Nintendo Is Exploring Possible Smartphone Peripherals & More Apps

Nintendo‘s general manager of entertainment planning and development, Shinya Takahashi, has mentioned that the company is exploring the mobile industry in multiple ways, including potential peripherals. Takahashi said that “physical controllers for smart device applications are available in the market and it is possible that we may also develop something new by ourselves. I believe Nintendo’s way of thinking is to look at whether action games are really not impossible (without a physical controller for smart device applications) to create and how we can make it happen to create such a game”. Takahashi also said that Nintendo was also interested in straying from the norm in mobile gaming and is committed to exploring different types of apps like Miitomo. President Tatsumi Kimishima agreed, adding that Japanese smart phone game platform provider DeNA and Nintendo have plans to launch “various projects in the future.”

  1. they should buy RIM/blackberry
then make their own windows 10 & android phones (they run on the same hardware these days, so they could really just make one phone with your choice of OS)
and then have a click on controller and have a exclusive Virtual Console app that plays Nintendo classics (with cloud saves) it would be cool to have as a monthly service too….

applications? that’s another reason why they should just buy RIM. they would have all kinds of cell phone patents and a software team that has LOTS of experience in phone OS and application making.
they could even integrate black berry messenger to miivers (Nintendo skype)

    they better do this carful.

    1. Not going to work: I can tell you right now that the Canadian government WILL block that sale (since they’ve blocked it more than once because of security concerns as well as the government’s pride in the company: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/international-business/asian-pacific-business/lenovo-considered-a-bid-for-blackberry-but-ottawa-wouldnt-accept-chinese-takeover/article15256976/ and http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2011/12/28/despite-rim-takeover-talk-hurdles-would-be-high).

With that said, I think that making a Nintendo phone would be a horrible idea; gaming and mobile don’t seem to go well together (Sony has proven this more than one).

      1. Plus, I don’t think that:

        1) Nintendo’s shareholders would like to buy a foreign company that isn’t doing well,
        2) RIM (now called Blackberry)’s management would be okay with the purchase, and
        3) Blackberry’s shareholders wouldn’t be so happy with the purchase from a Japanese gaming company that (in their eyes, at least), is “dying”.

In any case, there would be no hope.

    2. I have a feeling they won’t be making their own phone anytime soon, knowing how many people try to sue Nintendo on a daily basis. That would only increase the amount of bogus claims (that occasionally are successful) that Nintendo has to deal with, imo.

They wouldn’t have any problem releasing a Virtual Console app on other smartphones to begin with, most likely, as Nintendo would regulate it like they always do.

  2. I wouldn’t be surprised if they decided to do something with amiibo, like releasing a phone peripheral that can read and write to them, similar to the amiibo reader they released for the 3DS.

About a year or two ago, weren’t they working on an idea of releasing an emulator for retro games, like Gameboy and NES for smartphones… or am I remembering incorrectly?

  3. I thought they were going 2 make a Wii remote 4 the Apple TV & a small controller with bracket 4 mobile devices
