Sun & Moon Players Didn’t Come Close To Catching 100 Million For Global Event

You might remember that Nintendo and the Pokémon Company had planned a global event which dished out a prize of 1,000 Festival Coins. The task saw players having to catch 100 million Pokémon in the latest game, Pokémon Sun & Moon. To contribute all you had to do was register your contributions by logging into the Game Sync function. In the end players only managed to get 16,423,231 Pokémon out of the 100,000,000.

  1. I don’t know what the expected. Did they expect every player to, instead of enjoying the game, or building a competetive team, ro spend every waking second capturing million pikipeks?

            1. Yep. If you go there, you can go online and tap the trade button. That will bring up the trade menu, and the options there are Link Trade (with a park visitor, basically a passerby), GTS, or Wonder Trade.

  2. It shouldn’t require that each player capture that many. The game sold nearly four million copies worldwide in its first couple weeks, and if all those people registered, that would only require each player to catch a mere 25 Pokemon, which is not something that would require spending “every waking second capturing a million pikipeks”.

So it’s probably more that people didn’t know this was going on and so didn’t register. I didn’t know this was going on until today.

(Incidentally, Wonder Trade and GTS are found in the Festival – tap “Trade” on the bottom screen)

  3. I’m guessing this is more of a fail of people to register rather than people not catching enough pokemon.

  4. Yeah, I bet no one registered. The online function is dumb. Why do you have to go into the online area and then hit the button to connect to the Internet? Not very well thought out system. Events should automatically register when you sign in and you should be prompted to connect to the Internet once during the story so you understand how it works

  5. I think they expect that number of catches collectively not one person doing it and even then it’s an unrealistic amount.

  6. I don’t know what Ninty was thinking. Even if every owner (~10mil) registered 10 catches they would only JUST reach the goal. You have to count on only a small portion participating.

Beyond that, how many copies are still in gift wrapping paper right now?

  7. “To contribute all you had to do was register your contributions by logging into the Game Sync function.”

Well, that explains it easily. I’d bet more than 9 out of 10 players had no knowledge or interest of Game Sync.

  8. I didn’t even know about this event. They probably could have advertised it better. For instance, did they do an announcement within the 3DS’s Notifications app?

    1. If I remember correctly, one of the trailers showing off new Pokemon revealed there is a post game area where you can battle characters from past games. These characters include gym leaders, Elite Four members, main characters like Red, Blue, Gold, etc.

  9. My brother didn’t know about it till after he already went on a pokedex spree and then put the game down while he waits for poke bank. There isn’t enough in Sm to hold players in after beating the pokemon league, xy had more. I captured like 40 Pokémon near the battle tree to grind xp and global mission and found it tedious
