EDGE Magazine Takes A Look At Yooka-Laylee

In the latest edition of EDGE magazine, there’s an extended feature article that explores the delights of the upcoming title Yooka-Laylee.

The article takes a look at Playtonic Games’ aim to create a modern twist on N64 style platform gaming, including details about the title such as rewards for players who wish to explore what the Yooka-Laylee map has to offer. There are ways to gain access to new areas hidden within levels, and the world can be transformed if the player is willing to put time into the game. There’s also minecart runs included, this is where collectibles can be gathered in”race circuits and along vast, undulating minecart tracks”. These collectibles include tokens that will allow the player to unlock eight different multi-player mini games which supports up to four players.

Playtonic Games’ aim is to suprise the player and create a title that avoids monotonous gameplay:

“We want to surprise the player all the time, so you never know what’s around the next corner, what your next challenge is going to be, who you’re going to meet. One of the best things about exploration and adventure-themed games is that element of surprise. The moment it starts feeling formulaic, you’ll think, ‘What’s the point of going into the next world if it’s just doing version 2.0 of what I did before?’ Each new [setting] should have new surprises, new delights.”

Yooka-Laylee hasn’t got a release date just yet, however the team at Playtonic Games are working towards the same release window that they planned last year which is October 2016. Playtonic’s latest update on their website explains that they will only release games once they have been perfected:

“One thing we’re not quite ready to reveal yet is the game’s final, day-and-date release plan, but we’re getting close. The Playtonic team is working towards the same release window penned last year, but as fans of some of our past work will attest, we’re a group committed to releasing games only when they’re polished, complete and at the quality level you expect. As soon as we’re confident we’ve ticked all of those boxes, we’ll inform our backers directly of when to mark their calendars.”

  1. I have a lot of faith in Playtonic. Nothing they’ve said or shown has been concerning to me. Hopefully the game turns out amazing. The Banjo Kazooie fan inside me is excited.

  2. I was going to get this game on Wii U but since I’ve given up on that console, I’ll get it for PS4 instead. Unless they announce an NX version is in the works. In which case, I’ll wait for that version down the road.

    1. I feel like a spiritual successor to banjo kazooie should be played on a Nintendo console. But there’s no real reason behind that except nostalgia.

      1. Nintendo version to relive the good ol’ days.
Xbox version to play a proper new Banjo-Kazooie game on a Microsoft console.
Playstation and Steam versions to bring these kind of games to those systems in a stable manner.
        Every system wins.

      2. I’d love to play it on a Nintendo console for old times’ sake. So I’m hoping they announce an NX version so I can do just that. If not, PS4 it is. :/

  3. Now watch people ship the new villain with Gruntilda online. It’s like they were made for each other.

    1. You really want the same team behind Nuts & Bolts to touch Banjo-Kazooie again?

Until a team of developers can take BK and return it to their glorious N64 roots, I am fine with their hiatus.

      1. I think Samuel is in denial about Banjo & Kazooie. Remember. This is the guy that thinks Bayonetta is the reason Banjo & Kazooie isn’t in Smash 4 as DLC. >.<
