Wii U Daily recently got the opportunity to speak to a Nintendo representative about Wii U on the E3 show floor. The representative told the site that the playable Wii U games at the show, including Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros U and Nintendo Land will run at 720p. The representative said that while Pikmin 3 will be 720p, the game will run at a super-smooth 60 frames per second.

Is it _that_ hard to do 1080p?
not even 10% of the games released on PS3 and Xbox 360 are 1080p
they’re all lower resolution upscaled to fit the screen resolution.
Most games’ native resolutions aren’t even 720p
Actually, I’m pretty sure no major 360 or PS3 game is 1080p. Some are outputted in 1080p, like Gran Turismo 5 or Metal Gear Solid 4, but they’re rendered on lower resolutions (like 960p, for example).
But still, I’m a bit annoyed by this. I know Wii U can handle 1080p, and those games really aren’t that intensive. Hope this will change for the later titles.
Don’t worry dude. The HD games will come. Maybe from Retro. If they could make Metroid Prime the best looking game of the 6th gen on GC hardware, imagine what they could do with the Wii U.
Yeah, I know. They will come soon, but I just hope they do sooner rather than later.
These games probably started being developed for early Wii U devkits (and for Pikmin 3, Wii), and we know the final version of the system got more power than what they started with.
Check out the link to the Trine 2 screenshots I posted on this page.
No, you’re pretty wrong. Quite a number of PS3 *even 360* games can do full HD.
But what do I expect someone with a Mii avatar to know.
No. Most PS3 games that are outputted in 1080p are either less intensive PSN titles, PS2 HD ports or rendered at a lower resolution and then upscaled to 1080p. Do your research.
No, do YOUR research. Head to the Beyond3D forums and they have huge lists of every available HD console game and their resolutions. And a few of them are performing at 1080p NATIVELY. You’re implying NONE of them were. That’s what you basically said.
Don’t try to tell me otherwise–a PC gamer, to do my fucking research when you obviously don’t, Wiitard.
What the fuck. Go to the forums you just mentioned and notice that the only major PS3 game to run in 1080p is Gran Turismo 5, and even then it sacrifices anti-aliasing in order to do so. The others are all simpler games. So fuck you. You should get out of these comment sections and free us of your stupidity.
So you basically confirmed you haven’t read shit if that’s the only game you see running in 1080p.
Nice going, because there are well over a dozen in that list, you moron.
Now, kiss
Actually almost all multi-console games on the 360 and ps3 run at 720, exclusives are usually the ones that get 1080
Yeah, but this isn’t the same generation as PS360. Not too weird to ask for.
meh…. time will change and wii u will be ready by that time, just wait.
just like reggie’s body.
”I feel like a purple Pikmin”
It doesn’t really matter since the DS and Wii didn’t run at either and have outsold the current
Gen systems
The fact that you’re comparing the WiiU’s power with those two and point out that it’s not significantly better than them gives me the feeling that you don’t even consider the WiiU as next-gen. Because doing that what you just did means nothing else but exactly that. If the WiiU can’t prove from the very beginning that it is better than the current gen the people will have every single right to not accept it as next-gen. I mean, after 6 years they should be able to be significantly stronger than the others, shouldn’t they… ? Anyway, I don’t know about you and everyone else but in my opinion Nintendo is currently wasting every single chance to impress the audience.
well, 1080p is 2.25x higher res, so maybe the hardware is stopping them from going full 1080p :/
It’s more time than hardware, the hardware lets them do 1080p 60fps no prob, (with 1 GamePad), it’s just there wasn’t time to fit them. :)
Exactly. Plus as ‘Naner’ mentioned above, the final dev-kits were not exactly available at the beginning of development for the games shown at E3/available at launch.
Remember too, that it has been said by Nintendo that even though WiiU has no problem running 1080p/60fps, not every game released on WiiU will make use of it when it is not completely necessary. [Or something along those lines.] Would 1080p/60fps be a requirement to play and enjoy ‘World of Goo’? It costs money to develop at that visual level so there is not reason to include it with every single game when it is not essential to do so.
