Splatoon Global Testfire Gets An Extra Hour Due To Connection Issues

The Splatoon Global Testfire from 3-4pm PST earlier today has been extended an hour until 5pm PST, as there were lots of connection problems and no one seemed to be able to get into a game. So if you had no luck earlier, you’ve got a little bit left to go!

  1. I wonder why was up, whatever they should be able to stop it happening again when the game comes out so I guess this was a good thing. The servers are working perfectly now, no lag and everyone seems to be getting in first try.

  2. Credit where it’s due; wish they’d spoken about it earlier than they did, but they resolved the issue in under an hour and gave us extra time to make up the difference. Obviously not ideal as people will have planned for the time but still good.

And the game is incredible to play – with barely any of the content available even. When we get the full game with SO many more options – many more weapons, upgradeable gear, other game modes – and a buttload of free DLC to come throughout the summer…aggh I’m so hyped for this game.

      1. I didn’t get to either. First I couldn’t enter a match because of the Nintendo server not responding and then I got kicked to the title screen where I was then told there was no more room for players. As usual, Nintendo has shitt online. Really disappointed with the low quality graphics, just a bunch of bright colors with no detail or shading. This confirmed I won’t be buying :)

If they were, I doubt it would magically start working right after the first hour. They must have figured something out and fixed what ever was wrong for the next hour.

Plus, no “lizard” people claimed anything on Twitter, so it looks like there was no hacking.

Nintendo always has the problem. I see no other game company getting online problems of not enough space or a lot of error problems. Even their clubnintendo has problems when a lot of people are on.

      1. Kaptain Krusha K. Roolenstein

Service attacks are by hackers nothing to do with the online of both microsoft nor sonys part.
And Halo is a game where can easily be fixed if they did.

This is nintendo’s part because they still haven’t figured out how to have a install base of many users. They don’t understand, they dont even try to update. Until they update and try to fix it, we going to keep having their service crash because tooooo many people are online.

        1. If you go to any database user groups, this is the kind of problem that everyone deals with on some level; google, yahoo, microsoft, and every game app company have had to go through this or go through this when something is popular.

        2. I doubt they had much going into the demo’s servers. Most beta servers don’t run at max. Also the Halo collection still isn’t fixed many people still can’t get to run right, and they had to cancel a tournament over that

        1. I don’t think the number of people trying to log in the minute Diablo 3 servers went up can be compared to people trying to play the Splatoon demo, though.

          1. This was actually the exact same situation, and I’m glad that it happened now, and not in the launch, the minute servers go up.
Blizzard royally fucked it up on launch, the whole fucking game was unplayable for days, even the single player.

The first testfire was butter smooth, could play through all of them with no problems.
Maybe Nintendo underestimated how many people were willing to dedicate that 1 hour of the day to play the game.
The previous testfire, there most probably was not as many people connected at once, since it was spread to 3 hours, and the timings were not so optimal to any continent.

            1. Yea, I also believe the connection problems were due to underestimation of the amount of people wantinh to play. Maybe it was just some kind of test, to prepare for busy times in online multiplayer after the game launches; considering the testfire went up at the same time globally, it seems like a plausible explanation.

And about Diablo 3, yes, I kind of agree. I also bought the game at launch, and it actually took me an hour or two until I was able to log in after the servers went up at midnight; after logging out, I had to go through the same thing, unfortunately. On the one hand, I want to say that they probably were overwhelmed by the number of people wanting to log in, and the situation just exceeded their expectations. But on the other hand, they probably should have been prepared for every situation, including an overwhelmingly number of people trying to log in, plus, fixing the problem also took longer than it should have.
Either way, it definitely wasn’t the ideal situation, neither for Blizzard, nor the consumers.

The reason why I brought up the number of people trying to log in Diablo being much bigger than the ones trying to play the testfire was because someone said other developers, such as Blizzard, have to deal with server crashes due to too many people trying to get into the game as well, and I didn’t think it was a fair comparison, as the numbers in the two situations are most likely far apart from each other.

This is why Nintendo will be changing their internet structure with their next generation and with their new partnership with DeNA.

