Nintendo Appears To Be Researching GPGPU Powered Cloud Computing

cloud_logo

Nintendo European Research & Development team, who are a Nintendo subsidiary, could be working on something similar to what Microsoft presented at its Xbox One conference last week. NERD help develop software technologies and middleware for Nintendo platforms and are currently hiring researchers in the field of cloud technology. Here’s what the CTO at Nintendo European Research & Development had to say briefly on the matter.

The developers at Nintendo headquarters need to spend their time developing the actual platform, so I think we’d like to explore areas that they don’t have time for. For example the possibilities which are opened up by the combination of cloud technologies and new software paradigms like general purpose GPU programming.

Thanks, N-Dub Nation

Thank goodness it’s Nintendo Europe’s tree house that is researching this and not EAD in Kyoto japan.

      1. the internet is full of idiots.. but at least they’re actively working on removing each other from the planets gene pool

    2. This what happens when parents schools raise their kids. Talk about Nutty and fruity and not in the best sense.

  1. It’ll likely come in a generation late. Or this gen and Nintendo will mess it up severely, and then get it just right the next gen.
Like they did with anything else online related. Not a bad thing, just… Slow.

    1. i just want to subcribe to the Virtual Console and be able to play with option to purchase any game offered on it. something like onlive but with nintendo games.

    1. Nintendo Commander

      Another delusional Xbot…

How does it feel that your forces are decreasing as we speak?…

    2. no that is my dream… retail for collectors digital download via cloud, all interconnect to one Nintendo ID, home console titles exclusive to home, mobile games on dedicated hardware. Wii U\3DS needs this intergration.. i am tired of losing hardware, never able to get my games back that i bought and should have a right to liscenes through network id

      1. i really wouldnt mind paying 10 dollars a month for virtual console games.. not wanting new software exclusive to cloud still want a physical copy for blockbuster AAA titles but for classic games and exclusive causual or indie down loads cloud subscription would be nice, digital saves through cloud or physical sd\hdd drives would be great too.

      2. Digital only lasts as long as the service…we all now psn, xblive, and VC will be around forever like Sega.net, right ?

  2. If is for enhance what the console could do and not to do what the console should do, then that is fine for me.

  3. Nintendo, Microsoft is your third party researching cloud gaming on your behalf, just stop and give us X, Starfox, f-Zero and other lovelies.

      1. I doubt it (for now at least). Best bet is Star Fox. Especially when the phrase “barrel rolls” was used by a Retro developer to describe their project.

        1. Didn’t Retro also do DK Country Returns on Wii? DK rolls Barrels amd throws them, and I’d be okwith them working on DK some more… any of the 3 would really be fine with me, just need some Nintendo goodness to play!

        2. uhm.. it was neither used by a retro developer nor was it used to describe retros project

the nintendo magazine used it in the phrase

“While some suggest this new project is likely to be a return to the Metroid franchise, we’d love to see another Nintendo hero get the retro stamp of excellence. After all, having rolled out the barrels for Donkey Kong, perhaps it’s time Retro pulled off a barrel roll of a different kind.”

the nintendo magazine is of course not directly involved with retro.. and this whole statement could have just been blown out of proportion.. maybe it’s just what the author wishes for, not what he actually knows is in the works

I sent you guys (alba, sickr, silvershadow) last week about this NERD news that they had established themselves in Europe but you didn’t post it, why?…

Anyway, this is our new base to extend our reach in our region…

      1. They don’t hate the commander, the commander is just Marty Mcfly to far into the future for even mynintendonews, thus everyone has to catch up with his field Marshal awesomeness of a brain and fire emblem awekening level tachnician ways.

    1. Nintendo Commander they had to wait until Microsoft bumbled first. That way nintendo shows the world this is just a by product on the magnificent Wii U gaming console. Not the microsoft xbone VCR cable box, or the sony PS 4 facebook gossiping and movie game system lol.

      1. Nintendo Commander

        Yes that’s right…

However we do have more top secret projects going on than this…

        We will reveal them eventually…

    1. Other computers do the work (processing) and stream the results back to the console. Whether its full games or just certain parts.

It’s basically onLive. If you remember that? It doesn’t really work that well.

There will be a strong push for it in this generation because it basically acts as DRM, under the disguise of improving your game.

      1. So it basically do all the processing and send you results through the internet right ?? That means people with slow or no internet wont get a big use of this am I right ??

        1. Yes.

Nintendo would have servers set up, that do all or some of the processing and then send the results back to you via the internet.

People with no internet will not be able to use it at all.

People with slow internet and/or monthly usage limits would also be in trouble.

The recent Sim City disaster is an example of cloud based processing in a game. EA insists that the calculations the game needs to make are too advanced for our own personal computers, so the game must use their servers to perform these calculations. Hackers quickly discovered this was a load of shit, and EA’s servers basically do fuck all except some very simple processing that could easily be done on the gamers computer.

So I’m not in favour of it personally.

          1. Damn , thanks for the info , I really have an unbelievably slow internet and I wish this will not be the case for the next generation of gaming , that would suck .

