Nintendo president comments on Palworld

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was recently asked about the global hit Palworld and its similarities to the beloved Pokemon franchise. Mr. Furukawa took a similar line to The Pokemon Company by saying that the Kyoto-based company will take action against any who infringe on their intellectual properties. Palworld was dominating Twitch upon launch but has since seen lower viewer numbers, that being said, it’s still amassing quite a few views on the popular streaming platform.

Regarding Pocket Pair’s “Palworld”, which has been pointed out for its similarity to “Pokemon,” Furukawa said that in general, “We will take appropriate action against those that infringe on our intellectual property rights.

  1. Pretty neutral statement really. Every company takes appropriate action to protect their IPs. The statement doesn’t even imply that Nintendo thinks Palworld is infringing on this. I can’t wait for emotional comments here though one way or another.

    1. Nintendo or more importantly Game Freak did not take any action against Bandai for Digimon because their designs weren’t used on their game, this is the exact same, pokemon do not feature in Palworld, so there is no case, Palworld know it amd Nintendo/GameFreak know it.

      1. Aaah. So the “just as well” one to one copy-paste of PoKéMoN in “palworld” is NOT a thing?
        I’m glad you see this, I don’t though…

    1. “Since they haven’t taken any action, that must mean it hasn’t infringed on their IP rights.”

That is correct, at least for now, don’t know if they will do something about in the future but I doubt it.

  2. That sounds pretty passive aggressive to me ngl. We’re not gonna say anything positive, were not gonna straight up sue them either, but we WILL be keeping an eye on them.

    1. I can’t tell if you are stupid on purpose or doesn’t understand copyright in America is different in Japan. Japan doesn’t have fair use laws. So use your words wisely or you will be make fun of by everyone that thinks you are a dumb clown.

      1. Uh… you should really take some time for self-reflection before commenting like this. You are correct that Japan does not have Fair Use laws, their Copyright laws are also much more strict. Given those facts, Palworld had to pass a Copyright pre-check before it could be published (as Pocket-Pair is a Japanese company) and it passed… Additionally Nintendo has already proven itself an aggressively litigious company when it comes to protecting it’s IPs (going so far as to cease and desist a Palworld mod, less than a day after it’s showcase). If they haven’t sued already (especially when they had 3 years to start a suit) and they’re putting out neutral messages like this in spite of how much Palworld has already put them under fire in the public eye for Gamefreak’s lackluster development practices and under utilization of Pokemon’s potential, I don’t think a Nintendo will be taking Palworld to court anytime soon (barring any new, damning evidence of copyright infringement coming to light).

        1. “… and they’re putting out neutral messages like this in spite of how much Palworld has already put them under fire in the public eye for The Pokémon Company’s lackluster development practices and under utilization of Pokemon’s potential…”
Fixed, since TPC are controlling Game Freak’s every move and the puppet on the strings gets the blame.

  3. Very typical corporate speech. Valve said something similar when Epic Game Store Launcher used Steam user data to find friends(or something like that), and Valve immediately said they would pay close attention to this.

Not saying Nintendo isn’t going to press charges, but my guess is that they would need to find Pokémon assets in the game before they have something solid to sue for.

    1. ‘Press charges’??? Do you mean litigate? File suit? They are not in a position to press charges, this is a crime of a different manner..

  4. While the similarities are striking, I don’t think Nintendo/TPC can really go after this unless the devs start putting characters and whatnot that are actually trademarked by them; I don’t think they can hit them for just closely copying the gameplay and general character aesthetic, or they would have done that by now.

  5. Nexomon is “almost” identical gameplay as Pokemon but Nintendo/TPC don’t care, why is it only an issue now that Palworld has similar gameplay and characters. Alot of games from the same ganre have similar gameplay, it doesn’t mean they copied another game from within the same ganre.

  6. So Nintendo sues Palworld, and then GameFreak can continue to make shitty games, with even more bad character writing, broken performances, and broken teams (because DEXIT).

    1. No, if Nintendo sues Palworld, then The Pokémon Company can continue to make shitty games with all the things you described.

  7. Nothing is going to happen. If they were infringing upon anything, Nintendo would have sent cease and desist 3 years ago when it started development. Nintendo fucking shuts down non profit fan games the moment they gain any traction. This is just corporate generalized talk. Palworld has been in the clear for ages, and Nintendrones screaming for daddy Nintendo to sue them are beyond stupid.

    1. It’s a pretty silly perspective to take that any direct competitor to Pokémon needs to be taken down in court, when the continued success of Palworld will alternatively force Game Freak into a position of seeking improvement in their own development processes.

Isn’t that what people have been complaining about for years? A little market competition may be exactly what GF needs to up the ante on future projects

    2. “Nintendo fucking shuts down non profit fan games the moment they gain any traction.”
And whose fault is it that Nintendo has to follow strict copyright laws with no fair use policies? Tell me exactly whose fault it is.

  8. It kind of sounds like a threat to me. Like they are close to being actionable and if any of the pals finally cross the line they’ll take action.

  9. Pokémon ain’t really bad based on who Pokémon is made for, we have simply outgrown the game and we don’t want to let go, reason for why we enjoy Palworld soo much is because it’s like a mature version of Pokémon. I’m 30 and been playing since gen1, I have little family members around the age of 12-16 and they think the last few Pokémon games where the best.. reason being is, these are the people game freak made for game for.

I’ll says it again, we have simply outgrown something that was never made to age with us.
This has always been Nintendo marketing strategy and it ain’t never going to change because they make more money than Microsoft and Sony selling games to kids. So if you think Palworld is going to make them change their ways, you clearly don’t know Nintendo.

  10. It goes to show that Nintendo is bullying Palworld as much as they can at this point. Shouldn’t that mean that nintendo can’t do literal shit against Palworld?
