UK Chart: The Wonderful 101 Debuts Outside Top 20, Swoops In At 22

wonderful_101_close_upThe UK chart is now in courtesy of UKIE, and it’s a disappointing start for Wii U exclusive The Wonderful 101 as it swoops in at number 22, just outside the top 20 within the all-formats. In the individual charts it sees improvement and takes its position at number 14. Despite Nintendo’s marketing efforts – The Wonderful 101 Direct and heavy promotional slots aptly named “Wonderful Wednesday” on Nintendo’s Twitter account – it’s a disappointment in terms of sales. But looking at the bigger sales picture, the super-charged super hero game was released August 23, just two days before the UK chart was drawn up, and has been the focus of some favourable reviews. Plus, there’s a neat 30% European eShop discount if bought with Pikmin 3 until September 21, so no doubt many have opted for a digital download.

Disney have regained some notoriety this week with their title Disney Infinity landing inside the top 5 at number 3. 21% of the sales came from the Nintendo Wii, while 10% came from the Wii U, with the Xbox 360 gaining most (43%) of the game’s sales. Plus, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist has climbed into second place just behind Saints Row IV, which gets the top spot. Nintendo 3DS title Animal Crossing: New Leaf is still comfortable inside the top 10 and sits at number 7. You can check out the top 10 all-formats chart below, as well as in full here. Or if you wish to view the individual, you can do so here.

1. Saints Row IV
2. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist
3. Disney Infinity
4. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
5. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
6. FIFA 13
7. Animal Crossing: New Leaf
8. LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes
9. The Last of Us
10. The Bureau: XCOM Declassified

    1. what did i tell you guys, this game wont sell for a 60$ price tag, it should have been 40$, you dont listen though trying to argue with me. really there is no way i want to buy this for that much and to the looks of it. im guessing a lot of other people. its not like bayonetta where poeple would not care if it was 60$

the wonderful 101, just like sonic racing should be 40$, it would sell more.

        1. Not really.
In fact cheaper games often don’t sell as much because people will assume that they’re just trying to get rid of it- especially games that are on shelves.
On topic, you’d have to be delusional to think that the W101 would sell boatloads regardless of its price.
These things take word of mouth and exposure not just marketing, but word of mouth needs marketing which Nintendo has been sorely lacking. And no, having a “Wonderful Wednesday” on twitter doesn’t count as marketing.

          1. Here’s the issue: They’re marketing it on the internet, and people who follow upcoming video games on the internet enough to actually see the marketing already know what the game is about. What they need is TV advertisements. They had some for Pikmin 3, which is probably why it’s selling better than expected so far.

  1. 10% for the WiiU on Disney infinity I am loving that. 21% total sold by the Wii family of consoles. Wonderful 101, is a nintendo wake up call, had this been star fox, it would have been number 1 for weeks. Every one 25 and up U’s waiting on another STARFOX :).

    1. you talking about Mario Kart 8 right? thats a system seller. Starfox and fzero are not system seller or games u will see in the top 10 for 3 months in a row.

      1. True, everyone is farmiliar with Mario Kart anyway, MK Wii is also behind Wii Sports in the best selling Wii Game (shouldn’t count since it’s a Pack-in game anyway), DKC: Tropical Freeze could also shift some units, even more so than Metroid, even DKC: Returns (Wii) sold more than the 3 Main Metroid Prime Games in total, Metroid won’t get Units moving either, it’s (mainly) things that Casuals are going to like aswell as the Hardcore like Mario. Still have no idea on why people think that StarFox, F-Zero and Metroid are going to get more Wii U’s sold than Mario, LoZ, Donkey Kong, Pokemon etc.

    2. Nintendo didn’t make Wonderful 101, why would they change it for Star Fox? Also, even if the game is great, doesn’t mean is going to sell a lot if it doesn’t appeal to the overall population as something stupid, popular or mega addictive.

  2. Wow I’m surprised that lego 2 Batman is still up there. That game is fun but it’s pretty old. I’m also surprised how Saint Rows 4 is one. It looks more of a add-on to 3 but ehhhh will like to play it but can’t since stupid xbox RR’d on me.

