The developers behind the indie hit roguelite Dead Cells has announced that not only has the game shifted 10 million copies since its launch in early access on Steam in 2017, but that they will be providing updates to game until 2025. So far the game has had a whopping 34 free updates and later launches on mobile have all helped to drive long-tail success in all major global territories, pushing the game into rarely charted sales territory for an independent title.
Dead Cells’ amazing list of free updates include chunky content additions that have provided new ways for fans to play the game, numerous weapon & item additions & enhancements, extra levels, a host of enemies and large crossover events featuring popular characters from other high profile indie games such as Hotline Miami, Shovel Knight and more. Dead Cells’ well-received four paid DLCs – including the groundbreaking recent Return to Castlevania DLC, which featured an unprecedented collaboration with Konami – have also continued to drive development on the title.
Following the success of Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania, Evil Empire has been exploring the path forward for the title as a whole. With years of successful updates and expansions behind it after taking over live ops of Dead Cells in 2019, the studio is tinkering with its time-tested methodology, experimenting with ideas for future updates and new ways for fans to enjoy one of their favorite roguelikes.
With numerous award wins after launching in 2018, including Best Indie Game at 2018’s Golden Joystick Awards, Best Action Game at 2018’s The Game Awards and Best Indie Game at 2018’s New York Game Awards, Dead Cells has continued to grow with new meaningful content, attracting more and more players to its challenging and gripping dungeon crawling fun along the way.

Yes i love this game. Is great. I buy three physical versions. Ps4, switch and big prissoners edition. But i think actual is too much dlcs. I buy all dlc but dead cells need definitive edition with serious ending. Bank level map still not work normal, mirror in main hál still dont work normal. This game must stop! Better idea is creating dead cells 2 or prequel. With better graphics and less but better ballanced weapons. And i hate too many outfits. I beat 5bc many times and obtain everything but outfits without power effects is for nothing!
Okay now they’re just milking this game to death, after this I’m done because this is beginning to look like a live service game at this point and I don’t do live service.
It’s really not like that. All the paid DLC have been significant editions that could have been justifiably sold as sequels. DLC is a viable alternative to direct sequels, and it shouldn’t be considered a “live service” just because they’re doing a lot of it. If you don’t want to spend more money, just don’t buy the updates that cost money. They still keep updating the balance and adding a ton of free content that none of the DLC is required for.
Im cool with this. In fact I like it a lot.
