IGN Awards Sonic Lost World On Wii U, 5.8/10

sonicthehedgehog

Popular online gaming publication IGN has slammed the latest Sonic game which is exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. The publication awarded Sonic Lost World a mediocre 5.8/10 and claims that Sonic Lost World lacks speed, precision and fluidity making it a big step back for the franchise. The publication cites poor level design, lack of speed and awkward controls as its downfall. Sonic Lost World is averaging 61 on online review aggregation site, Metacritic.

After the success of Sonic 4, Colors, and Generations, this is a big disappointment for Sega’s speeding blue bullet. Sonic Lost World clumsily tears all the wrong pages out of the Super Mario Galaxy playbook, and in so doing, loses the breathless speed and fluidity that makes a Sonic game a Sonic game. Graphically it may talk the talk, but the controls and level design just can’t walk the walk, much less run it.

Thanks to those who sent this in.

        1. The Wonderful 101 is both a showcase for the amazing potential of the Wii U’s GamePad and for its pitfalls. It’s amazingly inventive and full of color and bright-eyed character, but its control problems are so persistent they’re unignorable. Even that doesn’t ruin what is otherwise a clever and adventurous action game, but The Wonderful 101 is kept from being as truly wonderful as it might have been.
          Ign review for Wondeful 101

          1. The majority of the review kept going back to how hard the controls were for the reviewer.
As someone who owns and has no issues with the controls of the game, I can say for certain that he’s right; IGN gave it, what, a 7? It’s clearly an 8. AT LEAST.
They’ve got tons of BS reasons for scoring games low these days, especially when the game doesn’t hold their hands.

            1. Thanks guys, that’s encouraging. I love W101 and enjoy challenging controls.

Still day one purchase for me!

              1. How about a 5 that’s what gameinformer gave it.That said I don’t think they have given a 3d Sonic game high mark’s since ………Ever.

              2. Judging from these MULTIPLE reviews, the game is probably average at best and doesn’t live up to the hype. I would go as far to say the game is probably like licking a ball sack.

              1. Thanks for the tip, this guy definitely gives me a better impression of the game than the IGN REVIEW, it looks really cool

            2. i must say though even though the review was harsh he does have some points i did find the acceleration a bit lacking.

          2. I’ve played 40+ hours of W101, not sure of these control problems. I’ve known I’ve not been able to draw a shape as there wasn’t room for my guys to make that shape, or that I plain sucked at drawing a right angle… Or that I was too slow hitting the block. I know that I’ve sucked at the game, not the controls… But now I can happily swap through all the different unite morphs with no issue and can compensate when an in game wall makes it difficult to form certain shapes.

            1. So true. The vast majority of people angry at this review are more angry about the 5.8 score than the actual review. If IGN had the exact same review, but for whatever reason, gave it a score of 8 or something, it wouldn’t be receiving nearly as much hate.

      1. The snowball level they mention at the end of the review is as bad as they say.

The boss battles are also terrible, as they say.

But the rest of the game is pretty damn good. I find no issues with the controls, and the game is as slow or fast as you want it to be. You can blaze through the levels at top speed if you want, or take it slow and try to collect everything.

My score would probably be a high 70s, low 80s. (I haven’t finished it yet, so don’t know for sure).

      2. They forgot to mention Sonic actually can go fast but this game is built play a lot like the original design on Sonic Extreme which was cancelled due to time constraints so really this game should have gotten an 8.5/10 to be honest.

        1. After playing through it, I’d say it deserves a 6.5/10, maybe a 7/10 you’re feeling generous. The controls were fine, but the main problem was the level design. Most of the levels were pretty bland and boring. There were a few levels that were great, but a few great levels doesn’t make a great game.

      3. The review is one of the worst game reviews I’ve ever laid eyes upon in my life. Absolutely episodic, it’s much more of a non-specific blog article than a review. I strongly advise everybody to just not take it into account.

    1. I’m not saying the game doesn’t deserve a low score… But I HATE how IGN worships GTA. The past 2 games in the series got a 10. GTA IV by NO means deserved a perfect score. I haven’t played GTA V so I can’t judge… But I can almost bank that years later people will look back and see it really wasn’t 10 worthy.

      1. You mean to tell me a game that came out about 6 years ago doesnt hold up to the current standards of today? You dont say.

You know, I also hear this about Ocarina of Time, that its not as good as it was when it came out. To me; Ocarina of Time is still a Masterpiece.

