Pokemon Sword & Shield rep says Wild Area is about the size of two regions from Zelda Breath of the Wild

The Metro was one publication which recently got the opportunity to go hands-on with the forthcoming Pokemon Sword & Shield for the Nintendo Switch platform. Speaking to a representative from The Pokemon Company at the event the site asked about how large the game’s Wild Area is. They were told that it is roughly the size of two regions from the prestigious The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The Wild Area is a fairly large open world location, which The Pokémon Company rep on hand estimated was about the size of two regions from Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. Here you do have control of the camera and can see pokémon roaming about on their own, as bees flit around flowers, fish pokémon jump in the lakes, and larger creatures such as Onix – which you’re warned not to get close to because they’re too high level – wander about freely.

    1. Definitely just two isolated regions, as the wild area is just one part of the game connecting towns and dungeons together from what I gather. Still pretty great to hear though, I was worried the area would be secluded to just the center of the map like in the concept art, but something that huge would likely sprawl around the entire game world.

  1. “which you’re warned not to get close to because they’re too high level” This makes me think of the Xenoblade series since they have tons of areas with monsters that so high leveled when you first enter the area that they’ll easily 1 shot you. It’ll be interesting to have a similar experience in Pokemon.

  2. Size of a map is a poor measure of quality. Game companies have been bragging at the sheer size of their empty, repetitive maps since GTA3 on the PS2. Talk to me about what’s in it. The Pokemon series has been lacking in several areas throughout its history. Size of the game world is not one of them.

  3. I’m excited for the Wild Area in SwSh, but I just have a feeling that the map is mostly going to focus quantity (size) over quality. I would prefer the game to have more memorable Wild Area locations than just a large amount of areas, but I just really doubt that will be the case.