Once every Developer (who is on-board with Nintendo) has received final dev-kits and given time to create, then the goods will start pouring in. E3 2013 should be one of the best yet and I have great expectations.
i doubt you can spot the difference, your cable box only delivers 720p
I just hope those 720p60 games come with 4xAA enabled by default.
Otherwise, FullHD TV owners like myself will start the next generation with jaggie-infested games.
I’m out on the Wii U launch. That is pathetic.
yet ps3 and xbox cant do that….
PS3 and 360 are 7th gen. This is EIGHTH gen. I’m not saying I’m skipping out on launch, but I’m not even surprised. Nintendo is always behind on hardware. That’s why their third party support was so poor for the Wii. It’s too soon to say how third parties will treat the WiiU once the next Sony and Microsoft systems are out though, but if they surpass WiiU specs, Nintendo is going to suffer from third-parties moving over to the better hardware for higher capabilities.
or not… since the gap is much closer now. Do u rly think sony will release a 600 dollar/pound console again after their huge losses and not willing to lower the vita?
thats would be stupid consider an article a while ago said that sony products will never be cheap so a ps4 will likely be $500-$800.
Yes they can, stop bullshitting yourself.
don’t be a graphics whore. it’s bad for your gaming experiences
DOWN WITH GRAPHICS!!!
Hey look it’s a wiitard with his gamecube graphics
funny because U just act like patcher; nobody here takes U seriously, so why are U even trying.
Your loss. You’ll come back eventually.
Don’t lie to yourselves, you guys know you wanted 1080p. No point in trying to act like you’re better than everyone else.
the key thing they said was 60fps. virtually no game on current gen consoles run any game at 60fps. and trust me, the fps is a lot more noticeable than the resolution.
^^this i agree on.
LOL? Then what the hell is Uncharted 3 running at? Or GT5? Or even freaking CoD? List can go on and on, by the way. So don’t tell ME those games aren’t 60 fps, OR the ones I’m playing now, for that matter.
A lot of those games are running 30fps bro including uncharted just google it. It’s not a super big deal though 30fps is more then playable.
i did my research those are indeed 30fps games
they are not. litereally the only game that is running at 60 fps on consoles is call of duty because it is running on such an outdated engine and i don’t even refer to it as a game anymore because of how much they have rehashed it. and , besides call of duty, every game that you are playing on consoles are running at a locked 30 fps.
Gran Turismo 5 -IS- 60FPS, only replays drop to 30 for whatever reason. As is pretty much every Call of Duty.
In any case, there’s a host of other titles to prove you wrong. I know what 60 fps looks like. Never touched Uncharted 3, but didn’t think they’d lie about their frame rate *the gameplay trailers ran at 60fps apparently*.
Hell even games like pretty much every Sonic game on the two relevant consoles are a proven 60 FPS.
So what the hell are you talking about? :/
that’s funny, because i looked up a list of games that run at 60 fps on consoles and the only ones are either from last gen (xbox ps2 gamecube) from 2005 2006 and 2007 or are xbla or psn games, so no gt5 or uncharted were present. so again, no current gen console can run MORE RECENT games at 60fps. satisfied?
Show me this list. I know what 60 fps looks like, bro.
This especially noticeable in fast paced games as well.
Burnout Paradise is 60 FPS, Driver San Francisco is 60 FPS, Wipeout HD is 60 FPS, Super Street Fighter 4 is 60 FPS…list goes ON and on….
Your eyes can’t tell the difference between 30 frames and 60 frames per second bud…
Yes they can you fucking retard. 60 FPS is a very obvious and in your face difference. But chances are all you play is shitty 30 fps ones to begin with.
