New Super Mario Bros. U’s playable characters include Mario, Luigi, two Toad characters, and Miis. In the latest issue of Game Informer, Nintendo producer Takashi Tezuka revealed why other Super Mario characters, including Peach and Wario, are not playable instead of Mii characters. Compared to other characters in the series, Tezuka claims, Miis can show more expression and emotion on their faces.
“We did consider that when we looked at which characters we would use. We really came down on the side of using Mii characters rather than some of the characters you had mentioned. Through the technology of HD, you’re going to see more expression and emotion on the Mii character faces. Of course, we’re going to continue making Mario games, so you can maybe look forward to some of the things you were asking about in the future.”

I’ve always thought “yellow and blue toad” was stupid. It should have been Toad and Peach. There is also Wario, Warluigi, Toadette, and Daisy. Plenty of choices that I would love to play as.
I thought if they HAD to use toads, make it so that you can play as the red, main one, and if you do then all toads at the houses become blue/yellow, but they stay red if no one is playing as him, if you get what I mean. Also, I don’t care about their excuse. When I’m playing SMB, I’m not looking at Mario’s face. I’d so much rather have Wario and Peach.

I like that htey have Mii’s I guess… but I think I would rather play as Peach than a MIi. Maybe they could of had Mario, Luigi, Toad, Mii’s, Peach, Wario, Daisy, and Waluigi. I don’t really understand why Toad can’t play but two diffferent ones can. Maybe its because he is running the stores? And I guess if you played as Peach than it wouldn’t make sense for you to go rescue her. Maybe after you beat Bowser Peach could be unlocked. Or in future game Bowser could kidnap Daisy and Peach, Mario, Luigi, and Toad go to rescue her. Toadette could run the stores or something.
Wow, have Nintendo really lost faith in their own cast of characters? One of the reasons I loved Super Mario 64 DS was that you can play the game with either Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, or Wario, and they all had their own skill set. But no, Wario can’t be in the game because he can’t make a face that doesn’t show his teeth. Who cares? Last time I checked, all those Mii’s have are those blank expressions that they’re default to, and then slightly change to a somewhat frowney face when they lose or something. A toaster has more character than that.

I’m wondering, if that’s their excuse for Miis being in the game, why not replace Mario, Luigi, and the Toads with Miis because they’re “expressionless compared to Miis”. See, I just don’t dig this type of logic; it’s pretty hypocritical at finest that they don’t dare replace their big-name characters, yet don’t consider other characters from the series to be in as well. I agree completely. As if “the technology of HD” is really what’s going to allow depth of facial expressions. And as previously mentioned, Mii facial expressions are about as deep as, well, nothing.
It’s just another excuse not to have Peach or Wario or whatever other Mario character because of laziness. First it was the mechanics behind Peach’s dress, and then the apparent necessity to give Wario his own special attack (wha? This isn’t Smash Bros)… now it’s expressions. Last time I checked, Peach and Wario were fully capable of expressing a wide array of emotions.

Adding the Miis in is an awesome feature. However, it seems like they could have had plenty of room for other characters.
While I like the idea of using Mii’s in the game, I still say the two toad characters should be swapped out for Wario and Waluigi.
I really don’t see how HD will improve the Mii’s expressions and emotions.
