Bowser Jr Was On The Brink Of Being Cut From Super Smash Bros

Would you believe it? Super Smash Bros producer Masahiro Sakurai has revealed that Bowser Jr was almost cut from the game. The team had a bit of a headache regarding which characters to use for inclusion and which to drop. Sakurai says he is aware that certain characters have certain fans so it was hard deciding which ones to include and which ones not to include. Thankfully, the team left Bowser Jr in the game.

ND: (laughs). We were wondering all the time “Which characters will be in”, and then the “long-time heroes” are announced just like that. We were wondering if that was the right way to announce them.

MS: After all we were planning on including so many characters, in the end this pace of announcing them was enough. Each and every character has fans, we wanted to drop as few as possible. About the order of which character has priority, the characters that don’t have a new title coming up have an overwhelming disadvantage…even characters that we ended up including could have been left out if development had progressed differently. But even if 1 former character is left out, for the fans this is a huge thing. On our side, we are re-creating characters from the previous title, and keep on adding more, so the word “reduce” is not appropriate. There are cases where we simply couldn’t make it in the end, but on the whole we did a good job I think and the people at Bandai Namco Games did a great job. We had discussions on giving up on something many many times, Bowser Jr. was on the brink of being cut but the staff said “We’ll do our best!” and we made it.

Thanks, Sam

  1. Bowser Jr. is just like bowser, but with a car stuck to him. lol, developers want kids and moms and adults to THINK that he is unique, but without the car, you’d see he’s just bowser. He’s already similar witht he car.

    1. That is a retarded statement overall. It doesn’t matter if without the car he’d just play like Bowser, because his entire moveset already is the car. That is like saying “Without the magic Robin would just be like Marth”, it doesn’t matter because Robin was designed with the spells in mind.

    2. its like youve never seen bowser jr. with his paintbrush, theyre so many opportunities they could have done with him, his car – not what i had in mind – but definitely unique. the only thing bowser and bowser jr. have is in the name. really look at a character before you think you have what it takes to think like them

  2. I’m glad they didn’t cut him. He’s in my top three characters. And his moveset is clearly nothing like Bowser! I don’t know how anyone can say that.
The up B exploding clown car fools loads of people that don’t know what to expect!

  3. Sakurai was thinking about cutting out Bowser Jr, but didn’t even consider Dark Pit.
The bias is strong with this one.

    1. This was probably back then when they were still finalizing the roster, meaning dark pit wasn’t even considered until later on.

    2. Or maybe it was the fact that bowser jr. was a very hard character to make and that Dadk Pit could easily be made since he already had a base character.

    3. I would of liked Dark Pit if he at least had a unique move set instead of Pit’s.
Hell, I would of settled for Brawl Pit’s moveset.
“Hey, in case you liked Pit’s moveset from Brawl, heres a character that can do that” …minus the final smash of course.

    4. The clone characters were thrown in easily. It wasn’t a matter of cutting a “clone” over an “established character.” It was a matter of not having enough development time to add in all the “established characters” they would have liked.

He said it took a whole year to make ONE character. Clones took considerably less time to add, which is why they were thrown into the game in the end to appeal to fans.

      1. False. The clone characters were adde on as extra starting with Lucina originally being an alt of Marth a la Alph

After deciding to give Lucina’s Falchion different properties and then some, we then have other clones put in with Dark Pit and Dr Mario as well to flesh out the roster

I don’t get the Dark Pit hate tbh. Kid Icarus isn’t nearly as highly represented as people make. Compare that to the fucking total 9 Mario characters (counting Wario and Yoshi) and the stages and so on and its not even fair to say there’s some sort of KI bias and if there is, good. Uprising is a hell of a game I’m surprised is not as commonplace as it really should be.

    5. It amazes me that people are still saying this. Look, Sakurai has stated that the clone characters like Dark Pit were simple leftovers that he decided to throw into the game as a free bonus. Think about it, Dark Pit is just Pit but with colour changes, a different voice, and Zelda’s Final Smash. Besides that and a few minor properties, they are almost identical.
Your comparison to Bowser Jr is flawed because Bowser Jr was a fresh new character that needed to be made from scratch, Dark Pit was quite literally made from Pit.

      1. lol I love when you guys write up lengthy responses to a joke comment I make, I understand the devolopment process.
Your inability to comprehend meh humor has given meh cancer.

  4. I would of liked Dark Pit if he at least had a unique move set instead of Pit’s.
Hell, I would of settled for Brawl Pit’s moveset.
“Hey, in case you liked Pit’s moveset from Brawl, heres a character that can do that” …minus the final smash of course.

  5. Eternal Ridley Prime

I’m so glad Bowser Jr wasn’t cut because I can now use my favorite Koopaling (Lemmy Koopa because I love the colors of his hair) when I feel like playing Smash.