Hybrid, the summer arcade game for 360 is 720p and 60fps…
http://www.whatishybrid.com/info.html
So if a current gen console can do it, it’s not special…
did you see what i said before? i said that there are a bunch of xbla games that run at 60fps. and on a second thought….why in the hell are you replying to me two months later? like you went digging through tons of different articles just to reply to me saying that one game out of TONS of games actually runs at 60fps. and it is kindof a big deal when ALL launch games are running at 60 fps. since most , MOST, games on current gen systems do not run at 60 fps.
Do your research first before making a statement like that. Even up to now, most PS3 and 360 games run at 720p. Plus, to get a game running at 1080p and 60fps is pretty hard / expensive. It’ll come soon.
So apparently, Reggie said in an interview with IGN, that we will be “pleasantly surprised” with the pricing of Wii U. He went on to say that they have the same ideal image to keep that same price over a long period of time, rather than pricing it high, and lowering it over the next few months. ~This all sounds fantastic to me! Expect a price around $299.99 – $349.99.
Source- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKCyhJ1tyXQ
^Start that source link video at 4:20, you’ll hear Reggie’s great attitude towards pricing, and value. c:
I say $299. That will surprise a lot of people, get the sales numbers up there. It will also put it just above current gen console pricing but under next-gen consoles when they release next year. Nintendo just needs to make sure everyone knows the Wii U is a new system and not just a new controller.
Personally, I’m expecting a 400 hundred price tag just so when they announce the actual price, I will be really pleasantly surprised. C:
I am expecting a price tag anything from $350 and +. Anything below would make me worry that Nintendo isn’t investing too much in it. :P
Yeah, you’re right. Maybe $349 now that I think about it. ;)
that’s totally fine, in fact that’s twice as good as current consoles, because they have games that run at 30fps at 720p
Exactly, if you ask me next gen wont be a “big” jump as last-today gen was, im expecting next year to be 1080p+60fps with no significant jump on “actual” graphics.
with the cost of developing new games, im pretty sure sony and M$ wont do something that would cut most developers (lets me honest, not every dev has activision/ubisoft/EA money)… andif they do, most will find home on the WiiU
exactly. i mean if people are going to get so prudent when it comes to graphics, BUILD A GAMING PC. seriously if you even have a mid range build of a pc right now it totally destroys the 360 and ps3 in terms of graphics.
I agree wholeheartedly, this next gen won’t be too much of a gap, Sony is 6 bil down. Anyways, we’ll get those first party’s in HD soon enough & everything will be fine
720p is hd. so yeah don’t worry about it too much
“This gen won’t be too much of a gap”
lol damage control is cute, MS/Sony have plenty of time and money to craft a true next gen console and Wii U will be left in the dust with it’s last gen graphics.
It’s funny watching fanboys try to play the analyst role, just letting you know what a GTX 680 costs now.
…then try to figure out how much it’ll cost “by then”. Including the lower price for those companies since the cards are outsourced to them for cheaper. HAR HAR.
sorry but my Pc says that sony will be left out in the dust by the time the new M$/Sony consoles are out… and thats why the WiiU looks awesome because most of its games will be different and exclusively (or at least to some extend)
so just like the outdated on release that was the 360/PS3 i expect the same on the next gen, consoles should not be about graphics, if you care about that get a PC… just like that
and yeah, youre the same guy that said that he was a hardcore gamer but waited years to get his PS3 because he could not afford it…. until it was 250… what a misserable fail
I had my PS3 since early 2008, actually. Keep trying to pretend to know about me though.
“Oh, and my PS3 only cost me $250, kekekeke.”
owned
Have they not already confirmed that the console can run 1080p? If so, why can the launch titles not run in it, other than laziness on the developers part?
It may have something to do with how unfamiliar developers would be with the hardware as it’s still new hardware. Games tend to look better overtime on a system.
I can understand the third party titles launching at a lower resolution, especially given most are on other systems as well. You would think though that Nintendo would be able to put a game on their own system at it’s maximum resolution.