      1. Ehhh, The Last of Us was just an overrated explosion. People were like OH WOW! A ZOMBIE SHOOTER GAME THAT ACTUALLY ISN’T BAD! So they think it’s the best game of all time now. (sigh)

  3. Well its hard for it to do well in retail in store, no-one has it in shops at all, even Game has one copy come in!

1 copy i was like WTF, I asked about Splintercell as well no copies of that for Wii U. No wonder it didnt do well

Also the Wii U is dead to the UK market, only loyal fan base know about it

  4. Off the topic, I sure wish this site would specify who a person is replying to. There’s been MANY times when I didn’t know if a person was replying to MY comments, or someone else’s.

  5. I live in Antwerp, 2nd biggest city of Belgium and I haven’t seen the game in any store (and i’ve been looking for it rather thouroughly). My pre-order is the only copy of the game i’ve seen ever….

  6. The top three doesn’t surprise me. It also doesn’t surprise me that The Wonderful 101 (despite how much I love the game) is ranked at 22.

Saints Row IV and Blacklist are serious business in the UK market. At least one of them’s on Wii U so, can’t complain too much.

  7. Nintendo still has problems when it comes to marketing, if they think that a hashtag and a Nintendo Direct is enough, then they need to fire the whole marketing department. Most people who watch Nintendo Directs are already Nintendo fans, they have to reach other people.

  8. Might sell better in america thats how most of platinum’s games sale, however the over hyped gta will sadly push below and might hurt sells but it should still do well

  9. This game technically doesn’t exist outside of a few gamers and Nintendo fans. There is no advertising anywhere and no copies of the game either. Nintendo looks after its own but sticks two fingers up at its partners. Platinum’s biggest mistake was working with Nintendo and my mistake was ever buying a fucking Wii U.

    1. Geez, regretting buying a Wii U just because one game didn’t make the top 20 in the small install base of the UK? Over-dramatic much? Unlike you, I wouldn’t worry much since if you click on the actual charts, you would see that the sales chart ends at the 24th of August. Wonderful 101 was released in aug. 23. Not to mention digital sales to boot. Don’t get me wrong, I find it disappointing that there’s no strong effort to advertise this awesome game, but I’ll still gladly buy it and play it on my Wii U, recommend it to my friends, playing it with them, all to support and get the word out that it’s a very fun game. That’s the only way we can help as gamers. I don’t regret buying the Wii U one bit.

      1. @mellow- refer to my reply to the other guy. I regret buying the console at launch because it ended up becoming an unsupported system. I have very little faith in its ability to recover and I feel that I’ve wasted my money. In addition to that Nintendo hasn’t bothered to promote this new game beyond a Nintendo Direct, and I feel that this yet another example of Nintendo looking after number one, and leaving its partners to dangle. They are the publisher in this instance. Where is the support?

Again, this has nothing to do with the W101. If it were any other game in its place I would have been just as noisy.

        1. Hmm, that make sense. I mean, I can understand, since you’ve had yours since launch and there was hardly anything over the past year that would make you think nintendo was supporting it thoroughly. As oppose to me, who just recently bought a Wii U after having enough money and seeing a ton of games I want to play over the coming months. I can’t relate to why you feel it’s a waste of money exactly, but judging by the upcoming lineup, I’m thinking i’d still be happily playing my Wii U in the future. Give it some time, or at least a benefit of the doubt, because I’m sure the Wii U can’t possibly get any worse than it is. It should just be steadily going up soon. I agree though that they could’ve bothered to put more attention to this game, but idk about leaving platinum to dangle. Who knows, America still hasn’t gotten it, so they could still give it some ads for when it releases here.

    2. “Platinum’s biggest mistake was working with Nintendo and my mistake was ever buying a fucking Wii U”.

No, the biggest mistake platinum games is making is the same for nintendo. No TV advertisements. As for you buying a wii u, well that’s your decision…don’t be pissed off over a game you thought was going to sell ass loads and then regret buying one. It’s really immature and sounds like you only bought it for this game alone which is not a good reason to blame the system.

      Just saying…

      1. Whoa whoa whoa, where did that come from? You have come to your own conclusions about why I made that comment and then proceed to insult me. What I said is based on an accumulation of annoyances towards the console. It has nothing to do specifically with this game. Now apologize for your remark.

  10. Why is everyone getting so worked up about. The game came out two days before the UK chart. Thats not bad for a new IP that happens to be on Wiiu in the UK where the Wiiu is nonexistent. Games don’t need to sale 1 million copes in a few days to make them good. Slow and steady, this ain’t a race.
