On May 15, classic NES™ games Donkey Kong Jr.™, Clu Clu Land™ and VS. Excitebike™ are coming to the Nintendo Entertainment System™ – Nintendo Switch Online collection, bringing its total number of games to more than 40. That’s dozens of classic games that can be played on the Nintendo Switch™ system anytime and anywhere with a Nintendo Switch Online membership, with even more games on the way!
- Donkey Kong Jr. – Based on the popular arcade game, Donkey Kong Jr. is the sequel to the immensely successful Donkey Kong™ game. Play as Donkey Kong’s son, and rescue your dad who has been kidnapped and imprisoned in a cage by Mario. Use jumping and climbing abilities to clamber up vines and chains, gather vital fruit and keys, and open the cage to free your father. Make sure you avoid the pesky birds, nasty electric sparks and creepy chompers. Four different worlds filled with numerous climbing and jumping puzzles await you in this timeless classic.
- VS. Excitebike – Fans love the Excitebike™ game for its frenetic races, high stakes and sweet jumps. With this game, you can take it to the next level with the Famicom™ disk version of VS. Excitebike – complete with two-player split screen. Create tracks from 20 classic Excitebike track parts, and go for a best time or take on friends. Racing is even more exciting when the rivalries are real. You can also try out the single-player mode in VS. Excitebike. It adds tracks, music and the ability to save your high score.
- Clu Clu Land – The greedy Sea Urchins have stolen all of Clu Clu Land’s gold bars and buried them in a series of mazes. As Bubbles, a brave bubble fish, you’ll set out to uncover all of the gold bars in each maze. With 20 stages to complete and increasingly complex conditions (like having to pass over the gold bars twice to uncover them), you might just want to bring along a friend for help.
These three games join classics like Super Mario Bros.™ 3, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda™ and many others, all of which have been enhanced with online features.
Nintendo Switch Online members also have access to the free-to-download software Tetris® 99 as a special offer. The game includes online events like the Tetris 99 MAXIMUS CUP events.
Other features of the Nintendo Switch Online service include online play and Save Data Cloud backup in compatible games, plus a smartphone app that enhances features of supported games.
The Nintendo Switch Online app now includes Smash World, a new service for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimategame. With Smash World, players can use a mobile device to view recommended gameplay videos and download custom stages created in the game’s Stage Builder mode directly to their game, providing more ways than ever before to share their Super Smash Bros. I’m still waiting for an ACTUAL reason/offer to keep my Nintendo Online because at this point I will cancel the subscription as soon as my 12 months have passed. Completely useless to me so far.
Only that hardly any one really wants them over SNES games. Why are we not getting what everybody wants AND what was announced way back when Switch Online was announced
It’s a bit of a disappointment that it’s only nes games at present, and the majority of gamers that were not even born around these original releases are going to struggle to get into them.
They are still however what made Nintendo today and they should be appreciated for what they are.
I’m sure SNES games will come sooner or later, but at present your paying the equivalent of 38pence a week so you can enjoy the main online experience like smash and Mario kart and the upcoming Mario maker which is the main reason why we all have the subscription in the first place.
It’ll eventually get better in time, but for now ‘ it ain’t all that bad’.
The way I see it; This is a service that if continued, it will eventually get good. There’s only so many NES games they can bring to the service before they have no choice but to move to SNES and beyond.
The only way this could stay bad is if they straight up stop supporting it after the NES games are over but given how SNES would be easy to bring over, at the very least I can see them moving to that. As for N64 and beyond, that’s where I honestly don’t know but I really hope they do as there’s plenty of gems in there.
Or Nintendo will take away all the games for the Switch 2 and charge us again for their next service

While I have no doubt Nintendo will charge us for online in all future consoles, as for whether or not they will restart the process is yet to be seen. Can’t really base judgement on a company for things they ain’t even done.
Wow! 40 NES games! All of those games over the course of like 9 months! $20 certainly well spent!! No regrets! At! ALL!

Sure you might not even want the majority of those games.
I don’t use it that much, but I can think of more than 5 games i have played out of all of them and some I am still going to play.
Now you might argue how you already have those games on VC on some other console. So what?
Those games are still there for you to enjoy and you are not forced to pay for NSO.
How about I just pay $5 to own Punch-Out on my Switch forever and not have to pay a subscription service that won’t exist a few years from now. And the fact that the only offerings this service has is 40 NES games over the span of nearly a year is pretty pathetic.
Maybe if they added SNES games to that line up at a faster pace that might be an worthwhile improvement, but even then, I would much rather pick and buy the ones I want.
It works for the Playstation, it works for XBOX, it’s worked for the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U. It should work now.
If you want punch-out, you can probably get it to keep on Wii, Wii U or 3DS.
For me personally, since I do not care to own any of these games, having this service to play some of them when I get bored is good enough for me.
That’s fair. But then there’s the difference between us. I would rather own the games I like on the Switch, the current portable console, but I don’t have an option to do that. Simple as that.
