Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair adds easier Lair difficulty and full chiptune soundtrack

The excellent 2D platformer Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair can get challenging, especially the Impossible Lair itself. Playtonic, the developers behind the game, have announced that they are making it a tad easier with an update tomorrow, Tuesday, 14th April. The team says that each section in the Impossible Lair now ends with a checkpoint which will save your best “Bee Shield score”. It should be noted that the checkpoints are entirely optional if you are looking for a tougher challenge. Playtonic also say that the “Golden Try” Tonic can be acquired if you play through without Bee Shield and don’t use Checkpoints. You don’t need a new save file to achieve this. There will also be a special 8-bit soundtrack which can be found in the pause menu. This will all be available when the update drops tomorrow.

  1. I didnt even know the hame was already out. I love a devloper that makes games immediately instead of waiting 9 years. I bet they got a trio in R&D already.

  2. I’m not super familiar with how the game is structured, but this sounds like a very poor way to design an optional difficulty curve. If you could select “easy” or “normal” at the start which would add or remove the checkpoints would be one thing, but calling it an optional difficulty is just a lie. They made the game easy mode. Sure, you can technically avoid getting the check points, but that’s an optional player made challenge now, not an actual component of the game. It isn’t any different than claiming you “added” a new difficulty “option” to Yoshi’s Wooly World. See, if the player ties one hand behind their back, that makes it hard. That’s a difficulty setting right?

I wouldn’t have necessarily opposed an easy setting, but that’s not what this is. Adding 20 more Bonfires to dark souls is not an optional difficulty setting because technically you don’t have to use them, its just making the entire game easier.

    1. You explained exactly how I felt about this. Hopefully it is under some easy mode instead of being built into level itself; I was really surprised when I found out how difficult the Impossible Lair was even after I got every single bee (they give you an additional hit in the level), so seeing it be dumbed down is a little sad. At the very least if it does get built into the level itself, I already beat the game on its harder difficulty

    2. I think it may function similarly to some tonics already in the game. If you haven’t played the game yet, there are two optional tonics that affect the checkpoints found in any standard level- one that adds more to a level while reducing the number of quills you earn in said level, and one that takes some out of said level but rewards you with a quill multiplier of you finish the level. There might be another that removes checkpoints entirely but I’m not sure, it’s been awhile since I played the game. I wonder if this new checkpoint system for the eponymous Impossible Lair will be applied and treated in a similar fashion.