And they could do that, but it would take a lot more time than that, and Pikmin 3 is nothing more than a Wii game with better graphics. It was in development for about 5 years, so they can’t rework everything now. Look at what MS and Sony did with their launch games, and look at the graphics they’re pulling out of their systems now. It’s not that simple, and 1080p is definitely not a standard yet, so everyone needs to get used to it. It requires a lot of resources to pull that off.
I think it’s more just the fact that they haven’t had nearly as much time to work on these games as, let’s say, Super Mario Sunshine. They just recently decided to make Pikmin 3 for Wii U (As in a year or so ago), so they haven’t had much time to worry about the graphics. Don’t worry, the Wii U is plenty powerful enough to support 1080p (AC3), and the first party games will have it soon enough.
Does it really matter if it’s 720p or 1080p? I don’t care, at least it is HD. :)
Yes, actually, it does. It’s important to hold things to a standard, otherwise we’re not going to get anywhere.
^ wow just wow
wow +2
wow + 3
wow +4
wow +5
wow +6
Wow, every faggot posting “wow”. Go outside, because your combo was just broken.
Wii U jealous bro?
Agreed. It doesn’t matter to me that the launch games don’t take full advantage of the new system, but games had better eventually start doing so. I don’t even care about the graphics, it’s a matter of principle.
yeah keep in mind people the wii u just started so dont over expect too much yet…
I’m getting more and more disappointed as articles are being posted…
Stop complaining! It will still look good. Plus it’s still hd you will hardly be able to tell a difference. I’m excited I’ve never seen a Nintendo franchise in HD.
You sound like you’ve never seen an HD game before, period. And not being able to tell the difference between SD and HD is supposed to be a bad thing.
For real .Is it bad not being able to tell the difference between 3d too.I can only see it for a few minutes ,then it goes away.
I’m talking about the difference between 720 and 1080p. I’ve been gaming in hd for awhile now and I know you can tell a difference it’s just not a huge one.
Amagine the ZELDA WII U BUT FOR THE AMOUNT OF TIME SKYWARD SWORD WAS I THINK I HAD A ZELDA ORGASM
take a chill pill everyone, the games will be upscaled to 1080p
It will take a little while for the DEVS to push 1080p. Just wait, and I’m sure we’ll all get the goods!
This is about the only thing released at E3 that didn’t disappoint me. 720p is HD which is fine with me. However, due to the lack of of game content, I will sit the launch out until I see reasonable cause that this isn’t a repeat of Wii.
I see people are taking this as a bad thing. Let’s not forget that these are for “launch” games. Most PS360 games don’t even run at 720p, and some go as far as 30fps. The fact that launch games for the system can go that far right off the bat says a lot.
Thing to rember is the game is running at 60fps 720p…..
while running a completely different image to the controller at the same time.
The wiiu can easily do 1080…but not so with two 720p screen running at the same time…even though the tablet isn’t 720p its still another monitor the GPU has to run..
Monitor is 960×640, so HQ, but yeah, pretty high-res too.
They said that the only difference will be a drop from 60fps to 30fps, and only with a second gamepad
WTF Nintendo?
shut up u spoilt nintendo twerp
You Shut the fuck up. I’m the one paying for a Wii U, so if i don’t like what i read i’ll put what i feel. I not like you bitch’s who defend Nintendo no matter what they do. You buy me a Wii U then i won’t say nothing, if not… you can stick your head up your bum and do one.
You made my day. :)
I’m a Sony fanboy and Aeolus, I would appreciate if you stopped hating on nintendo. I like nintendo and Microsoft as well, but the people on this forum are correct about 720p and 30 fps genuinely
Until developers are more familiar with WiiU’s architecture, you’re going to have to deal with this. It will eventually get better, of course, but you will have to wait at least 5 or so months. Then we’ll start seeing what the system is capable of.
I’m still going to buy the Wii U at launch, and i still love the Wii U.
Good for you. I unfortunately won’t be able to, as I need to save my money for a car and some college debts… But once that’s out of the way, epicness, here I come!
Pffffft, COLLEGE
Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think Wii U is being used at even half its full power. I expect better quality games by next year (still hoping for F-zero).
