“Nobody – Including Nintendo Themselves – Knows What Wii U Is”

Electricpig’s Adam Bunker thinks that “Wii U will be the most confusing console in history.” Bunker believes that Wii U will not sell well because it’s not simple enough. He claims that the reason Wii sold so well is because it is a simple concept that everyone understood.

Bunker thinks that there are way too many controllers for the upcoming console, which will confuse people – including video game developers. Bunker claims that Nintendo did not learn from their mistakes with the marketing of Nintendo 3DS, which proves that Nintendo doesn’t know what they’re doing with Wii U.

“A year on from the official announcement, and no one’s any the wiser on the Wii U. Nintendo’s next console is a complete oddity in an otherwise predictable market, but is that necessarily a good thing? Probably not: Nintendo’s in danger of launching a huge flop, because nobody – including Nintendo themselves – knows what it is.”

      1. Non-Specific Action Figure

My Non-specific penis is in your butt soo…… yeah your first can i give u a cookie?

        Together Wii U.

    1. I know right. Only 2 controllers for the wii u with backward compatible controllers. Wii had like 3: wiimote, knunchuck and classic controller. And then it had backwards with gamecube controller. Controller statement is irrelevant

    2. Hmmm…. i’m wondering. if people are confused about the Wii U, then i can’t imagine the confusion Xbox Glass will get.
The Wii U is more solid. Nintendo just needs to focus on the new Gamepad and put “supports wii mores ” on the box and they’ll be fine

    3. Davin (aka Platinum Lucario)

Yep, they said the EXACT same thing when the name “Wii” for the Nintendo Revolution was announced at E3 2006. So they’re just bullshitting about it completely. And the only reason why the consoles always sell very well… is because of how many options are provided for the players, if it was limited in the ammount of controlers, then Nintendo would’ve gone in the same direction as what Sega did by now.

    1. He’s not saying he doesn’t understand it, he’s saying, looking from the point of view of other’s, it’ll seem complicated. Come on it can use every wii controller, and on top of that the Wii U gamepad and Wii U pro controller. It may not confuse you, and it doesn’t confuse me, but it will definitely confuse other people.

      1. americans…

y u so easily confused? it supports 3 controllers.
whats confusing about that? nintendo is simply creating more preferences.

          1. It has nothing to do with Americans, it’s just some people are just plain retarded and don’t know what there talking about.

            1. That’s a bit unfair.

Among gamers, yes the Wii-U is obvious. Bunker is incorrect in saying that developers would get it confused with the Wii as well (I mean, come on.. if you’re working with the coding of the system, it’s hard to mistake what it is..). People who KNOW what gaming is will obviously understand..

The confusion comes from the general public, whom make up the majority of the sales. To your average person, wanting to buy a console for your first time, if you look in the isle at Walmart, it’s incredibly easy to confuse the Wii-U as simply an upgrade. Look at the DSi. Visually, the DSi was about as different from the DS phat, or even moreso, and that was simply an upgrade. The Wii-U look ALMOST IDENTICAL to the Wii, and even has pretty much the same name. It’s not unreasonable at all to get it confused.

It’s not at all about people being retarded.. it’s Nintendo for making a horrible decision in both visual design and naming.

            2. so true if you can’t get what the Wii U is and does you should not be allowed to touch a toaster let alone the U, i think we are mostly all competent in the use of console and there is always the instruction manual

          1. This has nothing to do with Americans. The fact that you would even say something like this proves your low intellect.
            Sincerly,
            A Butt-hurt American

          2. My previous comment was geared toward AKARewer, not you SonicFan. Sorry for replying to the wrong person.

    1. there jealous of what nintendo has done, want to be #1, there fanboys as well, thats why wii get lots of hate.

    2. Nintendo is swimming and money and they are winners . This is why . Winners like winners losers like losers

  1. It really sounds like some gaming “journalists” don’t follow gaming news at all. Stifle yourself, Bunker.

  2. The Wii Little Big Guy

I have to say… I see how many people, who don’t follow games like us die hard fans, can be confused with the Wii U… I hope it doesn’t mean it will sell less though because of it… I want Nintendo games on a Nintendo console…

  3. I can understand he point about the complexity, but I think that is what NintendoLand is going to solve. It is a game that will showcase all the features of the Wii U with ease which is why I think it has to be bundled with it at launch. Nintendo knows what they are doing. I think it is the developers and others who cannot grasp how unique games and fun games can be with the Wii U Gamepad’s asymmetric gameplay that are making it a seem as if there is a problem.