          1. ^THIS. And Prime Trilogy, as far as game collection goes. Orange Box is good, but Prime Trilogy destroys it out of the water.

          2. Thats an opinion, I love the metroid prime games those I see as masterpieces. Galaxy on the other hand, runing around the small planets drives me crazy and confuses me, they always leave me disoriented.

            1. That’s just an effect of the games design, that actually isn’t an opinion tho-

the reason I say that is because as of now it is not only one of or is the most critically acclaimed game of all time for critics and consumers. But they game did everything right and did it so much that PPL WANT A 3rd ONE. That would be a cope-out and I’d hate EAD and Nintendo for making that decision

      1. Trouble is, there are us that know not to read reviews and take them seriously as they are just one persons opinion, but there are many that will listen to it and not buy as a result. Leaving the “hardcore” gamers having to play COD, GTA, BLOPS, etc etc as everything else is unsupported.

      1. Yea but as we all know, all of the big revewers are keeping an close eye on eatchother and they give similiar revews so they wont get to many questions, its the safer way to go. ;)

  1. A passing by stranger

The game is getting bashed so much from different sites because of shitty reasons, it has alot of platforming? Its a fucking platformer game what did you expect
The game is difficult? What did you want it to be boost to win or for it to hold your hand through the whole game?

    1. THIS! I havent got this game yet from mail, but when i look on these reviews all i see is it getting bashed by platforming and suprise Sonic started and always was about platforming. I dont like how people think that Sonic was about going fast by boosting linear stages and avoiding obstacles nowadays. Yes it had speed but gaining it required momentum and skill. This IGN is full of casual gamers that cant handle these games properly. What next? are they going to give MH4 3/10 because it requires skill?

      1. While I don’t agree that MS paid for the bad review (it was Sony…jk), it would make sense as this was an exclusive title that could move Wii U systems. That’s something that neither MS or Sony would want.

        1. -exploiting wrong word usage- I’m glad you’re good with a shovel but what’s that gotta do with this blog site?

    1. Ok, wait…all because you talk shit here, means we’re gonna talk shit there? Your not as smart as your sounding right now. If we did such a thing, then we are no better than you dip shits who try and cause trolling (trooling) for no dam reason. I can’t believe that you think we are going to do that…maybe idiot fanboys/fangirls who hate the other systems…but not the true fans or as I now keep hearing for them “pretendo’s”

    1. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

Also people calling the Wii U a baby console, it’s now had two games marked down for being “too difficult”, Interesting…

        1. Ummmm the IGN reviewers are not kids. They also did not watch kids play. They played it, so it is their opinion on the matter. Sorry, yoir comment is dumb

      1. I’m going to remember that Peanut butter kit kat. That way I can say to trolls, “ignoring that reviewers gave some games low scores because it was too hard.” After all 5 hours from now the trolls won’t remember.

  2. reviews are not always true, it only based on the reviewer him or herself.
IGN have bad reviews towards W101 and Beyond two souls, and those games are crazy awesome.

    1. W101 is one hell of a game. Its tough a d different and I love it. It uses the GamePad in ways I haven’t used it. My only complaint is Wonder Yellow and Wonder Black’s merphs are.hard to draw on the gamepad. Sometimes it changes to another color when you need yellow or black. Pink, white, green, blue and red does not have this problemat all. But if they make a sequel they may want to think of better designs for black and yellow.

  3. Why is it that one minute I read great things about this Sonic game, then suddenly I hear bad things? Nobody ever sticks to the same story. And it’s not only this game, but pretty much every Wii U game.

Like for example, every Wii U game was bragged about and praised before they were released. Then when they get released, bad review scores start flooding in. From Zombi-U to Wonderful 101. It just continues. Except for Pikmin 3. I think that game got a good score in every review.

    1. Because Microsoft paid IGN to do it after seeing how Pikmin 3 boosted sells. Like Level head gamer said it’s Nintendo vs. the industry.

      1. Yeah. And if anybody gives all of these games a chance (instead of listening to poor reviews) they would all agree that Nintendo is still the winner, just like they always were.

Since the very beginning, there was people putting Nintendo down and praising the competition. But look at how successful they’ve been. There’s always going to be the idiots who trolls and gives low scores to games that deserves more credit than they’re given. I’ll never forget the pathetic, low scores that GamePro magazine gave Earthbound back when it first released. And that proves my point. Earthbound is one of the greatest games in history!

