Here’s How GameStop Plan To Deal With New Nintendo 3DS XL Transfers And Trade-Ins

You might be wondering how GameStop plans to deal with trade-ins for the New Nintendo 3DS. If you have an existing Nintendo 3DS XL then you can get yourself $100 off the New Nintendo 3DS. The problem is you need your current Nintendo 3DS and your New Nintendo 3DS to do a system transfer to bring all your content across from your old system to your new system. You’ll also need to provide a charger if your trading in your old system and then buy a charger for $10. Anyway, here’s how GameStop say they will deal with the situation come February 13th.

  • Go to GameStop. Purchase a $200 New 3DS XL
  • Take your system home, go through the transfer process
  • Take your existing system and your new system back to GameStop
  • Return your new system for a full refund of $200
  • Trade-in your existing system for $100
  • Rebuy your New 3DS XL, use the $100 credit to pay for half the purchase

      1. Hi, no this is a “new” console. It is like a 3DS but a bit more powerful and with a few more buttons. But it is not completely a new console since games will still work with the old 3DS (except for some particular cases, for now only Xenoblade Chronicles only runs on the new 3DS).

        1. Dont reply to that guy. He’s a troll who comments on every post like a dumbass acting as if he doesnt know what the New 3DS is

        2. Really? Um. Yes. You must be fairly new here… That would be a troll. Please write his name down. You’ll hear from him again.
(It’s obviously not the original…the real Peteriuss would never use the word, “peripheral” – but, I understand why they tried.)

  1. I…love Gamestop. One time, I went in and wanted to buy something. I saw something on the bottom shelf, so I leaned over. Then it happened.

    1. Well I knew better to call first.

You may want to make certain the store your going to is allowing this. The one I called said they don’t even know about this, even though I told her it was sent out in email to the manager or employees she still acted like she had no idea what I was talking about.

She said I had to do it in store, at least there. Gonna call a few others.

So yea, call and make sure. So you don’t end up screwing yourself thinking they’re going to allow this when they won’t.

    2. Gamestop didn’t make it complicated, Nintendo did. There was no ‘sane’ reason to switch to the micro memory stick. This could have all been avoided but Nintendo loves convoluted and overly complicated digital software transfers. It has always been like this with Nintendo. It almost makes you think that Nintendo doesn’t want you to transfer your data. Almost like Nintendo wants you to re-buy everything over again!

  2. Well, that doesn’t sound convoluted and confusing at all! Here’s a better idea:

This is why people should have just bought MicroSD cards when the New Nintendo 3DS was first announced. I was using a MicroSD card in my Nintendo 3DS months before I finally had my hands on a New 3DS; so all I had to do was transfer the NNID, system settings and DSiWare. Took less than hour if I remember correctly.

    1. So what if I already turned in my old 3ds a few weeks ago… how screwed am i… even though I have the SD card doesn’t matter right?

  3. Here’s the simple guide to what they are talking about.

    – Go to Gamestop.
    – Pick up or purchase new 3ds.
    – Go Home.
    – Transfer data between both 3DS.
    – Go back to Gamestop with both 3DS
    – Get your money back from trade-in credit.

    THE END

  4. When I talked to the guy at my local gamestop, he said I could just go home, do the transfer, then come back with my 3ds and the receipt and I could get the credit. I think that would be much more efficient than whatever this is.

    1. That is the exact same thing this is. So I really don’t understand how this looks anymore difficult, when it’s literally the same process you’ll go through that this guy told you.

      1. What All terrain Venomoth has described is a little different though – What Gamestop wants you to do is, after transferring your data at home, you have to take *both* your old 3DS and your new one back to the store; then you will basically “return” the new one, and then buy it AGAIN, with your old 3DS serving as trade-in credit.
Venomoth’s Gamestop guy is saying, after transferring the data, you have take your old 3DS and only the receipt of the new one to the store, and they will just give you the trade-in credit.
Might sound a bit confusing I suppose, but there’s a difference, and what Venomoth is saying seems to be the better option, in my opinion.
Either way, the method they’re taking to handle this whole situation seems to be really troublesome. But then again, you can’t really blame Gamestop when it’s Nintendo who refuses to give us a decent account system, forcing retailers to make their customers go through this kinda tedious stuff. Sad, especially in this day and age.

        1. The reason I said that, is because it doesn’t make a difference really if you choose to do it this way. You’re going to be making that trip back for the return regardless if you brought your new 3DS with you along with everything else, or just the receipt and your old 3DS like this.

