Sonic Team boss says AAA studios can learn a lot from indies

SEGA recently announced Sonic Pico Park which is a new independent take on the classic Sonic franchise and is being handled by Tecopark and inspired by their hit game, Pico Park. Speaking to Games Radar, Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka praised indies and said how difficult it is for AAA games with their big budgets to make the money back in a fiercely competitive industry, saying “It’s a huge investment of, you know, the staff and the resources that we have, and then once you’ve invested all that time and energy into something, you really need to sell a lot of units in order to survive in the industry.”

He said that independent developers can quickly execute an incredible idea and move on while larger publishers and developers such as SEGA have really lengthy development time meaning they need to make their cash back quickly once the project is wrapped up. He said SEGA could “learn from the indie development scene” and said it’s “really stimulating working with those indie developers, because you get to feel that that smaller team energy and that quickness of working to get an idea into an experience.”

  1. Wow, they finally realized it! This is a big screw you to that guy in the comment sections named f00k who hates indie games. I think it’s funny how sonic has always been with the indie scene, I mean sonic mania was made by a group of sonic fans and that turned out to be one of the best sonic games. So sonic team boss, thank you, and tell this to literally every other company.

  2. I’m glad they finally starting to realize it now. I have nothing against Indie games but I think these indie games is a good opportunity to help the franchise to restore it to its former glory.

    1. Why not? They stole plenty from real companies.

Mighty No.9: Indie knockoff Mega Man
Freedom Planet: Indie knockoff Sonic the Hedgehog
      Bloodstained: Indie knockoff Castlevania
      Yuke-Lalee: Indie knockoff Banjo-Kazooie
      Undertale: Indie knockoff Earthbound
      Pizza Tower: Indie knockoff Wario
Arzette: Indie knockoff The Legend of Zelda

If they keep this up, there will be enough indie knockoffs to make Indie knockoff Super Smash Bros.

      1. Those aren’t knock offs and are either inspired or parody’s. I mean yooka laylee is probally the most obvious, but like Undertale is only really inspired because of the lack of earthbound content at the time and the developer played the game as he grew up.

  3. He hasn’t learned at all and is just talking the dumb millennial talking points Aaron told him to spew. I mean he could learn from Spark or Rollin Rascals but doesn’t. Obviously Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2, Heroes, Battle, Riders, Shadow, Zero Gravity, Secret Rings, 2006, just get back to that! Iizuka is what’s wrong with Sonic alongside Ian Flynn and Aaron Webber. Also going to add this where do indie studios get the money? The evil zionist venture capitalists, the bigoted China, the Middle East? I swear millennials just lie and have no idea how the world works just want to manipulate and play victim.

  4. AAA is just industry jargon that has nothing to do with the spirit of game making and game design. I think these companies get lost in their own self-importance and don’t recognize themselves as game makers anymore
