Masahiro Sakurai has explained to Now Gamer the differences between the long-awaited Super Smash Bros games on the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS. Sakurai explained that the team will include the same characters in each version as they don’t want anyone to feel left out. Sakurai says that both versions will look fantastic, but the Wii U version of the game will include increased fidelity and detail. This basically means Sakurai and his team will have the ability to create things on a bigger scale. Sakurai also says that there are limitations in bringing over stages from Smash Bros Brawl for Wii in the latest Super Smash Bros game. Here’s what he had to say.
“Fundamentally we’re going to have the same characters on both systems. If there was a character you couldn’t play on Wii U but you could play on 3DS, or vice versa, that’s rough for consumers. So we want players to be able to have the same character experiences on both devices.”
“I don’t have a preference whether they own the Wii U version or the 3DS version or both versions. It’s sort of like what I talk about with the game creation philosophy itself – I really want the end user, the game player themselves, to find what they like and really just go with that.”
“From an artistic standpoint, when we’re looking at these high detail environments that we’re creating, we now have to go in and work on all of those little things, because as you can see, if you don’t put in the attention to detail they look flat and lifeless.”
“If we did do that [include stages from Brawl] stuff that was on Wii would have to be altered to be put on a 3DS. You’d have to make some tweaks. Whether or not you’d do that and still do those justice remains to be seen. We’re going to have to look at that.”

Although that is a genuine concern of mine as well, we have to simply have faith in Sakurai. Look at what he did with Kid Icarus: Uprising, the size and scope of that game surprised everyone.
There won’t be crossplay, so theres no need for there to be identical stages, simply identical characters. I’ll be satisfied with reduced modes on the 3DS version, as I’ll expect the WiiU version to be a meatier experience overall.
3DS and WiiU don’t have to be the same exact game (like MH3U), as most games released for both systems are not (Skylanders, Sonic Generations, Sonic Racing, ect).
Exactly. I would be more than content if the 3DS version was just multiplayer Smash and maybe single player Smash matches. I don’t need Adventure or Boss Battles or anything like that really.
I’ll be surprised if Nintendo actually let’s the 3DS and Wii U version be identical, let’s hope something happens there before it launches, though, I’m starting to feel that this game is a little rushed. :/
Don’t think of it that way, for Brawl, Sakurai would post daily updates on his progress and release little tidbits of info and screenshots along the way. It was very cool because you could see the game evolve little by little. This went on for months, so don’t expect any kind of release date. Nintendo thrives on taking their time and delays and such.
That’s what I’m thinking too.Gotta have faith in the man and his team. They didn’t disappoint with their last 3 games and with 2 top platforms this is a new challenge for them. Imo both games gonna be great and I’m gonna get them both. Can’t wait for more info on what they’re gonna put in this game :D

Without crossplay, different content in each version would really be the main reason to get both Wii U and 3DS versions.

The Wii U version of Smash Bros is clearly optimized for the Wii U. It runs in 1080p at 60fps, and it looks absolutely gorgeous in the process. It is a fantastic looking game from what we’ve seen so far. By the time the 2014 release rolls around, expect it to look even better.
This isn’t going to be a MH3U situation, where the Wii U was clearly just an upscaled and version of the 3DS one, with some incredibly minor graphical improvement.
The Wii U version of Smash Bros looks at 14.8million times nicer than the 3DS version. I’m not a fan of the semi cell shading thing they’re doing with the 3DS version, but 3DS games always look much nicer on the actual hardware, so we’ll see what it’s like then.
They’ve got games coming out that show what the Wii U is capable of. Look at Mario Kart 8, when the first footage was shown, no one believed it was in game. Everyone thought it just a cgi trailer before the actual gameplay would be shown. But no, it was in game. Again, at 1080p at 60fps.
Not all games are going to be graphically mind blowing, it doesn’t mean they’re ports of 3DS games.
Very good point about the 1080p 60fps thing, and yes, Mario Kart does look better than I expected it to, I haven’t found anybody yet who doesn’t agree that the new Mario Kart looks to be a certain graphical step up from current Wii U games.
I don’t know about how many other games they have in development compared to Nintendo at the same time but Nintendo do seem to have a very high standard for testing their games. I’ve played Mario Kart Wii with my friends over thousands of races and it still amazes me how polished and finely tuned that game is when played at a high level.

Why does it matter if it’s a sequal? Have you seen how nice mario world looks? Have you seen mario kart 8? I want a wii U now more than ever and I thought I was never going to buy one. Not to mention my favorite game franchise, SSB will be on it. sakurai has done an amazing job with kid Icarus (best 3ds game to date) and the other smash games, I have no idea why anyone would even suggest that he is in the slightest bit incompetent of making another great game just because it will also be for the 3ds. play kid Icarus and tell me you still have a problem.
It’s the core attraction for me too, the element of fun in Nintendo games, especially local multiplayer. I can’t think of another gaming company that has regularly caused so much laughter and joy in my household.

I still think that Sakurai would do better to make them two completely different games, so that way players can choose to buy the amazing 3DS version of the game, or choose to buy the far more superior Wii U version. That could help stimulate Wii U sales.

Jeez, all you butthurt whiners. Nintendo obviously ought to put out more “system seller” games for Wii U, and Smash Bros probably will be one. But they’re clearly not concerned with that as a priority. They’ve made the choice to put this on both systems rather than saying people need a Wii U to play it. Why? Because they want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy the game, and enjoy it how they want to. People have been asked for handheld Smash Bros for years. They’re just trying to give the best experience they can to all Nintendo gamers, even though they get no thanks for it because of self-entitled jerks like everyone complaining about this.
The games are clearly already in a state to put out what we’ve seen so far, and yet still so far from release. They’ve got time to add yet more, especially as they’re not getting some idea of what people want, they can focus on polishing the Wii U version more. Plus the fact that they actually made an advertising point out of the 3DS not having as good graphics as the Wii U goes to show that the Wii U will be a superior version.

I wasn’t a fan of most of the Brawl stages. I liked the Mario Sunshine one (mostly because of the music) and the Luigi’s Mansion one (also because of the music). I liked Frigate Orpheon (but hated how it flippe upside down), I loved te Wind Waker Pirate Ship stage! and Animal Crossing stage! and Battlefield and Final Destination of course, but most other stages were annoying. Wario Ware is unplayable, Same with Spear Pillar and I hate ALL F-Zero stages (they are sooo small!!) and Mr. Game&Watch stages suck too. Pictochat was nice….Hanenbow was god awful… 💋

Yes, that’s most probably going to happen. But who knows, maybe we’ll have both Chrom and Ike. But then again, Marth is more likely to be in the game than him I guess and I doubt they’ll replace Marth with Ike. And I don’t think they’ll give us three Fire Emblem characters.

Any time there’s a main console version of a game, I’ll NEVER buy the handheld version. Handheld versions always suck compared to major console versions, of ANYTHING. Besides, it’s already hard enough to see what’s going on at times on the Smash Bros. games, let alone having to look at it on that tiny 3DS screen.
