe I should actually go to that place [someone I met in the story] talked about. Then, you go there and get enough clues to point you in [the next] direction. It’s does a really good job of guiding you to where the story is, but it still feels like a sort of chance encounter out in the world when you come across somebody who has a role to move the story forward”.

Finally, Miyamoto talked about the open-world gaming formula. He explains that “sandbox games is what they’re typically called here, but before anybody called them sandbox games, I always described Nintendo games as being a garden in a box. Zelda is a garden in a box game where the player can freely go around and experience [the world]. There are quests. Sometimes we call them little chores that we need to do, but there are missions. On the systems side, you get a list of missions that’s easy to look into and check on”.

      1. They seem kind of important, but I can’t tell for sure. Like, they were losing health for not wearing the right type on Mount Hylia, but at the same time. I guess you could eat certain things if you wanted to keep wearing a certain outfit.

      2. Ive always thought different. One of my biggest complaints about Dark Souls 3 is the armor not having enough impact on your defences. I guess im more old fashioned, and like the Dragon Quest design where wearing the right armor can make the difference between life and death. Also I like how Monster Hunter handles armor. Those games are all about having the right equipment.

  1. So the story won’t be that good huh… Well that’s kind of disappointing. This game and Horizon Zero Dawn have been tied in hype levels for me. It’s like some kind of battle in my head xD. Now, after hearing this news, I’m a bit more hyped for Horizon Zero Dawn. Breath of the Wild do what you can to win this!!!!!! OK I’ll leave now…

    1. I don’t really feel like there was an implication of bad story being implied here… It’s just a different method of story telling.

The way they describe the story telling here reminds me a lot- so far -of how the stories in Dark Souls and Bloodborne were told. There’s a ton of story and lore in those games, but it’s far less actively told and there’s a lot to read out of your surroundings in what happened. And from what I can tell out of the demo, it seems like there’s still a type of active storytelling anyways.

    2. I for one like the sound of how they’re approaching story. I couldn’t stand the way it was handled in Skyward Sword.

But then you have Ocarina of Time, that had this basic story that you would understand just playing through normally, but when you go out of your way to talk to NPCs and read the Gossip Stones, things get far more interesting and fleshed out.

Then you have Skyward Sword, where every character is like someone out of a Banjo Kazooie game, just existing to make a request of the player or give instructions, and add nothing to the world itself.

I’d gladly take a game with small focus on the story that you flesh out by exploring over a linear cinematic game without much more than what’s on the surface any day.

    3. Zelda has never been story heavy, with the exception of Skyward Sword. I love story in my games, but I also like the idea of having to work for the story. I loved slowly unraveling the mystery in Bloodbourne.. You played half the game not knowing what the F was going on, but the more you learned about the world, the more interested you became. It really made the later levels far more immersive.

  2. Sounds kind of like how Metroid Prime used visual storytelling and had the computer things which gave info about the previous events. Could be interesting. Btw only played prime games so idk if all Metroid games do it.

  3. Yeah, I don’t think he’s saying the story won’t be heavy and part of the game. More that they’re letting the players take different routes to play and beat it how they like. I’m definitely stoked for this now.

I hope Mask’s make some type of return. I absolutely loved all the different things they did in Majora’s Mask, give them some functionality and boom! I’m in either way though, monies ready. Bring it on. 2017.

  4. I hate all of the talk about how you can do as little (or as much) as you want, and still finish the game. I’ve never been a fan of pointless side missions that doesn’t do anything to the overall outcome or ending. But I’m not going to worry about it. If the game is good, it’s good. If it’s disappointing, then oh well. Won’t be the first time that a Zelda game disappointed me.

    1. Your avatar really fits your personality. Reading your comments, I always feel like you are Comic Book Guy himself.

  5. Calling it now… you need “that” arrow to defeat Ganon.

He said you can “go to the end goal”. He never said you can beat it.

  6. Why doesn’t Nintendo just put music, like the music from Zelda Breath of the Wild and other games, on the my nintendo site as an optional reward!? I would definitely spend reward points on that!
