The Nintendo 3DS Will Be Profitable From April

Nintendo has revealed that the Nintendo 3DS will finally be profitable for the company in the first half of its next fiscal year, which begins on April 1st. Nintendo is currently losing money on every Nintendo 3DS sold since the price cut, but Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has assured investors that this situation will change starting from the next fiscal year.

“I would like to begin with the product profitability of the Nintendo 3DS hardware, which has affected our profit the most for the current fiscal year.”

“Let me first inform you that, in the first half of the next fiscal term, we are now anticipating to get out of the situation that we sell the hardware below cost.”

  1. Wait, so does this mean they’re putting the price back up or have they managed to get the components required for assemble at cheaper prices?

    • It means that they will be making money on it from lower production costs. It would be really stupid to raise the price of it. If they can get it down that much this soon, perhaps another price drop towards the end of the year/early next year?

        • I agree. A price drop from $250 to $170 was VERY huge (an $80 price cut). I wouldn’t count on another price drop for it for a very long time.

    • Because they’ll probably start to manafacture more at a time, and so get it for cheaper (Basically like a discount for bullk buying), so the cost for a single 3DS will become lower than the price they sell them for.

  2. How much does it cost to make a 3ds? It costs about $150 to make an iPhone, but Apple sells it for $600+ depending on the model, so you can see that they are making quite alot of money.

    And one last thing… FIRST!

    • yes but your not factoring in the cost of production, shipping, and everything in btween. apple is still making a huge profit though

a little of topic: ipads wich are made in China might be Banned IN china XD

      • *off and… iphones are made by 70cents a day workers who really have no choice and probably will die before 60 because of bad living conditions and toxic fumes…….. probably the same with 3dses too…… off topic as well but yeah…. even if they were in china barely anyone would be able to afford one

        • i kinda want to agree with you, but not all of china lives in poverty. I still see this as a win, the less it sells, the faster these idiots ANALyst will stop calling the next big thing to destroy dedicated handhelds.

thanks for not going all grammer Ninja on my ass XD

        • Yeah, lots of companies including Nintendo and Apple use Foxconn, which is known for its poor working conditions and pay, to maker their products. But it’s not true that barely anyone would be able to afford one…

  3. actually nintendo isnt losing money cause of games like mario zelda and mario kart ect the 3ds system it self will infact come with the price of nintendo losing money but if they can make games thats selling 4 maybe 5 million copies well there doing more than making it up hell i thing they are making it up

    • What are you, Nintendo’s finacial dept and and bookkeeping? If Nintendo says their system isnt profitable yet, then maybe you should stop trying to make an opinion and listen to the facts.

  4. If Nintendo is losing $ on the 3DS while selling it for $170 and cost $101 to make; one can only imagine the losses Sony is having with the Vita when it cost $250 and $160 to make!!!

  5. I would find it unfair if nintendo cheaped out and gave lower quality parts to later buyers when us earlier buyers, even the ones who bought the 3ds for $170 in fiscal year of 2011, get a higher quality one

    • Just because they’re doing that, doesn’t mean that it will affect the quality of the games. Sony did the same with PS3 when they used cheaper parts for the PS3 slim model, & it certainly didn’t affect the quality of the games on graphics or whatever.

    • Sigh…consider that the system has to made, then shipped, then marketed, then the people that actually made it have to be compensated, so on and so on. Economics of scale, sir. Their is a lot more to gaming console economics than just making them.

      • dont forget that the first say 5 million units(made up no.) will also have an r and d cost factored into them. when the cost of the R and D and been met then thats more profit also.

        • Also licensing fees and software development (firmware updates, software testing).
There’s more to system cost than just Bill Of Material (BOM).