It’s important to call about these things, like I said because not all stores are even doing this for some odd reason. Although this email was sent from corporate to Gamestop, I know that much. One store I called wouldn’t do it for anything until I complained to the manager about it. The manager knew about it though, but I guess he forgot to tell the employees. -_-

So it’s literally the same process. Some stores are letting you just bring the receipt back, some aren’t. It could have to do with how they ring things up at that particular store, who knows.

Point being, either way you’ll be forced to go back to the store to get your return somehow. So it isn’t anymore complicated than what Venomoth was already going to do.

Yep, sadly Gamestop is handling this the best they can given the situation. Even though it’s a pain in the ass no matter how you go about it.

          1. Yeaa, it is true that you’ll have to go back either way, which sucks. But if you have to take the new 3DS with you again, instead of just the receipt, you’ll unnecessarily have to carry it around with you, in its box with all the heavy manuals and all. Sounds like a small thing, but it’s still troublesome, imo. That’s why I think the receipt thing is better.
But yea, generally seen, it really is basically the same; having to do two trips, no matter what, surely sucks, especially if you’re not living close to any Gamestop.
I’d definitely still give the stores a call though, like you said, just to find out which one does what or if they do it at all; wouldn’t be all that nice to go to a store just to be welcomed by an employee who has no idea what you’re even talking about.

  5. The worst part about that is a lot of people trade in because they dont have the money to buy it outright. This way you get your money back eventually but it still requires you to actually have an extra $100 at one point.

    1. Again, you can still do it in store if you don’t have all the cash upfront. This is an optional method for stores without Wi-Fi or people who aren’t willing to use their crappy Wi-Fi to do a transfer like me. If you do it in store, they’ll put the credit towards it before hand, so you won’t have to pay the full price, but you’ll have to do a transfer in store because of that, obviously.

All it takes is calling around and asking instead of jumping to conclusions.

    1. Haha, at that point that is exactly what you should do. It defeats the purpose of trading in to gamestop if you have to buy it outright anyway. Mind as well just sell it somewhere you’d make a bigger profit.

    2. GameStop, as a business, is profitting off of them buying your console, especially for the low price of $100. Skip the middleman and both the buyer seeking to buy a used console and the seller selling the used console (you) gain in the end.

    3. That’s what I thought too, at first.
But you have to keep some things in mind, such as, Gamestop giving you 100 bucks straight (which is a pretty solid price, imo), whereas with Craigslist, you’ll not only have to wait for someone to buy your system (if at all, mind you), you won’t even be guaranteed the $100. And considering that there will be a bunch of people trying this method, there also will be a bunch of 3DS consoles listed, reducing the chance of your 3DS getting bought for a good price, or, again, getting bought at all. And considering that this whole thing is happening is because a new model of that very system you are trying to sell is out, demand for your model, the *old* model, will be low to begin with.
It’s not as easy as it sounds, really. Gamestop still seems to be the better option to me, when taking all these factors into consideration.

      1. Meh people are selling 3DS XL’s with games on craigslist for 120. It is a perfectly reasonable trade in value and like you said, you probably won’t be able to sell it for much more or even the same price on craigslist. The only way you’d benefit, if it were sealed in the box still.

There is even ALBW 3DS XL in my area for $95, so I said fuck Craigslists. Since Gamestop is doing this now, I was actually going to sell it on craigslist but they aren’t selling for more than what Gamestop is giving you is the problem.

People on Craigslist are freaking jackals too, you price something low enough as it is and these assholes have the nerve to ask for an ever lower price. Or they always ask how much is it? When you put the damn price in the ad >.<, knowing damn well the only reason they're playing dumb is so they can ask for it cheaper.

Sorry people really get on my nerves on Craigslist sometimes. lol.

        1. lmao, that sounds horrible. I’ve never dealt with websites like Craigslist as I normally don’t sell my games or anything, and after hearing your experiences, it doesn’t sound like I’m missing out on much anyway.
And yea, I’m actually kinda surprised Gamestop offers $100 straight, because that really isn’t bad at all, imo. It just sounds difficult to sell a 3DS for that price on ebay or something when people can get a 2DS for $99. It basically offers the same things as a normal 3DS, just with a couple of “disadvantages”, such as the smaller screens and stuff. If I wanted to buy a device to play 3DS games on and had a budget of $100, I’d much rather spend it on a brand new 2DS instead of a used 3DS, I think. But maybe that’s just me, because I’ve made bad experiences with used handhelds before and the only situation I’d buy a used console again would be if it’s one that isn’t being produced anymore, lol.