      1. Btw. the whole point of these testfires is to find the bottlenecks. After that, it’s easier to scale the whole thing when needed.

  4. The game don’t work at all online with my router so I’m not getting it, had the same problem with Smash but at least I can still play with friends online in Smash. Strangely enough I can get online with Mario Kart just fine. No problems with Pokémon either. Everybody who has boradband from the same company as I have the same problem and in order to fix it you must call and have them open the gate and then you need another router. Too much shit for me.

    1. pink0crystal0midbus

That doesn’t sound like Nintendo’s fault to me. Sounds like the fault of your internet provider.

Either way, it makes sense that you wouldn’t buy a game that is heavily reliant on internet connections in order to play the game’s content regardless of whose fault it is.

  5. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

So is the game getting customization added at a later date? Bullshit to add that as an update for later on, though. I can live without voice chat even though it’d be nice to have it but I refuse to invest in a multiplayer game with no customization. I don’t even bother with online for Smash 4 because of the forced Time 2 minute matches. It’s just not as fun as stock matches. And if the online for Splatoon is the mode getting the most attention, I have no interest in a game where online sucks because of short ass matches.

    1. The game is going to have EXTENSIVE customization. Go back and look at previous Direct footage, and the actual Splatoon Direct. The Testfire itself only had 4 groups of weapons to choose from, on Turf War only, to keep things quick and simple. The actual game will have a lot more.

    2. pink0crystal0midbus

No, the game DOES have customization right off the bat. I think the only thing that is not going to be in the game, at first, is ranked battles.

Nintendo is going to wait until most people are level 10, before battles are ranked. That is the only thing that is missing from the game itself. Then of course there will be DLC. Actually, in regards to the customization. The game is going to have a LOT of options with both weapons AND clothing. Plus, your clothing (hats, shoes, shirts) can level up and gain new abilities.

There are still weapons that we haven’t even seen yet in the game! :O

Oh, and there will be lots of DLC as well, I am sure to keep the content coming.

        1. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

Wait… Is it not obvious that’s the kind of customizing I’m talking about? If so, I should have clarified I meant match customization.

          1. I knew it… but TBH im not sure if there is customization in matches though… Iv’e been holding off on spoiling the game. If I had to guess though, I’d say there would be small amounts of match cutoms. :/

  6. I played it… after 100 minutes of trying.

Probably got in a good 20 minutes total.

Got stuck on da loading screen for a loooonngg time… restarted the Wii U… and it finally worked.

Honestly, they should have extended this by yet another hour!

    It’s fun… when it works.

    1. It worked fine for most people for the extended hour, I think you may be in the minority modest venture.

      1. pink0crystal0midbus

Yeah. I couldn’t get in the first hour at all. I was like, “Maybe I can sneak in a match after the hour is up” and it WORKED! I thought I would be booted off the server after the first match, but it let me keep playing and playing.

I thought maybe Nintendo forgot to turn them off and people who were playing previously figured it was over and logged off lol! Then I came on here to find out that the servers were open for extended time. :P

        Should have known.

Anyway, I’m glad I got to try out the game. It’s fantastic.

  7. When there is not a huge bug in the server like today for the first hour, this game runs great In HD at a constant 60fps with zero lag. Really great considering online is free, and even if it wasn’t it works great.

    1. Add that to the fact that these testfires give the most stress the servers will have excluding when they put up the server the day the game comes out, it’s even more impressive that it works perfectly for free. I say it’s the most stress since people who haven’t even thought about buying the game say “o cool, there’s a free demo” and so millions of people are all trying to connect to the server at the exact same time. Unlike when the game is out and people will be getting on, at different times.

  8. My second testfire run last time was a bit of a disappointment, since I never got to play another map other than that stupid rig one. Consequently, I’m not gonna bother this time anyway. I’ll just wait for the release.

  9. GUYS ITS CALLED A TESTFIRE, I REPEAT A Fire! Nitntendo tests if their servers are good and they’ll improve it! So no complaining!😑😤 Now go♋

  10. So that’s what happened! It was my first time trying to get into a testfire and I could not get in for the whole first hour.

