Nintendo: Nintendo President Deals With Strange Investor At Shareholders Meeting

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had a curious exchange of words with one of the investors at Nintendo’s annual shareholders meeting. It seems as though one of the investors at the event was rather upset with Nintendo over falling share prices and Nintendo’s efforts during the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Thankfully Iwata, being Nintendo’s president, was more than capable of providing an adequate response.

With microphone in hand, the unnamed shareholder began with the following:

I’m concerned about the falling stock price. I own stock, but I don’t own a single Nintendo product. I believe games are a waste of time. By the way, the reason I own Nintendo stock is because the name is nice, it’s in Kyoto and it was listed in the year of my birth.

Iwata, despite the unexpected comment, was able to respond with this:

There are people in this world who don’t feel that games are a waste of time, so Nintendo continues to exist. We’d like to eliminate the thinking that playing games by yourself is negative, or when there’s a crime you immediately tie it into games. We’d like to raise the social importance of games. We’re working to expand the gaming population, yourself included.

The shareholder then followed up with a question regarding Nintendo’s supposed lack of doing anything to help the victims of the recent Japan earthquake and tsunami:

During the Tohoku earthquake disaster, I believe people in the evacuation centers were lacking in exercise. Why didn’t you bring Wii Fit to them? Why didn’t you show off to the media that you’re doing more for the victims?

This prompted the CEO to state that Nintendo has in fact provided much-needed items to areas affected in the disaster. He also stated that they provided to evacuation shelters, and they simply didn’t feel it necessary to get the media involved. In fact, Nintendo had a policy in place specifically aimed at not getting the media involved.

  2. Just have to say, his reason for investing in Nintendo in the first place is just idiotic. And props for Nintendo going behind the media radar in giving tsunami aid.

    1. Agreed. Nintendo could have tried to turn it into a wii fit ad, or use it to build moral.

Supporting for the purpose of supporting – Nintendo continues to earn my respect.

Might I also add, Nintendo delayed the kick-off of Key Components of Pokemon Black and white to preserve electricity post -tsunami.

  3. This guy’s attitude explains a lot. If a lot of Nintendo’s investors are like this it’s no wonder their stock is falling.

  4. Iwata kept it classy, and I respect him for that. There is no need to show the world that you’re doing your part to help others in need. It’s moral responsibility to do so.

  5. Nintendo did donate 3.6 million for earthquake victims…American companies never donate that much for disasters, just sayn…

  6. this guy is an idiot, why would people feel the need to exercise at such a horrible time? not to mention have wii fit given to them(and a wii) even nintendo knows this is idiotic,no one gives two shits about exercise or wii fit when their city is destroyed and family/friends may be harmed or dead, guy is such an asshole

    1. i like almost every comment here but i like yours the most, your right who the hell will be think about wii fit at a time like that, at that point people are not even thinking about eating! that dude is a bitch nuff said!

  7. why does this investor guy have shares in nintendo, even though he admits it himself that he doesn’t own any of the consoles? he is such a dummy and for him to have a go at nintendo and iwata is idiotic.

  8. Who invested in a stock just because the name is nice, it’s in Kyoto and it was listed in the year of his birth?

  9. I like how he’s a supposed investor, but knows NOTHING about the products (not having owned any). It just goes to show he’s not a wise, educated investor (if he’s even really an investor at all). Not to mention he’s an ignorant twit who alleges things that he knows nothing about, instead of asking non-biased questions before forming his opinions. Wow, trolls actually DO exist IRL, I guess.