          1. Same. Gamestop is usually terrible when it comes to trade in value these days, but this ain’t bad at all. On top of the fact most the informed people won’t want these older models anymore. That will make it a little more difficult to sell in places like eBay or Craigslist.

I understand completely, that’s why I rarely ever buy used electronics of any kind, unless like you said it just real rare and discontinued. People love to buy my used stuff though, since I keep every thing pristine. I seriously don’t even touch my consoles with my hands. I have a nice pair of leather gloves that I game with. lol..

A bit extreme I know, but it’s so freaking nice how clean everything stays. About the only thing I ever have to do as far as up keep is dust things off every once in a while.

Ugh, I hate dead skin cells, they get everywhere over time.

            1. Dang, that’s remarkable. I also try to treat my consoles as good as I can to keep them nice and clean, getting the slightest scratch on them actually makes me sad, lmao. Even if I don’t have the intention to sell any of them, it’s a good feeling when they’re still in really good shape after years of owning them. But yea, I don’t use gloves when playing, but it’s absolutely true that controllers and handhelds can get dirty super quick that way, especially after long playing sessions. So I just sit down to clean them every now and then.

  6. while it sounds like a good idea, it looks like it would be more of a hassle, if i did that i would have to take the bus back to do the transfer and take the bus to, now depending on the weather i can walk to one, may take about an hour to (depending on traffic) and about 1-2hrs (depending on how many customers there are and how long a transaction takes) so in essence its a hassle. now if there were a gamestop a few blocks from where i live then its a different story.

      1. Only the New 3DS comes without one. The 3DS systems that came before it came with the charger, so when you’re selling GameStop your used 3DS, they want all the parts to be there.

  7. Here’s an idea:

Sell them the New 3DS for the lowered price once they show that they have the original with them, let them do the transfer right fucking there in the store, THEN take the old one. See how easy that is, Gamestop?
This is complete bullshit; the sole purpose most people would even consider the trade-in is because they won’t need to have the full $200 with them. But now, if they want to transfer their data, they need to have the amount of money it would cost to buy the item normally, TO buy it at a discount?

  8. Most Gamestops have Wi-Fi. So instead of all the extra headache, just request the Wi-Fi access code, do the transfer at the store, do your exchange/swap, and leave a free man(or woman if it applies)

  9. Chill people, they aren’t forcing you to do this. It is optional and some stores aren’t even allowing this. You can still do it in store if you want, but some may find this easier, like me. Most the Gamestop’s around me either have no Wi-Fi or very crappy Wi-Fi.

So for me personally, I’d rather do this to ensure it goes smoothly. Plus I’d rather not sit in store with a bunch of other people who are no doubt going to want to be doing the same thing.

      1. I’m not censoring anything.

There are just so many people getting their panties in a bunch thinking they are forced to do it like this.

I’m simply telling people, you have the option to do it in store or this way.

  10. Go to the magical bubble gum drop forest, and turn left. Process threw The All Knowing Gate are tonic of awakening, and hardship will allow us to pass but seriously you guys in (Eric Theodore Cartman voice from South Park )fuck nintendo…

  11. OR, Nintendo could get with the times, let you upload everything to a cloud, and copy it down to your new system. Shoot, they could even let you download a PC app to copy everything to your PC, sell your system, then transfer everything back. Also, My gamestop is having a midnight launch. Do you want to get kicked out at 1:15 am because the launch is over and they want to go home?

    1. Sure you can do it this way, but it’s mainly a last resort method. Sometimes it takes a couple weeks for Nintendo to reinstate your account on a new system this way. So keep that in mind, you also might be on the phone for a while.

Nintendo also specifically states when using the over the phone method, there is no 100% guarantee that will get everything back. So that is very important to keep in mind as well, although rare that would happen, it has happened to some unfortunate people.

  12. This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen in my whole life pertaining to games.

And I do not blame Gamestop. I blame the idiots over Nintendo.

  13. how about bring in old 3ds and do transfer in store. gamestop is anti nintendo and shoves them into the back of the store with the smallest section. why support a company that doesnt care about you and the things you love.