    1. No he doesnt have a valid point. The wii u is a game console you game on it . Its also a multimedia device. Its not hard to understand at all these journalists just dont like nintendo thats why .

  4. Even though this guy is a complete asshole what more do we really know about the console itself after E3? The pro controller, that it can support two tablets and we learned very little about miiverse.

  5. I can understand that the casual gamer, or the general public might be confused about the WiiU, but as a gamer, I can easily understand what WiiU is all about. And if I can understand it, then Nintendo most definitely can understand it. The entire reason they are making Nintendoland is so that people can understand the functionality of the controller. I wonder if people actually mean the things they say.

    1. The only problem is that NintendoLand isn’t a bundled g game with WiiU like WiiSports was with Wii. Which i think is the worst thing Nintendo can do. Who is ready gonna pay full price for a12 mini game compilation when the point is gonna bee to show what the WiiU can do. So it should be packed in but no it won’t be:( I won’t be getting it.

  6. no no no no NOOOOO…. the reason why 3ds did bad in begining is that there where NO 1 party games from nintendo, they let 3rd party shine but fail, thats partner mistake, now look at 3ds and 1 first party how is boom. 17 million sold comon

    1. What’s a 3DS? Lol jk. Yea I agree. A lot of people I know waited to buy it because not many good games were out. Same for the vita. The only good game is uncharted and Sony ignored it at E3. The only games they mentioned were from third party companies and basically there are only 2-3 good games coming out for it soon. They should have focused on it more. Basically people news good games to buy a system. If there aren’t any then don’t expect us to buy one. The Wii u will have good ones so it should be fine

  7. At one point Nintendo said we were getting 1080p games. Now we are getting 720p games, at 30 fps… I’m out. Fuck this console.

    1. Have you not been reading the articles? Fact: the only game that will run at 720p are the one that developers chose to make 720p, but majority will run at 1080p. and it only runs at 30fps if you use multiple gamepads, but most game will support a single gamepad and multiple pro controllers. it helps to read doesnt it?

  8. Dumb ass, there are a lot of stupid people out there if they can’t tell a difference. so because Nintendo finally keeps the same name on a console and puts a U instead of a number people are confused. The only people who aren’t gonna know is the parents to all the gimme kids.

    1. So it’s stupid because Nintendo sucks at marketing?

Wii mote = peripheral, Wii-Fit = peripheral, Wii Wheel = peripheral, Wii Motion Plus = peripheral, Wii uDraw = peripheral, Wii U = …a whole new console? Yeah, you can see the problem here.

The only legitimately stupid one here, because your justification absolutely sucks and you’ll ride Nintendo’s dick just to make them seem like they’re the best thing on the planet fucking Earth. What pathetic losers you fanboys are.

      1. The name, WiiU, is a bad choice. As you said, there are lot’s of Wii peripherals names Wii-something. Knowing that, when someone says Wii-U, it does sound like it’s a Wii peripheral. The name will confuse a lot of casual gamer and even some hardcore gamer that didn’t care to read more than the titles of news.

And during the presentation, Nintendo focused to much on the controller. Yes Nintendo, we get it, it’s new, it’s great, it’s different.
But could we at least learn something else about the console? Like some real specs? Not just “Yes, it has a graphic card”.

Also, instead of focusing so much on the Wii Fit U (seriously? Who thought that was a good name?) and other casual stuff, they should have focused more on other, real games. Ya know, WiiFit wasn’t a game, Wii Fit U isn’t a game. It’s an graphical application helping you exercise. That’s not something that will sell well on a +300$ console.

I love my Wii, I love Nintendo and almost all their games, but if I didn’t follow Nintendo news portal, I wouldn’t know anything about the WiiU. I’m on active on several gaming portals and you can rarely see any Nintendo news.

Seriously, Nintendo needs to start advertising the WiiU better. Would it be really that hard to make a 5 minute long trailer per month about the WiiU, it’s software and games? Also, some information would also be really nice. They shouldn’t have kept everything top secret and then release it on E3. There is enough to talk about the WiiU on other occasions.

  9. Omg!! People are stupid!!! If you move in the businees you can easly spot the difference!!, maybe the can change the console design so some costumers can spot the difference but if you call yourself a gamer or worst a game designer, yo can see thr difference

  10. But the people in the game stores will or at least should know about the wiiu so they should be able to explain out to the people that dont know what it is. And if they dont know other kids or friends could explain it. Nintendo isn’t going to let people be confused. They will have explanatory commercials and good advertising. I am sure everyone will understand it sooner or later.