That’s very good. Those 3 games are graphical powerhouses. Those are not the games that will be used to show off the graphical capabilities of the Wii U. Those kinda games ain’t gonna come for a while. Maybe some 3rd party game might get there. Maybe the Aliens game might do it, it’s unlikely, but maybe. Very few games will push the Wii U’s graphics during the launch window.
This is the best looking game I’ve seen for Wii U so far. It’s called Trine 2:Directors Cut. Here’s some screenshots. Leave luck to heaven. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=477074
From a new generation console, I was really hoping for 1080p, but offcourse, these are just first projects. Hopefully later games will feature 1080p.
Here we go, Nintendo retards are now crying that the FIRST games on a BRAND NEW console isn’t in 1080p. It’s the end of the world. I’d never thought I’d get pissed off with my own fanbase. I’m starting to seriously think about changing me name to NintendoCryBaby and start trolling.
Oh no, its not 1080p its the end of the freaking world. Just shut up and play the damn game.
i wonder how purple pikmin will work now that rock pikmin have replaced them
I’m going to guess they’ll still be the go to Pikmin for heavy lifting. Did we see the Rock Pikmin carrying anything? I don’t remember.
Well.. you will just use Reggie
It depends on how the rock Pikmin work. I mostly seen them being used to shatter glass or crystal walls.
I’m just annoyed that the fact that Nintendo has constantly be saying the “Wii U can do 1080p and 60 fps easily” all the time, and now we get this…
Saying a system can do 1080p easily doen’t mean every game on that console will be in 1080p. Don’t expect every Wii U game to be this big graphics powerhous that blows your socks of evertime you see it. You should be more concerned with how they play. On that end you got nothing to worry about.
For me it doesn’t matter since I will be keeping my console at 480p since this HD gimmick is over rated and pricey.
Can you set your console at 1080, 720? or you can only output 480p? If your TV does output 720p above then you might as well up the resolution.
I can, just that I don’t bother with it since I don’t see the benefit going HD.
It’s just isn’t the hassle is my view.
Sharper edges and details and colour and a better view. At least go from 480p to 720p, but up to you.
To everyone bickering about the lack of 1080p:
I don’t know if the Wii U will run 1080p, or if the games will, but remember: these are incomplete products! The final build may very well run 1080p! Granted, I don’t know for a fact, as I don’t work for Nintendo or work with the hardware, but I wouldn’t jump on them for a 720p 60fps demo! Wait until the finished product is out, and THEN see how you feel about it. The only thing you should focus on with incomplete demos is gameplay.
I dont actually care, if you ask me next gen wont be a “big” jump as last-today gen was, im expecting next year to be 1080p+60fps with no significant jump on “actual” graphics (so all we are going to get will be a custom Unreal Engine 4).
with the cost of developing new games, im pretty sure sony and M$ wont do something that would cut out most developers (lets be honest, not every dev has activision/ubisoft/EA money)… andif they do, most will find home on the WiiU (as japanese JRPG dev didi wit the Wii)
I just want good games
You can all try and justify the necessity of 720p on an 8th generation console, but stop. Nintendo, seriously? -_______-
People really think wiiu can’t do NSMBU at 1080p because of hardware limitations? Please, it’s obviously just because it’s new tech…
Damn, this worries me. I’m purchasing the Wii-U but I worry about the long term effects once the PS3 and X-Box gets a new console and have extremely higher specs then the Wii-U.