After the hour was up, I tried again and I got in!!! I think I played 20 matches overall. Never had any connection issues after that. The game was AMAZING. So much different from other shooters I’ve played.

I have to say, the paint rollers are really powerful. The people that used them were always the top. I just used the normal splatter shot and I kept up pretty well, I think. I was afraid to log out and change weapons, because I didn’t want to lose my connection to the game. I can’t wait to get the full thing and customize my character and weapons and stuff. It might be the first game to knock me off my Smash Bros 4 playing habits.

    1. Rollers are powerful, yes, but they have a glaring weakness- you gotta be close to hit with them. You use the splattershot, here’s the best tactic against rollers: backpedal and fire. Worked for me all the time.

  11. I just got disconnected one time, aside from that I played a lottttt, I changed a lot of weapons to test, it was amazing! I’ll buy it definitely!

  12. Just to think, they are some lucky bastards who got two hours of Splatoon demo today. Meanwhile, the first hour was completely shut off for me except for 2 matches at the start of the hour.

    Damn.

    1. I had the same experience actually. 2 matches, then the servers kicked me out. After 30 minutes of searching, I finally just gave up.

Good to see they fixed it, because I was really worried that it might not work well by the launch date. Wish I would’ve known though so I could get more matches in. Oh well, it releases soon anyway.

  13. I stopped playing after the first hour mark cause I could only play 1 game. The fact that I didn’t check for time extensions makes me really hate myself since I only played the testfire the first time they introduced it and forgot about he other two times

  14. Seriously??? I started trying to connect the moment it was supposed to start … got 15 minutes of connection errors … played 2 rounds … then failed to join another match for all the remaining hour, which I spent the entirity of selecting “Join Match” over and over and over again.

And now, 6 hours later, NOW I learn that if I tried one more time after the first hour ended, I probably could have actually played for all of the second (which I had no idea happened)???

    @#//#/^&&&&*%=_€^^*****£=^&€*!!!!!!!

    1. … and YES. I know this was a test so that they can fix these kinds of issues before the game goes live, only a week from now. I just hope they can actually fix it. The first 3 test fires went much better.

I’ve already purchased and pre-loaded the game. I was just REALLY anxious to get a few more early rounds in … because even the Demo is really fun. I OWN (or technically, have “licenced” the right to play) the game. Now I just want to PLAY it.

  15. It really only worked the last 20… maybe 25 minutes for me.
Seriously, 90 minutes of error messages…. the testfire isn’t helping me buy the game Nintendo.

  16. Stupid Nintendo fags this game shit not gonna lie
Why play this stupid game if u can play COD or Battlefield
Guess what, you guys don’t have the games hahahahahahaha booohahahahahaha

  17. The Trolling is WEAK with that one …

Such games HAVE been on Nintendo platforms in the past, but they sold poorly, because when one turns on a Nintendo device, they do so looking for a Different kind of FUN.

If one is in the mood for a highly technical and realistic racing experience, then playing Mario Kart instead of Gran Turismo or Forza will fail to satisfy, because that’s not the experience you were looking for. Inversely, if craving the joyful zaniness of Mario Kart, all clones just feel like inferior imitations, and Forza just doesn’t scratch an itch for flinging green shells at your friends to steal the win at the finish line.

Likewise, if you are craving a super gritty and bloody war game, OF COURSE spraying ink on the floor isn’t going to satisfy as a substitute. It’s not meant to. Splatoon is a completely different kind of game for a different mood.

No one twisted my arm to keep playing after I joined the first Test Fire, and the second and third … and it certainly was not a Poor experience that drove me to sit by my tv for an hour just for a chance to play One more round, or pre-purchase the full game immediately after the first test fire ended.

… and at no time while playing did I ever think “I wish I was playing Battlefield instead of this”. Those games just don’t offer what this game does. There is nothing quite like it.

  18. Dang, if I knew it was extended, I might have been able to catch the last 15 minutes by the time I got home… Oh wellz, I can wait for the game to come out.

  19. Now I feel bad for giving up 5 minutes before the extension, I sat through 40 minutes of getting stuck in the “searching for a battle to join screen”

…At least I got a hell of a lot of practice on the Squid Jump minigame.
