It seems like there’s still quite a bit of life left in the Nintendo 3DS and if you’ve been watching TV you’ve probably seen a number of adverts for the New Nintendo 2DS. Game Informer managed to secure an interview with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime who talked to the publication about the company’s plans for the system going forward. Reggie says that the company is looking to market the handheld to the millions of young children, and parents with young children, and it seems like it’s working.
“Here in the U.S., through May, it’s up 10 percent year on year. It continues to be a vibrant system. The reasons are, for the target audience we are going after – parents with kids – we see this as a great first device for that five, six, seven, and eight-year-old. The portability, the ability for the hardware to take damage and survive the drop test, over a thousand games available with new ones coming, that’s what’s driving the performance. It becomes a gateway for these kids that turn 10, 11, and 12 to then jump on to Nintendo Switch. It’s a strategy that’s working, and we’re going to continue to support that platform. We have more games coming, and certainly into 2019, we see it as a key part of our business.”
Yeah we’ve read that like a thousand times.
Ew…
Kids.
“You’re dead if you aim only for kids. Adults are only kids grown up, anyway.”
– Walt Disney
Do you want to target 8 years old system with outdated graphics to adults?
I think it would be better if they retired the system altogether and focus on the Switch honestly.
Good luck marketing the fragile Switch to 6 year olds then. Seriously though, N doesn’t develop anything for the 3DS and they need some cheap system for families with small kids.
The DS line isn’t really that stable with its hinges either, half my friends growing up somehow found a way to break them. The thing they have to worry most about with the Switch are the Joycons, and that would be a cheaper replacement as opposed to the DS back in its hay day.
I can’t really comment on the DS, but 3DS is really resistant system, plus it “auto-closes” most of the time it falls.
Annnd there goes the 3DS.
It’s smart. I see it work with my 9-yr old sister. She STILL plays the 2DS, and STILL asks for new games! Does she want a Switch? Yes. But she is consistently playing the 2DS.
