Kotaku’s internet sleuth Superannuation has discovered that Tom Ivey who was the last remaining senior designer of Donkey Kong Country Returns at Retro Studios has left the company for Batman Arkham Origins handheld developer,  Armature. The studio that he has left to work on was founded by Metroid Prime leads. Ivey joins other senior designers -Mike Wikan and Kynan Pearson – who both left Retro in 2011 and 2010.

    1. Sega still sucks ass

No!!!!! You traitor! And here I am hoping we get another donkey kong country game! With so many staff leaving what if the next dkc game comes out shitty like sonic games?

    2. armature only developed 2 games sice 2008 and signed a so called exclusive deal with Electronic Assholes EA.. tho nothings come from this yet,so i might not support armature as i do Retro.

    1. You think Nintendo would hire anybody? While it sucks that a lot of the old team has left. Retro still has a lot of veterans from the Metroid Prime 1 days they wont let some new blood take over and ruin them.

      1. lol you guys are so unaware of how this works. One Nintendo does not hire Retro’s developers, Retro does. As with any company, most people give prior notice before quitting so I’m very sure that Retro is not surprised. Not only that but Retro relocated last year to a new office and hired a ton of new staff (alot of ex-Halo and Uncharted devs and artists.) Retro is fine. Chill out.

I wish him bad luck… That’s what happens when you betray franchises like donkey kong and metroid! Fuck you fuck you very much Tom!

          1. yes, because only Nintendo makes great games. all hail the pinaccle of gaming software, even Wii Music. :l

          2. Just because he no longer works FOR Nintendo doesn’t mean he will no longer work WITH Nintendo.

    1. Close, but no cigar. Alas, do not worry. Since you’re not in a hurry why don’t you stop by for a free rectal examination with yours truly, Nintedward?

                    1. You won nothing. You admitted your mother was a slag that has sex with several people for free. That’s disgusting.

  1. Too many people who worked with the Prime series have already left Retro. I hope this doesn’t impact the quality of games. DKCR is a great game so I still have positive vibes.

    1. That’s what people don’t realize a Metroid Prime 4 by Retro wont be the same as they used to be.

      1. And that would be bad, how? The Prime series is pretty much done. If they do another game, possibly taking place after Prime 3 and finally answering that cliffhanger, it should bring something fresh. I’ve been thinking that if they would go with the name Metroid Dread they could add an element of horror that has never been seen in the series before. Of coarse exploration would still be a huge part of the game since it is Metroid after all.

        1. I actually would love to see a metroid based horror game, nintendo have a good eye for horror devs (eternal darkness fatal frame). And the ship scene at the start of prime was really good horror like atmosphere reminded me of dead space actually.

        2. I didnt say it would be bad? In my opinion Retro Studios can do no wrong. I would get a Nintendogs game made by them. However Horror in Metroid nah I have no interest in that I would have to pass on that Metroid game. If a Prime 4 was to happen I would like the Space Pirates to be the main villians. Were we have to discover who the leader of them is. Kinda like how the Arbitor is the leader of the elites in Halo.

          1. We’ve known the leader since the first Metroid game. It’s Mother Brain, or Ridley when she’s not around.

          2. And i’m not saying horror would be a main focus. Just that there could be some enemies that would actually scare you and could kill you easily if you’re not careful. Other than that it would be a pretty standard Metroid game.

    1. Maybe because Retro do few titles, excellent titles, but just a few. They need to let Retro people work in 2 teams at least, one from new IP’s, and 1 for Nintendo IP’s. That way people inside doesn’t stick with the same forever and not get bored. That’s my guess, of course.

      1. They signed up for Retro knowing full well that the sole purpose for Retro Studios was to work on Nintendos IPs that Nintendo themselfs don’t have the time for. Its basically an extension of Nintendo itself.

          1. Thats why there games have such high quality. You want them to spit out a game every year like COD? Cause we all know how well that goes. Bungie is no different then Retro a new game every few years.

        1. No no. Of course games FOR Nintendo Consoles, what i meant, is that, they let create a new IP, FOR nintendo consoles, and not only what Nintendo says like “Only metroid” , “only DK” . Those guys must be wanting to do something different from time to time,

  2. i think Nintendo should invest in more western developers because that’s where the real games come from just saying.

