Video: Sonic has some wild action moves in Sonic Frontiers

sonic the hedgehog in the upcoming sonic frontiers

IGN has delivered a new Sonic Frontiers gameplay video showing how the combat works in the spiky blue hedgehog’s latest open world adventure. Sonic has a number of powerful new moves at his disposal and admittedly some of the attacks looked immensely fun with satisfying results. The footage revealed that the enemies that Sonic faces in the game aren’t exactly pushovers, with some requiring a number of techniques to defeat and a few rings were lost. The end of the video sees Sonic take on one of the huge metallic defensive towers which delivered a number of heavy attacks which Sonic has to avoid so as to not incur massive damage. The combat looked pretty smooth in the video and isn’t as basic as one would have thought, which is certainly promising. Still, it was a little strange to not see the colourful enemies Sonic generally faces off against in prior Sonic games. Check out the combat in Sonic Frontiers in the tweet below.

  1. The combat system looks really promising and Sonic just pull off some Breath of the wild dodging action in the game which is a little interesting.

I know it’s not the final build in the game yet, but this is a nice performance for a demo in Sonic Frontiers. I hope they show off another trailer this month that shows Sonic friends and a few other areas.

  2. Some of the attacks are quite cool, but personally I still find the combat animations pretty stiff to say the least.

  3. So the gameplay loop is run a circle around your opponent, attack, repeat until it’s defeated.

It’s also not too promising that they repeated the first two enemies.

Maybe I’m in the minority. Idk. I just don’t think this game looks fun yet.

    1. Looking online earlier it seems to be a very divisive game. Some people think it should be delayed/canceled and some are fairly excited.

      1. The combat seems decent enough (although it makes me think SEGA took another page from DBZ), but a lot of the enemies seemed like damage sponges.

Overall: I am not overly hyped for this game, but I will probably like it more than Forces or Lost World. I will probably wait for it to go on sale before buying it.

      2. Yeah like that combat looks like it’ll get boring pretty quick I feel like I might avoid these things or use spindash and one of the specials to take them out did they ever mention when the next vid on frontiers will be?

        1. Yeah, they didn’t mention it yet honestly. I don’t know any of the IGN employees social media accounts, but I’m pretty sure they are gonna reveal another trailer maybe next week or at the end of June since we didn’t see any sign of Eggman and other Sonic characters that are mention in the game and I still want them to show us some small cutscene about the game story.

    2. I’m in the same boat. That, combined with sonic assets littered around this world doesn’t make this game seem like you have to do much to control the game

  4. Just looks really underwhelming and bland also open world where the life? At least add some animals just looks really generic and bland i don’t have high hopes for this one

  5. This looks fine i’ll go ahead and assume that things will look tighter and less stiff by the time this game is released, but Even with that I have my concerns.
I’m with a few other people here that are worried the combat will get tedious. I’m reserving most of my judgments due to the fact that we haven’t seen everything yet. But nothing so far has made me very excited, Part of me does hope that this is delayed.

  6. I’m not sure what people were expecting for combat….. its Sonic the hedgehog? Combat in most sonic games is “jump at them once”. It isn’t Devil May Cry.

In the context of a platformer, how the enemies placed next to each other changes your movement to create an overall flow through the level matters a lot more than how you defeat any particular one of them.

As for the complaints of emptiness, they’re correct…… if in fact this is representative of the final product. Which we obviously won’t know until there’s a final product.

I dunno, honestly this all reminds me of when Elden Ring gameplay trailers were dropping and people were flipping out that they had reused assets from Dark Souls Remastered in it. Game’s lazy trash, they just copy pasted they said. Then in the final product, the reused assets had all been swapped out, so none of the panic mattered in the slightest.

Who knows, the final game might be trash, but I don’t see how you come to that conclusion based on these videos. All the things that are lacking are the things you would expect to be lacking in a sneak peak at an unfinished project. Frankly I expect it to be delayed anyway. It isn’t even on Sega’s own website yet.