  11. Is this guys serious?
While we didn’t learn the actual specs of the system, as well as the size of the memory, we did learn what it can do gameplay wise, as well as showing some of the included apps for it.

Clearly, this “gaming journalist” does not know what he is talking about.

  12. All I need is 1 controller and lots of AAA 3rd and first party games HARDCORES and wii U to support all modern and feature engines.. if thats hard to achieve then maybe wii U is not for me.. but Nintendo promises that, so I dont care personally for many controllers…

  13. I am a Nintendo fanboy, but I totally agree. Everything shown on Wii U looked as if it could have been done on Wii (except Assassins Creed, ME3, Darksiders, Batman and maybe Zombie U and Pikmin). Wii U failed to show off how powerful it is. I saw no games that had me on the edge of my seat. And for that reason, I’m not getting on at launch.

  14. If people actually read the entire thing, he gave off merit points. I want the Wii U, but the whole thing can become a box of tricks without anyone to fully master them all. He also said he doesn’t hate Nintendo, nor does he want them to fail. He’s giving off merit points about the general public and game developers about the Wii U and all these controllers. We have the Wii U Gamepad, The Wii U Classic Controller Pro, the Wiimote and Nunchuk, Wii Wheel, Wii Zapper, and Wii Fit.

Naturally, people will feel intimidated by so many controllers and thinking they have to get them all or use them all for the gaming experience.

I can understand where he’s coming from, because it seems Nintendo also keeps trying to cater to those whining about wanting to use 2 Wii U Gamepads and whatnot.

Will I think it will fail? Half and half. I really want the console to succeed, but there are stuff that Nintendo needs to convince both the “casual” crowd and “hardcore” crowd that the Wii U is simple but can give you the best experience in gaming.

  15. This brings back memories of June 2006 when everyone was sayin’ the same stuff about the Wii. How people can understand Cross Play and that Smart Ass thing and not the Wii U?

  16. lol who gives a fuck? what kind of an article is this? seriously sickr, you need to pick your reports more carefully, this is NOT worth reporting

  17. “nobody – including Nintendo themselves – knows what it is.” a videogame console with an innovative control ,perhaps?

  18. Sony…stop paying this assholes to speak…
What is so difficult, a wii, better graphics, wiimotes again and a second screen on another joystick.

  19. People that doesn’t understand this technology and concept should be fired and go back to birth and develop some key ingridients in their brain to develop the logical part of the brain and maybe some more.
I thought only Zombi U showed how the Wii U gamepad should be used.
Do something on the controller and the tv shows another angle of the game.
Imagine how awesome it would be with Metroid.
The Gamepad will be used as Metroid Prime, Her helmet visor while the tv shows her in full 3D fighting like in Metroid Other M or something.
2 different type of styles combined into one by having just 2 screens that shows 2 different angles.

Like when Nintendo said that they wouldn’t reveal price and release date untill after E3, retards…really…learn to investigate or quit your jobs :P

    1. I see what you’re saying but which screen should we be looking at the whole time? and how would playing only on the gamepad work for other games when you need menus and stuff.

  20. I think it’s funny that these reporters can’t wrap their brains around an HD Nintendo DS.

“I just don’t get it! That must mean no one else gets it. JOURNALISM!”

  21. It’s not gonna be as hard as these dumbasses claim once the WiiU hits the market. Ppl are not that dumb once they actually get to experience it. I guarantee once gamestop and walmart, etc gets the Wii U console on display. What is wiiU? It’s a Gaming Console, What the Fuck else can it be

  22. How can Nintendo not know what the Wii U is? They made the damn thing!

Me think that Adam Bunker has no idea what the hell he is talking about isn’t aware that you would have to be a dumb moron not to know what a Wii U is.

    1. That’s true BUT they did a very poor job at explaining it. We don’t really have much a better understanding on what it could do from last E3.

  23. Adam Bunker : Son , Nintendo shows his Wii U at e3 . Do you want it ?

Son : hmm i dont know….is like a wii…but it haves a pad with a screen… is so confusing.. i dont know how it works…maybe…let me think.. no i dont know how could be work dad.

Adam Bunker : Thanks son! my review is ready!

  24. I love nintendo but I have to agree with him, It is the reason nintendo told to forbid a second controller but they did even more complicated! It is confusing for developers maybe but for me it should be even better because they have so many possibilities not a bad point.

