Activision had meeting with Nintendo president in December, Switch 2 similar in power to Xbox One & PS4

More information has come to light about Activision and Nintendo and the next generation platform which sounds very much like a Nintendo Switch 2 and is widely expected to launch in 2024. The Verge reports today that the Activision heads met with Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa and other executives in a conference call back in December 2022 to talk about the successor to the Nintendo Switch console. The news was shared in new redacted documents which played apart in the Xbox deal to acquire Activision Blizzard. Nintendo’s next generation console was described as closer to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One performance.

“Activision executives, including CEO Bobby Kotick, met with Nintendo executives in December 2022 to discuss a next-generation Switch. In an internal email chain, Chris Schnakenberg, head of Activision’s platform strategy and partner relations, prepared a summary of the “Switch NG” (Switch next-generation) inside a document labeled “NG Switch Draft.pdf.”

“The document is heavily redacted, but it does reveal that performance of the next-generation Switch will be close to that of the PS4 and Xbox One:”

“Given the closer alignment to Gen8 platforms in terms of performance and our previous offerings on PS4 / Xbox One, it is reasonable to assume we could make something compelling for the NG Switch as well. It would be helpful to secure early access to development hardware prototypes and prove that out nice and early.”

  1. Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if it were closer to last gen especially because that’s the kind of power all these PC handhelds like the Steam Deck are targeting. It’ll be a tad better than the PS4 if things like DLSS are included allowing us to upscale to 4K and possibly faster loading times if they pack it with SSD storage. But the heart of the machine will likely be closer to a PS4 if its another hybrid making it essentially a handheld even if it can be docked.

  2. It’s been a year…. The development of a console is continuous, it can be very different now from what Activision executives have supposedly learned….

      1. I don’t care about the handheld part never use it. Also not sure what you mean with on par with current gen. Ps4 was released in 2013?

        1. To those disappointed by this, I am legitimately interested: how long have you been following Nintendo? The last time they were “current gen” was the GameCube. I am very pleased by this.

    1. Switch is more powerful than the Switch but it doesn’t come any where near the PS4 in power, so I’d say around a 4 or 5.

Switch NG is definitely on par with the PS4 and maybe even the PS4 Pro when docked due to DLSS 3.1, just don’t expect like PS5 or Xbox Series graphics, though even then, those graphics are pretty… eh of a difference.

    2. If Wii U is a 1 and PS4 is a 10, then the Switch is probably a 3. But to be fair the Wii U was a dedicated gaming console tethered to the wall and the Switch is also a handheld. Sure it can be docked, but it still has to play all its games on the go too which is why it was so impressive upon its debut. It clearly plays games the Wii U couldn’t like Tears of the Kingdom and Doom 2016 for example.

No doubt the Switch 2 even if its best compared to the PS4/X-Box One will be a major leap in power compared to the Switch. Also if they incorporate things like DLSS and SSD we can have upscaled 4K and fast load times and there’s even rumors it can do ray tracing. These features will make the Switch more impressive than the PS4 even if the power it runs at is still comparable to a PS4.

      1. Of course the Wii U could play games Tears of the Kingdom and Doom. The Switch in handheld mode is a Wii U, if not slightly weaker. So anything on Switch would also be possible on Wii U. The only reason TOTK looks better than BOTW is because of AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, which wasn’t available to Nintendo back then.

  3. I call it, the Switch NG will be on par with a PS4 when docked (Slightly closer to PS4 Pro) and when undocked it’s closer to the Xbox One S (Slightly better chip in the S). With DLSS 3.1, I can see the chip running pretty well

  4. Now I do hope for some different things. Because of course it was clear that a new gen will guts be a step up from last gen so PS3/XB360-era Switch won’t suddenly be jumping to PS5-era Switch 2. There are some factors that are still more important for a portable. Like the price or the powerconsumption. Nintendo still targets families first and won’t kneel for some incels comparing specs. And why should they? I mean if you’re so into getting the fastest and latest system and give a fuck about it eating 10 times the energy a Switch does, why should you even care about a portable system at all?

  5. I hope it’s more powerful. I’m sick of Nintendo doing this with tech. I want the system to be on par with the newest tech.

    1. If it’s also a handheld, there’s no way it’ll be comparable to the PS5 unless they charge $600+ for the device. And knowing Nintendo’s track record they’ll want to keep it affordable for the general audience. Things like DLSS, SSD storage, and raytracing will help it to feel more modern than a PS4, but don’t expect top of the line visuals and performance. It’ll be a huge step up from the Switch and honestly that’ll be a huge win in my book.

      1. Not in my Book because by the time the New Nintendo Console comes out say December next year the other consoles will be four years old and about ready to be replaced by even more Powerful Devices. Stop Defending Nintendo being Cheap with Hardware and two Generations behind. It hurts Gamers as a whole but you wouldn’t be able to wrap your heads around that. I want Nintendo Games at their full potential and with Modern Specs and Features, more 3rd Party Support with Physical Media that can actually fit the entire game on it, and I want same day Releases and all the 3rd Party games that come to everything else and not be extremely watered down and held back. I want normal voice chat and other modern features and comforts as well.

        1. The Steam Deck will only be 2 years old by the time the Switch 2 is rumored to launch. Most other handheld PCs releasing these days are about the same as the Deck roughly comparable to the PS4. I’m not defending Nintendo, nor do I wish to see the same late game limitations as the Switch is currently struggling with. I’m just looking at past Nintendo’s history and what is currently available as top of the line portability.

Nintendo likes to make their devices affordable and they like to make a profit off each device they sell. Most of their competition (Sony, Microsoft, and Valve) are okay with selling their devices at a loss with the hope they can make a profit off of software, accessories and so-on. They just want you in their ecosystem, where Nintendo wants the extra dollar upfront often times making their hardware behind the times.

The Steam Deck was sold at a loss when it launched as stated above to get a wider array of consumers in their ecosystem. So if the Steam Deck is roughly 2.5 years old by the time the the Switch 2 launches, the parts to build a portable of roughly the same power will be more affordable and Nintendo can make a profit. Also, the Steam Deck also doubles as a Linux based computer where the Switch 2 is a dedicated gaming platform further allowing the production of the hardware to be cheaper to make.

The notion that Nintendo would make a portable that’s closer to the PS5 in raw power is laughable to me as they would either have to charge an amount that wouldn’t be favorable to the general public or change their mindset and sell the device at a major loss. And even if this happened, the battery life would be horrendous. As one who owns a Steam Deck, it lasts less than 2 hours when maxing everything out. I get that as a dedicated gaming platform it’ll probably do better running a game with similar specs, but if the performance is comparable to a PS5 and it has the same 5,000 mAh battery then high profile games will last a little over an hour (and that’s probably being generous). I suppose you could make it as big as a freaking laptop to fit a bigger battery in, but you get my sarcasm…

          1. Since the Gamecube days, Nintendo noticed power was not so important to sales, as the NGC was not the most sold console during that gen even though it was one of the most powerful consoles in the market. So they had the idea to bring entertainment beyond graphics with the Wii.

Yes, they don’t sell the console at a loss, but even though the consoles are substantially not as potent as the competition, the price is also supposed to cover the other tech they use, like HD rumble, touchscreen, built-in camera on the Joycon. Basically, as an example, the Switch has the features I listed and is not as graphical capable as the others, however, the others may have good graphics but lack the features the Switch has. So, at the end of the day the price is balanced and reasonable.
