Every now and then, Game Informer releases a list that may be interesting to Nintendo fans. For example, now that fans have had the time to digest what Metroid Dread has had to offer, Game Informer has decided to release an updated list of their top 13 Metroid games.
Game Informer’s list not only includes 2D Metroid games, but it also includes the 3D ones. Metroid Dread managed to make it to the #3 spot. However, the Metroid game that sits at #1 is none other than Super Metroid on the SNES. You can see the full list down below.
- Super Metroid
- Metroid Prime
- Metroid Dread
- Metroid Fusion
- Metroid: Zero Mission
- Metroid
- Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
- Metroid: Samus Returns
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
- Metroid: Other M
- Metroid II: Return of Samus
- Metroid Prime: Hunters
- Metroid Prime: Federation Force
I was expecting Castlevania entries to show up, not gonna lie.
You mean all the Metroid games, although I would’ve ditched federation force and replaced it with Metroid pinball.
The list order is pretty good though
Too much nostalgia. Metroid NES should be dead last. I replayed all the 2D Metroids after Dread and it was rough revisiting the original. Very slow. No crouching. Can only shoot forward and up.
I appreciate it’s legacy but, strictly as a game, it’s not more fun to play than any of the other games listed (I can’t speak for Other M though. Didn’t play it completely but I’m assuming it’s more fun to play than Metroid NES)
“Too much nostalgia. Metroid NES should be dead last. I replayed all the 2D Metroids after Dread and it was rough revisiting the original. Very slow. No crouching. Can only shoot forward and up.”
Obviously bad argument is obviously bad. First, as for nostalgia, I’d put NES metroid as the best in the series, and I played it near last, after I was in my 30’s and had already played all the most popular games in the series. The rest of your argument is restricted to arbitrary features which are neither good nor bad. Limiting the direction of your shots is not inherently bad, limitations are a part of game design. If Metroid Prime let the player fly while in morph ball mode, that wouldn’t necessarily make the game better.
” The rest of your argument is restricted to arbitrary features which are neither good nor bad. Limiting the direction of your shots is not inherently bad, limitations are a part of game design.”
I guess that explains while all subsequent sequels to NES Metroid kept the same features. Oh wait… they didn’t do that, did they? They refined the gameplay and added more freedom to the player controls. Do you have any links to old video game reviews of Metroid 2 and Super Metroid where the reviewers lamented the fact that they changed the way Samus controls for the worse?
If it makes you feel better, I never said NES Metroid was a bad game. It’s definitely one of the best games in the NES library. It just does stand up well to it’s successors for obvious and understandable reasons and to rate it as a better game is purely fueled by nostalgia and/or respect for it’s innovation when it launched.
Not sure why my reply didn’t post. Let me try again:
You’ve actually made a terrible argument by saying, “The rest of your argument is restricted to arbitrary features which are neither good nor bad. Limiting the direction of your shots is not inherently bad, limitations are a part of game design.” It’s ridiculous because none of the subsequent Metroid sequels kept those features as is. They IMPROVED and REFINED the game play and I’d bet money there wasn’t any reviewers of Metroid 2 or Super Metroid that complained about the new ways the player controlled Samus.
And if you’re feelings were hurt because you thought I was trashing on the game… I wasn’t. It’s one of the better games in the NES library. It just falls short of it’s successors for obvious and understandable reasons and to suggest that it’s a better game is due to being influenced by nostalgia or respect for it’s innovations for it’s day.
I’ve played all of the games on the list except for Federation Force (and Prime Pinball but that isn’t even on the list, so, ehh), and I would def make my list differently.
(Unplayed) Metroid Prime Federation Force
Metroid: Other M
Metroid II: Return of Samus
Metroid
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Metroid Prime Hunters
Metroid: Zero Mission
Metroid: Samus Returns
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Metroid Dread
Super Metroid
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Prime
Just keep in mind, the only games on this list that I would actually call “bad” are Other M and Federation Force (which, honestly, I’m a little more open to trying now that Samus Returns and Dread are out, and Prime 4 is, presumably, still on its way). The OG Metroid and Metroid II are still good games- they just really haven’t aged well, but still have some of that old-school charm that makes them worth looking back to on occasion.
I love Metroid Prime Pinball a lot and want it on the Switch with more tables. Make it Metroid Pinball and add a lot more tables!
I only see 12 Metroid games. I have no clue what this last one is. fake struggles to read it Metrode Prim: Fedass Forceshit. Sounds truly horrible.
