Shu Takumi Feels Ace Attorney Should’ve Ended After The Third Game

In a recent interview with the Official Nintendo Magazine, Phoenix Wright creator Shu Takumi has said that he feels that Ace Attorney should have ended after the third game.Takumi told the publication “I wanted to avoid dragging it out and having it become a shadow of its former self”

“I felt that Phoenix’s story had been told, and that the series should not continue. Knowing when to end a story is very important and I wanted to avoid dragging it out and having it become a shadow of its former self.”

“Years later, when it was decided within Capcom that Ace Attorney 4 would go ahead, my position was that we should change the main character and tell a new story. I didn’t plan to have Phoenix in the game, but my colleagues said they wanted him to appear in some form, which is why he ended up being the accused in the first case in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney.”

  1. I agree, even though Apollo Justice was a good game. But I am glad that he will be overseeing Ace Attorney 6…however the sad thing is this could indeed be the last Ace Attorney game. But I do hope that we see a Ace Attorney Investigations 3 as Dual Destinies left a lot of unanswered questions about Edgeworth.

  2. Well….he’s not wrong but the series is just so damn well made how can you resist not to make a sequel. If anything I still want a ghost trick sequel because that shit was great.

  3. I hope they never think like this again. I’ve loved all of the games in the series so far without any dissapointment. Feel free to add in new characters, Phoenix doesn’t need to appear. Because I agree that his story has been told and doesn’t need to be in more games to make the franchise successfull.

    1. I dont know how to think about that, honestly I am one of the many people who can’t see the game without Phoenix Wright, however there will probably be a game soon without him.

  4. I’d wish they would finally bring ace attorney investigations 2 over here in the west, even if download only.

And a new Ghost Trick as well.

  5. Well, I’m glad they did continue. Perhaps Phoenix’s story should end soon, but when it eventually does, hopefully the series will continue with another new protagonist.

  6. It would be cool if Athena was the main protagonist of AA6, but the game still keeps Nick and Apollo in the picture.

    1. Yeah, I liked Athena in DD far more than I thought I would. I could get behind her being the lead sometime.

  7. Well I’m glad it continued. I don’t think that the first trilogy is at all devalued by the second, and I think Apollo Justice and Dual Destinies are both very good games, though neither are as good as Trials and Tribulations.

  8. I love DD, but I completely agree with Takumi. I’ve never played a game that had such a strong ‘sense’ of ending as Trials and Tribulations and that ending should have never been ‘defiled’, so to speak.

  9. I do agree that the 3rd game felt like an ending, but the series doesn’t really feel “dragged out.” The only thing that surprised me was that they were so quick to introduce a new protag (Athena)! I though it’s be a kind of trilogy-per-lawyer thing. Not really complaining because I love Athena and I’m glad the Phoenix is back on the scene, but I don’t think gradually allowing him to fade into a background kind of mentor character would be bad as LONG AS THEY DON’T MAKE HIM A HOBO AGAIN…Pretty sure that broke everyone’s hearts.