  25. I’m pretty confused about what the Wii U is too. Not because of its controllers. Not because of its name. Not because of its asymmetrical gameplay or its online. No, what I’M confused about is whether this Wii U is even an EFFIN GAMING CONSOLE given HOW LITTLE GOOD GAMES ARE PROMISED TO BE ON THE DAMN THING. Whatever that Nintendo game is at 5:00 today that’s still “TBA” better be worth something cuz man, this severe lack of good games and EVERY DELUSIONAL FANBOY’S FUCKIN DENIAL ABOUT IT (“I own all three consoles and I enjoy them all!” – bullshit argument), is unbecoming of this generation.

    1. I totally agree. I don’t get Nintendo. They had the perfect opportunity to take the world by storm and blow the roof off of E3. Instead, they left everyone confused, wanting more, and worst of all disappointed. If Nintendo doesn’t show the world a triple A first party title for Wii U before launch, they are in serious hot water. I will buy a Wii U only if I see exciting games. Until I see them I won’t buy one. So Nintendo best hurry. If you thought 3DS had a bumpy start wait until you see Wii U’s…. but that could all be turned around if Nintendo would just show some games that appeal to their hardcore first party audience.

    2. I have high hopes for Pikmin 3. Mass Effect 3 is also a launch title. I think those 2 games alone make a halfway decent launch. Unless of course, Pikmin 3 sucks. I don’t think it will though.

      1. ME3, Assassins Creed, Batman, and Darksiders are all good, but they are all on 360 and PS3. So first and foremost, they will not be system sellers. NSMBU will not be one either because people are growing tired of the NSMB series (if Nintendo had shown off Galaxy 3 we wouldn’t be having this conversation). Pikmin 3 is the only game Wii U had that was good, but Miyamoto had previously stated he was already working on it so it came as no surprise. Nintendo did a terrible job at making the gamer want to buy a Wii U at launch. Now we have to wait a whole year for awesome titles to be announced at next years E3:(

  26. Nintendo could save themselves a lot of grief and gain a lot of sales if they just changed the name and had on the box itself “compatible with all Wii controllers, peripherals, and games”. Many people out there are going to pass it on because they think its a simple Wii upgrade or peripheral, and looking at some of the games shown, I would believe the same thing if I wasn’t a hardcore gamete.

  27. Let’s see… A backwards compatible console with a tablet controller and a new classic controller. Really fucking difficult to understand. I’ll agree that the name is kind of stupid, but not confusing. I think my main problem with the Wii U is the fact that we’re getting New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS), followed by the brilliantly titled New Super Mario Bros. U. That’s 2 NSMB games in less than half a year. Another NSMB game with friggin Squirrel Mario and Baby Yoshi is not going to show off the Wii U’s full potential and give people an incentive to buy it. A 3D Mario game would have been a much better choice.

    1. I agree. It feels like to me they are shoving NSMB down our throats. After playing 3DS version I don’t think I will feel like playing another one for a while.

  28. im am pretty sure someone will see the wii u commercial and if thats the case snes wouldent have done well because people would have thought it was a NES all over but no it was a different system and a different controller some for ps2 different system…………oh waite same controller ok ps3 different system………..oh shit same controller fuck it u get my point

  29. but i mean then again casual players dont even play wii anymore there playing angry birds and some other crap on iphone and android

    1. That’s the point: Nintendo wants to reel them in again and combat with those other casual games. I would have thought that was obvious…

  30. He has a point.

You guys don’t get it because you are gamers THINKING LIKE gamers. Of course YOU get it. But think about the person who bought a Wii for WiiFit. They aren’t as “into” gaming, nor have they followed the console as much. They have to be able to understand it AND understand why THEY should get it in a matter of seconds. If that fails, the system fails.

The tablet has no 1 specific functionality, and it’s not intuitive as motion controls; motion controls were about “you do this, and the game does it too”. Monkey see monkey do. Easy enough.

The tablet? It’s non-specific (see what I did there?), so it’s not as easy as saying “look, here’s what this does; simple as that”. It’s more about a really wide breadth of various and distinctly very different things that, while very cool and fun, aren’t as easy to get across to casual folk as a simple motion stick are.

  31. It’s simple, it’s an improved Wii with new innovative controllers and much better graphics. But, also Nintendo are branching out to the more serious gamer with it’s range of games and new generic controller. Hopefully it’s win win! 2 consols in one! :D

  32. So, the “people” already knows what SmartGlass is but, since last year, nobody knows what’s Wii U? Ok…. Haters gonna hate…

  33. I’m tired of hearing these blowhard “journalists” alyways talking out their ass. Let me guess, this is the end for Nintendo again, right? We wouldn’t have gaming as we know it without them.

  34. do these people think that we are mindless thick morons, just because Adam Bunker is an idiot it does not mean the rest of humanity is