    1. COD, DEAD island reptide, CRYSIS 3 real games? are you kiddding? really please tell me you are joking.

            1. You may have a mom out there somewhere. But at the end of the day you’re left lying in a shitty, grotty orphanage with a few toys and a computer in which you to vent your delusional impersonations of video game characters. Pretty sad really.

  3. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t a former Retro Studios designer leave Retro to work on Halo 4?

    1. Yeah. Anyone who’s played Halo 4 and any Metroid Prime game can instantly tell that Prime devs worked on it.

      1. Soooo.. now we want Armature making a game.. Not Retro?? And Retro?? I don’t know!!! I hope Origins: Blackgate is good. Seems awesome, so far.

    2. The lead level designer from the Metroid Prime games left Retro and works at 343i now and made Halo 4.

  4. Happens all the time, people constantly move studios to work with different companies and different teams, Retro has a bunch of Naughty Dog and Vigil developers now.

  5. Soooo.. now we want Armature making a game.. Not Retro?? And Retro?? I don’t know!!! I hope Origins: Blackgate is good. Seems awesome, so far.

  6. As long as the studio continues to release good games and continue running like a smooth, oiled machine, I’m happy. I also wish for Armature to develop more games for the 3DS. It’s likely since it’s a handheld console of course.

  7. If Donkey Kong Country continues I never thought it should be Retro making it. Sure, DKCR is great (playing it right now on my 3DS) but I think another studio could pick up where Retro left off.

  8. People usually don’t stay in on place in gaming. You are lucky to be stationary for more than a decade. These people leaving Retro don’t bother me because Nintendo will just replace them with graduates from DigiPen. Plus, former Rare employees (the REAL Rare from back in the day) are working their now. For all we know Nintendo’s secret strategy all along was to reclaim what Rare was under the Retro umbrella.

This also cold be a mission from Nintendo to infiltrate western-developers. Strategically placing their trained assassins into these companies to push the clowns out and bring in smart people that will work with Nintendo in the future. Coming from a Nintendo umbrella, I;m sure ex-Retro people have a wealth of gaming experience that will allow them to climb the latter quickly in their new places of employment.

  9. So with him leaving pretty much means that retro’s new game is not a new IP, I’m little disappointing.

    1. I don’t think his departure has anything to do with what the title is. He is a senior programmer, which means he worked FOR the guy that makes those decisions. Besides, the game is probably all done by now anyway just with the final touches of polish being put on.

  10. I hope to see some good games come from Armature then (well probably get Arkham Origins:Blackgate). Also I hope Retro doesn’t lose anymore talent and gains some more to balance this loss.

    1. Thenintendowatcher

when virgil went under retro got a lot of the staff and they also got some naughty dog guys around the same time, their fine

  11. Nintendo children, these guys moving on is a good thing. How else will you the upcoming programming, producing, directing, PR etc. generation get employment? Aonuma wants to work on other projects apart from Zelda as well. We cannot complain about everything. Them forming another company allows more third parties for us :).

  12. This is potentially bad news. Armature’s only xperience right now is with handheld games, which are the only kinda systems I own. The bigger and more talented they get, they could get brought on to work on the big boy consoles. And they are currently one of the best handheld devs out there

  13. Was on IGN just a few moments ago. Microsoft is in trouble if the don’t show anything worth while next week. I want my early xbox games. No more halo nonsense. IGN is asking what was microsoft’s best E3? lol.

    1. I saw the explosion about all of their latest clarifications, and they’ve basically just downplayed some and confirmed others.
The console is still full of unnecessary bullshit that gamers do not want.
      GG, Microsoft.
I look forward to seeing who you sell off Rare’s IP’s to before the console side of your business goes under.

  14. Thenintendowatcher

wait what’s the problem? one guy left oh no big deal he was a good designer for dkcr and now he wants to move on. that’s not a big deal guys retro has a ton of staff and they got a new bigger office long ago, there fine. The guy wanted to move on to something new, that’s fine. Quite freaking out this allows new talent to be brought to the front so that we can get more awesome ideas for games! this is a good thing for everyone! Retro gets fresh meat and armature gets a veteran to help them out, all and all this is not bad at all!