          2. I have a feeling that this will be the first step in the advancement of the eshop. When you download to the 360, the game is tied to the account, not the system. This may be nintendo’s way of achieving the same thing, so you can recover games at no charge if your system fails and you have to replace it.

    2. ONLIVE JESUS ARE YOU DUMB STEEAM THE GAMES AS YOU PLAY

ITS IMPOSABLE AT TODAYS NET SPEEDS AND LATENCYS

  6. Yeah, and they’re likely to implement it 8 years after everyone else has already tried it and perfected it, using the excuse that it’s “not ready yet” or “isn’t mainstream yet” like they did with HD.

I would hope not; maybe they’re actually getting smart about new trends and technologies for once!

    1. Nintendo Commander

Don’t worry young one, our Empire has several divisions concentrating on different tasks…

This is an extension for our research divisions…

  7. I love how some people say how Nintendo is late in doing this. Sony and especially Microsoft have been researching this shit for YEARS for their other devices. Using it for gaming was an after thought. Nintendo is primarily a gaming company. They had no reason to research cloud gaming till now.

      1. yep its actually getting old, really like people still make fun of nintendo after that fucking xbox one reveal!!!!! its not even for the consumer or the player. its a fucking cable box voice remote controlled piece of shit with no games!!!!!! really im ashamed of the community. at least nintendo is about games.

    1. Nintendo Commander

Enough with the 9/11, it happened 12 years ago and is nit the worst thing that has happened ever, get over it…

      1. I think we can all agree, that the worst thing that ever happened, was the untimely demise of the dinosaurs.
Pretty hard to top that one.

        1. I thought the worst things happening were the Xbox one announcement and the invention of Pokemon ?

        1. You should stop using tinfoil hats, according the studies, those boosts signals, rather than blocks them.

  8. Do you guys even know what that is ? Especially N-Dub dick rider Nation is a tech noob but he loves everything that has the term Nintendo and GPGPU inside of it so I am not surpriesed by this article.

    Anyways on topic.
It doesn’t make any sense to things like that. The Wii U itself is not very good for that kind of things because cloud gaming related stuff is bandwith intensive. If you don’t have a very fast bandwith with low latency you won’t get good results. Try out OnLive with a HSPA+ or even an LTE connection and you will know what I mean. Also a wired internet connection is neccessary to get a stable Ping or atleast low Jitter measurements.

    1. Sky Grounder [@ Wii U]

It’s not like they’re gonna put it to use right away… That’s why they’re gonna research it, to see if they can make some potential use of it in the future.

    2. Firstly the orangefish you need to know that Nintendo engineers are smarter than you, Sony and Microsoft engineers combined when it comes to hardware and software interface. The Wii U gamepad is faster at receiving and sending inputs to the Wii U. Remember this includes gycroscopes and accelerometers. The PS3 and xbox360 could handle cloud gaming or interactivity with dx 9 resources, Wii U is DX11 equivalent. So get off your high horse and ride a donkey.

  9. It baffles me when trolls try and act like they know more than the people who actually are proffessionals. R&D team is basically wanting to send you Large amounts of data (GPU/CPU,ETC) to be optimized through youre WIIU, and yes internet. The difference is that with a good connection, done right it would shock and reinvigorate gaming at the same time. Complain about bad connections all you want, if you dont have a good connection, LAG is youre friend in Multiplayer games, so whats the deal? This sounds good!

  10. zigfried von schroder

No metter what they gonna do,wiiu is nothing but a piece of junk and a prev.gen.console.The xbox one will rape you all!

  11. So, someone with the tech knowledge, tell me how Cloud tech could help out Nintendo?
So far the only thing I’ve heard of regarding Clouds is streaming games, and I don’t like the thought of that.[it’s one reason why I don’t like how Sony is solving their Back-Compatibility issues]

Can the tech involved be used for anything outside of streaming games from a server?
Like, could they build the Cloud tech into some sort of box unit that we could connect to one of the Wii U’s USB ports to help affect the quality or size of games, or something?

  12. If Nintendo does, I’m confident they will wait until it can be done right. Nintendo is not the company to jump on technology just because it is there. They develop ideas, and then build hardware around that idea. If at some point they have an idea in which cloud could be useful, that is when we will see it deployed by Nintendo and not before.

  13. HE DIDNT SAY THAT ,,,,HE SAID LOOK INTO CLOUD AND GPGPU NOT CLOUD POWERED GPGPU

HE WAS STATING THEM AS DIFFERENT THINGS

I THINK THIS IS THE COMPANY BEHIND THE CODING OF AMD’S E6760 GPU THE ONE RUMORED CLOSE TO WIIU

CLOUD WONT HAPPEN UNLESS USABLE MOST LIKLEY CLOUD SERVICES AND STORAGE FIRST GAMES LATER

BIG 3D GAMES VIA CLOUD IS PIE IN THE SKY YOU CANNOT PROCESS DATA OVER THE FUCKING NET LOL

  15. I think it is becoming more and more clear each year that the cloud and cloud development are becoming major parts of all things technology. I think this is a really good move by nintendo
