The latest edition of the popular Japanese gaming magazine, Weekly Famitsu, is now with subscribers, and this week’s edition contains the first published review of Sonic Superstars. The four reviewers gave the game four 8/10s, which means the total score for the latest 2D Sonic adventure is 32/40. Considering the high review scores Famitsu normally gives out, this could be seen as slightly concerning, though we won’t know for sure until the embargo on the game lifts. Here are all the reviews from issue 1819:
- DRIFTCE (PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One) – 7/7/7/7 [28/40]
- Passpartout 2: The Lost Artist (Switch) – 7/8/8/7 [30/40]
- PAYDAY 3 (PS5, Xbox Series) – 8/7/8/7 [30/40]
- Sonic Superstars (PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One, Switch) – 8/8/8/8 [32/40]

Personally I don’t put value in Famitsu’s reviews anymore.
By comparisons, here are their scores for a few earlier Sonic titles:
Sonic Forces: 35/40
Sonic Mania: 32/40
Sonic Colors Ultimate: 34/40
Sonic Frontiers: 36/40
That’s interesting, sonic mania is by far the best of these games, yet it has the lowest score.
I think superstars looks solid and I expect il enjoy it.
Maybe I am being too optimistic, but seeing these scores actually makes me feel hopeful for Sonic superstars: I really do wanted to succeed so that the Sonic hype train can keep on rolling 🤩