I think Nintendo has a plan
come late enough to the party for so called hd games. most tv’s out there are not 1080p compatible. I know mine is not its only 1080i but it looks better than alot of 1080p sets.(its 5 yrs old). then Bamm go all out on 4k which will have one standard only not of this hd at various levels crap. 4K should take over in 5-7 yrs time. perfect timing for a 4k console. If you have not seen a 4k TV put it this way you cant see the pixels when your nose is touching the screen. i saw one made by Canon last week and the camera to go with it it was sweet
The zelda hd demo was running at 1080p according to ign. And no one expects devs to upgrade ports . The games were easy to get on the system. But u will think nintendo will atleast use it on a first party title. But pikmins no 3d mario or smash bros so why waste money
EARLY Wii U LIFE PEOPLE
Wait til Smash Bros you will see FULL HD and 60fps
Stop complaining! The Wii U was just announced, and you are complaining about how the Xbox 360 can do the same 720p! Was there any 720p games for the Xbox 360 in 2005? Was there any 720p games for PlayStation 3 in 2006? No. Plus, this is 60 FPS! Not seen in a console before, I believe! Plus, later, there will be a 1080p game for Wii U! Just wait!
More and more disappointing launch for Nintendo. Man, I was do pumped… and I’m still interested in seeing more. But the more info that comes out (or doesn’t, for that matter), the more they’re just chipping away at my enthusiasm.
Come on Nintendo: pull out the big guns and stop pussyfooting around!
Well I never really cared for graphics and I know the Wii U has the same graphical presentation as a PS3 so I wasn’t expecting anything visually impressive. I can deal with 720p and wait a year or two for a beautiful 1080p Zelda and Metroid. Yeah Microsoft and Sony will probably make a more powerful system than Wii U but it won’t matter because the gameplay and first party software on Wii U will be better. My fear is that third-party developers won’t develop on the inferior Wii U (like they did with Wii) and all the Wii U gets is shovelware.
No disrespect to anyone’s comments, but prior to this info, I didn’t hear anyone, for example, say that Pikmin looks bad or good due to it running @ 720p. Bottom line, every preview article I’ve seen has said the game looks good. More importantly, it looks good to me just seeing it. I image it will look that much better in person. While I’m looking forward to the next MS/Playstation console, I can’t image that graphics can be improved upon that much more. Anyhow, whether u believe it or not, the Wii U IS next gen. It’s such a waste of time to argue, when we all benefit from what each company brings to the table. Now just waiting till the holidays, so I can pick up my Wii U, and a copy of ZombiU.
Also plan to get a copy of Pikmin 3 as well…
…-.- will someone tell Nintendo that they’re late
I honestly don’t give a shit, As long as it looks good enough and it plays good, that’s all that matters to me.
by all means nintendo continue to push the envelope, we already love the low resolution on the wii… all hope is lost, the e3 presentation was proof -__- get in line for a ps4 nintendo fans
yeah, i really want to spend 600 dollars on a console that will have no games for at least 2 years…(PS3 anyone?) i wont buy the WiiU on launch (and i dont with every console, because most of the time launch games just plain sucks… so much)
but people are overreacting, yeah its a little disturbing to see thise but FullHD are just starting to be “massive” next gen consoles i would doubt will go higher the 1080p because theres no TVs for that !!! and since we are just a massive 1080p TVs and with 3D in its baby status, TV developers wont rush the new sets of resolutions just yet, they just wont
so bitch all you want but i highly doubt we would see PC kind of resolutions, at all…
if theres no more than 1080p TVs why would you want anymore than that, i highly doubt theres going to be a new set of resolution (not counting 3D) on the next gen, because TVs devs arent making a new kind of resolution for standard TV, dont you guys remember how much time did it take to get HD ? or FullHD, most PS3/360 were played with SD resolutions for at least 2-3 years after lauch…
so bitch all you want, but i doubt the new PS and the new xbox would have some freaking super resolution if they are not TVs for that…

Fact is, pretty soon once the developers get to grips with the Wii U architecture, we will have games that look like Crysis 2 with 1080p, 60fps, Anti Aliasing and tessellation support. Now the Xbox 720 and PS4 will have more power, but it will not translate to anything drastic in what a general gamer will perceive on screen. Therefore the Wii U really could become a dominant player, with solid graphics, innovative control system, Nintendo games, support from third party core games, low price and a 1-1.5 year head start. I think Nintendo have been real clever in their strategy and are in a very good position.
