This Is Why Miis Are Playable Instead Of Other Mario Characters In New Super Mario Bros. U

New Super Mario Bros. U’s playable characters include Mario, Luigi, two Toad characters, and Miis. In the latest issue of Game Informer, Nintendo producer Takashi Tezuka revealed why other Super Mario characters, including Peach and Wario, are not playable instead of Mii characters. Compared to other characters in the series, Tezuka claims, Miis can show more expression and emotion on their faces.

“We did consider that when we looked at which characters we would use. We really came down on the side of using Mii characters rather than some of the characters you had mentioned. Through the technology of HD, you’re going to see more expression and emotion on the Mii character faces. Of course, we’re going to continue making Mario games, so you can maybe look forward to some of the things you were asking about in the future.”

      1. Nintendo is basically saying that their characters have no expression compared to simple Miis. Yes, they just said that…

      1. Because they have the same body shape as Mario and Luigi… that’s the reason, Nintendo said it themselves. Laziness.

  1. Honestly I Could care less, peach would be in the way and Wario always looks angry so their right, plus the casuals eat that stuff up. more casuals money equals more games for us.

  2. I’ve always thought “yellow and blue toad” was stupid. It should have been Toad and Peach. There is also Wario, Warluigi, Toadette, and Daisy. Plenty of choices that I would love to play as.

    1. I thought if they HAD to use toads, make it so that you can play as the red, main one, and if you do then all toads at the houses become blue/yellow, but they stay red if no one is playing as him, if you get what I mean. Also, I don’t care about their excuse. When I’m playing SMB, I’m not looking at Mario’s face. I’d so much rather have Wario and Peach.

  4. I like that htey have Mii’s I guess… but I think I would rather play as Peach than a MIi. Maybe they could of had Mario, Luigi, Toad, Mii’s, Peach, Wario, Daisy, and Waluigi. I don’t really understand why Toad can’t play but two diffferent ones can. Maybe its because he is running the stores? And I guess if you played as Peach than it wouldn’t make sense for you to go rescue her. Maybe after you beat Bowser Peach could be unlocked. Or in future game Bowser could kidnap Daisy and Peach, Mario, Luigi, and Toad go to rescue her. Toadette could run the stores or something.

  5. Wow, have Nintendo really lost faith in their own cast of characters? One of the reasons I loved Super Mario 64 DS was that you can play the game with either Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, or Wario, and they all had their own skill set. But no, Wario can’t be in the game because he can’t make a face that doesn’t show his teeth. Who cares? Last time I checked, all those Mii’s have are those blank expressions that they’re default to, and then slightly change to a somewhat frowney face when they lose or something. A toaster has more character than that.
Even so, that’s such a bullshit reason. Nintendo, just get your shit together.

    1. Hey, look, a dumb ass who reads the title, but not the article!

“Last time I checked, all those Mii’s have are those blank expressions that they’re default to”

“Through the technology of HD, you’re going to see more expression and emotion on the Mii character faces.”

      Yeah, “blank expressions!”

      1. I did say “Last time I checked”, didn’t I. I do realize they’re going to add more expression, which they have yet to show. I’m just basing it off of the already established Mii designs in the Wii and 3DS.

Try reading the comment again before you blow off steam like a middle school kid.

Was the “last time you checked” six years ago?

” I do realize they’re going to add more expression, which they have yet to show.”

The game–the CONSOLE isn’t finished yet! Christ.

Maybe your shit would make sense if they said “Miis were ALREADY expressive”, not “We’re going to make them expressive”.

      3. Actually, the last time I checked was fairly recently, and they still weren’t convincing. And obviously, the console isn’t finished yet.
You’re getting really defensive and arrogant over nothing. Please, have a seat.

        Bullcraaaaaaap~~!

Once again, tard, if they said “We used Miis as they are more expressive and have more personality than other Mario characters”, your bitching COULD actually be justified.

But since they said the what’s basically “We’re going to have Miis over other characters, but to make it up f to you, we’re going to make them better.”, you sound like a MORON.

      5. You’re really one to talk, throwing rude caps locks and cursewords. You’re also basing my entire post about how they’re using Mii’s in the new Mario game, despite the fact that they are still conservative as hell with they’re decisions and they are very much out of touch with their fans. Not to mention come up with ridiculous excuses. Like I said, I could care less about a Mii making more expressions and whatnot. I’m just saying they have a huge, already established cast of characters that’s only reduced to being used in the spin-off titles rather than being in the main series canon and experimenting with different plots and ideas.

arguing with you is like talking to an angry bull. Simmer down.

      6. Because, I’m not sure what HD graphics have to do with the ways models act. I was thinking they meant by clearer quality, not more advanced ways for Miis to express emotion

  6. The needless bitching in this thread is hilarious.

I’d rather have a Michael Jackson Mii to play as then Princess “HI I’M DAISY!” Daisy.

  7. Haha that’s awesome. Next time they could make Peach or Wario their own game. Make Waluigi his own game! It’s about time he has his own adventure.

  8. I’m wondering, if that’s their excuse for Miis being in the game, why not replace Mario, Luigi, and the Toads with Miis because they’re “expressionless compared to Miis”. See, I just don’t dig this type of logic; it’s pretty hypocritical at finest that they don’t dare replace their big-name characters, yet don’t consider other characters from the series to be in as well. I’m fine if they include both more Mario characters AND Miis to choose from, not one or the other.

  9. I laughed when I read “the technology of HD” part. It’s like it’s some new mystical creation that has been unveiled only recently.

    1. I agree completely. As if “the technology of HD” is really what’s going to allow depth of facial expressions. And as previously mentioned, Mii facial expressions are about as deep as, well, nothing.

It’s just another excuse not to have Peach or Wario or whatever other Mario character because of laziness. First it was the mechanics behind Peach’s dress, and then the apparent necessity to give Wario his own special attack (wha? This isn’t Smash Bros)… now it’s expressions. Last time I checked, Peach and Wario were fully capable of expressing a wide array of emotions.

  10. While I like the idea of using Mii’s in the game, I still say the two toad characters should be swapped out for Wario and Waluigi.

  11. Bullshit! I’m sick of nintendo cramming miis into everything they make. What next, Zelda? As if the mario franchise doesn’t have enough stellar characters to use. And the emotions excuse is just ridiculous!…

  12. how about a complete brand new game where you can play with mario or luigi and don kin kong and kerby like sonic battle 2 where for differences stage you have to use difference character depends on the situation and for the miis a download game like nsmbu that you use just your miis and go online to play with your friends…it will be grate in ssbu to use your miis

  13. Bullshit.

Including Peach and regular Toad would have reminded me of SMB USA.

But Miis? Really? They are more expressionless than fruit!

  14. Miis are stupid and only appeal to dumbass casuals.
Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi would’ve been the perfect set of characters all along.

That’s that, and fuck you Nintendo for being too scared to use your own characters.

  15. Wario and peach can’t display emotions?? Haven’t they watched the cut scenes in brawl? The only excuse is money.

Why would you pay the developers money to change complex character models, especially with these ‘brand new’ hd technologies, when you can erase the poorly drawn mouth of a crappy 3d dude, draw a frown and some angry eyebrows and BOOM, character expression.

Oh, yea, because you are going to sell a billion copies of said game. That’s why you don’t cheap out. Smh, Nintendo…