    1. You can still do it in store… Geez, no where does it say you have to do it this way.

I hope you also realize Nintendo pays for that space, retailers don’t just through items wherever they want. So your blaming Nintendo for their small space. They only have a limited amount of shelf space in stores and Nintendo pays for that space, so how can you blame Gamestop for that?

They would probably get sued to high hell, if they were limiting space that companies were paying for with their products.

      1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

Something everyone agrees on except Xbots, Electrons, and misguided Sonyans and Nintendites…

  14. I was going to trade my vita and buy it for half and then do a system transfer, but my 3DS was involved in a girlfriend related accident and the wireless chip(I assume) had broken. It worked fine other than that so I traded it into gamestop(they can’t test wireless)anyways and only had to pay for tax.

    1. You know you can call Nintendo, they might be able to help you get whatever you had on that older 3DS back. If you haven’t already done this.

  15. Last time I bought a game from gamestop I got three good classic games for 12 dollars. It didn’t feel like a Scam to me. I will never understand the hatred towards Gamestop. Yea, sometimes they have shady practices. So what, there a business. Every business has shady practices. Gamestop is one of the only remaining dedicated video game stores left in the country. This is defiantly a case of “you don’t know what you got til it’s gone” syndrome.

You don’t want to transfer the data in store. I don’t even think you can. And even if you can it’s not a fast process. It could take hours to complete depending on how much information there is.

People can blame Gamestop all they want, but this is Nintendo’s fault. I will be buying my New 3ds and just keeping my old one. That way I will not have to transfer the data. I know thats not an option for everyone, but blaming gamestop is kind of silly.

    1. Gamestop is run by a bunch of greedy ass fuck-tards… Now… To your point, there ARE stores run by good people.. There is one an hour from where I live.. They have told me directly they don’t agree with corporate policy… You obviously know of another good store. Gamestop is a fucked up company, so consider yourself lucky that you have a store run by good people. :)

  16. While I figured this would happen at some point, I think ill just wait and buy it flat out and keep my oldie. It’s grown on me.

    1. UH DURPY DURP. Not every Gamestop has Wi-Fi, which you need to do a system transfer. Most the ones that do, it’s very slow and unreliable.

I REPEAT! THIS IS AN OPTIONAL METHOD.

    2. Yeah, one GameStop I happen to go to often said they wouldn’t let people do the transfer in store before the trade in was made. Its really silly, but I guess they want the business not all the people standing around doing that. Although im seriously thinking of going ahead and trying this confoosin mess. I want the new Beast!

      1. That is because the promotional details for this specific trade have stated since day one, that the old system has to be traded in towards the purchase or pre-order of the New 3DS. Meaning it would have to be traded in first.

They’ll still let you do a system transfer in store, if they have Wi-Fi. If not, you’ll have to take it home to do the transfer like this is saying, or call Nintendo about it.

    1. I would highly recommend copying your data to a MicroSD before going into the store, that way you can just put that into your current 3DS before even buying the New 3DS. Before you even choose a transfer option, it will ask are you already using a MicroSD in your old 3DS.

Then you won’t need to bring a lappy, you’ll still select the PC transfer option. You’ll just have to swap the MicroSD instead of having to copy the data from your SD to MicroSD in store after the fact. If you get what I’m saying.

I know how complicated all this crap sounds, but it’ll make it a bit easier that way.

  17. Don’t know if this is news worthy but Nintendo UK sent me free charger for buying the new 3ds.

All the fuss in the US over no chargers with the new 3ds makes me chuckle

    1. Yea funny, you guys have been taking it up the bum so long, you’re just okay with stupid things like this. God forbid anyone complain about a electronic device that needs to be charged, not coming with anything to charge it. Shame on them eh? No matter how cheap the chargers may be, it just isn’t practical at all.

Another inconvenience with Nintendo systems. I’m glad so many people accept these retarded business practices. /s

Nintendo could have easily included chargers. These chargers are so cheap online and whole sellers, which I’ve pointed out, sell them for $1. So you can’t tell me Nintendo is saving the consumer money by doing this. Especially if whole sellers are buying their chargers in bulk cheap enough, to sell for $1. I’m pretty sure Nintendo could have sacrificed a few cents to include chargers.

I could go into great detail, in so many ways, why them not including chargers with the 3DS is ridiculous. Even how contradicting it is with their reasoning for not including them.

