By now, you’re more than likely aware of the massive Game Freak leak that happened last weekend. The leak was so large that, even though it is a week later, people are still sorting through its contents. Not only has the leak revealed stuff relating to more recent Pokemon games, but there were details discovered for Pokemon titles that released a decade ago.
For example, there has been another feature from Pokemon X and Y, released in 2013, that had been recently discovered. It turns out that, at one point in development, Pokemon X and Y were going to have the ability for players to create and share their own custom gyms. You can see a social media post relaying the news down below.

So, I guess the “conquer gyms” mechanic inspired the one from Pokémon Go.
This is a huge missed opportunity. Even as a kid I’ve always wanted the chance to have a main line game where you could choose a Pokémon type, create a Gym, make a gym badge, have NPCs challenge you, and either have people fight your gym online or challenge other people’s gym online.
Pokemon X definitely in my top 10 of regret video game purchases.
That would have been awesome! What a shame that was never included in the final game(s).
Pokemon X was one of my best favorite Pokemon games that I purchased after launch. I can’t believe I lost it after beating the game. 😭
Pokemon X and Y, in my opinion, was the generation of Pokemon where the games and company decisions started to fall off.
Never got around to playing Sun and Moon. The Ruby and Sapphire remakes didn’t do it for me. Diamond and Pearl remakes didn’t do it for me. Legends of Arceus was not polished enough.
I enjoyed a lot of Scarlet and Violet, but even that game could have been more polished.
Hopefully, the Pokemon company has trained its employees better and has been scaling back the amount of projects it has to focus on making more quality games going forward. I would like to see some big changes for the next generation and really see Pokemon the way it is meant to be with polished visuals, sound mechanics, and innovative gameplay.