  4. a lot of publications have always been biased towards Sonic. I mean c’mon Game Informer gave Generations a 6.5.

I normally trust IGN for the most part, but when it comes to Sonic, I disregard them

  5. I like IGN, but I know by now to not trust their reviews. They exaggerate about everything. I’m still getting Lost Worlds.

  6. I never take ign reviews serious especially with points about how it’s not fast enough. The developers clearly said they wanted to make it more platformer like. I’m still gna play it and decide for myself

  7. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

To be honest I do get the feeling that SEGA have been “trying to hard” with their recent efforts regarding Sonic games.

I think that a RUNNER 2 type game would be a better fit in all honesty..

  8. Screw reviews! I love platformers and this game is a prime example of one. And come on, Sonic games are fun anyway. Hugs!

    1. I agree. Sega can say what they want but it is clearly based on X-Treme. Lost World is what X-Treme would be nowadays.

  9. I personally agree with the review, I’ve been plaing the game for a few hours now and feel it is not anywhere near as good as Colours or Generations. But hey, everyone to their own opinion, I’m sure some people will like it.

  10. The review is one of the worst game reviews I’ve ever laid eyes upon in my life. Absolutely episodic, it’s much more of a non-specific blog article than a review. I strongly advise everybody to just not take it into account.

    1. Ign itila gave it a damn 8. I’m probably going to get it still after what people said about unleashed i haven’t listen to many sonic reviewers

  11. Just goes to show that the game reviewers are blind to creativity and innovation. Call of Duty re-makes and Fifa to blame for that. Creativity over realism.

      1. There is no creativity in COD any more, just the same copy and paste job and not taking advantage of a consoles real performance and structure (notice how I didn’t use the word power).

  12. Looks like we need that demo on the eshop to find out for ourselves.

But I don’t trust IGN anyhow. Their W101 review was atrocious and even this review was written pretty poorly (accurate or not).

It almost makes me wonder if they’ll have the balls to give Uper Mario 3D World a 70ish score when it finally lands.

  13. I think Sonic Lost World is better than Sonic 4 Episode 1 and Episode 2 and all IGN want’s us to play is Cock of Doody

  14. It’s a shame that i never win anything for being right all the time. Its also a shame that i’m never wrong about this sort of crap even when i want to be.

    Dammit.

  15. Damn now the Wii U’s last hope this holiday is Mario which isn’t going to save it. R.I.P Wii U. Still tho ign can go suck it with there reviews. GTAV is no where near a ten. played it and it has alot of frame drops, horrible Ai, bad physics, ans just runs choppy. If any game has those ign Lowers its score but if GTA has any of those it still gets a 10. Biased reviews are biased.

    1. It’s because all the hype trash get a 10. They did the same with gta4 and like in the month of june of this year they come out and say it’s overrated, it shouldnt have deserved a 10 blah blah. I commented on their gta5 review saying how it’s going to be like gta4 and a few people thumbs it up.

    2. Reviews mean merely nothing anymore. If you like a game, then that’s good. Game reviewers no longer understand what games should mean. Gameplay over graphics, and imagination over realism. Innovation over console power.

  16. They cited a reason why the game is bad is because of “speed.” Ummmm, don’t they know that Sonic can change his speed? IGN freaking sucks. They come out and do good things some times, but then turn around and do something completely moronic.

  17. I seriously think Sonic should have gone his own route in this one. Not take the mario galaxy route. The bosses does have stupid and cheesy lines. Easiest trash ever especially Eggman at the end. Like seriously? Does it really need to try to be like mario?

    1. Yea I feel like they messed this game up. They should have just made sonic adventure 3 instead of sonic galaxy (lost world)

      1. I couldn’t agree more the Sonic Adventure series was the only time Sega got the 3d Sonic gameplay right. Either we get SA3 with chao garden or they need to take this poor hedgehog to the backyard with a shotgun and end it.

    2. im sick of everyone say it took a galaxy route, when it didn’t

Just because it has a floating planetoids you run on doesn’t make it galaxy

this game is completely different, so everyone who keeps saying it needs to realize that too

  18. even though I’m not a sonic fan I still think that score is based on the fact that the game is too hard for them.

  19. 8 is a resonable score for this game. I would give it a 9 because Sonic Team tried to make a fresh new experience into the Sonic franquise. But no, they gave it a 5.8/10, so they are basically saying that, Sonic Lost World is nearly unplayable? that this game is not bad, is “Mediocre”? are they REALLY saying that Sonic Lost World deserve to be on the same spot as Aliens Colonial Marines? a game that has unforgivable bugs, glitches and tons of shit? are they seriously saying this? taking out points, because of… SPEED!? because of trying new stuff!? because of being… HARD!? is this a professional review? because if this is considered a “professional” review, then I must be the President of the United States Of America.