Sigh and people wonder why Nintendo is always profiting off their systems so quickly… As if it’s some crowning achievement. The Wii U is the worst selling console out of them all, yet Nintendo is already making a profit off the Wii U. That tells you something very important many people completely ignore and it isn’t hard to figure it out… Sure for Nintendo it’s great, but it’s at the cost of the consumer. While other companies may not be profiting from their consoles, at least their willing to offer more in them.

I love Nintendo too, I love the Wii U. I’m just a realist though, and not a ass kisser. I don’t care who it is, if they make dumb decisions I’m going to call them out on it.

  18. Why would anyone want to burn gas driving from Point A to Point B only to drive back to Point A and head out again to Point B then return to Point A for the 3rd time?
Would you honestly be willing to waste 4 trips going to the same places twice JUST to transfer data?
    Doesn’t sound convenient at all.

    1. 1. The stores around you may not have Wi-Fi. You need a Wi-Fi connection to initiate the transfer process, to validate the systems first before it can start.

      2. If they’re going for midnight release, chances are you aren’t going to wait 3 hours outside Gamestop until 12:01, so you’ll be driving back home or somewhere else to kill time anyway. Apparently the New 3DS will be hard to get without a pre-order or in store pre-order, so they recommend you get there at 9pm. Also, most the stores I called said there is a big chance stores may not have extra to sell without a pre-order at release.

      3. They might not be able to transfer their data to MicroSD ahead of time, so in some cases it can take literally hours to transfer all your data over Wi-Fi and that’s on a fast connection. Gamestop’s that do have Wi-Fi generally have very slow speeds, so it could take even longer if you have to do a transfer over their Wi-Fi. Maybe some people don’t feel like waiting that long.

      4. Maybe they don’t have a SD card reader or computer to take into Gamestop, if they want to use the PC transfer option.

      5. Having to do system transfers is completely inconvenient period, it has been for several years. People can try to put the blame on these retailers all they want, but the only reason anyone has to put up with all this nonsense is because of Nintendo.

  19. Except after you do step 1 and 2 to take it back, they claim they “won’t accept returns” because the “box is already open” even though they sold it over the counter EXACTLY THE WAY IT WAS!

Don’t fall for that shit people. You might as well wait until someone sells it in a pawn shop somewhere for a bargain price and buy it there yourself.

    1. They aren’t going to do that, they’re obviously making an exception because of all this transfer bullshit.

Doesn’t matter anyway. I bet barely anyone was able to get one for midnight launch without a pre-order. I just came back from driving from Gamestop to Gamestop since they are supposed to start transactions at 9pm and hand them out at midnight. My entire city is completely sold out though, they did not get any outside of the pre-orders, on top of everything that was releasing today, they didn’t have extra to sell either. They didn’t have any copies of MH4 or MM to sell as well.

Nintendo and this stock shit is really pissing me off lately. I can’t even blame the strike, when I have no problem buying anything else except when it’s from Nintendo. So of course I go to both Walmart and Target, they’re getting them tomorrow but very little also. Yay.. Another fucking wild goose chase.

It’s so bad, most Gamestop stores didn’t even have midnight launch tonight, because they had nothing to sell. A lot of the stores weren’t even open and the ones that did stay open were going to close early. Some expected more stock but were shorted by Nintendo once again, so there wasn’t shit they could do but close for the night.

      Never seen this crap before.

I know you don’t really care since you don’t seem to want the New 3DS.. but I just had to vent. Totally ridiculous.

      1. No. This is bait of GameStop to screw upgrade adopters to remind stuck with two systems over the whole “you can’t return because it’s open even when it’s sold over the counter as so” bullshit.

And I’m not buying this new system as it insults US fans from getting the new standard model they wanted and now making it almost difficult to find chargers for the new XL. Right now I’m getting pissed to the point of jumping shit again and stick with PS3 for a while.

        1. Trust me, it isn’t some plan. Although that might be asking a lot.

Yes. Gamestop is by no means a lovely corporate company, I’m not trying to say that. It’s just that I’ve talked to many store managers and they are allowing it to be done this way because most stores either don’t have Wi-Fi or very slow Wi-Fi. They’d also rather not have a bunch of people in their store all trying to do a system transfer on one connection. They’d be working until tomorrow morning if it was only that way.

It’s just a total mess though because people have to do system transfers.

Again, it doesn’t matter when Nintendo didn’t ship enough. So even if it were some devilish plan of theirs, it wouldn’t work anyway because I’m not the only person complaining right now about there being none extra to buy. It isn’t only my city.
