Update: Turns it was nothing. The ‘leaker’ also deleted his Twitter account. Now we wait…

Another video game leaker says that we should expect news regarding the next wave of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Booster Course Pack later today. In a recent tweet the Twitter user said that Nintendo will reveal all at 3pm UK time / 7am PT this afternoon. As with any rumours we shall have to wait and see what transpires, but nailing down a date and time for the announcement means we won’t have to wait long to find out.

  1. I’ve really got to take my hat off to Nintnedo. The way they’ve kept this game alive over 7 or 8 years, the game is consistently in top 10 sales and it still looks amazing vusually. There’s no need to release MK9 until Switch 2.

    1. The visuals are way, way worse in the DLC courses though. I really don’t like games as a service and would much prefer Mario Kart 9 over rather simple ports of courses.

      1. MK9 was NEVER going to come to switch, we get 1 MK a generation because the game sells forever, and releasing another would cannibalize sales… it has been 5 years and it is still a top seller, and still at $60… MAYBE if it hadn’t sold as well because it was port they would have done 9, but within the first few months it was clear the switch would never get another MK. They will give us 9 as a launch window game for the switch’s successor, and it will probably be even more polished than 8D. So the idea of “I don’t want this because it isn’t 9″… we were never going to get 9 on switch

        1. That’s some nice circumstantial evidence ya got there, but do you have anything more concrete?

Saying “they did it this way before therefore they can’t deviate from it” is not concrete at all.

          1. I can help you. Nintendo is a business that sells video game hardware and software for profit. One of their ongoing goals is to decrease development costs and maximize sales. They achieve this by letting Mario Kart 8 Dx be the only MK on the Swtich vs the cost of developing a new game. This is supported by the evidence of the consistent sales numbers of MKDx, the game still being full priced, and that they have announced DLC for the next two (iiirc?) years.

It’s pretty much common sense… which, to be fair, is sometimes NOT what Nintendo does. But it’s pretty consistent for keeping “evergreen titles” for their current system.

            1. That’s a good answer, though I was mostly speaking from a stance opposed to the idea that it could never release on Switch purely because MK8D was on Switch already. Before the DLC was announced it wasn’t impossible for MK9 to release on Switch (see also Splatoon 3 exists), but now that they’ve made it apparent that they’re focusing on MK8D still there’s no more logic for MK9 to exist.

Oh but I do have one slight counterpoint to the idea that MK9 would cannibalize MK8D sales. Not saying wouldn’t, but instead it wouldn’t matter: purely in terms of sales, if MK9 existed there would be people who bought MK8D who would purchase MK9 on top of those who would buy MK9 instead of MK8D. Granted this is a moot point with MK8D DLC existing, but if it didn’t they’d theoretically make more money from a new entry instead.

Though now I’m curious, if money was the end all factor for MK8D DLC existing over MK9, why bundle it with the NSO expansion pass? I’m in a family plan with friends and so Nintendo didn’t get a single dollar from me purely from the DLC existing but would have if MK9 existed instead, and I know I’m not the only one who did this. Well, that’s just some small food for thought I suppose.

          2. He’s just talking out of his ass. MK8 was a Wii U title, so MK9 would naturally be on Switch, not Switch 2. But because the Wii U port sells so well there is no need for MK9 just yet. The developers were and are probably working on MK9 but Nintendo told them to make more DLC while sales are high and pushed back a potential release of MK9 to Switch 2. Nintendo does not have fix dates for releases. They make a game and then decide when to release it. With Starfox 2 they never released it, even though it was finished. And the Advance Wars remake is also finished and waiting for a release. I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo could release MK9 within a year, but there is no reason to, so they won’t.

          3. “They did it this way before, and it’s making them a mint” is pretty convincing circumstantial evidence. A company as conservative as Nintendo is not going to fix something that very much isn’t broken.

            1. This is a non sequitur. We’re not talking about the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality here

      2. Quit complaining. The graphics are not as bad as you’re making it out to be. It’s brighter. So what? You’re getting 48 new courses, and all you can do is whine about nothing. People still play MK8. It makes no sense to put a new MK on the Switch seeing that this game is still one of the most played. They’re better off waiting til the next system to put out MK9.

        1. There’s quite an obvious downgrade, actually. Look at tracks like DS Cheep Cheep Beach or Mount Wario and then look at the DLC tracks like 3DS Toad Circuit and DS Shroom Ridge- the courses look like they’re made of plastic in the DLC tracks. Seriously, the grass and off-road spots aren’t even textured. So when you go from a base-game track to a DLC track, it’s hard not to notice the significant drop in quality.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want the DLC tracks to have a bit better graphical quality than how the first wave looked.

      3. Do you EVER stop complaining about every tiny thing? They could put every course ever made and some new ones, and you would still cry about it. It’s just brighter, so what? MK9 will be on the next system. No sense to put a new one when Deluxe is one of the best games on the Switch.

  2. So combining this with the earlier rumour, could we be expecting an F-Zero inspired track to show up in the booster? Only thing is, pretty sure the booster is only supposed to contain old tracks and the only F-Zero tracks I’m aware of in Mario Kart are the ones already included in MK8D. But hey, just in case an F-Zero track is announced later, I’m putting it here just so I can say I called it.

  3. Regardless of all these rumors and speculations, wave 2 should release before the end of July anyway. Since it’s 6 waves, a release every 4 months seems to be consensus so we just gotta be patient.

  4. It’s pretty clear that they initially had Wave 2 planned for June, so hopefully they’re using this extra time to polish the visuals a bit more to make them fit better with the rest of the game (since people complained about that in Wave 1).

Still, they’ve got 5 waves left that they promised to release before the end of 2023, so they really only have like 3 extra months (well, 2 months now) total they could use assuming they do one wave reveal per direct (or when a direct would’ve normally been…)