  20. IGN wasn’t the only one to give this game a bad review. Gamespot, Game Informer, and even Joystiq. On metacritic, this game has more mediocre reviews than good. But no, IGN gives a reviews, all hell breaks loose amongst you fanboys.

  21. sonic lost world is of the best sonic games but it sucks im in america so we get it last :'-(

fuck ign and anyone else who gave it a bad rating this game is fantastic its like mario galaxy mixed with sa2

  22. it is hard to decide on which route to take on a level i will agree with that, but it’s way higher than a 5.8, i would say a 8/10 myself, a 7/10 at the very least.

  23. I stopped visiting IGN, after being a really big fan of their website for many years, once I realized they were becoming more and more bias. It started with PS3/360/Wii, and has escalated even more. It’s like they don’t want to give anything else a chance, except their favorite franchises.

Every video of this game has had me excited more and more for it. Unleashed was an improvement, Colors and Generations were brilliant. When I first saw this game, I had reservations, but as time went on, I realized there are some great things taking place here. It’s not just a mad dash to the end of the level on a very narrow path. As fun as the Rush games and those games were, they weren’t the same as what made Sonic fun. Being able to take multiple paths, climb up platforms and get into areas with bursts of speed, and enemies that actually pose somewhat of a threat, are what made it great.

Having 3 speeds is perfect. No, the dash attack may not be quite as fast as the boosting, but so what? Why boost when you’re designed to take multiple paths? It would defeat the purpose. It gives it a Genesis game feel to it. Having different types of levels, some straight running levels, some slower paced precision levels, brings back feelings of the Adventure series. I’m sure it’s not perfect, but it looks fun as heck, and from videos of people playing, especially one of the developers playing, control is NOT an issue, as far as I can tell. It may be new, and take getting used to, but to say it’s bad is likely not true.

I have the game pre-ordered. Maybe I’m wrong and it’s terrible and I wasted my money. I’m banking on loving the game and considering their review to be garbage.

  24. Destructoid gave it a 7.5.
The Ranting Robots (YouTube) gave it a 8.6.
So…. IGN is giving a bad review. EDGE gave it the same score, and other websites too. Sonic Lost World is a great game, and it deserves more than this stupid score.

  25. Well I don’t think ign is wrong with this. I mean this is a pretty good sonic game since it gives you a brand new experience but compared to colours and generations this game is just as bad as sonic the hedgehog 06

  26. I find it hard to believe. Maybe a 7/10 but I just don’t see a Sonic game going worse then that, besides 06. As for Wonderful 101 uhg…6/10 for me.

  27. WE GOT A FAILURE IN OUT HANDS!!!!! THE SHITY BLUE HEDGEHOG FAILS AGAIN!!!! WIIU FAILS EVEN FURTHER, THIS CONSOLE IS LAUGHABLE AND YOU DAMAGE CONTROLS WHO BOUGHT THIS SHITTY GAME!!! WE LAUGH AT YOU!!

    http://youtu.be/9luL3SFoSCw?t=24s

you guys are DAMAGE CONTROLLING HAHAHAHAHAHA your to slow!!! yeah you retarded hedgehog should stay on nintendo so they can enjoy some of you high speed shitty games.

  28. Well, I loved Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude when it first came out, yet that game got pathetic low scores on every rating I saw. EGM called it the crap of the month. So that just goes to show, the IGN ratings are only a few people’s opinions (and probably Xbox and Playstation fanboys). Some people could still love it.

  29. The vast majority of people that will be picking this game up this holiday season could care less about a review from a website. Sonic has a loyal fanbase on Nintendo platforms. Sonic games traditionally do well on Nintendo platforms. Fans of the franchise will buy it because it is there.

I have a feeling that the reviewers are trying to play this game like Mario Galaxy because of it’s look rather than like a Sonic. They don’t bother to comprehend that Sonic has 3-levels of speed that you have full control of at all times.

It’s microcosm of society today. If something is not exactly how I want it, then it’s bad.

People, all of you have minds of your own. Use them. Spend YOUR hard-earned money on the game YOU want to play and tell those to disagree to get lost. Let haters hate, let gamers game.