    1. That’s just the thing this is Sega here we’re talking about alot of people felt the same way with forces and look how most of the fans got burned, at this point sonic team saving grace is this game, they can’t really fumble this one with bad and broken or mediocre cause if this one has the same result as forces or lost world I have a feeling it’ll be hard to convince most of the fanbase that their actually confident in making a decent/fun looking game.

    2. “I’m not sure what people were expecting for combat….. its Sonic the hedgehog? Combat in most sonic games is “jump at them once”. It isn’t Devil May Cry.”

Sonic isn’t even doing what Sonic does. Sonic team loves experimenting with sonic and combat, giving him a sword, turning him into a werehog, giving him super powers, and attacking on a flying surfboard. To correct your statement, No one knows what to expect in sonic combat until the game comes out. We all got a taste of what it looks like at least.

“In the context of a platformer, how the enemies placed next to each other changes your movement to create an overall flow through the level matters a lot more than how you defeat any particular one of them.”

This isn’t really considered much of a platformer now. There are some elements of the rails, floating platforms and giant bosses but none of them seem necessary. It’s become a mash up of “puzzles”, RPG, Action/Adventure, and open world. How enemies are placed has become just as important with their interaction with the world and how you defeat them should use a combination of that worlds features and your skills as a player, as well as sonics understanding of the world he’s in.

“people were flipping out that they had reused assets from Dark Souls Remastered in it.”

Yeah but the situation seems flipped here. The main people complaining about that were souls game veterans. I was new to elden ring and because I never played a souls game before, it looked new. That being said, I don’t mind old assets being reused so long as the setting and character matches and it looks worth the money I spent. As we know about sonic, most of the hardcore fans have declared that they don’t care about how it looks and enjoy sonic for what it is, where as most of the complaints come from casual sonic players and passersby who got burned playing a sonic game before or someone just stumbling across the trailer because it was trending on youtube. I don’t think this is a valid comparison and more of an excuse to stop people from making valid complaints. Another point on top of that is that reused textures aren’t the same as abundantly pointless sonic assets all over the world

“I don’t see how you come to that conclusion based on these videos. All the things that are lacking are the things you would expect to be lacking in a sneak peak at an unfinished project. Frankly I expect it to be delayed anyway.”

They come to these conclusions because thanks to previous sonic games, They’ve been burned for expecting “too much”. Sonic forces fans were promised a more serious game with tons of action and what not. Character creation was the next big thing and everyone wanted that but the execution, as usual, was horrible. The game was a boring, easy mess with no care put into it besides the cutscenes. It’s clear to see the concern, because showing off your gameplay with all these problems this late into development isn’t good. It’s not an “early build of the game” the game is practically nearing release. Changes are still possible but not enough to fix these mistakes, the game was already delayed once and we are seeing the fruit of their efforts now, which doesn’t look too promising, in fact looks similar to sonic 06. It LOOKS okay but when are Sonic fans actually going to stand up for themselves and not accept poor quality games? Every time I watch a video about a sonic fan defending Frontiers or sonic games in general, they all admit that they do not care for game design and like sonic for what it is. That fine and well, however, don’t forget you’re paying full price for these bad game designs. You do not have a right in saying sonic forces or any other bad sonic game is bad and boring if you say thing like “I dont care about game design” or “I don’t care if the game is bad, I just really like sonic” Being okay with things being this bad and are fine with giving money to a company that can’t put forth the time and effort to make something worth it’s price. It may look good compared to previous sonic games but that bar has been set far too low in my opinion. You can make a sonic game that maintains all of sonics core elements, but actually operates in more enjoyable, playable way that doesn’t have half-assed attack animations, rails and floating platforms that offer seemingly no incentive to use, baby tier puzzles that offer no challenge or barely use sonics traits to solve and easy/tedious bosses and enemies that require little or no thought when fighting.

  7. looks like to me they just tried to add sonic to a random game development game. looks more like a demo than anything. combat is boring as shit. in fact it made me sleepy so to you lovely blokes have a good night.
